First time to the Seban Theater, not a bad seat in the house, so don t feel compelled to purchase front row seats. We had Row 4, stage-left seating, perfect viewing but the house sound system is horrible. Don s voice sounded like it was a tin can, yet if I walked back to the center of the house on either side, perfect. I spoke with the Sound Board operator, he said there was nothing he could do. Now for the performance. Don was engaging but in my opinion, brought no real enthusiasm to his performance. 80% of his show was Country music, which I enjoyed, but not overly impressed. He only played a few of his hits, not even Castles in the Air. American Pie was done towards the end, but not an encore, in fact, there wasn t one. The house joined in with American Pie and that was fun watching folks older than me relive a period of time long ago. But there just wasn t anywhere near a fun, attempted knockout performance as I experience with other Classic Rock. Don wasn t bored, but he just didn t really try to deliver the goods. This was more like a Lounge Show. Could have been and should have been much better and very shallow on old hits. So expect to see Don as reinvented as simple old Country music and not the Classic Rock/Icon you probably expect to see.

Really fantastic venue St George Theatre on Staten Island and a fantastic show with Don Maclean and Firefall. Hearing Vincent and American Pie sang by the man himself will be a lifelong lasting memory

Really came across as 'makin a house payment' performance. Minimal energy, didn't play some great songs while playing cover tunes. It was my first time to see him and I wouldn't go back. Also, sound quality was marginal at best, audience interaction was almost non-existent.

Don McLean has stayed true to his beginnings. His non stop performance was a plus one does not expect with today's performers. His range of music surprised someone like myself who only knew his popular works and it was refreshing to see this side of him. His vocals are as good now as when he was younger but I found more compassion not just words. I purchased two of his albums and waited to have them signed. I thanked him for being a great American storyteller.

I was totally amazed by his performance. It was held in the small Bear Claw venue at Seneca Niagara with a very enthusiastic audience. If you get a chance see him you won't regret it. He sang old, new and unknown songs with great backup musicians.

The opening act was quite funny (Don't bring the kids) Don told us right up front to get comfortable because he was going to play for a while. And did he ever. Has to be the longest solo set I have ever been to. Pretty good for an old guy. I probably could have given it at least a 4, maybe a 5, if he would have left out the multiple occasions of taking God's name in vain. I actually don't remember him swearing very much at all, except for that, which does offend me. As always, the RoadHouse was great. Excellent food and every seat I have ever had has been within 25' of the stage and still easy to see the artists. The RoadHouse is my absolute favorite venue!

Don McLean wasn't real happy about the small venue and seemed a little bitter about touring?? His show was superb though. His band lost him several times, but all in all it was a great event that I'll never forget. Don is still as good as he was 30 years ago.

My girlfriend and I enjoyed her 60th birthday at the concert. We sat at the first seats after the stage and Don McLean was in our face all evening long ----- for a great performance. Don sang all my favorites along with a few I didn't even know he had written for other singers. I Really enjoyed his song about America and also General Dwight Eisenhower, very unusual for a performer to sing but he did a wonderful job. I will go see him in concert again whenever he is in the Pittsburgh area.

Don McLean is most famously recognized for this epic American Pie. But around 1972, when I first heard Vincent I was mesmerized by his poety (I was only 11). I remember seeing him many years later on TV with Garth Brooks doing American Pie and always thought that he would be one artist that I would like to see perform live, but I never thought that it would ever happen. I would have never expected that he would be playing in the amazing St. George theater just a few miles from my home in Staten Island. The very place where I first heard him on the radio some 45 years ago. Set lists favorites included Vincent, Winterwood and a rousing showstopper American Pie.

I was anticipating American Pie and Vincent and not much else. I could not have been more wrong. The entire show was great. Don s voice is clear powerful and flawless. The classics were classic of course. He was personable and told some stories from his life in a storied past. His new songs are keepers too. What an unexpected wonderful night. I never imagined that I would be singing American Pie with Don McLean...(and everyone else in the audience.). Thank you Don...it was a night I won t forget.

Don McLean is a classic. His voice has changed little over the years but his taste in music has expanded. He sang many of the songs we all came to hear and left us wanting more. He now plays more country styled music than folk, and I would have loved more stories about the songs themselves. He is incredibly humble about his work and not sure why some even made it as hits, but they are lasting anyway. He played for 1.5 hours and did not do an encore despite a cheering crowd - that was the only disappointment of the evening.

I heard Don McLean was coming to Phoenix on a local radio station. The 60 second add was his Greatest Hits, which interested me enough to pay $80.00 for a ticket. He played a lot of songs made famous by other musicians. Of course, he played music from his upcoming album, and 1 song that was his, American Pie. I guess I was expecting to hear his greatest hits. Why else would a 74 year old singer be on tour, if not to play the songs his fans expect to hear. I was very disappointed to pay that much for the tickets and hear 1 song that I knew. He has a long list of favorites. Castles In The Air, La La Love You, Vincent, Crossroads, And I Love You So and If We Try. None of which he played! Yes, disappointed!!!

Don McLean is very talented and has so many beautiful hit songs. Its a shame he didn't perform any of them except for American Pie. I paid to see this show to hear him play Vincent, Castles in the Air, and other greats but he never did. Not what I was expecting. He sang some covers of other artists songs instead, why? I know I wasn't the only disappointed fan out there that night.

Pros: 1. Hearing Don McLean play live. Cons: 1. Hearing Don McLean ruin "American Pie" by playing the chorus sixteen times in a row. 2. The security guard felt inclined to harass a group of elderly fans for having their cell phones out while my girlfriend and I were recording the entire show on our own devices. (Ageism is not cool) 3. The FOH and foldback did a terrible job of preparing for and mixing down the audio for the show. (I've listened to boom boxes playing from a garage that sounded better than this show did)

He seemed hostile and was there just to collect his money. He only sang American Pie and not his other two big hits, Vincent and And I love you so. What did he think we were all there to hear. His voice is still good and it would have been great to hear those songs as well as others. He hardly smiled or even made contact with the audience. it was a disappointment, which unfortunately I don't think matter to him. He sang for over an hour and never came out for a curtain call. If you corrected the terrible sound mix throughout, the strange song selection and the fact he looked like he wanted to be somewhere else playing a guitar that was consistently out of tune throughout the entire performance- and not just a little out of tune. I'd say the most shocking thing about last night's performance was he did a 15 minute rendition of an 8:30 song- American Pie- squeezing every bit of applause and a reprise (really- a reprise for American Pie?) he could and then- departed the stage. He didn't return for an encore. He didn't sing Vincent, which was a bigger international hit than American Pie was. And he left many people very disappointed. That's a shame. The people who came to hear that song left sad and dejected. My wife and I were just shaking our heads at the muddled sound and I was surprised by the obscure song selection throughout. Still- it wasn't terrible. It was a self-indulgent performance and a Vincent-Less concert where, had I not already known the words to many of the songs to begin with, I wouldn't have been able to understand a word. Even more odd- only a handful of original songs played and most of them only a fan would know The rest? Hank Williams, Buddy Holly, Don Williams even Da King. Very strange And- in the middle- a long and (again) self-indulgent story about how Drake ripped off a lyric McL had written from 1977 (which is true, Drake did rip it off) and how McL profited mightily from that settlement. Really Don? You are hardly the first. Gordon Lightfoot (The Greatest Love of All/ If You Could Read My Mind) comes to mind and Lightfoot never crowed on stage about his settlement. And telling us all that the true meaning of American Pie meant "I never have to work again" was amateur. ...Grow up, cowboy. So, after 15 minutes (not exaggerating) of American Pie (with an instrumental.....American Pie needs an instrumental?. I think he forgot the last verse and band filled in for him. Can't prove that thought) he departed the stage with the crowd shouting VIN-CENT, VIN-CENT, VIN-CENT to no avail. Don, channeling Elvis from a previous song of Da King's he performed, pulled an "Elvis". McLean had left the building.

Opening act was enjoyable - guy with guitar, nicely done. The Don McLean show is harder to comment on. The band was tight; sound might have been a tad loud but the vocals were clear. McLean's voice is still pretty darned good and he did pretty much everything you'd expect to hear. I guess the best description was that the show seemed old and a bit tired. Everyone did their bits but there didn't seem to be any energy or excitement from the stage. Perhaps the (very) sparse crowd factored into the lack of enthusiasm from the stage - however, we all did pay and I think we could and should have gotten a better show.

This show was way less than I expected. Mostly boring guitar play and song lyrics. The highlight of the show was American Pie. Don McLean brought the audience to its feat with this song, but only after about an hour or more of mostly boring material. Other than this iconic song, the concert was pretty sad and boring. The best part of the evening was our pre-dinner at the Irish Pub Biddy O'Malley's just next door to the Bergen Arts Center.

I am very sorry to give what is going to be a rather negative review. Don McLean was personable and sang many good songs. Unfortunately, either the sound equipment was poor or the acoustics in the theater were very bad. The lyrics were not understandable when his back-up band was performing. The best part of the show was the acoustic section when Mr. McLean sat down and accompanied himself on his guitar. Also, most of the music was too loud for comfort, and again, let me say that you could not understand the lyrics of the songs.

I love McClean for his American Pie album. It makes my desert island list. It was the first album I ever bought back when I was 9 or so. Don only played 3 tracks from that album, though. American Pie, of course, plus Vincent and Crossroads. That was ok, because the other tunes he played were great. He surprised me by playing a lot of western or country or hobo tunes. He did "Don't give a damn about a green backed dollar" and a Johnny Cash tune. I also liked "But oh, God how I worked my youth away." His voice still has plenty of power, but he occasionally lost the pitch at the end of a long-held note. That was the only minor flaw in an otherwise awesome performance. Few could do what he still does at 71! His guitar playing was still flawless. He was joined on stage by two lead electric guitars, a base guitar, drummer, and keyboard. All great musicians. All old guys who could really rock. The audience at the Skagit were almost all over 50, but stood up to belt out American Pie. As I said, I am a huge fan of McCleans. If you are, too, or if you like hobo or western music, you would love this show! Might be your last chance to see him.

It's a great experience to hear and see in person the songs and singer I've been listening to since I was in grade school. The vocals may not be as great, but hey, he's 71. Although he did not perform the more popular songs I am more familiar with it was still a wonderful night for nostalgia. As for Saban Theater, I like the fact that it is a small place. It makes the event more personal.

With beautiful, moving songwriting becoming a lost art, Don McLean remains true to his roots and continues to tell our human story. Don McLean is one of my favorite song writers and singers. He has to some degree lost his voice but he is still a showman and worth seeing. His band is excellent and fun to listen to. I thought the best number they did was the blues song. My main criticism goes to the planners of the event. All attendees of the show went through the same gate and had to show their ticket. Once in the venue everyone had access to any area (gold zone, silver zone, and general admission zone). Once the event started general admission and silver zone ticket holders were free to take gold zone seats or stand along side the gold zone seats. The next time I go to one of these events I will probably get general admission tickets and see if I can take a premium seat that is not being used.

Judy Collins opened. Her voice is just amazing. She also captivated us with stories from her career, laced with bits of humor, and life experiences. I will not soon forget her performance. I went (single ticket, a great experience), looking forward to seeing McLean. Judy Collins alone would have been well worth the price of admission. Don McLean: I went with the expectation that I would get to hear "Vincent", one of my very favorite ballads. And, of course, American Pie. I, and the rest of the audience got to hear so much more! Don's repertoire is too much for one concert, but what we did get was almost 2 full hours of great music. Some of McLeans work transcends "country", and the mix he put together was well organized, and displayed his considerable talents. As much a fan as I am, I was nonetheless very happily surprised by the range, and quality of his singing. I would go again tomorrow, and more times thereafter. I go to a lot of concerts, and this one is near the top. GO SEE THEM! You won't be disappointed. Promise.

Don McLean & his GREAT backup band from Nashville gave a terrific crowd-pleasing performance last Friday night at the Bergen PAC. While his voice sounded a little rusty at the beginning, he truly warmed up as the night went on--- the more he sang, the more the audience loved him, & the more he gave back. He really appreciated the audience--- told us several times--- & rewarded us with a great, wide-ranging batch of songs. I felt like I was learning about music as much as enjoying it! He played Buddy Holly tunes, blues tunes, pop songs, rock songs, hits, unknown gems, sad folk songs---ran the gamut. Of course, he played many of his own hits--- including of course American Pie, with extended middle instrumental break (fantastic)--- for which he did NOT wait till the end of the set! Other hits included And I Love Her So,Vincent, Crying (the Roy Orbison tune), etc. He played my favorite McLean tune, Winterwood. While he did skip Castles In the Air, which was a disappointment to at least one person in my row, you couldn't complain. He played WITHOUT an opening act--- he said he was playing both halves of the show!--- from 8 AM until 10:30 PM, with only a short intermission. And he stayed afterwards to sign CDs. Hard to fault the show. Yes, his voice is not as great as it once was, but you cannot realistically expect his voice to not age since the 70's. He's been out there singing & playing for well over 40 years, & he is a treasure. I am so glad I got to see & hear him live with his great touring band. The Bergen PAC is a great venue too--- wonderful sound & just the right size.

This concert was scheduled to start at 8:00 and probably started closer to 8:15, but we didn't finish until 11:45. Three and a half hours of wonderful music making! As with several other concerts I've gone to with performers with some age on them, both started tentatively, but built into excellent performances. Judy Collins appeared with just herself and her piano player. The sound on the first couple songs was off and I could barely hear the piano. Both Sides Now didn't sound right, and the guitar and piano just didn't work together. I was concerned. But, then, after the first two songs, the sound men got their act together, and Judy's voice warmed up, and it was excellent. Judy wove in tales of her folk singer friends from the sixties, and she was particularly effective several times as she would burst into song,...a capella...and simply sound lovely. Later she sat at the piano and played a couple of her own songs particularly well. She finished with Send in the Clowns and a lovely rendition of Amazing Grace. Then, the question was, could Don McLean match her. Again, at first, I was a bit concerned. Don came out looking less than happy, with a constipated look on his face. But, not to worry, he also warmed up quickly and starting smiling and enjoying playing to his audience. Indeed, he had an excellent band behind him, with Tony on the piano and Vip on the guitar. Don did the Vincent, Castles in the Air, Homeless Brother, Empty Chairs (from the American Pie album, magnificent!), and And I Love You So. But he also did songs HE wanted to play. Don put in a plug for traditional Christmas songs and did an amazing version of "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day". He also did a surprising version of the old Nazareth hit "Love Hurts." Don told us how he is not a fan of the one chord songs of today. "That isn't music." And then he tore into some songs that he himself was a fan of. What was amazing was the quality of Don's voice. It was still rich and full. When he sits down and does VIncent, it is still every bit as rich and distinct as it was in 1970. And of course, he did top us all off with the rousing American Pie, where he had us all on our feet singing along. This crowd was mostly over 50, but Don picked out a few young kids and really seemed to appreciate that they were there. I'd recommend this show to anyone who is a fan of these two performers.

His performance was generated in part by what he said was the overwhelming reception he received from the audience. Don McLean's music is ageless and so perfectly suited to the intimate setting afforded by the Birchmere in Virginia. This was more than just another recital by a famous artist, this was truly living history; with American Pie formally acknowledged by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts as one of the top 5 songs of the 20th Century (for those interested the other four were: "Over the Rainbow" by Judy Garland, "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby, "This Land Is Your Land" by Woody Guthrie, "Respect" by Aretha Franklin). But McLean brought his full repetoire to life at this show, ending the night with Castles in the Air. His voice is as good as it ever was...I'd go back and see him again tonight if he was playing.

I have seen him three times. Like a bottle of Ripple '68, he improves with age. Seriously, this wonderful performer was the most generous performer for his audience I have ever witnessed. He gave unparalleled entertainment for over two hours. If he is 64 and still rockin' and playing the blues this hard, he will give joy for 35 more years. Yeah!

Don was cutting people up the whole night, even the venue, but he sounded pretty good and the band was incredible. When he played American Pie, people went wild and it was awesome. Worth going to hear and sing the song.

The band sucked. His voice was totally shot. The genius doing the lighting kept rotating 300 watt klieg lights into the audience that actually hurt my eyes. Don't need to keep going because its just more of the same.

Started on time and played for one and half hours. He sang some cover songs and many of his own. Music is a mixture of folk and country with mixed tempos.. He also related some interesting stories and the audience loved him. We left with a very up feeling.

Don McClean still has a good voice at age 72, and he pleased the crowd at the Saban Theater in West Los Angeles Saturday evening. His selection of songs was perhaps the only caveat, as he chose to play more hootenany type material and country songs than his more familiar pieces. Of course, he closed with "American Pie" and "Vincent", which brought the audience to their feet. He played for about an hour and a half, but I suspect the audience might have wanted more, both in time and in song selection, hence 4 rather than 5 stars.

I thought he was great, but I would say he only sold maybe 75 to 100 seats if lucky. We were right up front he was very entertaining, was worth the money.I purchased the tickets as part of a Christmas gift for my wife she loved the show. The band that oped for him was also great.I think they were called The Electric Frogs.Getting back to Don we heard some of his new stuff sounded great. His voice was great for a 72 year guy.

Great concert on the 59th anniversary of Buddy Holly's untimely death. Don McLean's voice is getting a little thin in the upper register, but he gets kudos for not having backup singers cover for him and for sticking with the original and not taking it down two octaves. He plays better than ever and his band is top notch. The concert was rocking and people were up and dancing. Everyone was singing along and no one wanted to stop, so Don just kept playing American Pie until people couldn't sing any more. He played a couple Buddy Holly songs so well, that Buddy himself would have been proud.

Empty show, weird venue set-up. TOTAL waste of money. Half the show was filled with Don talking and singing American Pie for 27 minutes straight. The entire show lasted >90 minutes.

We saw Don McLean in 2017 in Phoenix and were sorely disappointed. He thinks a lot of himself, and told the amusing story about, when asked the meaning of American Pie, he says it means he never has to work again. And it shows.

" A long, long time ago," the knowing pen of Don McLean penned and produced some of the most important songs ever written. His performance, after all this time has passed, was no less than superlatively pure, poignant and heart rending and a pleasure I will never forget.. Somehow, McLean has maintained his sweet smooth vocal quality and continues to demonstrate the musical prowess he has always possessed on stage. He effortlessly swept the entire audience back in time to the early 70's as naturally as a summer rain. To say the experience was utterly amazing and emotionally overwhelming would be understatements. "American Pie" is undoubtedly one of the most beautifully powerful monuments to American music ever written and is surely one of the most recognized songs on the planet. His words exemplify the vital role music plays in all our lives. Thank you Don! You are our American Treasure!

A great performance by one of America's greatest singer/song writers. We heard not only McLean's greatest hits but classic blues tunes and songs by Johnny Cash and other greats. Don McLean has been on my Bucket List for years.

Don put on a really great show. I was a bit disappointed on two things. First the person he had to open the show had a very bad annunciation problem couldn't understand her at all and she butchered a song by a well known artist. Don I feel shouldn't have changed the tempo of one of his biggest hits ever American Pie. He sang another all time favorite Castles in the Air and I was amazed that he still has the voice to sing this song so amazingly smooth and soft as he did when he was a young teenage broncing buck. Highly recommend his show. Good try Jenni Reid!

Fabulous. Wish it had been longer. He needed a bit of time to get in good voice, but it was well worth the wait. He had great rapport with both his audience and his band. His sidemen were amazing, in particular the keyboardist.

After a few disappointing concerts where the artists are apparently tired of playing their older material (Jackson Browne at the Kennedy Center and Bob Dylan at DAR) it was refreshing to attend a concert where the artist is still enthusiastic about performing classic hits, appreciates the audience and makes a genuine connection through their material, band and commentary. Yes, he did play material from his new album but not at the expense of his hits; to the other performers, PUBLISH your playlist for those like myself who have waited 30-40 years to hear the old stuff! Yes, I did enjoy Don's take on classic songs, his new material, accessibility after the show (he signed retail items at the Birchmere) and personal insights. He just hung out with us and played a lot of good stuff; yes, he can still sing at age 70. Great venue, great artist, highly recommended. This is the first (and maybe the only) review I've ever written - just thought you should know...

In New York on vacation and when we saw Don McLean playing BB Kings we thought we need to see him. Biggest disappointment of the week. We took a booth as there was 4 of us so paid a good few hundred dollars but it was the biggest waste of money of the week. We arrived a bit late due to the weather but couldn't believe it when he sang American pie which is traditionally his last song at 2105. He was due to start at 2000!! He then sang a couple of encores including Vincent and finally left the stage at 2120 so maximum he played for was 1 hour 20 if he actually came on stage when he was due to. About 3/4 of the way through the set as well he stopped and started in song 3 times as he forgot the lyrics. Overall not impressed and wished we hadn't seen him so he could've remained the legend that we thought he was.

At 69 Don McLean's voice is still clear as a bell and his showmanship is spot on..... Despite a good venue, his performance was poorly attended, but he was gracious and complimentary toward a too small audience. Put simply - great show ... You could have heard a pin drop when he sang Vincent (Starry Starry Night) and held us in the palm of his hand.... as for American Pie ? I didn't see ANYONE that wasn't singing along......

This was one of the worst shows that I have ever seen for the amount of money that I paid. Bonnie Raitt far exceeded my expectations, Don McClean needs to either retire or literally learn how to entertain people instead of stroking his own ego.
