Andrew Bird

ANDREW BIRD IN CONCERT:Chamber pop luminary Andrew Bird is an unparalleled performer, keeping the craft of musicianship alive in an era of increasing audio automation with his virtuosic live performances. Bird becomes a veritable one-man orchestra at his live shows through the use of a loop pedal, layering his signature violin with whistling, xylophone, and heart-rending vocals to create a delicate, infinitely detailed world of emotional peaks and valleys. Fans of musical craftsmanship will worship Bird on his latest tour, where he'll continue to innovate with unique renditions of fan favorites like "Tenuousness" and "Oh No".BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:Chicago-born Andrew Bird began his musical training at age four, studying the Suzuki method during his youth and receiving a degree in violin performance from Northwestern University in 1996.

It was the best concert I've ever been to. Andrew Bird and his band are talented, great harmony, wonderful lyrics. The use of technology and range of instruments are a delight to watch. It's like a symphony. A.B. is a composer and creates beauty through his song. I was in awe. One for the bucket list. Bergen PAC venue is spectacular too and very wheelchair and walker friendly. Staff is attentive and joyful. Clean. Easily accessible bathrooms. Small hall, so every seat is a good seat. Free, easy parking nearby.

I have been to see Andrew Bird probably 8 times prior, he's one of my favorites. If you haven't seen him live, I'd really recommend it. He has a funny/ quirky stage personality, he talks about inspirations for his songs, and he does a bit of improv on songs, so it's not the same experience from performance to performance. (I personally hate when artists don't evolve their music -- I may as well have stayed home and listened to the cd, right?) And he's generally good about bringing back old tunes. The audiences tend to very very tame and polite listeners. It almost feels more like a recital or jazz show -- super mellow. The Teragram is a nice space, great bar, but it was a bit hot with so many people jammed in there. And I just can't do standing concerts for hours any more. (I have an old injury that gets very aggravated.) Plus, as a female, I can't see over the super tall guys who always manage to stand in front of me! This concert was good, but not my favorite of Andrew Bird's. It felt like a practice run-through of the new album. There were a lot of mistakes as well (several times when they had to start over, wrong chords, etc.). However, I know the album is extremely new, and they're still working things out as a band. I definitely understand -- it's tough when the material is so green. I hadn't heard Rodrigo Amarante (sp?) live, and he was so sweet. Very kind stage personality and a great sense of humor. We really enjoyed him. Nice that there was only one opening band. Kept the concert at a good length.

I've enjoyed Andrew for quite some time and couldn't pass up the chance to see him at the Teragram -one of my new favorite venues. He's such a musicologist that you never know what he will do next, but you know you will thoroughly enjoy an evening with him. At this event, he and his group performed his new album in its entirety. Wow. At the end of the show, he got a little flustered with a few things not working out to his level of satisfaction. Well, that's Bird. I'll see him next at the Showbox in Seattle. Don't pass up a chance to attend one of his concerts.

This was one of the most inspiring concerts I've ever been to. . . and I've seen a lot! While the acoustic environment of a cathedral left some of the sounds a bit muddied in the naturally echoing space, and the sight lines weren't the best, the general ambiance of the high ceilings, stained glass windows, and dramatic light and shadow paired with the gorgeous music more than made up for it. It was also wonderful to hear things that we don't get from album recordings. Watching one man become a full orchestra of right before our eyes was remarkable. It was truly a unique experience that I would gladly relive over and over again.

Gezellegheid was anything but a disappointment. Although far subdued from his usual concerts, he still moved the audience with beautiful and stunning works that echoed through the church. Mostly instrumental along with his other songs that he played solo, although you'd never be able to tell it was just him by the swelling sound of his looped whistling and plucking to the point where 10+ parts came together to form a beautiful climax. There is really no review that could do him justice.

This was my first time seeing Andrew Bird perform live, I went with a friend that had seen him previously at a larger venue, which she said was a good, but a much different experience. The small cathedral was a great setting for the show, the sound was incredible. Andrew Bird is a phenomenal musician and watching him jam for close to 2 hours was my personal musical event highlight for 2009. I'll be seeing him again. If you haven't seen him before I would highly recommend going to a show.

It got a little redundant, frankly. I like Andrew Bird but there's only so much looping I can handle. The sound was great but the sight lines were pretty rough, flat church, a lot of heads bobbing side to side to see.

Andrew Bird is even better live. He has a very intimate way of interacting and playing for the audience, you feel like you're just hanging out in his studio, and the fact that the concert was in a small cathedral only accentuated this. My parents came with to the concert and, even though neither of them were necessarily Andrew Bird fans or had listened to his music much, they were both floored by how good he was. So whether you're an Andrew Bird fan or not, if you like classical music, folk music, indie music, or just highly original music, Andrew Bird is the man to see.

This show was unlike anything I've been to. Andrew opened the show by saying "I'm going to resist the urge to entertain...and just play" It was a rare treat to see such a talent just do for all of us what he probably does at home with his friends. The church setting was lovely; the acoustics were awesome and the whole experience had a mellow yet sublime feel.

The music was to die for however even though the cathedral was a pleasurable setting it was not only difficult to see him it was virtually impossible to understand what he was saying because of the reverberation.

I had pretty high expectations for this show because I had heard what an amazing performer Andrew Bird is. And Andrew Bird totally delievered. I was blown away by his whistling. It is like an instrument in itself. And the way that he records and loops sounds and instruments and plays them back as background is truly incredible. Andrew Bird is so talented, and that fact is so much more evident when you watch and listen to him live. Not only does he have an amazing voice, but he can play practically every instrument. The show winded down with St. Vincent coming back out and performing with Andrew Bird. They really jam well together and overall it was an unforgetable experience. Definitely one of the best shows I have ever been to.

Andrew Bird has given us music to live for. His performance stands out as one of the best shows yet to be seen and heard by us. He exudes such talent on stage. Andrew Bird is an incredible artist so I expected a lot from him live and he did not disappoint! I love how original he is and the way he changes around the songs. He's so real and is musical talents are breathtaking. There were tears in my eyes when he whistled. It was amazing. The duets with St. Vincent were gorgeous. Andrew Bird is an amazing performer! His show was very passionate, and speckled with interesting and quirky dialoge. His set ran smoothly, with a great balance of upbeat, louder songs and quieter more thoughtful/acoustic ones. Bird is so unique because of his wonderful whistling abilities, and the way he recorded his whistling and/or violin, and then looped it and played over that was mesmerizing. I enjoyed the way he included the opening act, St. Vincent, by bringing them onstage to play all together. Do most bands do that? The duet with the lead was beautiful, too. My boyfriend and I REALLY enjoyed the show. Only problem for us was the time of night- at 8 PM on a Sunday (instead of a Saturday). After the show, we didn't get back up to Scranton, PA, until 1:30 AM. We were tired driving and it was tough to get up for work Monday!

I've seen Andrew Bird in concert about four times this year. He is never a disappointment. His show at the Electric Factory on October 25th was as wonderful as expected. He played a nice mix of old and new songs. The opening act St. Vincent was also good. They played a few songs with Andrew Bird and his band and those worked very well. A nice treat was a duet between Bird and the lead singer for St. Vincent of her song Marry Me where Bird played violin. Bird also performed a new song that was stellar. Anonanimal was also wonderful. On the tour one of the bandmates had been playing the saxophone to accompany Bird. Early on, the saxophone seemed to drown out Bird's voice. But, at this show it blended perfectly. My favorite part was an instrumental interlude where Andrew Bird got all salsa-licious. One of the roadies came out and danced like mad while playing the tambourine. While the music was hot, I admit that the unexpected dance routine sealed the deal for me. Those narrow hips were hipnotic! He even had this seventies porn star mustache.

Andrew Bird is one of the greatest live performers if only for the fact that he basically constructs each song he plays on stage as he goes. With the looping, different instruments, whistling and singing, he makes an original version of each of his songs. This is the second time I've seen him in concert and I've been blown away both times. My one complaint was that he was slightly guitar heavy last night (i prefer more violin!) but generally amazing. Martin Dosh and the other guys are also a great compliment to him. The version of "marry me" he did in the encore was awesome and sweet and Happy Birthday Song was so different than studio that I didn't recognize it until he started singing. Awesome.

First of all, the show was already worth the time and money by the time the opening act had finished. St. Vincent, namely Annie Clark, did a marvelous job. Andrew Bird put on a spectacular show as expected and even invited St. Vincent back to the stage for a couple of songs. It was very entertaining and nice to see how well they worked together. All around is was a terrific show that I would highly recommend.

Andrew Bird is a singular talent. From the opening instrumental, to the fantastic lighting, to the imaginative looping and soundscapes, it was a star-making show, from start to finish. He's got the songs, the voice, the instrumental prowess, and the stage command to vault him to new heights. The new album sounded awesome, and his band, especially the rhythm section was stellar all night. There was even a moment, midway through the concert, when i said to my wife," this is what the Beatles would sound like if they kept going." What a show, what a night!

I love Andrew Bird. I heard him several years ago at the Ryman in Nashville and in Oxford Mississippi. Great songs. Great sound. Great mood. This time at the Ryman the sound was messed up. There was a hum when he was not playing; it was too loud; it had a bad reverb in it; it sounded close to that large squeal you never want. There were still good songs (OK, the first song was not so good, but otherwise . . .) He tried hard to make it work. He kept trying hard, but you could tell he was having a hard time. I have never heard the sound be bad in the Ryman before! For the encore, he dropped most of the equipment and went to one mic on the side shared by him and up to two other guys with his fiddle and an acoustic guitar. This part sounded wonderful. Softer, richer sounds. He looked happier. The crowd finally really cheered. I wish the whole concert could have sounded like that; like it has in the past. I have 3 stars for him and the encore but took away two for the worst sound setup by a professional sound crew that I have heard!

Andrew Bird was joined by Tift Merritt (acoustic guitar and vocals), Alan Hampton (double bass), Eric Heywood (pedal steel, guitar), and Kevin O'Donnell (drum) at Rough Trade on june 7th, 2014. The setlist featured selections from Things Are Really Great here, Sort Of..., his new collection of songs by The Handsome Family, and included a few items from recent albums such as "Danse Caribe," "Pulaski at Night," and "Three White Horses." According to Bird, this was the new band's first performance, and there were a few false starts, but this simply added to the charm of the performance, as did the intimate nature of the venue. This was the first of two shows that night, so it was brief, clocking in at about an hour plus encores. Nevertheless, there was splendid musicianship on display. Andrew Bird is an extremely creative violin player, and the harmony vocals between Bird, Merritt and Hampton were lovely. A very memorable show. And yes, whistling...

I've seen Andrew Bird multiple times, always inspiring. His talent is indescribable... But this show was terrible. I absolutely regret making the couple hour drive to see that performance. The show started off great, I had high hopes. And then... He introduced us to this 'band' of sorts he was going to play with and omg were they awful. I forget the name of the woman that was singing with him, but it was as if I was watching some horrid country music show. She was very twangy, played an acoustic guitar which is simply just not my favorite instrument. Andrew hardly showcased his talent on the violin the rest of the night. I could go on and on about how bad it was, but I wont waste my time, I already wasted enough time seeing the show. Please Andrew, for the love of God, stop playing with other artists. Each time I've seen you perform solo, you were hundreds of times better than any time with a band. I think I speak for many of your fans when I say, we just want to see Andrew Bird.

Andrew Bird and the band had a really tight performance despite Andrew Bird's cold and the technical difficulties, which ended up being a perfect one-mic configuration for the Ryman auditorium. The set and lighting were beautiful, and the sound was well balanced, even from the side of the auditorium and you were allowed to look at the stage up close prior to the concert. The set list was a great mix of Bird's older and newer songs as well as some American folk/country tunes as the encore, a great choice for the Nashville setting. I also appreciated being allowed to take photos during the concert. Over all, minus the piercingly loud and talkative audience member who sat in the same row as me and the oddly stoic and still crowd, I enjoyed the concert. In terms of the price, the tickets got significantly pricier compared to the baseline ticket price and this plus the price to park around downtown Nashville made the evening rather expensive.

Really a concert unlike any other I've seen. The setting, the instruments, the voice. Worth seeing even if you don't know his work that well.

I came to the show unsure of how well Andrew Bird and St. Vincent would do. They are some of my favorite musicians, but the tickets were a bit more pricy than the some other shows. I was wondering if I had spent "too much" for the concert. I was absolutely blown away from how well they did. My mind exploded when I heard them!

Show was great but did not get started until half past eight....a warm up act played for an hour and was not impressive, a twosome from Hudson, NY. Bird and his group of three played their hearts out. The only criticism I have is that insufficient credits were given to the drummer and the other two men on guitar and keyboard. I tried to find out the name of the drummer but was unsuccessful despite searching online, etc.

Even playing through technical difficulties (monitor issues?) Andrew Bird put on an amazing set. So many different instrument changes I couldn't keep up, not sure how he does. First time at UPAC, great venue, super helpful staff, easy parking. Wish it were closer!

Wow!!! I heard Andrew Bird on WFUV and then my daughter gave me his Are You Serious cd as a gift. I love it! Well, were my husband and I taken aback by his incredible talent. I am a sucker for the violin, especially when it is played other than as a classical instrument. I have never heard some of the ways he plays. His use of live "dubbing" is so great. I don't know what that sound instrument is called that whirls, but it was very cool. I will definitely go see him again and again!

I was recently fortunate to see Andrew Bird at the Bergen PAC on the evening of March 1. Additional rows of folding chairs put me up close enough to see his striped sock when he removed his shoe to manipulate his looping device. Not only can this incredibly talented individual sing, whistle, and play violin, guitar, and xylophone, but the music he writes is lushly balanced, his lyrics thoughtful and compelling, and his voice -- ah, his voice transportive. Andrew Bird is an artist who puts his all into his work and then shares it utterly. He also has a talent for selecting superb musicians to accompany him -- his drummer this time around is particularly gifted. I look forward to Andrew Bird's next musical release, in the near future and for years to come. :)

Having been a fan for years, the opp arose to see AB locally. Did not disappoint. Quite the contrary. Amazing is an understatement. Genre busting pure talent. Firm grasp of musicianship, poetic lyrical phrasing, brilliant technical use of pedals weaving layers of on the fly samples. Wow. Quite the entertainer. Highly recommended.

Long time fan, only have attended 5 or 6 of his concerts. Went with a dozen friends/fans and almost to a person, we agreed this was in the top 2 or 3 of the shows we'd all been to. Some said it was the single best. Part of the reason was the venue - it was intimate, close to home and nestled in the middle of plenty of fun places to eat or drink. The show featured some incredible songs from the artist newest project - recorded entirely in a river (? - there was a video projection of AB playing violin while standing in shallow water that was flowing - live AB played lead violin against video AB. Very cool as I heard some looping going on at the same time). Small tight band, played everything you'd want to request (except my favorite from AYS, Puma) and a smaller set of of Hanson Family songs, and 'Give It Away' - plus a Neil Young cover - in a circle of just three playing acoustically with smattering of percussion. Andrew seemed in a great mood, played some songs just like the album, others were super detours, keeping it fresh. The only thing I felt was that the audience wasn't comprised mostly of fans; maybe season ticket owners or something? We had a great time no matter.

This was, by far, the best performance by Mr. Bird I've seen. This is number six for me, and this was the most ethereal, resonant, lasting shows in memory. Yes, he's a genius, regardless; but in this context, he played more beautifully and soulfully than I could have anticipated.

The show was fantastic and memorable. This is my favorite venue in the city. You can't beat it. Andrew Bird killed it. I have seen him a few times, and this was my favorite so far. His new band is fantastic. The drummer is a lot of fun to watch.

I had no idea there would not be chairs! Andrew Bird is known for his haunting lyrics and storytelling songs, but the sound system made his words indistinguishable. We left after a few songs. Hope he comes back and plays an acoustic set in a venue with seats!

Made me cry! His song selection was incredible, and the venue was great. I don't go to concerts very often, but my boyfriend and I love his music, so I got the tickets for his birthday. We broke up the weekend before the show, but we still wanted to go. Still a great experience.

This was a beautiful venue and upon arriving and seeing the stage setup, I felt like I was on another planet! Very unusual. But as the show went on, all the songs started sounding the same to me. Most had very abrupt and weird endings that were just not all that interesting. People say that it's amazing that he can create so many different sounds. Isn't most of it recorded? I was hearing music when it was apparent he wasn't playing anything at the moment. It was an interesting evening, and I don't regret going, but it was all a little too gimmicky, experimental, and Yoko Ono-ish for my taste. I definitely would not go to another.

My boyfriend's gps led us to the UC Davis campus instead of Mondavi Center so we arrived 10 minutes after the concert began. I must have misread something on the ticketmaster website about the service fee being for parking at Mondavi. I became extremely upset paying over $100 in money I don't have for a concert of a bunch of recorded sounds. If I had known I'd paid $100 for something as lesser as a street concert I would have never attended. I wish I could have that money I spent on disappointment back. Shame on me.

Not having seen Andrew Bird before, I was not sure what to expect, but I was not disappointed. The sounds he is able to extract from a single violin and the way he loops them to build a backing track has to be seen to be believed and his voice is perhaps better live than on CD.

When I heard Andrew Bird was coming to NYC I was excited, but even more so when I found out the venue. The Riverside Church is a spectacle alone, but add to that the aural treat of Mr. Bird's sound and word and you have a little bit of Heaven on Earth. The vocal way he uses his violin to portray the unspeakable is his true genius. He is a wordsmith as well. Several songs with guitar from his most recent album hit home, especially the title track, "Break it Yourself." His set is decorated with large Victrola bells, some of which revolve to create interesting sound effects using live recording loop.He added a female vocalist and concert bass to flesh out the show, but nothing is as exciting as when the solo man whistles like my granddad, croons like a balladeer and plays the violin like a gypsy angel. I was floating all the way home.

I think the first part of the show set the tone which a little too mellow for us. It was as if we were listening to someone practice/experiment. Although it was interesting is just wasn't a entertaining performance. It made me a little sleepy and everything started to sound the same. We were a little disappointed that we didn't hear a few more favorites. Also I didn't care for the backdrop/setting. The very large screen that changed colors (ugly colors) behind them was just too out of proportion to the band. The spinning speakers (type things) were also quite ugly - this was something I could see myself liking if they were integrated into the set a little more?? I didn't feel like I wasted money but I would never go again.
