Hans Zimmer

Hans Zimmer retains his crown as one of the greatest Hollywood composers of all time, creating epic, memorable scores for some of the biggest and most acclaimed films released every year. Those who buy tickets to the films he scores - or the lucky few who may see him on a concert tour - are swept up in an astonishingly diverse and captivating wall of sound, encompassing a wide range of influences. Everything from electronica to world music and orchestral sounds are included in Zimmer's fascinating soundtracks, succinctly capturing the environment and themes of the films he works on. In 2014, Zimmer's score for Ridley Scott’s acclaimed 2000 epic Gladiator will be presented live in concert for the first time in the UK, performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra and Philharmonia Chorus conducted by Justin Freer.

If you're thinking about getting tickets, just do it. Hans Zimmer does not disappoint. He put on a nearly 3 hour show featuring a wide variety of musical styles and instruments from his vast repertoire of film scores. Each musician was given a chance a shine and Hans did a great job highlighting each of their achievements. You could tell everyone on stage was having a great time, which made for a really fun and engaging show. I was surprised by what a great stage presence Hans was - he was constantly cracking jokes and telling stories in between sets. I thought the sound was well-mixed and just the right volume. Overall a magical night, and one that I would love to experience again.

The musicianship was outstanding, but sadly, the overall volume was simply overwhelming. It actually hurt my ears - it took away the beauty of the event - everything was just too loud - and why? So we all could hear it distorted? Complex music that is so well executed should not be sacrificed like this!

My wife and I were amazed that we would have the chance to see the amazing composer, but little did we know that this concert would be so amazing! To hear such epic music from such an authentic person was truly refreshing. Each score was truly masterful and I truly appreciated hearing the famed composer inform us about each one and its rich history. If given the opportunity I HIGHLY recommend taking part in the experience. A big thank you to one Hans Zimmer and his orchestra and please never stop playing the amazing you music you do.

Hans is a terrific performer. He engaged with the audience between most songs, describing the inspiration behind them. I would love to see him in an outdoor venue. This was my first time at the Civic Auditorium and we sat upper level, section 212. The view was fine. The access to food and drinks was the easiest I have experienced at any venue in recent times. The only thing I would say is the sound engineers could have balanced the performers better. There was a full line of vocal choir in the back row, and I never heard them once. Even the vocalists who had solos in front of stage could barely be heard. The stringed instruments were fine and sounded clear and sharp. As for the base, well, I enjoy feeling the sub-woofers as much as the next guy, but when they match the resonant frequency of the building and the roof panels begin to rattle and buzz, it distracts from the music I intended to hear. This was a constant distraction throughout the performance. In the beginning, it was novel, but as the performance went on the the buzzing continued, the entire sound experience became muddied. Loved Hans Zimmer...not so much the venue sound characteristics.

It was exciting to see Hans Zimmer live after listening to his music for many years, even before he was widely popular. He composes some gorgeous music that has a lot of emotion. Although some pieces I like were played, it was not as beautiful as the original soundtrack. I wish the music was more orchestral and not so re-arranged with accentuated percussions and electric guitar. I guess he tries to make his music more cross-over and less like a traditional "classical" concert. Hans Zimmer made certain choices and cannot please everyone, both in the style and in his choice of music to play in 3 hours from his prolific music collection. Zimmer announced his Thin Red Line part as "weird", though I thing it is one of his most beautiful music (again, too much percussion in the concert).

It was a great event. His entire crew were specialists in their own ways and each track tried to focus on separate set of instruments. I went to school with Hans Zimmer in Germany. He was in the School of Music - I was in the School of Veterinary Medicine. His talent showed then. He and his orchestra were amazing in this, his first world tour. My friends who accompanied me had no idea what was coming. I appreciated his relationship with his multi-cultural musicians, his and their senses of humor and their vast talent. I've loved every soundtrack and every note he has composed. He's a Master.

Hans Zimmer in concert was completely overwhelming in the most incredible way. If you have the chance and you liked even one of his scores (Dark Knight, Gladiator, Inception... The Lion King :) GO SEE HIM. Hard to say "him" because there were so many other players- chorus, strings/brass orchestra, THREE drummers, all of the major components of a regular band, plus Hans on the keys and a parade of guest vocalists. Definitely a unique experience. The encore alone was worth the entire 3 hr concert!

I agree with the last review. I believed we were going to be attending a concert with an orchestra playing Hans Zimmer's music. Instead we discovered when we got there that it was a lecture and Q&A with Hans Zimmer. Its one thing to enjoy the man's music and another to want to hear him and a man that I've never heard of talk for two hours. To make things worse, I also ended up having to pay $25 for parking at the L.A. Live Center. And we had to sit in traffic for over an hour just to get there. It ended up being a horrible evening. This event should NOT have been listed under music, or if it was it should have been noted that it was a lecture/interview. It turned out to be a giant waste of time money. Its really nothing against Mr. Zimmer because he seems like a really nice and interesting guy in addition to how great his music is. But I would not have paid almost $80 if I had known what the event really was.

Very subjective review; it was an event I personally won't go to again. The first half of the event was nice, however, the 2nd half only comprised of constant distortion and the same, heavy drum beat. I honestly couldn't distinguish one score from another, and it just sounded like a high quality cacophony of everything. I was hoping for some of the non-sensory-assault scores, but that wasn't the case. Also doesn't help that each of these go for 10 minutes straight! They did end the concert with "Time" which was great. It would have been great to have more scores like that. Don't get me wrong; all the musicians on the stage were undoubtedly and hands down some of the best I've seen perform. Each of them individually was great. It was just the choice of scores, as well as the order and duration of each that made the 2nd half feel just overwhelming and left me feeling very worn out.

A stage full of master musicians, led by the Master Composer musician Hans. Rhythms and integration as precise as a Swiss watch. Just wish they didn't have to turn to 11 on every song. It sounds the most supernaturally magnificent when you can actually hear it all. Once they crank of the volume, it drowns out the clarity. Still absolutely amazing. Interstellar moves me to core each and every single time that organ is played.

The middle was mediocre, but the beginning and the end were excellent. I thoroughly enjoy his music and am quite familiar with it. It was filled with all the best hits, and it was performed incredibly. Obviously sound quality was not top notch, but then again, it was an outdoor amphitheater and was expected. However, many of his lesser-known songs got old. There was a 20 to 30 minute segment of heavy rock music (used during the action movies that he has done) which were unexcitingly repetitive. It's understandable since these were written to accompany something visual, not as a standalone piece. Still worth going, but don't expect to love every minute.

A visual and auditory experience that will leave you wanting more. Throughout the 3-hour show, Hans Zimmer performed songs from some of his most notable scores, including Gladiator, Batman, The Lion King, The Da Vinci Code and Inception. He was accompanied by a full orchestra, choir, guitarists, and special guests. Even though he was backed up by a full orchestra, this in no way was a traditional classical concert. Many times, during the show, I thought to myself this is classical music infused with rock and roll. Some of my favorite moments was when the inexhaustible composer would stop between numbers to share with the audience some behind-the-scenes tales of working on the films. I hope to see him again

One of the best experiences of my life. Hans's music truly is full of masterpieces. I've been listening to his soundtracks for six years now, and they've definitely become a part of me. Without even realizing, I have memorized the motions of almost every song I listen to, and hearing everything live with the music was physically pumping through me was truly, truly incredible. He played all of my favorites, going through every song I had wanted to hear (and even the ones I didn't know I wanted to hear). Walked away with zero percent disappointment. What a fantastic concert! Though not all of the Movie scores were recognizable (Movies we haven't seen), the music and caliber of musicianship was incredible. I was floored to see someone like Guthrie Govan playing guitar as part of the band - the melody he played with slide during the Interstellar soundtrack was one of the concert highlights. Besides being a great musician, Hans played several instruments and conducted much of the music - the way he introduced many of the musicians was very gracious.

This was by far the greatest concert I've ever been to. I've always talked about wanting to go to something like this and now it finally exists. The music was superb of course, and the crowd was enthusiastic but not rowdy - a concert like this attracts a little different clientele than others. Seats weren't terrible- we were in a side balcony viewing everything from an angle so we could see all the primary musicians but not all the stuff in the back, such as the lighting effects on the wall behind the orchestra. If this is the kind of music you like, I'd HIGHLY recommend checking out their other US tour dates later this summer! Make sure to wait for the Inception encore!

Who would have thought that a concert by a composer could be amazing, energizing, moving and compelling? Hans Zimmer and his entire group of musicians provided the audience with an evening of pure joy. I went because I absolutely love his Pirates of the Caribbean scores, but I thoroughly enjoyed each one of his compositions, even those I wasn't familiar with. His cast of characters were a joy to not only listen to, but to watch. These very talented musicians clearly enjoy what they do and who they do it with. My only complaint is that there were no CD's available for purchase at the venue. I was prepared to purchase a CD before the concert and went back to the concession stand to ask if perhaps I'd just not seen a CD for sale but they had them hidden away. No such luck and I'm left to search on amazon.com.

I get lost in movie soundtracks and often find myself shazaming to find out who the composer/artist is. Hans Zimmer has composed scores for some of the BEST movies out there! His work is moving and easily recognizable. There were even a few surprises I didn't know he composed. The musicians involved were amazing as was Zimmer's interaction with the audience. Overall, great show!

For the full evening, Hans Zimmer shared some of the absolute highlights of his long, successfull career as a movie soundtrack composer. With humor and interesting stories between the pieces, Mr Zimmer kept us entertained all through the concert. Any fan of his works would be advised to go to a concert of his - you will not be disappointed!

I have loved the work of Hans Zimmer for a long time. He is the source of so many amazing scores that have shaped the culture in which we live and the memories we have about impactful movies. It is a rare instance that you get to hear a movie score live, by most of the original musicians! The sound was unbelievable. My only complaint was that it started 45 minutes late with no explanation. If there were technical difficulties, someone should have gone on stage to let the audience know. There are only so many time you can do the wave before it gets old.

The concert was honestly awe-inspiring. It was an artful mesh of visuals and audio, creating a truly memorable experience. The music was powerful and moving, an emotional rollercoaster that had everyone alive with energy and rooted to the spot in awe. The visuals were astounding, painting an image to fit the music and adding to it, supporting it, showing the emotion of the pieces while managing to not detract from the music itself. It was a truly amazing experience, and I would definitely go again if the opportunity presents itself.

Awesome moment in my life to experience this incredibly talented man live. The crew he assembled was top notch. He even had the original singer from The Lion King present. My only negative comment is I thought was a bit too loud. Regardless, an unforgettable night.

As a huge film music fan with no actual music experience outside of Intro to Music Theory in college, I was concerned I wouldn't be able to appreciate Hans Zimmer's live music. Boy was I wrong. Even to the untrained ear, every score sounded even better live than in the theater. The musicians were absolutely incredible, and added their own twists to themes from Inception, Lion King, Pirates of the Caribbean and more, while preserving the sound that makes them so iconic. I'd never been to the Wang Theater, but wow is it beautiful. The perfect venue for a stunning performance. Hans himself didn't speak often, but when he did, he was humorous and earnest with his audience.

The Hans Zimmer concert will take you on an emotional roller coaster. You will laugh, gasp, cry, cheer--all in the span of 3 hours. The musicians were fabulous! Incredible performances by the choir. What a phenomenal assortment of entertainers. Can't wait to see him again. One negative-- they started about 45 minutes late!

A terrific concert generally. What you'd expect from a Hans Zimmer Concert. I had a problem with the venue, the Greek Theatre. It was an open door concert, and I thought an indoor concert would be better soundwise. A above average light show, I felt. If you go see a concert like this...get the best seats possible, although at the Greek, sitting on a lawn seemed like a attractive idea. Even though it was an outdoors concert, all the seats were full , by the middle of the Concert. One of the downsides to going to a concert like this. is you can just save yourself money, and watch the Concert online...Zimmer does the concert the same way no matter what venue around the world. Wait for the Hans Zimmer Concert movie, save yourself a lot of money. Lots of good things about this show. The fabulous compositions, the light show. The Orchestra. Zimmer has a working Rock orchestra here, maybe he was influenced by musical groups like E.L.O , Electric Light Orchestra. The Musicians are great....I really liked the guitar solos like from the movie '"Inception", there was this quiet moment when he did "Journey to the line" from the movie "The Thin Red Line", then there was music and a light show after that , that was the highlight of the show. Worth checking out if you like his music whether you see it live, or recorded. A couple of days after the show, I'm replaying bits of the live performance, online though.

I was lucky enough to see Hans Zimmer twice on this tour. I saw him in April at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco and then in Berkeley at the Greek on August 9th. Both shows were amazing and unforgettable. He fills the stage with talented musicians and singers and each composition can turn into a veritable wall of sound and dramatic lighting and video images, as you'd expect from a composer who works mostly in the action film genre. If he ever goes on tour again and comes through town I absolutely will not miss it!

Hands down the best concert I have ever been to! I was smiling the whole time! He puts on such an amazing show, from start to finish. I loved hearing all my favorites live (like Pirates) but he also stopped and talked about what he was doing when he was writing pieces. The story of the Dark Knight left everyone with chills. Not too much chatter, mostly just him and his orchestra playing beautiful music. You can tell he loves what he does and he's so passionate which is why he has all the success he does. SO great, from beginning to end.

Faithfully orchestrated renditions of Zimmer's famous soundtracks. A remix of Molossus and concluding with Interstellar and Inception.

This was quite possibly the best concert I have ever attended. The musicians were outstanding, the music was perfect and the sound system and experience were second to none. I'd recommend this show to anyone that has watched a single movie for which Hans has written the score. If he returns to the area, I'll be going back again even if the concert was the exact same. Well worth it!

I had an excellent time with the music, lights and overall ambiance. First half is definitely the best. Second half got a bit rowdy with superheroes, but closed strong with Interstellar and then the Inception encore.

Hans Zimmer put on an absolutely enthralling show. The focus was on the music, as there was some dramatic lighting and a background screen that displayed various images and videos of musicians playing, but no "over the top" lasers or excessive distractions. Including a 15 minute intermission, the show went for about 3 hours. By my count there were 14 separate pieces of music, either as stand-alone numbers or as medleys. If you like the dramatic movie scores that he has written, this show will not disappoint. I was surprised at the size of the crowd, even though they only had open about 2/3 of the arena, it was still far less than half full. I think this was due to ticket price, had seats been cheaper I believe the audience would have been much larger. I also didn't see a lot of advance publicity about the show.
