This was an amazing musical! The songs were great and the characters memorable. The story has the right combination of macabre humor and humanity that has the audience laughing at the deaths of each family member; my favorite was the death of Lady Salome D'Ysquith Pumphrey. My husband, who doesn't enjoy musicals, enjoyed this one; he even took the time to look up the music after seeing the show. That's how great this show is, it will have people who don't enjoy musicals fall in love.

How can I not love a musical? I don't know but it was just not my kind of humor I guess. It seemed like it was over the top and almost slapstick. The music was good and had some complexity to it but there weren't the typical solos and striking or moving moments that I'm used to in musicals. Most people seemed to really like it so my opinion is not a common one but it just wasn't as expected overall.

This show is based on a old novel that was turned into one of my favorite British comedies, "Kind Hearts and Coronets." Happily the transfer from novel to film to stage went well and the result is a delight. A wonderfully inventive staging, with projections used as I've never seen them before. Mind you, you might not come away humming the tunes - though "Poison in My Pocket" is devilishly clever - but you'll have a marvelous time. The road company, having played only one previous date, was fresh and quite on top of things (October 2015, Durham NC).

"A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder" was simply fantastic in all respects. The quality of all singing was giant, the orchestra was excellent, the stage sets were incredibly well thought out and cleverly contributed to the audience experience, the costuming was excellent, and the show itself appeared to have been run flawlessly. It was such a pleasure to be able to wholeheartedly enjoy the show and its jokes and fun and pageantry just like a child might. Perhaps not a show for the pretentiously sophisticated, but my friends and I had such fun!

I was so happy when DPAC announced that Gentleman's Guide would be part of the 2015/2016 Broadway series. Every since I saw the Tony Awards and saw just a bit I've wanted to see this musical and it was worth every penny.

When my daughter and I visited NYC last spring, Gentleman's Guide was the one show on our priority list that we weren't able to catch, so we jumped at the chance to see it at DPAC. It did not disappoint! Except for the size of the house, we couldn't tell that we weren't right back on Broadway, and at intermission, we were able to move from the upper balcony to 4th row orchestra seats whose occupants had never arrived. From both locations, the music, the costumes, the staging, the sound, and - of course - the performances - were all at a level that would wow us in NYC or anywhere else in the world. We will be coming back to DPAC very soon!

My wife and I missed Book of Mormon when it was originally here in Raleigh/Durham and spent the next the year trying to catch it at our vacation locations across the country; eventually succeeding in Washington, DC. Comparatively, I enjoyed this much, much more. Unfortunately, A Gentleman's guide to Love and Murder only has short tour dates, on average 3-4 days, so by the time someone you know sees and tells you about it,,,IT'S GONE. GREAT ACTING, GREAT MUSIC, GREAT SET. The DYSQUITH'S ARE DYING TO SEE YOU!

It is always interesting to see how the Brits view their aristocracy with equal parts admiration and bemused contempt. A Gentlemen's Guide to Love and Murder is a delightful romp through the thinning of the upper ranks. The actor playing the entire D Ysquith family gave a tour de force performance of quick changes and comedic timing. Odd to find one's self rooting for a serial murderer, but, really, what's a gentleman to do? The entire cast gave a bravura performance that was enjoyable start to finish, with wonderful staging and a delightful, if somewhat twisted story. Well worth the cost of admission, in all respects.

it was my daughter's 21st birthday and we both enjoy the theater and this was really the only play in town. also i had high expectations due to the plays receipt of last year's tony for best musical. this is a 'period piece' which took place in the early 1900s in london. the costumes were gorgeous, although not really my cup of tea. the accents combined with the singing made it sometimes hard to understand the words and dialogue. the singing was more 'classical' bordering on operatic which while outstanding in and of itself, is just not our style. the actors were talented and the stage was fun. the tickets were extremely expensive and compared to all other plays i have seen, this one was just ok.

The sound system was absolutely atrocious. In the third row, center of the loge, we could hear but not understand. All the musical lyrics were impossible to decipher. Some of the spoken word was, but only 20%. So we had no idea what was happening, unless the cast was doing pantomime. The cast was energetic and did excellent pantomime. Their singing was in Tuen and well ktimed with the pantomime, so this was not their fault. The soundboard needed a complete reset. We had friends on the right side of loge -row A -who had same issue and left at intermission. It was very disappointing, especially since I have little idea what actually was happening in the show.

We had Excellent seats; 3rd row center in loge section. With these good seats you would think we could hear everything. Wrong. Much of the singing was high pitched and not very clear. We had to guess who she was saying. We got the gist of the play just missed out on the details. The falsetto voices were the same, not enough enunciation. The premise looked good, but that is only an outline. The fun is in the details.

The show was wonderful. The actor s voices were top notch. Went expecting a great time but was even surprised by how much we enjoyed it. The special things they did with the set were our favorite. The play was very clever in many ways. First one actor playing 8 parts. And doing them so well. The stage set was the most clever I had ever seen. This show is curious to say the least. The story is of Monty Navarro, a poor man living in New York City who discovers that he's not only a member of the aristocratic D'Ysquith family in England, he's also ninth in line to inherit the earldom of Highhurst. He then proceeds to "take care of" each of the D'Ysquith family member inheritors in order for him to become Lord Montague "Monty" D'Ysquith Navarro, Ninth Earl of Highhurst, but can he get away with it?! The sets in this show are detailed, and unique to each character and their situations. The costumes greatly reflect the Edwardian era style of fashion making the show a very time-period piece. The music was nice to listen to. The acting in this show was campy, energetic, and very well done. Some actors play multiple roles but the best one is the actor who plays the D'Ysquith family. He alone plays 9 different D'Ysquith family members, each with their own unique characteristics. However, the show did have some cons. They seemed to have staged the show inside a mini theater on stage, which reduced the amount of space the actors had to work with, however they made up for it by using some of the best screen/sound/special effects I've seen! Due to the restrictive fashion in 1907, there wasn't much choreography when it came to the musical numbers. The songs were nice to listen to but pretty forgettable. The acting was very well done but because it's a comedy and takes place in early 1900's England, the characters spoke with exaggerated old-timey sounding British accents that made it difficult to understand what they were saying or singing at times. Lastly, while there were some funny moments, there were also some dull ones. I almost feel like this show would have worked better as a full on play rather than a musical. Having said that, I by no means hate this show. The way the D'Ysquiths die, the special effects, and the ending make worth seeing this show at least once.

This show was not my favorite. Our disappointment in the show was our own fault. I didn't research it enough to know it was an operetta. I have been to the Au-Rene Theater countless times. From our usual box seats--and perhaps this was our error--the play came across as rather flat and somewhat difficult to understand. Quite possibly it was due to the few hiccups that the sound engineer experienced during the performance I attended. Perhaps it was us perched on the boxes, rather than on the floor.Or perhaps--and I tend to lean towards this one--we were simply NOT in New York City. I am aware that they were voted Best Musical by a number of groups (Tony, Darma Desk, Outer Critics, Drama League) but none of those means anything to us since it is widely known that it is all political and heavily dependent on the business end of the deal, rather than the artistic angle. Local newspapers have this piece based on the adaptation of Horniman's novel. It was closer to a very average adaptation of that masterpiece of English black comedy: Kind Hearts and Coronets. And I would prefer the film adaptation to the novel. Still, it was a gallant attempt. The singing was highly professional. The acting was as it should be on stage. Scenic arrangement was excellent, given the limited space. But if you relish the story, rent the film and enjoy.

The musical was wonderFul, creative and deserved the Tony for Best Musical. THIS audience gets an F- This is a recurrent problem at BPAC and all theaters.. Besides instructing people to turn off there cellphones, tell them to turn off their mouths.. I am tired SHUSING people. They think they are in their living rooms. I do not pay good money to listen/yell over the performers singing to talk to their friends. Seniors are the worst culprits and THEY should know better. You have to start printing in Playbill THEATER ETIQUETTE. Screaming at curtain calls is nerve racking and those IDIOTS rushing out during curtain call should be not allowed back into any theaters. Tell them to sit in their cars at Intermission and leave NOW to avoid congestion. The Garage personnel are not helpful moving traffic along they just sit at the corner of the garage picking their noses (observed) .WHY is the BPRC selling food items in cellophane wrappers. I heard the wrapping noise all through the second act. Theaters are afraid of reprimanding rude patrons due to-possible business loss. Your losing MORE people because they will not return to chaos. Their is no respect for anyone else, but these rubes plain selfish actions I DARE you to print this and you won't as usual. Ignore and you will loose more business.

Left at the intermission. Could not understand the accent so only 'got' about 1/10 of the jokes. People laughed at odd times, someone sits down and a some would howl with laughter. Not funny and a bad waste of money. DON'T GO.

I thought the sound was handled badly. Sopranos were "shrieking." It may have been where I was sitting, but I found it difficult to understand the lyrics, thus missed most of the laughs. It was OK...not my favorite. A lot of the cast was debuting...that may have been the reason, as opposed to an experienced cast.

My girlfriend and I are not huge fans of musicals. I bought 4 tickets, so we could take two friends with us, not realizing at the time that it was a musical. We were quite pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed this show. The actors were quite talented and had great voices. Each scene was packed with a lot of humor. There was a lot of very clever, funny stuff going on in the background, as one of the characters would be singing. The story line could have been presented with a serious, dark presentation. However, it was done quite humorously. WARNING: this is not something to take young children to.

I saw this on Broadway 2 years before El Paso touring. This group was as good as the NYC troupe. The sound was great, the cast perfect. It got the Tony for a reason!

First of all it is a British speaking musical where the songs are singing of the dialogue so very hard to understand with the British accent what they are actually singing. It is a comedy so even though I couldn't hear very well and understand the words, some actions were funny. Not sure why the set was put so far back on the stage showing at least a 10 row space from the entertainers in most of the play from the distance of the actual front row. I didn't have a chance even in the Founders circle, row B to see the characters clearly. I wish I would have known because I would have stayed home. We left at intermission. I love plays and go all the time, but this was not a favorite at all.

Excellent play...great talented cast and the various "surprises" & "special effects" really enhanced the play! The only downside is that it seems to almost glorify marital infidelity & even murder!

I had never been to the Hippodrome. I was delighted by the exquisite mural and the comfortable seating. This show was phenomenal: the scenery, the music and the costumes were magnificent. The amazing performances completed this wonderful theater experience. There was no a single performer who was less than stellar. Bravo to all connected to the show and thank you.

This national tour of "Gentleman's Guide" is a gem. The performers are expert actors and singers, and the set and costumes are first rate. The show won the Tony for Best Musical in 2014, an honor that was richly deserved. I am so glad I saw this production starring Kevin Massey as Monty and John Rapson who displays great versatility in his portrayal of multiple roles.

Seriously funny. Songs may not be super memorable, but the story and characters more than make up for it.
