An unintentional Parks & Recreation comedy showdown… Aziz Ansari Buried Alive March 27 / The Count Basie Theatre Nick Offerman American Ham March 28 / Monmouth University s Pollok Theatre By: Al Muzer RED BANK / LONG BRANCH, NJ A quirk of venue-booking fate inadvertently pitted Parks & Recreation co-stars Aziz Ansari (who plays Tom Haverford) against Nick Offerman (Ron Swanson) on two successive nights in Monmouth County. Playing a taciturn, crisis-avoiding, sax-playing, woodworking enthusiast with a 4-pound mustache as the Director of the Parks and Recreation Department of Pawnee, Indiana -- Offerman has dubbed his theater tour American Ham due, in part, to Ron Swanson s oft mentioned love of red meat on the show, and because Offerman, a trained stage actor with a long list of credits, still can t seem to get around the fact that he s a break-out character (Swanson has a large online fan base) on a hit television series. Wandering on stage in well-worn jeans waving casually with one hand while carrying an acoustic guitar and his shirt in the other, a topless Offerman placed his guitar carefully on its stand and struck a few beefcake poses for the crowd before ambling over to the microphone and deadpanning Well, all the advertisements for this show promised ‘partial nudity … and I didn t wanna let anybody down. Low key, very much in character (or, is the character him?), cynical, blunt and unassuming, Offerman promised that now that the nudity thing is out of the way an evening of sing-alongs, sea chanties, woodworking hints, timely references to meat, and [his] ‘Ten Tips for a Prosperous Life will follow. The guitar proved more than a prop as Offerman interspersed well-played, lyrically-tweaked, potty-humor ditties such as King of the Road, The Apple Pancakes Song, Keep A Handkerchief in Your Pocket and a Johnny Cashed I Stay Offline between droll insights on celebrity culture, L. Ron Hubbard, Carrie Underwood s Jesus Take The Wheel , gay marriage, straight marriage, The Hobbit, intoxicants, religion, manners and, of course, Red Meat --- all of which, in their eventual unfolding, served as solid evidence validating his Ten Tips... Aziz Ansari s performance the night before at Red Bank s Count Basie Theatre was a much more strident affair as the delivery, pace and presentation of the material was machine-gunned at the packed house in a voice (sorry to say) that grew annoyingly shrill and irksomely repetitious around the one hour mark. No topic was off limits as Ansari riffed on bad Chinese food, child molestation, rape, marriage, growing up an Indian in South Carolina, adulthood, religion, children, and the joys of NOT having children. Unplanned set highlights were a 5-minute haranguing of a patron texting something in the front row as Ansari first took to the stage -- causing him to wonder what was so important it had to be sent right then and there; and the moment Ansari asked the crowd to get the picture taking thing out of the way now which resulted in a brief, but incredibly intense, cell phone flash show. Nick Offerman's ‘Ten Tips for a Prosperous Life Engage in Romantic Love - Say Please and Thank You Carry a Handkerchief - Eat Red Meat Get a Hobby - Go Outside - Avoid Mirrors Maintain a Relationship with Jesus Christ (if it ll get you sex) Use Intoxicants - Paddle Your Own Canoe ###

We didn't know what to expect going in and we came out very pleased. We frequent a lot of comedy shows and have seen many great comics. Carlin is the only is other show that I can compare this one too. He went a solid two hours and had me entertained the whole time. If you get the opportunity to see him do yourself a favor and watch him.

Absolutely hysterical show! Nick's humor is fantastic, loved every minute of it. Was disappointed, though, that Megan Mullally and Stephanie Hunt did not perform, as was advertised on the poster outside the theatre (see attached).

NIck Offerman was GREAT! The show was a blast the whole time. I was a little worried that he would try to be mostly like Ron Swanson, but he was so much more honest. It was a fantastic show and I was crying tears from laughter throughout.

In many ways, Nick Offerman is very similar to Ron Swanson, his famous character on Parks & Recreation. His material related to such things as food, craftwork, and his unique, eloquent delivery was hysterical (make sure you put your phones away). However, much of the event was spent insulting Christianity and making wildly crass jokes about God while saying that those who subscribe to various religions should be decent to each other. Well, apparently that applies to all BUT Christianity. Ultimately, it was disappointing. There was so much inoffensive material that he could've run with, but that all got pushed aside in the name of insulting everything in which a good number of people believe. I'll stick to watching Parks & Recreation for my future Nick Offerman entertainment.

Nick Offerman, although he did not come from a stand-up comedy background, puts on a hilarious and extremely entertaining show. He goes through his 10 tips for prosperity, telling stories and singing songs. I would pay to see this show again many more times. If he puts out a record or special from this, I will be first in line to buy it. Absolutely phenomenal.

Not as funny as I would have hoped and weirdly preachy. I didn't even disagree with him, but preachiness in any form usually turns me off.

I absolutely love Park and Rec, especially Nick's character on the show, so I obviously jumped at the chance to see him live. It started out hilarious, delving into 10 tips to guide you through life. As the set progressed, however, Nick became extremely dirty and irreverant. I'm all for a dirty joke here and there, but he took it above and beyond, and not it a good way. It became tactles, raunchy and disrespectful, pretty much spitting on the Bible, religion and republicans (none of which I have a strong affiliation with). That didn't bother me as much as the raunchiness did though. It was just unnecessary. I feel like comedians feel obligated nowadays to tell dirty jokes and I just fee like there are so many other ways to get a good laugh out of the audience. I think it shows a lack of depth and creativity. I'm not sure if he was trying to cater to the college audience, but he definitely underestimated our level of maturity and what we would actually find humorous. Ultimately, the show left me with a bad taste in my mouth, and a strong sense of disappointment.

The show was hilarious! Jokes about religion get a little intense, not an issue for me but could offend deeply religious people. Otherwise I thought the dialogue was smart, funny and very very good.

Tasteless and offensive. I expected more from a comedian with such a great character on television. It seems like someone used Christianity to do him wrong at one point in his life and now he has to put down anyone who has faith.

You could definitely tell he was new to stand-up, but it was refreshing to see him out of his character on Parks and Rec. There were also some tidbits or "tips" more from the mouth of Ron Swanson that helped tie the show together. I also enjoyed the musical interludes, his wife's band was fabulous and set a mellow and bluegrass/country vibe. A great show!

I really was a little apprehensive going to his show because I know he's funny on parks and rec, but that doesn't mean he can be funny live. I even showed up two hours late to my friend's birthday party for Offerman's show and I'm so happy I didn't pass on the show. He was really funny and there was brief nudity and a surprise guest. I really liked that it was more like a lesson/story and easy to follow. We also got to learn of his and his wife's musical abilities. They were really cute and he, of course, did not hold back on his crude humor just because his wife and family was present. I would recommend it and I would go see it again if I could. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 out of 5 is just because I wish they had other comedians doing the opening act instead of all the singing.

Nick Offerman is a genius. I couldn't stop laughing. Not only is he a actor but the man can play guitar and make you laugh with his songs. I recommend anybody seeing him perform even if you haven heard of him( which you probably been living under a rock) You will for sure become a fan. Also parks and recreation is amazing just saying.

As a big fan of Parks and Rec (especially Ron Swanson) I was so excited to see Nick Offerman LIVE. I've been listening to his autobiography and just love hearing him talk and share stories. I have been attending countless events for years and this is seriously the worst one ever. I do admit that I'm naive and didn't realize what "Full Bush" meant until afterwards (I thought it meant his beard since that is what is pictured), but I was extremely disgusted and disappointed with the content that continued to get more and more vulgar as the show continued. It is the first event I've ever walked out of because I was so offended at the extent of vulgar content and lack of creativity. I felt like I was on the edge of a cliff. I wanted to stay longer and see if it got better, but I continued to get pushed off. When he started making fun of the Holy Family by talking about flasks to represent each one and shoving it up his rear, my heart broke and I walked out. That was only 20 minutes of the show. Nick Offerman, you are so funny and creative. I am sad that I can no longer support you as a comedian, but will continue to laugh at Ron Swanson as a character. This show may lose more fans than gain them. I lost a lot of money and will have a hard time giving Nick another try.

I thought this was a pretty awful comedy show, not like any stand-up routine I would pay money to see. I posted my actual review, but when notified it was up I then went to the site to see what other people thought. There are a number of people who thought the show was good (not sure how some thought it was great), but there were also a large # of 4 and 5 star reviews that totally pan the show when you read them. How can someone say the show was poor and that they and everyone who saw it with them were disappointed -- and then the review is shown as a 4 or 5 star review? Not sure what happened here, but note that the star ratings don't seem to match up well with the actual commentary

My wife and I attended the Full Bush show, and I still am perplexed as to what the "entertainment" was supposed to be? If you want to hear how Nick married way over his head, how great his wife is, and details of their sex life, then you might really enjoy this show. Oh, did I mention how great he thinks his wife is? He does think she's really great. But if you aren't interested in that topic, there just wasn't much effort to make this a stand-up comedy routine of any sort I have experienced. It was a very long show strangely lacking in humor. I came away thinking: awful comedy show, but he seems like a guy that would be interesting to hang with at a party or bar -- but not if I have to pay him nearly $200 to do so.

Nick Offerman was hilarious and came off as down to earth and likeable. His show was well worth the ticket price. We went to the early show and had good seats - 5th row. The Masonic is my favorite venue in the city. There is not a bad seat in the house. I have been in the last row of the balcony once. The sound is the best in the city. Staff is very on top of things. Until the next time...

First off, The Fillmore is a beautiful venue. If you haven't been there I highly recommend it. Second, I went into this show with an open mind because I'd only ever seen Nick Offerman perform as an actor. Needless to say he's a man of many talents. The show was great, he was hilarious, and his content was relevant. I don't recommend young children being present as there is some vulgar/suggestive content, but it wasn't overly used which is something I tend to dislike about comedy shows. If you get the chance, go see Nick Offerman!

I love Nick Offerman and he was fun to see but the show was short and it was weird... started with a bit about having to tone his show down because of the university we were at; we weren't at one. And then he basically lectured for another hour... I expected more stand up and less preach. The content was still funny and i enjoyed the show but i wouldn't recommend anyone to spend money on it. Plus there were a bunch of people in the audience that wouldn't stop taking and yelling and kept getting up to leave. IT WAS AN HOUR. Sit down.

The show started on time and ran for about 1 hour and 15 minutes. He was witty but the songs didn't always flow and it isn't laugh out loud funny. It was just long enough though, cause I'm old and wanted to get to bed. The Filmore Theatre is a great venue. It's beautiful and ornate. But don't sit in the upper balcony. If you do, you will be annoyed all night long by ushers constantly walking in front of you, roaming the aisle and chatting with each other.

Nick Offerman did a FANTASTIC show! He kept us laughing the whole time (which was about 2 hours long)! Now it should be known by now if you know enough about Nick that his shows are dirty. That's one of the factors that goes into his comedy show! So I would not recommend his show to someone who is conservative or wants something family oriented. But if you want to laugh your butt off, hear some funny songs, and listen to some dirty comedy than go see Mr. Offerman! This was the first comedy show I have ever been to and it was worth every penny and moment of my time! It was even worth the 20 minute walk to the parking garage (since we didn't notice the big parking lot outside the building...haha! Nick did wonderful. He brought the raunchy, or the never PG-13 version of himself. Too many people think of him as the God Fearin Ron Swanson character. Once he went on about the fictitious stories and magic from thousands of years ago about a man named pronounced Jess-sus .... the theatre started clearing out. He brought tons of positivity to the show as well, but those people never stuck around to get to know what he s really about. Well done Nick! Fantastic!

There were a couple of semi funny parts to the performance. However, I found myself bored most of the time. I love stand-up comedy acts, and Nick Offerman is clearly not a standup comic, although he gave it his best effort. I learned three things from the show: he loves his wife, he is anti-religion, he is anti-Trump. Bore-snore.

I should have done more research before buying the tickets. This really wasn't a comedy show, more of a monologue with a few, too few, funny pieces thrown in. He did not realize where he was or who his audience was, kept referring to being on campus and us being students. He wasn't and we weren't. Spent way too much time bashing organized religion and its followers. It will be hard to watch parks and rec now.

So we watch Parks and Rec a lot and love Ron Swanson. Nick Offer an is the exact opposite in every way. He is not a comedian but more of a story teller. He tells of how Christianity is a myth and republicans are idiots. Many people walked out of this show last Thursday. I should have but continually gave him more chances. Don't expect a comedian. My boyfriend and I made the trip from Hartford because we could not pass up the chance to see Nick Offerman live this time around. His show far exceeded all expectations, making the trip for two long time fans well worthwhile. This was our first time seeing anything at The Wilbur. Overall, I loved Nick Offerman. The show kept my attention the whole time, and I was laughing consistently. He knows how to work a crowd, and also keep them in line. The only issue I had is that the show "started" at 9:30. We got in line at 9 and it was wrapped around the block. Once we got in finally around 9:50, we quickly used the restroom and grabbed a drink and made it to our seats about 1 min after he started. It was pretty ridiculous they didn't wait for everyone to get to their seats before starting, especially since it was their fault everyone was let in so late. I would go to Nick Offerman again, but probably not at this venue.

Due to the filming for a televised special the show opened 20 minutes late. Offerman spent ten minutes at the start talking about how the university brass at the venue wanted him to go PG 13 when the show was not at a facility associated with a university. The following fifteen to twenty minutes were consumed with providing evidence that the show was not PG 13. The raunch was average. Offerman's comedy sense shined for the remainder of the program as he lampooned the current state of society. His jokes and songs were pithy and clever poking fun at multiple generational stereotypes. He self-defacing ode to distance himself from his famous character was spot on. Overall an enjoyable second half that offset the late, awkward start.

I love Nick Offerman but had never seen his stand up I was unsure what to expect. It was hysterical!! I highly recommend.

I read a professional reviewer s commentary and couldn t agree more. He is a really nice, interesting guy, but he s not a comic. This show is not really entertaining, unless you are a super fan of Parks and Rec, and are just THAT interested in seeing the guy who plays Ron Swanson. A decent number of people left early at the Chicago event.

Very disappointed in this performance. I thought we were going to a standup comedy routine and what we got was a boring rehash of progressive left wing politics. I could even forgive that if it was funny. And it was not. I was definitely bored and asking myself why did I pay to see this. Save your money if you want to see stand up comedy. This is not it. You're better off watching MSNBC. And you'll save a ton of money!

Nick is unforgettably entertaining! He really put on a good show and was on stage for the full two hours. I would absolutely recommend going to see Nick Offerman if you are even thinking about it! Best money I've spent in a long time!

Not very funny, offended folks in the audience. People walked out quietly. TMI regarding his marriage/ sex life. Where was Ron Swanson? I know , he s not Ron Swanson . Sacrilegious point of view did not sit well with conservative point of view. I won t get those two hours back.

I got a few chuckles, but they weren't worth the ticket price. I didn't pay to hear his political opinions. He even said in the beginning that he wasn't going to bring that into performance that night. He lied. I wanted Ron Swanson but I got Nick Offerman. The best part was a guy screaming that Nick was part of the Illuminati because he mentioned the freemasons.

Great performance, only thing that could have been better was a different location, seats were too tight for average adults, sore knees.

Nick makes sure you know he is not Ron Swanson, which most people understand and appreciate. On the other hand if you didn t watch parks and rec you won t understand about half his show or won t be as funny. I thought he was a GREAT performer! Definitely one of the best comedic performances I ve been to. He gave a 2 hour performance with songs that were hilarious!

I read a ton of negative reviews, but was optimistic because I think Nick is so great. I was not disappointed. He spoke, told stories, sang and made me think and laugh for almost two straight hours. If you re a true fan, and you align or at least understand his viewpoints, you ll be happy!

Not very funny, a lot of songs that were just OK but not that funny, some good life advice, but didn't really find a funny way to deliver it. He uses some occasional crude language, but it seems like he just did that to buy some laughs. Overall, his show jumped a lot on topics but he felt like it all tied together in this "Full Bush" idea, or at least tried to pretend like they all tied together in that theme but that felt forced. Just talk about what you want to talk about, don't pretend it all ties together. It was OK and somewhat entertaining, but I wouldn't go again to take a friend or really recommend. It probably would be better if he promoted it as a lecture or life advice type of show, leave out the crude language for more witty or creative ways to talk about the subjects he wants to cover. Just saying the F-word doesn't make something funny. It can when used right, and he did in one particular line about people who brought their kids with them (none did, but the joke was funny), but otherwise not funny.

Nick Offerman came on stage, without an opening act, and talked for almost two solid hours. He had various bits, stories, jokes, he even replied to the audience when people blurted out random thoughts. I've seen a lot of stand-up and most, even the old HBO specials, run around an hour. Overall, the routine is great. It's hilarious across the board. I love the way he talks about himself and his wife. He's a no-nonsense guy and it's just a ton of fun.

My boyfriend s been a fan of Parks and Rec ever since it was on tv. He rewatches the whole series at least once a year. He loves Nick Offerman so for his birthday I bought him tickets to Full Bush. I expected it to be humorous but I m not a big comedy fan so I didn t think I d enjoy it too much. It was awesome! Nick had a perfect mix of hilarious songs, anecdotes and typical stand up jokes. I would definitely recommend going to see the Full Bush your if you have the chance.

I love this guy, and I loved his show. Nick Offerman is a maker. He is a maker of mirth, a maker of furniture, and a maker of laughter. I enjoyed his "Full Bush" immensely!

Usually I find Nick Offerman hilarious, clever, and innovative, but this fell flat. It's like he gave up and drunkenly wrote some shitty songs and called it a day. Definitely don't recommend

I think this event was way overpriced for what you got. Nick was funny and enjoyable. But the book signing wait was ridiculous. We paid the same amount as people in the front row (I know because I had friends down there), but chose the balcony to be on more of a slant to see better, and it was gonna be a 2 hour wait to meet him. My party didn't stay because the theater was ridiculously hot and it wasn't worth waiting to meet him for two seconds. Don't waste your money, unless you actually want to wait or ask him a question during the Q & A session.

I do not remember seeing that this was a book signing at the purchase of my tickets. I was under the impression this was a stand up comedy routine. Instead we were given a free book, Nick talked about his book and took question. Book signing afterward. I won't purchase tickets through this vendor again.

Nick Offerman's lecture was great. Humorous, and personable with the audience. He spoke maybe an hour, hour and a half. $50. The wait time to meet him was unacceptable. They called sections to line up. Unfortunately, my section was last, which meant a wait time of almost 3 hours. People had literally fallen asleep in their seats. I wish the employees had apologized for the inconvenience - maybe even offered us something to drink!

I absolutely love Nick Offerman and I had a great time, but it wasn't as advertised. It was sold as an evening with Nick Offerman, which seemed like it would be a comedy show. It ended up being a book tour where he talked/read from his woodworking book for a half an hour and then took questions for another half an hour. Each ticket holder did receive a copy of his book, which was nice. You then had the option of waiting for his to sign your book, we did this, which was a little over 2.5 hours of waiting. I feel bad for the people sitting further back as their sections were called after us. I only wish I had known what I was buying. I might not have gone, or at least would have been more prepared for the evening. It was very cool to meet him though, even if it as just for a moment.

It was fun and interesting, but not really anything to do with woodworking. Nick read a couple passages from him new book, fielded a lot of questions from the audience, and then started signing books. That part took hours.

I thought this was going to be a regular comedy show with Nick, who I love. Instead, it was a very short book signing for his latest book which is about woodworking. My fault perhaps for not researching it more, but it was titled "A Night With Nick Offerman". Somewhat misleading. We still had a good time and love him.

Too much talent on stage to deliver this level of comedy. Noticed couples around us looking at each other uncomfortably. Did not walk out, waited for the show to get better. It never did. Similar conversations while walking out after this performance.

Can't say I've never walked out of a show, but this is certainly the most expensive show I've walked out of. I sat through an hour of this pile of garbage hoping at some point there would be a bit we would find funny. We did not. A musical show by two people with no musical talent. An attempt at edgy, raunchy humor by people who just don't get it. We were hoping for a show like book of mormon or louis c.k., not even on the same planet. Don't waste your time.
