The Phantom of the Opera (Chicago)

The Phantom of the Opera (Chicago)

Following an acclaimed sell-out tour of the United Kingdom, Cameron Mackintosh's spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's phenomenal musical success, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, will make its premiere in Chicago as part of a brand new US National Tour. Hailed as "Stunning, intense and spectacular" by the Sunday Express, this production features a brilliant new design by Paul Brown, costumes by the much missed Maria Björnson, a new staging by Laurence Connor — director of the recent acclaimed 25th anniversary celebration at the Royal Albert Hall — and new choreography by Scott Ambler. The production is overseen by Matthew Bourne and Cameron Mackintosh.

The Play was amazing and the seats gave us a great view of every aspect of it. The continuous action of the dynamic/moving set was incredible and really added to the quality of the showing.

I bought tickets for my fiance back in October as a Christmas gift because he is a big fan of Phantom. I normally buy the cheapest tickets possible for performances, but the higher price tag was definitely worth it for these seats (ORCH-L Row M). We had a great view of the stage. The set, costume, and choreography were incredible. The actor who played the phantom had a flawless performance, but I wasn't as thrilled with Raoul. I've heard several singing styles for the music of this, and Raoul just happened to choose one that wasn't my favorite. Otherwise the music was wonderful as to be expected. I wouldn't mind seeing it a second time.

First of all, I am a musician and approach music a bit differently than non-musicians. I'm far more critical of the music and hear errors almost instantly. The music was performed exactly as it is on the CD with no noticeable errors. Secondly, the play was excellent. All performers sang wonderfully and were very good. The only negative, if it is a negative, was the role of the Phantom. I cant put my finger on it but something was off with his singing. It was still very good but it caught my ear at the play.

I saw Phantom of the Opera the first time in 1990. I thought that production was brilliant, but the recent production of the Phantom by Cameron MacIntosh was absolutely superior in every way. The scenery and singing was superb, unsurpassable. In my opinion, "Phantom" is Andrew Lloyd Webber's winning musical in every way. The songs are unforgettable---they stick in your head like no others. I have seen "Cats" five times when I lived in London; I've seen "Evita" "Aspects of Love" and "Les Miserables" but somehow, "Phantom of the Opera" is the most memorable of modern musicals. I think it's already a classic. Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical genius shines through. I would recommend this musical to anyone who loves beautiful music and a great storyline as well.

While the show seemed to be promising it was actually very disappointing. First of all we went on opening night and didn't even get the phantom! We got his understudy! Second of all pacing was pretty bad. The actors and actressed embelished way to much every song and just dragged out the first half like crazy. They also ruined many parts like not having christine pull off the mask the first time and the phantom didn't yell at all which is always the scariest part when he gets mad. Oh and I'm sorry but Raoul was HORRIBLE! He was acting like a spoiled little boy. Not a man in love. It was just overall extremely dissapointing

I have seen Phantom many times. This was my 5th show I believe and by far one of the best productions. The actor playing the Phantom was everything the Phantom should be: foreboding and strong yet tender and emotional. And his voice was AMAZING...very powerful. Loved it and the show brought me to tears which was a first.

We went on January 7, 2017 to the evening performance. We have seem the previous productions in previous years. This was by far the best performance ever. We actually enjoyed better than Hamilton. The voices and most of them were not the originals. Sorry to see it go from Chicago. It's a must see. The acting was also amazing they just kept you so involved. Can't say enough about them. This was a Christmas gift for my Mom and family. I am not a fan of musicals, but like the Phantom. I think the production was good. The pyrotechnics were really unnecessary and created a wicked stench with many people coughing. I really appreciate the talent.

I seen the Phantom on Broadway several times a year as I bring many newbies for their first Broadway show. I traveled to Boston's Opera House two years ago and just saw the show again in Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theater. The staging for the show is spectacular given the size of the theater. The Phantom played by Derrick Davis was dramatic and his voice was incredible. Trista Moldavan who played Christine on Broadway is now Carlotta on Tour! A great show with fabulous actors! Highly recommend!!!

I fully expected the leads to have amazing voices and they did, even though we had a stand in for female lead. If that voice was the stand in, I cannot imagine what the female lead voice would have been. What surprised me was the intensity of the production. Tremendous! Really helped tell the story. Thank you for a very satisfying experience.

I took my 16 year old Son who has asked to see this Musical. From the beginning to the end, we were engaged with the characters. The singing was awesome. Loved their costumes. How they were able to use that size stage for the various scenes was amazing. The dropping of the Chandelier over the audience was suspenseful. The theatre was very comfortable and very easy to access our seats. The ushers were friendly and professional. I wish there was some point when we could have taken a picture as a memory especially since our seats were so close

Have seen Phantom at least 15 times over the past 25 years (New York, London, Chicago, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis). The music and actors performance was still a classic and very well presented. Staging was left somewhat wanting because of the size of the stage and not being able to crash the chandelier down on the stage. Certainly "Masquerade" lost some of its luster not having the ability to make the opening of the second act a really big thing. In London the audience "demanded" an encore of this scene. All in all Phantom is a must see over and over again. Certainly it's Andrew Lloyd Webber's most memorable classic.

This was an exceptional performance. The power and emotion displayed by Derrick Davis as the Phantom was awesome. I thought Katie Travis, as Christine, fell a little short. She has a wonderful soprano voice, but lacks the power and trembling emotion needed for the role. The set design was inspired and gave a fresh approach to keeping pace with the story. I did feel a little disappointed with the power the Chandelier played in this production. All in all a truly great performance.

I can't call a few stringed instruments supplemented with 3 keyboards an orchestra. Don't get me wrong, for what they had they were great. But they didn't have much to work with. Somewhere along the line someone cheaped out. Which is okay...except for the prices we paid!

After enjoying The Phantom of the Opera on several previous occasions and in different locations (including the stunning production in Toronto, Canada, I'm sorry to report this this performance was a disappointment. The main concern was simply that the actors couldn't be understood. The volume level was more than adequate (in fact the stage/orchestra balance at times favored the orchestra at the expense of the actors) but the words were unintelligible for the most part. You could tell others were having the same problem because the audience reactions to the comedic moments were "muted" at best. I'm not prepared to place blame but we've had similar problems at Cadillac Palace in the past. However, the recent Finding Neverland production was perfectly understandable so I can't really blame the venue. Further, the cast was not the strongest we've enjoyed in previous productions of Phantom. Some of it had to do with the basic casting but, again, because of the lack of understanding, the characters just didn't come across with the clarity we've experienced before. I realize and appreciate that, as a touring show, one can't expect the same extraordinary staging and special effects of a resident production so we'll excuse those shortcomings. All that said, if you haven't attended Phantom before I'm sure you'll enjoy this production. It will definitely be to your advantage if you're already familiar with the lyrics.

I adore the show and have watched 7 performances in 3 major cities since 1991. While I enjoyed the new structure that served as the stairway to the Phantom's lair, I certainly missed the original illusion of the slanted ramps leading downward. Also, a huge change I was not a fan of was the elimination of the Masquerade stairway. My teenage daughter was attending this performance with me as her first time and was disappointed with that also. Lastly, I expected a better chandelier crash. Overall, the cast did a superb job!!!! Kudos to the orchestra!!!

I have seen The Phantom of the Opera live twice, I worn out my CD copy of the soundrack from the original London cast, and I own the movie with Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler. That being said, Derrick Davis' voice is wonderful. He plays the Phantom with such emotion and passion. This was my niece's first time at the theatre and she was speechless. During intermission, I brought her down by the orchestra pit. She plays the flute and we were able to speak to both the flutists. They were both very friendly. Overall it was a wonderful experience and I look forward to my next visit to the Cadillac Palace Theater.

I'll preface this with I'm not your classic theatre guy, but my girlfriend and I really enjoyed this production. The rotating stage set and the music was absolutely phenomenal, and the acting was fairly good. It did have a little more ballet than i would like, and i did notice they changed the ending a bit, but i will definitely say its worth seeing. Kept me captivated for the majority of it. Also, there's pyrotechnics, gunshots, and other stuff to excite the less interested. i would absolutely recommend catching this before it leaves the area.

I've seen the show on stage in Detroit in 2008! I've seen the movie, 25th anniversary, and countless videos of different productions! This new production just blew me away! The aspects of bringing ideas from the '04 movie and bringing them in was such a great thing to do. There is a completely new feel to the musical. The stageing adds to that and the sets were amazing. Going down to the lair the first time, with the new set, just added great effect! It was truly the best version of The Phantom that I have seen in any form!!

I have been very skeptical about this new production of Phantom. Re-stage and change a show that has been running successfully since 1986 and is much loved by thousands and thousands of people all over the world? ---Maybe not such a good idea and certainly not anything I had ever wanted done. I've seen the original production several times and love it. Howsomever, my general impression of this new production is that I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. Why? First, the orchestra was excellent---17 live musicians playing the beautiful score. The music was also well sung. I couldn't really find any fault with the three leads or the secondary performers---no disappointment there---and the chorus sounded great. I think the dancing was fine also although I'm not as interested in dancing as in other things and don't know much about it. Acting? Mostly good, I think. I don't particularly like an angry, violent Phantom like the one we see in the last scene of this show, but Cooper Grodin does an angry, violent Phantom well. Julia Udine was pretty, young , appealing--a little more feisty and sexy in some scenes than is usual. Ben Jacoby is, perhaps, a rather more forceful Raoul but not very different from most Raouls as far as I remember. The actress playing Carlotta is a hoot, Piangi is also pretty funny and enjoyable, and Linda Balgord as Madame Giry is appropriately stern. The Managers are funny and got laughs. ---Speaking of funny, this version IS funnier than the original. There aren't any big changes; but new little bits of business are well-performed and make the humor fresher and better. All the actors did quality professional jobs. The costumes? ---good enough but not outstanding. The advertising and interviewed Creative Team members proclaim that the show retains the Maria Björnson costume designs. Some, maybe most, were Björnson's ---but some were not, I think---or somehow not quite the same. My opinion is that the costumes were good enough not to distract but not obviously opulent or lovely----except for a couple of Carlotta's dresses that did look opulent. The Phantom for whatever reasons is in his shirt sleeves a lot of the time. Things I didn't like or found wanting? Perhaps the first and biggest disappointment for me was the absence of the gold proscenium, draped and covered during the opening auction scene. When the overture pounded in with the organ track and the live musicians in the tour show, my heart lifted, but not as much, not as much, as it does in the original show, where we see the drapes fall from the proscenium and begin the transformation of the space from the dusty old opera house to the opera house of the story. The sets…..some of them looked pretty good, but I think that the essential problem with the sets in this show, which have been described by members of the creative team and by critics as more realistic, is that it is hard to make flats and roll-in set pieces look very realistic. The big moving "barrel" that provides stairs and has many other uses is good, but some of the other scenes looked a little tacky to me. With the Hal Prince black-box design, there wasn't really an attempt to make the sets look realistic much of the time. It was obvious, for instance, that Christine's dressing room was only part of a room, realistic in details, but clearly a construct. The rest of the backstage area was in darkness. The Phantom's Lair consisted of an organ, a portcullis, and a throne, little else. The designers didn't try to make it look like a real room. in these examples and others in Hal Prince's show, the audience's imagination and effective lighting filled in any dark empty areas as necessary. We in the audience have to suspend our disbelief and let ourselves feel, for the moment, that what goes on on stage is real. I didn't find that the more realistic sets did as good a job of helping us do that as the more stylized sets of the Prince production. I might be wrong in this next judgement, but I THINK that the re-imagined sets of the tour are mostly designed to use a smaller space than many of the sets of the original show. A number of the tour scenes have the roll-on box seats on the left and right so that the main scene deals only with the middle part of the stage. "Masquerade" uses the full stage. Everything in the trip to the Lair through the mist is smaller and less impressive. I missed SPECTACLE more than I thought I would. We were in the front row of the Dress Circle, but that was a poor place to see the Chandelier. MAYBE that was why I was underwhelmed by its pop-banging and tinkling. The statue of Apollo on the Opera house doesn't look too bad when it was just standing there nakedly while Christine and Raoul sing "All I Ask of You, " but after they leave, and it moves forward with the Phantom hanging on and being distraught, it wobbles as the cheap piece of easily moveable scenery it is. ----and distracts from the emotion that should be at a peak at this point. I thought the managers' office looked good, and the mirrored ballroom was effective in "Masquerade," but my general impression of the sets is that too often they looked…kind of cheap. Another problem that intruded into the story for me was that some actions seemed unmotivated, or in one case I can remember, just kind of silly. In "Point of No Return," toward the end of the scene, two men with pistols come out from opposite sides of the stage and level their guns at the Phantom, who was standing on the table at that time, an easy target. After a little more action and singing, they simply back off stage without firing a shot, leaving the Phantom free to grab Christine and carry her off to the Lair. Nobody says "Don't shoot." they just back off for no reason that is evident in what has been going on. An example of something that struck me as silly happened in the grave yard scene. Christine beautifully sang "Wishing" to her father's pathetic, undersized tomb, and the Phantom just sort of strolled out from the shadows and came over to her---as if he had just happened to be taking a walk in the cemetery, and there she was. The two men grappling didn't add anything. The new-style fireballs were good, though! Another example of the silly or unmotivated: After "Music of the Night, " Christine just…goes to sleep. Sure thing. THE END OF THE SHOW Despite the problems I've described, I did get a tear in my eye after Christine and Raoul left and the Monkey Music Box played---and the Phantom looked up. i do think, however, that the throwing around and choking of Christine by the Phantom makes it harder for the audience to make the sudden change to sympathy for the Phantom, but I don't much like rough, angry portrayals in the original production either. In this production, I think sympathy for the Phantom is less than it could/should be. He doesn't interact with the music box, doesn't pick up the veil and abandon it along with his hope or do anything else to show how shattered he is. He just looks at the music box and walks miserably over to the side of the stage, and---it looked like--- he leaned on something and pulled his cloak over himself and…??? I'm not sure just what happened next. It was dark over there. There's no portcullis, but Meg comes in, goes over to the Phantom, and puts her arms around his shoulders and back (assumedly) in what looked to me like a protective way-----trying to protect him from the mob that is coming after him. WHY? I don't remember ANYthing in the show that would prepare us for Meg to be protective of the Phantom. Somebody pulls the cloak away, and I guess the Phantom is gone. I couldn't see clearly. Meg picks up a mask and holds it up, but not for long, and a spot light catches it only for a moment. Weak. To end on a positive note, the trio, which is not heard in the United States, IS IN THE GRAVEYARD SCENE. it is glorious!

This was my first time seeing Phantom of the Opera on stage, and I could not have been more pleased with the performance. Having grown up enjoying the movie and soundtrack, it was always a dream of mine to see the story live. The talent was incredible, stage setup awe-inspiring and overall atmosphere magical. I am blessed to be able to fulfill this dream, especially to see an outstanding performance by the Phantom. Highly recommend.

The Phantom of the Opera was an amazing performance! The costume designs and the various sets were awesome. The story line was great and the singing was superb. I'm very happy I got to watch the show and recommend it to anyone who enjoys musicals.

This show was outstanding - and I am really not typically a fan of this type of thing. This was a gift for my wife, and I enjoyed it as much as she did. It was excellent.

I absolutely love Phantom of the Opera...Let me rephrase that...I absolutely love the Original production of Phantom of the Opera. I was not impressed with the New Production. Why change an already an amazing musical. Disappointed

We had seen The Phantom of the Opera about 10 years ago but this performance was far better. The actors were amazing and the singing was unforgettable. We've been singing the songs ever since we left the theater. The props, stage, and costumes were beautiful. This is a definite must see for theater lovers.

It was an amazing show....the costumes, the music, the stage props, and most of all the performers.....It was a bit hard to understand all the words sung but then it was opera style so not so bad...the next time it returns to Chicago we will go and enjoy the play again.

We have seen Phantom previously in both New York and Chicago, and in some ways this was the best we've seen! The voices (as always) were outstanding, and the revolving set was really spectacular. A first-rate production.

The musical itself was fantastic. The singing was incredible. However; if there was one thing I could have changed...it was the temperature in the theatre!! It was SO HOT!! But again, the performance was FANTASTIC!!!

This was our third time in seeing Phantom and we were extremely disappointed. The sound was terrible - the individual singing sounded like the mikes were going in and out (from audible to not being able to hear Christine or The Phantom), staging during the middle of the last scene Act 1 failed halfway through the scene, and the curtain had to be brought down for 10 minutes, the Masquerade scene was the worst. The Phantom makes his appearance like Michael Jackson - what was with that staging? The play resembled the story line of the movie more than the original play. It was not worth what we paid for 7 tickets. It was also very warm in the theater.

I had previously seen this show in New York City, and while the Chicago performance was great, there were definitely some differences from the NYC version. Understandably the set is quite different for a traveling show. This is not to say that the show isn't worth seeing, because it definitely is. I would also recommend sitting closer (we were in row T), because noticing the little details up close is worth the extra money. Overall this was an incredible show that I would recommend to anyone.

The Phantom was exquisite once again. The understudies in 2 of the lead parts were perfect. Visual effects were the best we've seen. The Cadillac Palace has a smaller stage than the stages I've seen the Phantom on before. Thus, the masquerade party was all down on the flat stage, whereas on a bigger stage, a wide staircase made the party scene more interesting and 3-dimensional. Costumes for most all of it were absolutely beautiful! Only difference there was that the masquerade costumes were not as elaborate like Cirque de Soleil costumes as we've seen in the past. At the end, one or two songs were sung faster than the recordings, didn't like that. One other difference from previous performances was that the chandelier didn't look antique - it was the newer, 50's-60's looking kind, without the crystal pieces singularly hanging, as we saw many, many years ago. It has stuck in my brain that the chandelier should like a beautiful, spooky antique. When unveiled, it looked more new-fab. The boat scenes were so beautiful with the fog coming from under the boat. The scenes on the staircase way up high in the opera house were much more visible than previous performances. The scene created in the graveyard was awesome. Loved the way that Christine disappeared into the mirror with the phantom in the first act. There are not many stalls in the bathrooms in this theater, but employees helped to make it flow quickly. We were herded out too quickly after the show, though there was a later performance. We just wished we could watch it all again and slow it down to catch more of the dialogue, even though I know most of it by heart. The Cadillac Palace was so elegant and fitting for the Phantom. We will remember this performance for years to come, and wish that we could see it again and again!

The Cadillac Palace is a time machine in the best possible way. Breathtakingly beautiful interior and well laid out. The show itself was all I hoped it would be. The cast was fantastic and the Phantom stole the show with his voice. The special effects and pageantry exceeded my expectations. We sat in the balcony and no complaints on sound or line of sight.

Amazing set design. Ticketmaster seating chart misrepresents actual venue floor plan. We were waaayyyyyy in the back against a wall under mezz. Sound was poor and opera singing words indistinguishable. Most of the actors were back ups for NYE show.

I have seen the original Phantom many times in NY, Chicago, Toronto etc and loved it each and every time. So I was curious about the revamp - - well curiosity is quenched and I was not happy. The music was wonderful and pretty much the same but the things you look forward to like the candelabras during the boat scene or the monkey costume during masquerade were not there - when she rips off his mask the first time....nope he takes it off.....I guess I am just a purist to the original show so I was pretty disappointed in this one. I have to go to NY and see the original again to feel better. As for the theatre I can't stand the movie theatre eating.....it is noisy and when you leave people don't all pick up after themselves - similar to a movie - they need to eliminate that part of the theatre experience.

We were all disappointed by this performance. We didn't feel much chemistry between the actors and the Phantom was frequently unintelligible. We were not sure if it was the sound system or the actors.

We had the wonderful fortune of seeing a matinee performance of the Phantom of the Opera at the Cadillac Palace Theater. Wonderful venue with helpful staff, terrific view from our balcony seats and the cast of Phantom knocked it out of the park! Absolutely fabulous experience for our family!

Phantom is one of my all time favorites and having seen it several times in different cities over the last 25 years, this might have been my favorite production yet. I brought my 10 year old daughter and she enjoyed it too. It was her first non-disney theatrical production and she is hooked.
