Rock n Roll heart - hearing the album in it's entirety was like a homage to my youth. Highlights- Gloria, of course, but Kimberly and Free Money- yes, that's Patti. In 40 years of seeing the band this was the first time I heard "Dancing Barefoot", which was great. The best was yet to come- My Generation and Peole Have The Power. Patti's gutteral growl makes me want to pound my chest and join the revolution. Michael Stipes shimmy was great to see- seeing Patti glowing on stage while performing with her kids was nice to see. Screaming to the the generally over 40 audience that "We're not fucking dead yet" was a shot in the heart I was glad to take. God Bless Patti Smith

This was my first time seeing Patti's live show. From the time she walked on stage until she walked off, there was an unmistakable feeling that you were in the presence of a legend. Patti is high energy, amazing talent. A true poet and a TRUE original. She has no "formula" songs. She wrote the formula! It was wonderful, to see someone that was killing it back in the day and part of an evolution of raw, powerful, original music in clubs like CBGB's, yet maintains the same energy and freshness today. Her band also knocks it out of the park. She played about 2 hours, only leaving the stage for a 3 minute break (while her band still played) and a short break before encore! Couldn't have been better!

I had never seen Patti Smith before and didn't know what to expect. I consider her to be a legend and wanted to make sure I saw her while she is still performing. It was a great show with songs from several albums and periods of her work. The Bowery Ballroom is a great, quaint place to see a show, unless they oversell. Here it was appropriately sold out. Early on she seemed to be in a good, joking mood. She joked that this night (the first of three) is normally like a rehearsal and she didn't know why anyone showed up. Several times she would chat in-between songs, either telling a quick story or interacting with the audience. She even read a passage from her book which led into a song. I am a fan of early Patti Smith and early on I wasn't sure she was going to provide the dark, brooding, punkish feel that I love. However, I was wrong, by the end of the show, the angst of her songs was palpable.

Since I'm 60-plus I was one of the lucky ones to see Patti Smith at the same Park West venue 30 + years ago. She's my age - 1946 vintage - and she can still rock! Before the show started I sat w/my wife and listed the 10 songs I hoped she would play and she hit 8 of them and played 8 more others; who could be displeased? I missed the keyboards, but w/Lenny Kaye and Jay Dee Daugherty still aboard there was no loss of any musical excitement. But Patti is still the show, part chanteuse, part priestess, fully poet, and totally rock star. She bobbed and weaved and slinked and floated across the stage, leading us all in the some of the anthems we have never forgotten, and still draw meaning and inspiration from if we value our sanity. It's always thought to be corny to think that secular entertainment can give us a spiritual jolt, but Patti Smith has been a beacon of real connection to the quasi-divine in the physical world, never fearing to be blessed.

We have been to see Patti on NYE many times at this venue - the venue is not one of the best (crummy security, not so great sound) but this night was esp. poor - nobody quieted disruptive audience members. Opening band was beyond awful - sleep inducing, cringeworthy and hardly a warm-up for an artist of this caliber. The band was not having one of their best nights - we have seen this artist enough times to know when she is 'phoning it in' and this was one of those shows. The midnight countdown did not happen on time - a little unnerving on New Years Eve! Also, in the past, there was free champagne toast offered - no such thing this time around. The venue should have worked more on the timing of the celebration. We will not be attending this event again.

I love Patti Smith. She embodies the rock n roll and the rock n roll politic. Perhaps she was still feeling the effects of a 'bug' she had caught. She said she usually comes down with something near her birthday. The show I saw was the December 29th performance; one day before her birthday. In my opinion the show did not catch fire and reach those dizzying heights that I know she can capture. Her choice of covers at first was brilliant. George Harrison's 'Within You Without You' from Sgt. Peppers. Man that was truly great except that she went up on the lyric at one point. The she did Michael Jackson's 'Billie Jean.' OK. A tribute. The worst choice of the evening for me and my son was the closer, the last encore, The O'Jays' 'Love Train. "What," we said in unison. "How can this be?" This song did not light the fire in our hearts that we were so looking forward to. No 'Gloria,' no Rock n Roll Ni**er...# It seemed she was holding back somehow. Perhaps measuring herself knowing she had two more big shows coming right up. I don't know exactly but something. And maybe this is nit picking but she was also selling her latest book. I mean it's cool for artists to promote their stuff but I thought once would have been enough. I am still thrilled to have seen her perform because I can see that she has the rock n roll magic inside of her. Unfortunately it did not totally appear on the night I saw her. #(the ticketmaster site made me edit the 'N' word)

Patti was amazing last night, as was her whole band. They paid tribute to several friends lost this year, Patti read some excerpts from her new book about her friendship with Robert Mapplethorpe, and of course a great blend of past music, some newer stuff and some rocking covers. She shines with such energy and beauty, just a gorgeous, brilliant light. Hope she is still rocking the Bowery Ballroom for many years to come :) It was a priviledge to share her birthday with her.

I've been watching this Band perform sice 1975 and am an avid fan. Patti is at her very best doing hard driving Rock and Roll. Her cover album "Twelve" was a big hit becasue it gave her new opportunities to sing powerful Rock anthems. That said, it would be nice to see her cut some of the slower ballads in exchange for some new songs reminicent of the sexy, charismatic hits of the past. The old girl has still got it in her and deserves some new material to show off her voice which seems to be, even though she claimed to have some throat problems, stronger than ever. John Cale did New Years Eve in 76 with her at the 2nd Ave Theater. It would be great to see some of those "Friends" like him again. As always her poetry gives us inspiration to carry on.

Going into the show, I was not a big Patti Smith fan - I didn't NOT like her, but I didn't know enough about her to really have an opinion - I was just going on a friend's recommendation. I will continue to go see her every December at the Bowery for as long as she continues to play! She is sweet and warm and charming, delightfully unpretentious, and wonderfully talented. Her voice is as powerful as it ever was, and her band is great.

The show started late (at 10 pm rather than 8 pm after a one piece 'opening band' which could have been Patti's kids for all I know, which would explain the disconnect between their act and the following concert (no intro to the opening act or after their one piece act'. But Patti Smith and her band did not disappoint. While the 3-in-a-row concert series of Patti Smith is apparently an annual event familiar to many of the folks present, I was puzzled at first about the audience being so patient and understanding, until I realized the concert was meant to start late to end right around midnight - so we could sing "Happy Birthday" to her (today is her 63rd birthday). You will enjoy the her show, but don't bother coming early! Bring along some humor -Patti talks quite a bit about her new book (she got her first copy right before the show), but once she sings her singing is as crisp and engaged and her band is creating a great rock' n roll sound that you cannot help but dance along, and if you close your eyes you can imagine that this is the 70's all over again - this is how her music must have sounded live then !

Patti describes the first night of her three show News Years event at The Bowery as the dregs evening. December 30th is her birthday and then comes New Years Eve. If this was the dregs, than the next two evenings will be amazing. Her own songs were sung with conviction and ferocity. She covered Harrison's Within You, Without You and Michael Jackson's Billie Jean. There were mistakes made and some hesitation with lyrics but these were great fun to hear. Patti also read from her new book, "Just Kids", as she had just gotten a copy from the publisher. Her happiness was infectious. Her enthusiasm for life and her wish to all for a wonderful new year made this a special evening.

I have seen Patti Smith, over the years, 5 times. I saw her original "Horses" performance at CBGB's.I have read her poetry and listened to her reading of "Just Kids". Obviously I'm a fan. Yet to see her on stage again, now in her 70's, with all the energy and startling strong voice was just the first "Ah" moment. The night kept these moments coming. The show was so amazing that I felt I had never seen anything like it. She's called now "The Grandmother of Punk". This concert made me realize she's also "The "Grandmother of Rap". My heart soared like an eagle for two hours. This concert will forever be filled in my memory.

Patti Smith and her Band put on such a great show. It's them and the music. No dancers, no light shows, no video. She'll be 69 in December and is still as energetic and outspoken as she was at 29. Patti Smith gives a great show no matter her age, and I have been going to see her since I was 19 -- I am now 57! The crowd was adoring and attentive. It was nice to see fewer cameras than at other concerts -- probably due to a more mature crowd. Although it was nice to have somewhere to perch occasionally, the seats were more trouble than they were worth. I felt very confined. It was difficult to get in and out of the seats, so we stayed put for the most part. There was no way to stay seated during the performance due to the people standing in the aisles, blocking the view of the stage completely. I wouldn't mind if the ushers let people stand right next to the stage, but not in the aisles. The sound was not great, the singer's voice was overshadowed by the guitars stage right.

Patii was phenomenal! She was lovely and kind, thrilling and entertaining. After about two songs in she encouraged people to get closer to the stage. Patti's voice and energy were top notch. She answered many of the audience's questions & statements & Made sure to call out the rude people who were talking during a cover she was trying to do justice. She also invited a ~very lucky~ audience member on stage to play her guitar!! Patti sat next to us, crawling back and forth from one end of the stage to the other and watched her band play. It was fantastic. And during rock n roll n***er everyone put their hands up. Patti and her band put on a fantastic show.

This is probably one of the most beautiful venues in downtown Los Angeles. The refurbishment was smart and stylish. Seats are well spaced and it'd be hard to get a really bad seat in the house. Stage is nice and large with great lighting. The only downside is the parking (it is a bit complicated and somewhat expensive depending upon where you go and not at all friendly for handicap access). Patti Smith sounds just as good as any twenty year old hitting the charts today. She is a wise woman with a big open heart and she knows how to give and then gives a little bit more. It was a treat beyond all treats.

MONDORAM23
Any evening with Patti Smith and Her Band is memorable and spontaneous,Tuesday December 28, 2009 was no exception to this template. The annual shows at The Bowery Ballroom are a celebration of not only her birthday (November 29), they also are a timecheck of Patti's take on current events worldly and universally. First and foremost, one must remember that these shows have become relatively a family and friends event and the intimacy of the venue makes the audience attached to what occurs on stage interactive theater. Patti, with one of her signature sock hats strategically placed, surprised everyone early in the evening by appearing on stage with original Patti Smith Group bandmate Lenny Kaye proudly displaying a first edition of JUST KIDS which is her forthcoming book paying tribute to great friend and amour Robert Mapplethorpe. The book, like everything Patti is part of, is part autobiography, biography, and, more importantly, a picture of New York from artistically revolutionary nexus of the late Sixties thru the Seventies and Eighties. The duo played a touching acoustic "Ask The Angels" in tribute to her fallen friend who past away from AIDS in 1989. Leaving the stage, Patti introduced "the opening act" which turned to be a segment of predominant instrumental sounds featuring Patti's daughter Jesse on keyboards and a young (never properly introduced) bearded young man playing the vibes. Obviously, thoughts of the Dalai Lama were the theme mixed in with some progressive rock lyrics paying homage to the likes of King Crimson. After a brief intermission, Patti and the current edition of the band (Lenny Kaye/guitar/bass, Tony Shanahan/bass/keyboards, Jay Dee Daughtery/drums/precussion, Jack Petruzzelli/guitar/keyboards) strode onto the stage and rocked the room with an emotional verson of "Privilege" culled from the EASTER collection of 1978. Patti then changed gears and once again sang the elegaic "Mother Rose" in honor of her late mom (Beverly). Patti's parents were always supportive in attending most shows in the New York/New Jersy/Pennsylvania area during their lives and are spiritually in the crowd at all of her shows. The show then interspersed nuggets including cover versions of George Harrison ("Within You, Without You"), a surprise a very tight "Billie Jean" spotlighting Shanahan(Michael Jackson), an homage to the great Jim Carroll ("Still Life) with Lenny Kaye in lead, Neil Young's "Powderfinger" featuring awesome guitar virtuosity by Petruzzelli, and a show-ending version of the Motown classic "Love Train". The belly-button and pinnacle of the set was undoubtably a tumultuously poignant performance of "Birdland" which certainly had the ghosts of John Coltrane and Charlie Parker smiling in the heavens as well as William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg. In keeping with the theme of family, Patti also paid tribute to her late husband Fred "Sonic" Smith by singing "Frederick" from the very under-rated WAVE album of 1979. After reading another passage from JUST KIDS, Patti energized the crowd prior to encores with a rockin' "Because The Night" telling her audience prior ot the song that when hearing the song for the first time on radio with Mapplethorpe by her side Robert had very sarcastically commented to her "that he was jealous because she got famous first." The gig ended with a grooving O'Jays/Detroit driven "Love Train" after performing RADIO ETHIOPIA'S chestnut, "Pissing In the River." All in all, perhaps Patti was a little troubled (and rightly so) by some annoying "amateur documentarians" (myself included) and unlike a couple (one in particular) annoying stage-elbowers with digital cameras this scribe dutifully pocketed my outdated Canon when given the scold and Patti admitted her annual birthday-coincidental head cold was obvious and troubled her...yet, nevertheless, a troubled and under-the-weather Patti Smith show is still a gem in this era of recycled oldies shows and endless parades of the "next big thing" "American Idolesque" shams. Thanks Patti for making that New Year's 2010 Blue Moon something to remember!

In this day of hype and vaunted social media where everything is "Awesome!" it's a privilege to see a dyed-in-the-wool, living breathing, rock, punk, poetess, rebel, matron, sister, goddess, bruja on stage. Patti is one of those people who when she mention's Lou Reed, Bob Dylan or Jim Morrison it's not to name drop, it's because her talent, credibility and reach has consistently put her elbow to elbow with the great artists of her times. She shares those copious talents with ease and verve. Her self effacing human stories and mic banter are the real deal (how many women would talk about their Frida Khalo mustache and billy goat chin hair?) . Her politics and humanity complement the music. At 70, she's as bad-ass as they come, her voice is strong and the resonant sound that made Horses and other landmark albums is intact. See her without an iPhone, experience it in real time and allow it to become an undocumented resonating memory of your own life experience.

Patti thought she was off. The crowd certainly didn't think so. The performance of Horses was a true treat whether through the songs that she sang or the words that she spoke in between the songs. She is still spunky at 70-full of energy and life. The punk within her certainly was evident in her encore as she performed My Generation. Her bashing of Trump was expected but necessary. A show of hers wouldn't be the same without some political statement. She was great and her band was wounderful. The sound was phenomenal in the cramped setting of the beautiful Carnegie Music Hall.

I have never seen Patti Smith, but admired her work very much since college. Finally the stars aligned and she came to Pittsburgh and I was in town and free that evening. She didn't disappoint. The whole experience was uplifting. She is very interactive with the crowd and they, in turn, fed the entire energy of the concert. A night I won't forget.

Patti knew what she came to do. She and her band performed Horses from front to back and then threw in some extras afterwards. She's a powerful woman that can hold the whole room with a brief moment or slight of word

From her defiant spitting on the stage to her heckling of that guy in her face taking photographs (woven expertly into her song, I might add) to her profanity laced raid on the Boomer generation that created (her word: begot) Donald Trump. Not to mention that at 70 years old her music and voice are still relevant.

Fantastic performance of the Horses album. Great band which included her original guitarist. Had not seen her since she did some songs on the REM tour. Don't miss her. Venue sound was excellent. According to my seat mate, a multi year fan, the sound was better in the Milwaukee Theater than the night before in Minneapolis.

First time that I had a chance to see Patti Smith. Put on a great show, amazing energy for being 70 years old. Songs sounded just like they did on the albums. Very passionate show and you could tell that her heart is in the songs that she performed.

Poetry intertwined with music, explains it best to me. At the age of 70, Patti Smith still has the voice and spirit of her young self. The music was written years ago but many of the songs tell the story of what is exactly happening in the country today. I recommend seeing Patti and her Band if she is performing in your area.. You won't be disappointed.

Time has passed and so has so many wonderful artists. Those who purchased and listened to Patti's, "Horses" Live at Electricland Studios LP released in 2016 already know the power of her voice and commitment to her fans has only gotten stronger and wiser with age. Still spitting the stage, but cleaning up after herself, Patti was the lightening rod and all that were in attendance were drawn to her stellar performance of "Horses", performed in it's entirety, plus other favorites. Lenny Kay's guitar was the perfect and welcoming familiar backdrop to Patti's lyrics and performance. "Birdland" was particularly moving as Patti appears to be reading the lyrics of sheets of paper. "Free Money" was also a standout in an evening that was hard to say any one song was better than the other. "Elegie" only becomes sadder each year with the passing of so many talented artists, but is also such a beautiful way to celebrate and remember those artists. The young lady sitting next to me said, as the audience stood to show their love and apprecitation for the artist many simply call Patti, "she commands an audience like no one I've ever seen." Amen.

Readings, Poetry, Music, Cussing, Spitting and Joking, it was Patti doing it all. She and her long time mates are the best. Wife and I along with the rest of the crowd in this small room would have stayed all night if she wanted us to. We never miss her shows anytime she's in the Los Angeles area.

inspiring, iconic, incredible - patti smith is all this and more. what strikes you at first is how amazing her voice is. her songs are classic yet current. warm and funny onstage, i totally understand how her son is just her little guy - i guess our sons and daughters will always be just that, no matter how old they are. it's hard to believe horses is 40. so happy to have been able to see it performed. the other songs on the setlist were great - "people have the power" is one of my favourite songs ever, and it had such a vibrant energy to it. could have listened to her for hours. it was a wonderful evening - thank you patti & band!

I wanted to see this show since Patti is a living legend and who knows when the next opportunity to see her live will come to fruition? She and her band performed Horses, and I was very happy that after the album was through, they went on to perform at least 8 more songs, with FLEA joining the band for the last 5 songs or so. I was moved to tears a few times, as the power of Patti Smith's poetry and presence is pretty intense and palpable. The sound was a little low. I was actually whispering to my husband, which is extremely rare at a concert. I would recommend the sound to be louder next time around....

Disappointed. Love Patti, but show was self-indulgent. And didn't appreciate snarky comment about Long Island. Don't play there in your Japanese socks and take their $ if they don't live up to your Bohemian standards. Figure out what your current message is and live by it.

Seen her so many times its like visiting with family, and that's great. And, her energy continues to inspire. But ... this time.... she did too much from her current album, which is far from her best. So, at times the set was bland. And, totally didn't need the Riahhna cover or the Michael Stipe cameo with the birthday cake (yawn.. stay home Michael). But, hearing Pissing in the River, hearing her between-song banter, and the Lou Reed Heroin cover made it all worthwhile.

I've seen Patti many times, beginning in 1975, and this was the most disappointing of all the shows. Overall, it was a lackluster show - it kind of rambled, she seemed preoccupied and the set list didn't include any of her high energy classics until the very end (People Have the Power). There was way to much patter coming from Patti and some of the so-called fans interrupted her all night. I think they were restless as well. There were a few gems, including a sweet rendition of John Lennon's "Beautiful Boy."

Patti Smith is still able to inspire after decades of writing songs, poetry and performing. On this night, the best show this new venue has hosted yet, Patti performed her classics along with covers of John Lennon and Lou Reed songs done in tribute to her new grandson and the late Lou Reed himself. At age 67 both Patti and Lenny Kaye are in top form proving that age really is just a number.

I have to say that I'm not a huge Patti Smith fan but my husband is and so we went. To my surprise Patti was quite funny and very entertaining. I was able to sing along with the few songs I knew but I also enjoyed the ones I didn't. It was the first time we were at The Space at Westbury and I thought it was a great place to see a show, nice atmosphere.

Patty opened up with Dancing Barefoot one of my favorites and played her bigger hits Because the night and People have the Power. Her voice was very strong and clear. The band was tight and it was a special evening having Lenny play with the band. It was my first time to The Space and it was a pleasure, the sound was great décor excellent and even as a GA I found a place to be comfortable. Great Evening

Just adorable. Tthe last time I saw her was at My Father's Place in Roslyn probably in 1977. She certainly has mellowed over the years but she still has the old Patti in her. She put on a great show with her band, she rocked the house. Singing, dancing, playing her guitar and talking to the audience. Happy Birthday Patti!

Patti Smith was awesome! She opened with Dancing Barefoot, which set us up to be continuously pleased. Most songs were from her latest album, Banga. It was wonderful to listen to her stories and tributes to some late greats. She was gracious and rough. Still rocks hard when it's called for and is of course, the oppitomy of cool!
