Venue did a terrible job setting up the sound system for the opening act, River Whyless. Much better for SCR. Sight lines from our seats were poor as was the directionality of the sound system.

The Steep Canyon Rangers are absolutely superb and entertaining musicians. What a treat! Seating at the Snoqualmie Casino Ballroom was excellent. My only beefs are with an uneven sound system and the plumes of cigarette smoke that waft in from the adjacent casino floor. Ugggh!

I didn't know what to expect when I bought tix for us but we couldn't have have a better time!....These guys are talented and funny, but the music is bluegrass at its best. The audience whistled, stomped and if there had been enough room I think everyone there would have gotten up and danced...SCR played some ole time favorites, but the music they wrote and played was just as good and even better. Buy ticket...take friends...sit back and hold on. These guys do not disappoint in anyway shape or form.....

The band was cohesive and showcased each other's musicianship to the max. We didn't want the evening to end... could have sat there infinitely just listening and tapping our feet. The acoustics in the Snoqualmie Ballroom were great -- which added to making it a perfect evening.

The Steep Canyon Rangers are extremely talented song writers and musicians. Very entertaining. I'm not a huge bluegrass fan, but I love seeing these guys play. Awesome harmonies, banjo, mandolin, bass, guitar and fiddle. I've seen them twice, once with Steve Martin and once all on their own. Both times I've left the show smiling.

Bottom line -- it was a great show! But there has been a big change in the overall sound of the band, mostly because of the addition of a full drum set, instead of the box drum Mike Ashworth used from the first time I saw SCR several years ago. The change in the sound isn't bad, it's just different, and louder; more rock-like than they had sounded. They played lots of songs off the new album and that was great and it was obvious to us and to people around us that they had SUCH a great time onstage. It was wonderful hearing their older songs, too. They sounded different with the addition of the drums, too. Overall, it was a great show, but I'm going to have to adjust to the new sound. I love this band, and am looking forward to seeing them w/ Steve Martin and Martin Short in a few weeks. Walker Theater is a nice venue; small, intimate; good sound and nice staff.

The theatre has good acoustics, but the seating is not very comfortable. There is no leg room and this becomes quite uncomfortable even for a great performance. So the "venue" does not get a great review. However, the performers, Steep Canyon Rangers, are incredibly talented. They are "one" with their instruments. The time goes by so fast because they are so entertaining. Their performances get better and better.

The evening was one of different styles of bluegrass music. River Whyless opened for SCR and they were adequate. SCR then took the stage with members of the Asheville Symphony and they were terrific. I have never seen a musical group that plays long uninterrupted set of several songs with only minimal amount of "chit chat." The members of the band are extremely animated and seem to be thrilled to be performing for their audience. All in all the evening was stupendous.

The show Saturday night in Asheville was amazing. The jamming that Steep Canyon Rangers did kept me bouncing and in wonder. However it was River Whyless that I came to see. I just wish they had gotten to play longer. Their brand of alt music is inspiring. To match them with a great bluegrass standard band was a nice touch because River is so good at doing their own thing. Watching what Halli can do with the violin/fiddle is mesmerizing, and her movement on stage keeps the energy up. I especially like when she plays the violin/fiddle like a guitar. The whole band with their voices blending and unofficial instruments makes them just a fun experience to watch.

Bought these tix months ago for wife's b'day. Opening act was very good, River Whyless. Rangers rocked the house, playing at least 2 hours. The only bad thing, there was an hvac vent blowing directly on us, and very powerful wind was freezing us. Other than that, for a venue that has been in business for decades, experience was great!

The band was tight, the live music much better than their studio recordings. I like their brand of 'bluegrass', using percussion. Members of the Asheville Symphony were a nice touch, although I never did hear any of their contribution. Maybe the sound system? I was sitting front and center behind the sound board. I will definitely see them again, preferably in a better venue. You could hear the HVAC system during quieter songs and it's just too big a venue for this band. Maybe the Thomas Wolfe auditorium?

We remember the Steep Canyon Rangers when we first saw them at Merlefest, perhaps it was 2005--an exciting young bluegrass group with energy and lots of good songs. Steve Martin found them and they had a exciting tour (which we saw) and a great CD came out of that. Now it's all different. It's mostly instrumental, of some Americana-type non-melodic, who knows what--lots of flashing lights, with Graham Sharp (banjo) and Mike Guggino (mandolin) prancing around the stage. Woody Platt, their erstwhile lead singer, is barely allowed to sing anything solo. Nicky Sanders is still doing his thing. But, kiss of death, they have added a drummer. So go see them is that is your cup of tea. Bluegrass it ain't.

The Steep Canyon Rangers are simply the best there is in bluegrass music. These two time Grammy Award winning artists put on a great show lasting close to two hours, including TWO encore number. Almost all of their songs have been written by members of the group, Each member in addition to vocals, is outstanding on their individiual instruments. Nicky Sanders on fiddle is as good as it gets and he always puts on a very energetic and entertaining performance. Each and ever performance of this group is always very entertaining! I am one of those fickle music listeners that listens to genres according to my mood. The opening group, Pack away handle was rowdy and got you moving. The Steep Canyon Rangers surpassed my expectations of the show.They each handled their instrument as if it was an extension of themselves. When you hear them all together, it is amazing. how else can i put it? the crowd is a bunch of aging zombies that barely clap. no dancing no cheering and no excitement. I have never experienced such a dead boring just sit there and listen kinda show. you want to see something fun go see yonder. last time i will pay to see rangers...besides they usually play for free in sevierville in the spring. Also i swear the TM site and my email reminder said "Doors 8PM" so like most shows i see there i head in about 8:45 and they were already done with the first set...lame... seems about 9:15 after their return and a couple of songs i head to the bar for my first beer and they were closing. citing that the schedule indicated that steep canyon bordom would be done by 9:45??? WOW

SCR is not your traditional bluegrass band. They have the classic harmony and play the traditional instruments but that's where it ends. Their harmony is terrific. Great performance, as usual, by SCR. The venue, however, is horrible. Sound system was bad (not too loud, just very poorly mixed). Loads of people (half of the concert attendees?) clogged the 25 or 30 feet between the seats and the stage, bobbing heads, a few were dancing, but many were talking loudly and paying no attention to the performance. On softer passages of the music, the loud talking made it impossible to hear the instruments and singing. BOTTOM LINE: I highly recommend the band, but hate this venue. I will never come to another show at this location

We are Steep Canyon Rangers fans, so we listen to their albums often. We love their albums' cuts, know the order of the songs in each album, etc. However, their concerts are always even more exciting because they extend those songs with their outstanding instrumentality: It is inspiring to see them receive their loudest and longest ovations because of their expertise on the mandolin, banjo, and of course Nickie on the fiddle. They also have begun debuting their new songs (to come out on a new album in August), and we enjoyed every new creation: They are complete bluegrass artists, as singers, performers, and songwriters.

We were introduced to Steep Canyon Rangers when they toured with Steve Martin. I think the performance last week was 10 times better. These gentlemen are extremely talented musically. I don't know why more people weren't at the show. I think they are more talented than Old Crow Medicine Show and I like Old Crow a lot. Both vocally and instrumentally, they are fabulous. I like their laid back performance and solid bluegrass music. They blended some of their older stuff with new to make an outstanding evening.

I saw Steep Canyon Ranger last year at Birchmere and have heard them at venues including the Stage and Wolftrap. This was by far their BEST performance! I traveled to Idaho to see them this time & must say it was worth the trip! They played their hearts out - love how they transition into different songs!! We had seen the Steep Canyon Rangers at the Birchmere before, but this was the first time they had an "opening act" -- Jonathan Byrd and the Pickup Cowboys. We thought Jonathan Byrd & Co. were fantastic and had a very unique style incorporating a musical saw to ethereal effect. Then the Rangers took the stage and entertained us with songs from their most recent album. They are such phenomenal musicians; it's so amazing to watch them play!

First time seeing Steep Canyon Rangers and really enjoyed them! Nice guys and fun to watch! Would see them again for sure! Bovine Social Club put on a great set. The two worked well together! Fun night and great venue at Bethel woods NY. Talented musicians all the way around ! Thanks SCR and BSC!

Thoroughly enjoyable! Put on a great show as they usually do! 2nd time I have seen them perform, planning on going to see them on stage with Steve Martin in Pa. That should be a unique! Their vocal harmony is so Right on! In my opinion, they are one of the best "Bluegrass" groups on the circuit.

Every one of the 5 musicians was outstanding. Their music was unbelievable. We loved the rich voice harmonies, the selection of songs, the acapela pieces, the fiddler who danced and sang with his amazing instrument, the banjo man whose fingers barely moved, but played rapid riffs. We were thrilled with this group and plan to buy CD's. Thanks, Bethel Woods, for making this great group available to us in Sullivan County.

I've seen a fair number of bluegrass shows, but the Steep Canyon Rangers was probably the most energetic and entertaining I've seen, especially of those with a more traditional sound. Despite the high energy, all of the musicians maintained tight coordination. The fiddle player, Nicky Sanders, was particularly talented and incredible. My girlfriend, who was with me and plays the violin, looked absolutely flabbergasted watching Nicky play. I highly recommend seeing these guys live.

I've seen a lot of blue grass bands, but there are no others like the Steep Canyon Rangers. They have broken the code on retaining their freshness and engaging stage presence despite many years performing together. I've seen them in both small and large venues and marvel at their ability to keep all of them intimate and personal. Followers are always rewarded with their standards, and routinely treated to new originals that we can't wait to get on CD and take home. This is no cover band, these are dyed-in-the-wool artists---each and every one of them. They have earned their Grammy Nominations and it is only a matter of time before the industry finally gives them their due with the award. The Birchmere is a fine venue, and there are no bad seats in the house, but I'd sit in an alley to listen to these guys.

These gentlemen are incredible. I've never seen such talented musicians work so hard to put on such a good show for their fans, and it was very appreciated. They dressed in suits - something that many musicians don't do currently, and it reminded me of watching the Beatles on the Johnny Carson show. I really enjoyed the general seating - we chose to sit in the balcony. I loved when they would feature the individual players during their solos with the lighting. Everyone is so talented, but Nicky Sanders is so enjoyable to watch perform in particular because of how animated he becomes.
