Serj Tankian

Serj Tankian

System of a Down founder Serj Tankian was born on August 21, 1967, in Beirut, Lebanon. He and his family immigrated to Los Angeles in 1975. He studied marketing at California State University and started his own software company before beginning his music career with the formation of System of a Down in 1995. In 1998, System of a Down signed on to Rick Rubin's American imprint, and over the following seven years released five well-received albums, the second of which, Toxicity, thrust them into the forefront of the metal community, garnered a Grammy nomination, and sold millions of copies.

Serj Tankian was amazing, and it is enjoyable to watch him grow as an artist. He has a great range and his compositional skills are maturing to something spectacular. In my opinion, he is the best singer of all time-- however, be warned, this event was not made for low-society creepsters and emo/goth punks. The classless people carrying 4 beers down the stairs scared the old, conservative symphony musicians. Serj had to yell at the crowd to get them to shut up, but they still didn't. IT'S A SYMPHONY--you aren't supposed to be loud. His old fan base needs to either grow up or not show up. They're awful, and I am sure that he regrets ever gaining such passionate, yet stupid sheep fans. He looked like a God and so, the little sheep adored his preaching and essays and EVERYTHING. He is a great musician and a true intellectual, but people shouldn't be mindlessly approving of everything he says; it is disgusting

Love Chastain.. My fifth time there First 4 were excellent. This one was truly a waste of my money! Only highlight was ASO and they only played 15 minutes. Hope I choose better next time..

When I heard Serj was playing with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, I couldn't believe it. I HAD to go. The crowd was incredibly diverse. So many different people with different styles. Clouds loomed overhead and threatened rain from the moment we arrived. The orchestra opened and masterfully performed a modern and upbeat selection. During the break I went and purchased ponchos, to ensure it wouldn't rain (It never did.) As I sat in my seat Serj took the stage and the symphony started to play... The first piece started weak and tentative, but Serj then read a piece about tearing down borders and invited everyone to find any open seat and enjoy the show. The second song started to build intensity. Serj and the ASO were in tune they fed off each other. As the first climactic moment approached, Serj's voice road atop a tsunami of sound and suddenly a cluster of lightening bolts flew across the sky, never touching the ground. I will never forget that moment. The rest of the show lived up to that moment and it was a fantastic concert filled with B-sides and rarities. If this show ever happens again, I will be there, but I fear that this was a once in a lifetime experience. Thank you, Serj and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra!

Serj did not disappoint. It was a great set of music with the full symphony (only full one for his US tour he said). His unique voice being the center of the show was great. Sometimes the drums, guitar, etc take away from vocals. Not this time. It was all about him, as I wanted it to be. Replete with white suit, his stage presence was as expected and heartfelt. What an enjoyable evening outside with melodic sounds and staccato vocals. Only wish more people had come out to see it, rain or no rain. It barely sprinkled! Would definitely go again!

Based on the reviews of Serj with System of a Down, I was expecting him to be arrogant and boring. Serj Tankian was neither. I have been to over 50 concerts in the past 15 years, and this was hands down one of the best. Serj was gracious and thankful, and you could tell he truly enjoyed performing with a full orchestra behind him. He did not perform any songs from his System days, which was a little disappointing, but I respect that he wants to only do his solo material. I actually only knew 1 of the songs he did, and I was still extremely pleased!! He has a *phenomenal* voice, and he is a true artist! My only true complaint was that the staff at Chaistain Amphitheater let everyone come up to the front, blocking the view of those who paid to be in the first few rows. Had I known that, I would have bought a cheaper ticket and moved up (except I'm respectful of others at concerts, so I wouldnt have done that!) But hey, that's how rock shows go sometimes! A true pleasure to watch perform live with an orchestra!!!

Serj Tankian is by far, the most creative, and fantastic musician and artist of our time. I have seen him 3x before in Atlanta (twice solo, once with system of a down), but this particular concert was totally unique and special. He was backed by a full classical orchestra! His music, somehow, perfectly slips between metal, rock, and classical. A delightful buffet of ear candy. The crowd was small, and we were easily able to get up to the stage without any pushing or shoving. His energy created a happy environment among the listeners, and I saw everyone just truly enjoying themselves. He played a bunch of music from his unreleased album, along with some elect the dead favorites. I had a blast! Can't wait to hear his new album

Lightning cracked in purple skies last night as fuchia, green, and blue lights played across a stage of ASO percussion, woodwinds, dervish-like directing. A likely setting for a person in a white suit, Armenian profile, Armenian eyebrows, Armenian voices (yes, I said voices), Armenian bitterness, and Armenian angst to deliver a fusion of rich ancient music blends, Armenian sparkle, Armenian resilience, Armenian crowd contact and control in a performance that was wailing for us as humans to rise above the fear. Stars fell and fans rose to sing and recite the lyrics which at times danced, shocked, and hauled our hearts up to the stage in a united ache. The sight of an Armenian leading a crowd of so many different people, to raise their hands, holding a flame for world unity was warming. It was brave, stilling and rousing at the same time. A unique show. No borders, humans, no borders!

I think seeing any good contemporary artist sing with the accompaniment of an entire symphony orchestra is exciting, but seeing Serj Tankian with ASO was really a unique experience. I've loved the intergenre collaborations since Metallica developed their S&M album with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra over a decade ago. Serj's efforts definitely didn't disappoint. The sound of the orchestra was amazing, and the quality and clarity of Serj's voice, mixed with his theatricality, was actually really impressive. My only constructive criticism is that I wish he had utilized the orchestra a little bit more; there aren't a lot of places where he wasn't just booming over them. My only real complaint is that the audience treated the concert like a metal show and were screaming and singing for Serj while the orchestra was still playing. As someone who enjoys classical AND metal, I would have liked to have heard it all. All in all, though, this concert was a lot of fun and I'm glad I was able to be there. One last piece of advice - For anyone planning on buying good seats: Don't. No one stays in their seats; I actually had second row seats and had a hard time seeing by the time everyone crammed themselves into the front.

I saw Serj a couple years ago at Joe Louis in Detroit along with the Foo Fighters and my only complaint would be the visual aspect of the show. Being the warm up act I can excuse this as probably the result of not having full use of the stage like the headliner. Musically I loved it, he's not like any other act out there.

I saw this guy a couple of years ago in Philadelphia. He was one of the warm-up bands for the Foo Fighters (the Foo Fighters were awesome). He has a great voice, but all the songs sounded the same, and most annoyingly, he never moved more than 10 feet in either direction on the stage. He kept using this annoying top hat as a prop. It was a shame because the guitarists in the band actually played great, but weren't really showcased (probably because they would have stolen Serj's spotlight!). Most of the people who were sitting around us were just laughing at Serj after 3 songs. I know that you're thinking "well he was a warm-up band and they don't get time to set up and don't get stage props like the headliners do". Well, the only way I can answer that is to say that the other warm-up band (Against Me!) played the same amount of songs and they were great.

Serj Tankian is a true artist. With system of a down under his belt, a book of poetry, and solo albums he is a very dedicated and opinionated artist. His voice is incredible. The range he uses in studio or live gets better and better. I saw system of a down in 2005 and he amazed me then. He amazed me more last night at Chastain Park. I started out in a chair 50 meters from stage. After 3 songs I was right up front. I could see how real he was and felt that this show wasn't for him to get some message across or to promote anything, it was for the fans. Rarely does such a big name artist ask to perform with the ASO. The venue was not crowded. I was unhappy with the company running the parking lots. The parking was way overpriced ($15 just to take advantage of the situation and make a quick buck) I loved how the ASO played for half an hour and Serj came rolling out like the music icon he is with complete confidence. The venue was not crowded so it was a great small show. The ASO was amazing. Serj threw in 2 new songs from the upcoming Imperfect Harmonies album. Came back for one encore and when the crowd cheered for more I suppose serj had to save his voice after belting out great sounds for over an hour. If only I had the opportunity to go backstage...maybe next time.

This has been the third time that I saw Serj perform with an orchestra and it is simply amazing every single time. Dan Monti's background vocals are more than just the icing on the cake. It really adds a lot. That guy is pretty brilliant. The venue is really nice. Parking is easy, drinks are reasonably priced. Sound was good. Seat could have been better but overall great show.

I had seen Serj before at a SOAD performance, but I can say that this was a nice change and a more personal feel. His haunting melodies, paired up with the orchestra's powerful sound made it a performance to remember. The visual stage lights blended so well with the music and provided added impact. I loved it!! It was such a great show. Serj Tankian has one of the most amazing voices, and being backed by the ASO instead of a rock band, you really got to hear the full range of his abilities. I am looking forward to picking up his CD and I would definitely go back to see him again, especially backed by the ASO. They were amazing, my son plays the viola in high school, and I know he would have just loved the performance.

This was my first time seeing either Serj or the ASO perform. I had high expectations, and Serj delivered. Amazing stage presence, great energy, and top-notch vocals. Serj is indeed a talented musician. The only thing that could be improved was the ASO. At times, they had trouble keeping up with the energy that Serj kept delivering. There were signs that Serj adjusted his performance for the orchestra (which I feel is necessary for any rock musician, since an orchestra is incapable of completely replacing a rock band, and vice-versa), but the ASO still seemed lacking in their output at points. I've been told that this can occur for orchestras that aren't used to performing as backup for a lead vocalist. Overall, though, it was a unique concert experience.

Serj gives me chills ! He's very intense and enjoyable artist. You can tell he really loves and feels his music. I can't compliment him enough....He was really down to earth. We drove down from WV on the day of the show and got there a bit late, but they were just beginning....it was raining and not many showed up, he had everyone move up as close as they could. This was an amazing show with his strongest performance I have heard anywhere (see my video for a sample) He was very casual with crowd - open and interactive and even invited the crowd in the back to come down to the front. He recalled that this was the way it was in days gone by - orchestras were events held for the people and were very casual and full of energy between the perfromers and the crowd - this set the tone for the concert......simply incredibly show!!! Once in a lifetime!!!

The harrowing day began in Tampa as my daughter and I were bumped off three AirTran flights in a row! When we made it to Atlanta, it was 7:30 pm. Candace at Hertz gave us precise driving instructions to the Chastain Amphitheatre and we sped through downtown Atlanta like honking antelope! When we arrived at 8:15, I was deeply saddened when I heard music and thought that we had missed the opening song and then jumped for joy to learn that the music I heard was the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra alone. They were, in fact, their own opening act! Atlanta? Why did I think Serj was playing with the Auckland Symphony Orchestra? No matter! They sounded great, and ended their set strong. As we were escorted to our seats, I was struck by the simplicity of the Chastain. Completely outdoors, The Chastain was charming and the staff was genuinely courteous. This quaint amphitheatre seemed no match, however, for the gathering thunderheads! And sure enough, as Serj took the stage, the crowd erupted, and lightning spidered across the clouds above. I personally admire Serj's work because his feelings reflect mine as well, and his reading of Borders set this show off on the right path for a truly glorious night. Now, I have to admit, I was surprised at the sparcity of Tank-aholics. Once again, Serj shined. He beckoned to the loyal few, throw down your tickets and come forth. Symphonies were born to serve the people, he roared, eat and drink and be merry and fellowship with your general admission neighbor!! And with that, he himself erased the very borders of the Chastain! It was beautiful! A man that practices what he preaches!! Whether Floor or Box or Upper Level, all seats were equal. And the masses flocked with freedom to be closer to the Artist. My ten year old, however, was soon surrounded by towering fans. So, I invited her to try as many locations around the venue as she needed to find her new seat. The situation reminded me of Carlos Castaneda traversing Don Juan's porch. And from our new seats we laughed and danced and ate and listened to our favorite Messenger. And the atmosphere mellowed. The sprinkles of rain and cascades of lightning gave way after The Sky Is Over was played. The amphitheatre grew large and became the center of the universe. And the people cheered and shouted their affection for him. Serj has an amazing way of being comical, profound, charismatic, and professional all at the same time. Sometimes, he had to quiet the adoration, warning, you won't be able to hear these non-amplified instruments if you keep screaming so much. Which brings me to why I rate this show 4 stars and not 5. I felt the ASO was a little weak at times. They proved they could bring the thunder in the opening set, but seemed to be holding back a little during the main show. With that said, know that this show was the one to see if you are a fan. It was personal. It was inspiring. It was FUN!! Bravo Serj!!!
