Elvis Depressedly

ELVIS DEPRESSEDLY IN CONCERT:Indie quintet Elvis Depressedly create an intimate, confessional atmosphere at their live shows that heightens the emotional impact of their soul-searching rock. Frontman Mat Cothran invites ticket buyers into his world, spinning captivating tales of nostalgia and loss with his poetic lyrics. Backing vocalist Delaney Mills complements Cothran’s intense passion with her serene coos while enhancing the haunting mood of their songs with her eerie keyboard drones. Meanwhile the rest of the band contributes shuffling drums, melodic basslines, and ringing guitar chords that add a subtle sway to favorites like “Thou Shalt Not Murder”, “Come Clean Angel”, and “New Alhambra”.

First, let me express my love for The Masquerade. Next to the Tabernacle, it's my favorite Atlanta concert venue. I only wish it could've lived up to it's reputation for Mitski and her warmups. The interminable sound checks and monitor reassignment killed valuable show time...I wondered if these acts had any chance to sound check at all, or if the A1 just decided not to record his presets. Mitski spent a good twenty minutes of her set time testing, testing, testing, and still couldn't get what she and the band wanted in their monitors. A VERY poor showing for the Masquerade. The sound problems aside, Mitski live onstage is an astonishingly beautiful, cerebral, and visceral performance. Her voice hypnotizes, and the music crashes onto you unexpectedly. Elvis Depressedly.....eh. I wasn't impressed. Eskimeaux, however, was a nice surprise, a performance/experimental music act that I'd recommend for another listen. Foxwound, the very first act, was okay, but not memorable. Though I support local bands, I think that with all the audio trouble that night, it might've been wiser to keep these guys off the bill so the sound engineer could concentrate on the touring acts.
