Patty and Lee Ann each have a gift. Yes, I use first names after an evening with them in what felt like their living room. Stripped of all back up save a lone guitarist (each bringing their own friend and awesome musican), Patty and Lee Ann let us into their world with a few personal stories and raw renditions of their best recordings that left me weak. This tour is highly recommended for anyone who can get there. I'd go again if it came back.

This was my first show at the beautiful Ryman Auditorium AND my first time seeing the lovely Patty Griffin live. I've loved Patty for years and she can do no wrong. I didn't know what to expect BUT I hoped for more stories and some of her classic songs. Her new stuff is great too, especially from her gospel album (wow!), but I wanted to sing along. Her friend Emmy Lou Harris surprised us for a song! Overall, I was absolutely pleased with my experience. Patty's voice is angelic.

I've seen Patty 3 or 4 times and love each experience. I would have given this 5 stars but I was really hoping for a few more of her more upbeat songs woven into the new ones. I loved the American Kid album, but no songs from that one. I'm learning to love Servant of Love and hearing it live did endear it to me. I think she may have been fighting off a cold as well. Her band was terrific and really seemed gelled even though they have only been on the road for a short time. Somerville theater is always a great venue! Opener Sam Lee was a real treasure!

The sound was so brassy and shrill up in the tiers, that we got our seats moved to the orchestra which was better, but there were still problems. The sound people didn't seem to have done their sound checks or understood the nature of Zellerbach. People around us were also complaining about the ear splitting sound issues. Patty had some moments of brilliance, and some moments of pitchiness. Still, the die hard fans seemed thrilled with it all.

Buddy started off the evening with his own set, invited Patty and the Band up for a kmajority of his songs, and then Patty came on with a set that included a lot of tunes from the new album Downtown Church, but she made sure to include some old favorites including Heavenly Day, Mary, a Waylon Jennings cover (I'm a Believer), and Up to the Mountain! Wonderful show, I can't wait to see her again!!

Patty's voice was in great form, and she had a nice full band. 2 guitars (including Buddy Miller), drums, standup bass, keyboards. They did Buddy Miller songs for the first section, then took an intermission before starting Patty's set. I knew Buddy Miller was a great guitarist but I didn't realize what a great voice he has. She did a lot of the gospel type music from her latest album, and it was a great show. I'd say it had its strong moments, but didn't really fully grab me as much as her previous concerts have. Maybe because we had less Patty Griffin songs and performances due to the fact that Buddy Miller songs were featured for the first 30-45 minutes. His songs and playing are great, but that combined with the featuring of all the new gospel type spirituals kind of took away from all the Patty Griffin classics we like hearing and that really build up a head of steam. Since she had an organist/pianist with her, she never sat down at the piano either, which is something I missed. Very good show though, overall.

My first time seeing Patty perform live, and I was amazed. Her voice is as wonderful, flexible, and piercing as on any CD I've listened to. Not a lot of her original material in this concert - she's touring with her new CD, which is mostly rootsy gospel standards a la The Staples and even a song by Darlene Love Coates of the Harmonettes. If you don't know what that means, don't let it throw you. She's astounding belting this stuff, and her band rocks with it. Lots of dynamics in this show. Terrific Nashville players backing her, and Buddy Miller was a surprise. Great voice, tasteful lead guitar licks and kind of a funny storyteller.

The concert started with Buddy Miller doing a set with Patty as his backup singer. Buddy rocked as always, and chatted between the songs. I thought the sound was way too loud for that set and was worried about Patty's set but it was adjusted properly. Patty had an awesome band (and Buddy was part of her back-up). She sang through most of her new album, but also did some old ones and some never recorded new stuff too that was so great we still wanted more after 2 hours of solid Patty! I really loved her acoustic set the best. "Coming Home To Me" has to be my favorite song!

For me, "Mary" and "Heavenly Day" were the highlights. She played 3 songs from previous albums. The rest was from Downtown Church. She sang the entire album, but one song. I understand album promotion (or maybe I don't). Had hoped for a little more from her earlier albums. Her voice is wonderful ... no complaints there. It's not often I get drowsy at a concert. I was pretty drowsy.

great opportunity to hear patty and buddy miller play together. while she calls herself a lapsed catholic at best, she clearly enjoys singing the selected gospel songs with a lot of spirit, and the rest of her band is excellent.

The show was awesome. The music was better than awesome. The venue leaves a lot to be desired. I will probably never attend another concert at the Crystal in Portland. All but about about 50 people have to stand for the entire show. I stood for as long as I could, until I was in so much pain I had to leave and go home. I knew what to expect having been to one other concert there, and I was willing to endure it to see Patty and Buddy because I'm a big fan. Never again. The sound was good, but I think the mixing could have been improved. Buddy's voice overpowered Patty's too much during the first set... their other lead guitarist's solo was screwed because of some kind of sound issue, and the bass was rather muddled. Plus the before concert and during the break music they put on was pretty bad.

While it is hard for me to stand in one spot for over 3 hours, I would gladly do it anytime if it meant I got to hear Patty Griffin, Buddy Miller and her band. Incredible voices, very tight backup band, all the songs from her best CD ever - Downtown Church.

Patty Griffin put on an excellent show. I enjoyed Buddy Miller also, but Patty reigned supreme. Excellent venue for promoting the songs on her new CD. Her voice was crystal clear, and anyone could see that she was having a blast up on the stage. She engaged the audience with both her rapport and her presence. I would return to see her any day any where!

This was the second time I'd seen her, with a ten year break in the middle. She was more incredible, totally seasoned pitch-perfect voice, and yet she did not seem at all like she was just going through the motions. She truly enjoys her time playing for the crowd and makes it a really poignant and wonderful experience for everyone. You'd be hard pressed to not drop a few tears and hug the person you came with at some point too. Wow. She is one of my favorites.

Patty is a pro and has such an amazing voice that it's hard not to be blow away with her performances. I didn't know the new stuff but it was very beautiful. My only regret is that she didn't play much of her old stuff, I've been a fan for many years so I really wanted to hear some more songs from her previous work.

Buddy produced Patty's latest effort, a gospel themed work that I can't wait to go and buy. Buddy was absolutely fantastic--what a guitar player! Loved his seasoned voice and humor. Patty was incredible as usual but what struck me was her natural ability to handle gospel songs, treating the genre with respectful enthusiasm and tender-heartedness. We saw her on Easter Sunday, so the music seemed fitting for the holiday but wasn't preachy. She mostly sang songs from the new album but also did "Mary" and an exquisite version of "Heavenly Day." The encore included "I Went Up To The Mountain" and was just amazing. A perfect way to celebrate the holiday, but the show is well worth every penny. Wouldn't have missed it for the world.

Great show by both Buddy and Patty. Having been a Buddy and Julie Miller fan for years would have like to hear Buddy solo a little more. Had never heard Patty in concert before. Patty Griffin keeps getting better and better. She covers several old or traditional gospel pieces in her powerful way. Her choice of having Buddy Miller open and join her made for one long, perfect set. Loved it. One of the best I have seen. Gotta get the CD.

Took my family to see the Buddy Miller/Patty Griffin show. The sound was amazing and the band was great. Very tight, minimalist playing without a lot of wasted notes or "overplaying" which is a sign of great musicianship. I was a little disappointed at Patty sitting in on all of Buddy's opening set since in my mind he was the headliner. (I became a fan the first time I heard "Universal House of Prayer" and only became more so when I heard "Written in Chalk") Though their voices blended well and Patty is amazing - I missed hearing Buddy's plaintive tenor flying solo on a few of his songs. Overall a great show - highly recommended - regularly attend shows all around town at big and small venues and the Pageant is by far my favorite. If Buddy had done a couple more songs and Patty had played another 20 minutes it would have been the show of the year... the craftsmanship was that good.

This was a great show - start to finish! I've never seen the first stop on a tour before, so it was fun to see them kinda getting used to one another - it almost felt like the audience was a part of their rehearsal process. I enjoyed hearing Buddy sing Mark Heard's "Worry Too Much" first, and I also thought the whole show (pre- & post-intermission) was positive & upbeat w/o being saccharine. Patty's gutsy, funny "I Smell a Rat" knocked all our socks off. The Pageant crew did a great job, too - kudos, all!

Highly recommended. It really doesn't get any better than Buddy and Patty. Both sounded great and the show was tremendous. In the age of America Idol it's great to see musicians with some depth and the only way to get that is putting in the time. Enough of the soapbox, if you're a fan of this music go support it. Worth every cent! (Great band also.)

I liked Buddy Miller! He was excellent. I have been a fan of Patty Griffin for years and Uptown Church is definitely my lease favorite album. I was happy to see her live, although I'm sure that this would have been my least favorite time to see her. I'm looking forward to seeing her on a different tour. Her voice is powerfully amazing. So much so that I enjoyed the concert even while I didn't care for most of the song choices.

Patty Griffin was great as always, however the House of Blues is not a great place to see her. The acoustics were muddy and boomy, it was hard to understand the lyrics and hard to hear Patty's guitar playing. To make matters worse, there was large AC duct blasting frigid air on the entire seated area on the floor. Everyone was complaining to ushers and management and they refused to do anything about it. People around us were extremely unhappy and cold and it seriously interfered with our enjoyment of the concert. It may be appropriate when you have a floor filled with dancing jumping bodies, but when you're sitting it's terribly uncomfortable and noisy. I would much rather see Patty play at the Orpheum or Berklee Performance Center. I was a little disappointed that Patty didn't do more songs from Silver Bell - she mainly played ones that are normally in her rotation but it would have been nice to hear some more obscure ones like Driving, Boston, One More Girl or Silver Bell. Her guitarist is great as is multi-instrumentalist John Deaderick. Patty's voice soared as always - she is so incredible! She played a couple new tunes that were very nice and it was fun to hear Truth #2 which I'd never seen her play before. She also played a number of wonderful tunes from American Kid. 5 stars for Patty, one star for HOB....

Patty Griffin and her stellar band performed for a loving audience of Angelenos here Tuesday night at the Wiltern. Opening with 'Ohio', the lead song on her new album 'American Kid' (dedicated to the memory of her father), a stunning rendition that gave me 'chills'. An extraordinarily gifted songwriter blessed with a singularly sublime voice, Patty both solo and with her fellow musicians displayed the full range of their talents. Folk, Rock, Gospel?...those genres don't adequately define the 'magic of the music' they performed on this special evening. In a surprising flurry of strings & strands of 'flaming red hair' Patty rocked incessantly on 'No Bad News' which she wrote during a period when she was disappointed in both men and her president. Another semi-solo gem on voice, guitar & accordion was the deceptively simple tune 'Be Careful' whose lyrics are food for thought and Patty at her best. After two encores, Patty & Company left us all wanting more as we shared the many song titles we would have liked her to perform. Her performances are all too rare in these parts and I will gladly travel north to Hardly, Strictly Bluegrass in SF this October, especially if Patty is there.

Ah! got my fix of LIVE Patty Griffin and it has been a while, unfortunately. Don't get me wrong, ... I LOVE the new album, but the set was very "new record laden" and I found myself waiting to hear some more of the older stuff. Patty has SO much of her 'own' songwriting but I found her covering so many other artists instead. Of course, she did a phenomenal job at it and I was dancing around at the end in the pit like everyone else. I was blown away with her vocal performance, but I kept wishing she'd sit down at the piano or be on stage 'alone' more. I love Buddy Miller and he really was awesome, (had never seen any of his shows), but I was there for Patty and her songwriting. I thought their little talk about World Vision charity was 'just right' in length and sincerity. I also thought the band was amazing. But again, I kept wishing Patty would sit down at the piano and touch that melancholy part of me with "Burgundy Shoes" or "Kite". When you are a long-time fan, I guess you are impossible to fully satisfy as she would have to give a 4 hour concert to hit all of the material craved (-; Overall, I loved seeing her LIVE as she is the primary influence for starting my own songwriting attempts. One negative note ... and it's not about Patty, but rather ... the Wiltern staff: Some woman SCREAMED at me aggressively when I tried to snap a photo on my way out. I was leaving the pit and had a great vantage point for a band shot. I had been taking cell phone photos the entire show without a flash, (many other folks had been too). So when I got screamed at ... I jumped a foot and zoomed out of there. I fully respect the band's wishes, however, I was unaware of those until I was scolded in public. The woman could have simply tapped me on the shoulder to stop me from taking the photo. It sent me out of there with a slightly negative feeling but that passed as I remembered all the of music with my friend. The other staff was great! I wish to end this review on a positive note. The venue is just beautiful! Patty Griffin is one of the best songwriters I've ever experienced. Her music is for the more sophisticated, active listener, rather than for the audience that just wants to tune out. Her vocals are sweet and powerful all at the same time. She is a first class act and she has teamed up with others of the same caliber. I will always be one of her biggest fans.

I am a Patty Griffin fan, and have never seen her in person, so I was excited about this concert and venue. I did not know much about Lee Ann Womack. First off, Lee Ann Womack was AMAZING. She has an incredible voice and she really engaged the crowd, She had fun stories and was just a pleasure to watch. I am now a new fan! Patty's guitarist was UNBELIEVABLE! He was SO talented and pretty much blew everyone away. Patty was also wonderful on instruments. The one thing that was lacking was Patty's vocal performance. She just didn't seem to be on her game. It was hard to understand her at times. And at the end of Lee Ann's performance, Patty and her guitarist joined them on stage. They sang one song together, that it was obvious that they had never practiced it together or that they even knew the song. Lee Ann at least looked like she was doing her part. Patty looked like she was ready to leave. At the end of that song they were walking off the stage, Lee Ann looked like she was ready to sing another song but Patty shook her head "no". It was awkward at best. It seemed like they had not ever rehearsed together. Seemed strange.

The venue for this concert was the Lyric Theater in Birmingham, AL. I have never been there before and it was amazing. The acoustics are good and there is not a bad seat in the house. Patty Griffin and Dave McClister are so much fun to watch. They both are very talented musicians, they seem to really enjoy playing together and the music was fabulous. Saw the very last show of this concert tour of this three amazing ladies. It was an evening of great performances with wonderful songs and excellent musicians. This was also the first time seeing a show at the Valley Performing Arts Center...the sound was amazing and the venue very comfortable, I hope more quality artists start booking into this place. Patty, Sara and Anais sang round robin style for the evening, Anais was having issues with her vocals since she was recovering from a virus but she pushed thru a couple of her songs but the other ladies and a good friend of hers took over most of the vocals. I look forward to hearing Anais in the future after she recovers from her throat infection. Over all it was a great evening full of good music by some very talented ladies.

Patty Griffin at the Uptown wasn't so much a Patty Griffin concert as it was an ensemble crusade for the League of Women Voters featuring Sara Watkins and Anais Mitchell. Which is so very righteous and fine. For me they were preaching to the choir. But it was so much more ensemble than Patty Griffin...so there was no Making Pies or Long Road Home or 1000 Kisses. Patty sang a powerful rendition of Truth #2. And the best takeaway was the discovery of two fantastic musicians: Sara Watkins and Anais Mitchell who gifted me with a couple of new favorite songs: Lock and Key and Why We Build the Wall. And as always...the Uptown is a total class act with a nice cafe for pre-concert dining and a wine bar for a sip to enjoy in seat during the concert...and a staff of ushers with flashlights and elbows at the ready to make sure everyone navigates their way safely into the balcony seats. Thumbs up!

My husband and I planned this trip to Napa for the usual reason, wine, relaxation, wine, good food, wine, new experiences. In planning, I looked for things to do that didn't involve wine or food and found this concert. My husband was familiar with Patty Griffin's music, but I was not. He enjoys live music so I thought this would be an incredible opportunity to hear good music in what I heard is a wonderful venue. We were blown away, it was not just good music, it was incredible harmonies, lyrics that rang true, and musicians that are not only incredibly talented but play from their souls. All four performers outdid themselves and we reaped the benefits. It was a wonderful night and I will certainly be on the the look-out for other performances and look forward to listening to their CDs in the cool summer nights of New Mexico.

It was a good show, the trading songs between the three performers was a bit discombobulating as I'd wanted to hear PG more. That and that I was sitting in direct line of the guitar player's monitor amp were the only negatives. That being said, I did really like the two other women playing their songs, especially, Anais Mitchell

Rarely have I been floored by attending a concert that exceeded my expectations by light years. The three women(Griffin/Mitchell/Wagner) blew us out of our seats. Patty orchestrated the venue and included the other two fabulous lady musicians to form a orchestra of folk heaven. The accompanying male guitarist was as talented as the women and he unassumingly brought together a myriad of songs highlighted his scope of talent. each performer was able to highlight their skills and then together they form a folk orchestra. Someone of the three alluded that Patti inspired the tour and her vision will hopefully spawn a CD or Vinyl. I have been in love with Anais for a period of tie, but her real live persona(cute/funny/gifted/spirited) definitely shined. The violinist(fiddle) was a rare treat, Patti blew the socks off of originality and the whole show balanced on the shoulders of the male leader.

Patty Griffin performed another great show. She is an incredible talent and great songwriter. Sara Watkins blew away the concert with her own writings and melted the strings on her fiddle. Patty's backup lead guitarist was over the top!! What a surprise having him in the mix!

My wife and I were disappointed with the show. Here were three talented performers who could have put on a great show but just mailed it in! They only sang about 5 songs each with 75 minutes of music total. The whole show was 90 minutes and included time about the League of Women Voters and other talking. They repeatedly said before a song that it was only the second time they did it so they hoped it would come out OK or some such phrasing. Sara Watkins had to stop in the middle of the best song she did all evening because she forgot the words, and it was a song she wrote. The whole performance was like a dress rehearsal. The song selection was also poor overall, chosen mostly as songs they had recently written instead of an orientation to the best songs that each had. Hopefully reviews like this will be a wake up call to these performers and they will adjust for future performances on this tour.

I have been a Patty fan for over 10 years. I jumped at the chance to see her in concert since she doesn't come to Florida often. After learning she would be singing "in the round" with Anais Mitchell and Sara Watkins I thought, "that could be interesting," as I knew Sara and Anais are both talented artists. Needless to say, I enjoyed the concert, however, it was more of a group of friends jamming together than anything else. Some parts of it felt slightly unrehearsed and Patty didn't sing any of her hits. I know that's not always the point of a concert, but I left feeling jipped. The concert was only 90 minutes.

The great - Patty, Sara Watkins, and Anais Mitchell all gave solid performances throughout the evening. Sara's voice and musicianship, Patty's eclectic songwriting, and Anais' modern sound were a great combination. The sound in the theater was excellent and the accompanying guitarist was highly skilled and most enjoyable. The disappointing - The concert was way too short! Usually songwriters in the round, especially major artists, perform at least an hour and a half to two hours or more. This show lasted maybe 1 hour- 15 minutes. Much of that time was spent talking to the crowd about the League of Women Voters. No problem with the importance of the topic, just thought the length of the concert was not worth the price of admission. This could/should have been a 5 star show.

It was a thrill watching such great artists at work. The vocals and instrumentation were awesome. Patty, Sara, and Anais were wonderful. And David's guitar was riviting. We liked the informality. It was like being at a jam session in their living room. All the artists got equal time. And the venue at the Florida theater was perfect. A step back in time. How wonderful this landmark has been saved and preserved. Good job folks. Two hours of non-stop music...a great way to spend an evening.

Patty Griffin along with Sara Watkins and Anais Mitchell provided a beautiful performance. The three rotated the lead during the entire performance giving each artist an equal share of the limelight. Very high quality. The only bad thing was the brevity. Including an opening introduction and very short speech by the League of Women Voters and a follow-up by Patty Griffin, the show was about 90 minutes (no break or intermission).

Way too short for the price of the tickets! Total time for all 3 artists was less than an hour and a half. They all have several records, so it's not like they didn't have the material.

These three strong women performers were terrific, especially Sara Watkins. However, they performed for only 75 minutes. I wish these performers had given a local female artist an opportunity to perform to showcase her talents.

I need to preface this review by stating that I am a huge Patty Griffin fan and have been for years. She is a gift to music lovers who like thoughtful moving songs sung by a woman with a larger than life voice. However, in this case, I was more enamored with the opening act named Darlingside. Perhaps I don't care for her latest set of songs from her new album which I was unfamiliar with. Sometimes it can take a while to "get" the music requiring repeated listenings. She played fewer hits and more new. I get it, but I was getting fidgety despite her passionate performance. That is the honest truth. Also her encore was some obscure song in Spanish that had many people scratching their heads. You should still see her no matter what but the first time I saw her, there were many more "catchy" songs to keep the audience energy up. The opening act, Darlingside, was an unknown band to me. They came out and from the opening chords of 4 person harmony, they blew the audience away ending in a standing ovation by the end of the set. I think people were truly surprised by their sound and musical chops onstage. This is the kind of band that should be heard live because the studio recordings do not pick up what they sounded like in Variety Playhouse in Atlanta. Just know that their stage performances are more lively than the clean recordings for sale. These guys are absolutely hilarious too telling funny stories in between songs.

i had been looking forward to this - been a long time since she has been to Atlanta. Sadly, it was a weak set, she sounded a bit sick and the sound itself was awful. So many of her classic songs that were surprisingly not included in the set. I get wanting to promote a new album but you have to have balance...esp when the new album sound seems so different (and IMO weaker) than previous offerings. So disappointed! And get a new sound mixer - the reverb was awful.

I've seen Patty several times in concert. I love her music and have been a fan for many years. I have her new CD and I enjoy it, but I was hopeful that we would be hearing more songs from past recordings (in particular--American Kid) and the focus was more on new than old. Any night spent at an Americana concert is a great night--I don't like to complain; voices/instruments sounded awesome, but unlike past Griffin shows, I left feeling like something was missing.

I'm a huge Patty Griffin fan, and I've seen her in concert probably 5 times now. I even stood in the cold and rain once to see her play. In no way have I ever been critical of her music or performances because I've never had anything to be critical about. But this last performance at the Ryman was just not good at all. She only played two songs that I recognized, and the rest were from her new album that's only been out for two weeks. There was a definite disconnect from the crowd, and it even seemed like Patty was disconnected from her own band. They didn't feel comfortable with the new music. That's how it came across to me. My wife felt the same way. We were really really disappointed. The whole performance felt very self-indulgent on Patty's part. You just can't do that to a crowd. You have to play songs they know. It's ok to throw in a new tune or two, but not an entire set of new music.

I attended this event upon the recommendation of some locals when I was visiting Nashville. The opening act was Darlingside which was a very pleasant experience. Patty came out with a flawless and fun performance. My face hurt from smiling throughout. As a bonus, Patty introduced an "old friend" to sing the last song with her and to everyone's delight, out walks Emmy Lou Harris. But even without t h e surprise guest, this show was exceptional and I would see it again anytime I am near one. Lovely

I was glad that I had listened to the new album a couple of times , but if you have a career in music you should know how to mix old with the new .this was the most disappointing show I have seen. Having been on the Cayamo Songwriters cruise with Patty I know what her older songs mean to her fans . So should she .

I can get loud, amped up music with indecipherable lyrics from a thousand no name bands. I can only get beautiful Patty Griffin acoustic from Patty Griffin...but not much at this show. Set list was disappointingly short (75 minutes including encore) and contained almost none of what has made her such a revered artist. Fine for her to want to play her new material, but I wish there had been more balance with what has endeared her to her fans for years. And the sound was awful, at least in the part of the theater where I sat. Her voice was over mic'd to the point where lyrics were indistinguishable for much of the set.

After listening to her new album a ton in anticipation of the concert, I was greatly rewarded by hearing her play the majority of it live. While my wife was slightly saddened that Ms. Griffin breezed past her older material, I was quite happy to hear her new songs brought to life and filled with meaning that I hadn't noticed in the recorded versions. A word must be said about the opening act, Darlingside, which was one of the best openers I've ever seen. They were worth the price of admission alone, and I've never seen an audience react to an opener as strongly. Well done, fellas.

Patty provided some poignant moments, but on the whole I was underwhelmed. There was way too much reverb on her voice, almost to the point of crowding out any hope for diction. Her band was tight and her guitar player was a great addition to her music. The theater had a leaky pipe or something, and during quiet songs one could hear water hitting metal. Very distracting. We complained but they never really addressed it.

Found the show to be more dull and 'laid back' than any of the dozen-plus shows of hers I have seen, not many of her 'classics' (Tony though was amazing, spellbinding with her alone on her piano) but all in all it was the least favorite Patty show I have ever seen since I first saw her on May 6, 1999 at Lupos with Lucinda WIlliams. I have been an avid fan since discovering her inadvertently that night. On the bright side the tickets were reasonable and the location was nice since it is located right off the T and its always nice to see her.

Patty Griffin Somerville Theater show was a true demonstration of her musical gift. Vocals were pitch perfect as usual. Featured most of her new album, Servant of Love and eclectic selections from Downtown Church, Silver Bell, American Kid. Did not play any of the signature songs like Heavenly Day, Nobody's Crying, Forgiveness, Not Alone, Mil Besos. Played a very fine stripped down piano version of Tony which was an interesting but well done choice.

Wonderful wonderful show with the incomparable Patty Griffin! She is warm, funny and beyond talented. (the opening act - Sam Lee - however, were pretty awful. Maybe 5 people in the audience were into his genre of music (essentially covers of british gypsey songs) - hate to say that but hey, that's 1 hour of my life i won't get back - just sayin')

I love Patty Griffin and her voice remains incredibly strong. That said, she pushed her new album which I am not crazy about and the only non-Servant of Love songs were from Downtown Church, her great gospel album. She has so many stunning songs that either make me smile or make me cry and she didn't play any of them. Oh well.

Patty really gave an all out performance at the Birchmere! Too many moments to pick just one. Her rendition of " Tony" played with just the piano and slowed down to half the normal pace was just beautiful. The songs from her new album. I'm a HUGE fan of Patty Griffin, and although she had stellar musicians to accompany her, she seemed "off" in her performance and the sound mix was terrible. The instruments were all too loud, especially the piano, and the result was a very muddy mix. It was difficult to hear the vocals and subtleties. I don't know if Patty had her own sound crew, but whomever did the sound, did not do her and her band justice. REALLY unfortunate.

John Hiatt was amazing, as always! I forget how prolific a writer he is. I didn't know that he wrote "Memphis in the Meantime". I always knew that as a Sam Bush song. He put on a great show. Joe Pug was great as well. I've been following his career for quite sometime and he just keeps getting better and better. Ashley Monroe was very good. Didn't know her music before the show and I really liked it. I would go see her again. Brandy Clark was great! I knew several of her songs, because they are sung by other musicians. Her album is on my to buy list. Will definitely see her again.

Great venue. John Hiatt was spectacular. I was most disappointed that nor food or drink was allowed into the venue. Given the price of admission, especially pricey with the TicketMaster add-ons, it seems that bing allowed to bring ones own food and drink would have been more than reasonable for an outdo on on the grass venue. I will check the small print more carefully next time and not attend with the food/drink restriction.

Love love love Patty. Her voice is straight from heaven. I do wish she would have played a couple of my old favorites, like Making Pies or Rain. Her new album is beautiful and very personal. But also a little sad as it was written about her Dad as he was dying. I can see myself listening to it at home but not great for a night out. Ironically her music was my personal therapy for the loss of my Mom.
