I saw the Byrds maybe 50 years ago? (ouch) This was not only a collection of beautiful music and memories but he took you through a trip from when he picked up his first guitar to how progression came about. Sad when I think of the ones that have left us but even nicer to know not forgotten. An awesome awesome man.

Roger was fantastic. It was especially interesting that he took the concepts of the history of folk music, his own history and his influences and wove them into a musical extravaganza. It was a real treat from beginning to end. The small intimate venue at the Bethel Woods Arts Center added to the atmosphere.

Great guitarist & good vocalist. Good variety of songs and use of different guitars. Interseting sound bites between songs that create an interesting trip through time from his personal perspective with references to music types, theory and historical progression. It is very enjoyable and entertaining. My 22 year old son thought he was good! We'll go again when he is in the NY area.

Concert was much different than expected, with Roger McGuinn taking us on a musical journey with very interesting and entertaining dialogue chronicling his "Back Pages." He had an excellent delivery, both verbally and musically. Many of the songs were incomplete, used only as a reference, but thought this was great, as he was able to fit a lot in this way. He played for 140 minutes with no break. Were surprised that there was no break, but most likely it would have ruined the flow of the narrative. The venue was incredible- gorgeous building, intimate setting and amenities were all very comfortable and convenient.

This was my first time attending a Roger McGuinn performance. Outstanding is the first word that comes to mind concerning his performance. He had everyone in the palm of his hand from the momment he took the stage. His story telling of his life's experiences was engrossing and informative. His musical ability was amazing and flawless and flowed so smoothly from his hands. He made it seem "easy" but his life's story told of how hard he had practiced to get to where he is now musically. I came away with a profound appreciation for the man and his music. He made everyone feel "at home" with his performance. I would see him again in a heartbeat. I am informing all my friends of this amazing musician and person.

I wanted to go to the original Woodstock Concert site, to see where it all happened. At the same time I figured on seeing a concert, since I had a 3 hour drive each way. The Woodstock museum and site were great, and the Roger McGuinn concert was amazing. Here is a guy that has been performing for 50 years, and is still at the top of his game. He told stories about the Folk movement of the day, and about his personal history. The show was incredible, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys Folk music, and the music of the Byrds.

Roger is probably one of the most underrated singer/songwriter/storyteller around. I had second thoughts about going, and afterward i was blown away by his musicianship, vocals after all these years, and presentation of pretty much the evolution of FOLK/ROCK- coined to describe what the Byrds were doing in the 60's. A wonderful journey before and since The Byrds. What a shame Gene Clark passed away in 1991. They made beautiful music together. A must see for anyone of our generation, and all others, also. Remember, like my wife said- These guys wont be around forever- enjoy now!!!

Unbelievable. That's how I remember the swirling sound the electric 12-string reverberating through a room not much bigger than a Starbucks, as Roger McGuinn delivered Eight Miles High in a rich tenor that hasn't lost a shred of its original luster. McGuinn was a true folkie, sharing vignettes from musical history, as well as his own stints with groups such as the Limelighters and Bobby Darin. I always though of him as more of a rock 'n' roller, and couldn't be more enthralled to hear him stripped to his guitars, a banjo, and a handful of life stories. Engaging the audience. Making people laugh and smile. That's the way it's done, folks. I won't go into a song-by-song analysis. Suffice it to say that hearing everything from old blues songs and sea shanties to Byrds classics from Gene Clark to Gram Parsons era and beyond, some classic rock 'n' roll snippets thrown in to enliven the stories, I was blown away. It was like going to see the Beatles. My favorite moments? A hypnotic rendition of Joni Mitchell's Dreamland. The amazing acoustic arrangement of Eight Miles High. The wonderful Byrds B-side She Don't Care About Time. A traditional folk song called Well Well Well that every folk singer should learn immediately. The 5D encore. And on, and on... Cheers, Roger McGuinn!

I saw Roger McGuinn at Villa Montalvo in Saratoga, CA. It was one of the best performances that I have seen in the last 40 years. Not only is his voice still in top form but he is one of the best guitar (both 6 and 12 string) players that I have seen. Roger McGuinn is a treasure that everyone should take the time to enjoy. I hope that he plays around here soon. I definitely would love to see him again.

Roger McGuinn lead a clinic on rock n' roll history at Villa Montalvo, Saratoga, Ca. a few evenings ago. The dapper McGuinn looked fluid and loose as he explained his musical history from the early years in Chicago and New York with the Lime Lighters to his time with the Byrds and the film score for Easy Rider. He would punctuate his experiences with the songs he wrote at the time. A unique and fascinating evening with an American musical treasure. He did not delve into his current folk music projects ...... A great show!

What a treat... a full two hours of stories and songs tracing Roger's incredible folk and folk rock career from earliest folksinger days in Chicago to the forming and success of The Byrds to his later songwriting. He's a charming storyteller... Bob Gibson, Baez , Dylan, Big Bill Broonzy, The Limelighters, Beatles, Byrds and The BeeGees are a few of the folks he met along the way. And his 6- and 12-string playing, WOW! Irish folksongs, blues, Byrds/Dylan hits, dazzling bluegrass. Loved it all!

I thought it was going to be only a performance of songs, but he gave us a vast musical chronicle of his life. A great one man show, as rich as Ray Davies' story of his Kinks. A very entertaining glimpse at the evolution of his country and folk style with a " Beatle beat " added . I felt very fortunate to share some time with Roger and learn about all the influences that formed his sound.

McGuinn put on a great show last night. The house was small, but packed. The intimate Carriage House at Villa Montalvo inteh Saratoga Hills - the perfect place to see acoustic folk music. McGuinn started promptly at 7:30 playing his Martin seven-string acoustic (a special model made for him to allow sounds like a 12 string, he later explained). He was sitting o a stool, and flanked by a 5-string banjo, 12-stirng acoustic, and of course, 12-string Rickenbacker electric. Over the next 110 minutes, McGuinn took us through a mostly chronological review of his history, starting with Bob Gibson folk, and tales of the young "know it all" McGuinn going to music school in Chicago. From there, tales of backing the Limelighters and Chad Mitchell Trio, where on a USIA tour of South America, he sat on a cliff, and wrote some cliff music. This turned out to be the bridge to Chestnut Mare, of which he then did a beautiful version. Back to tales of working for Bobby Darin, starting the Byrds, and off we go! Highlights were McGuinn's guitar playing and storytelling, which made the show a lot lot Ray Davies' Storyteller shows of years past. And the songs. Old Blue, Mr. Spaceman, Wasn't Born to Follow, Pretty Boy Floyd, Sou You Want to be a Rock and Roll Star, Just a Season... The list goes on. The show ended with encores of Turn Turn Turn (electric) and Eight Miles High on the 7-string. And we walked out into the cool fall air at 9:20 in the evening, walked through the trees to the parking lot, and headed down the hill towards home. Great show.

His talent was amazing and impeccable. His stories of the places he's been & the things he's done are also very enlightening. Also amazing is how he played many songs that I've never heard him perform before (live), and continually outdid himself. It's a real privilege to be able to experience him "in person". Thank you !!!

Mr.Tambourine was released 44 years ago. Although the record featured a full band all those years ago, no one seemed to miss them last night in Malibu as McGuinn played that charming, chiming intro and sang the words everyone has known since 1965. Even though that 12 string sound is his major legacy he deserves a lot of credit for making so many Dylan songs palatable to the masses with his gentle slightly sad voice. He pretty much led everyone through a time machine, with amusing anecdotes about all the big names he played with before anyone had ever heard of The Byrds and playing all the Byrds songs that a retrospective show would demand. What was crystal clear last night was just how good he is on any guitar, with a master craftsman's touch that is rooted in a skillful banjo style and folk picking tricks that sound like two or three guitars playing at once. Yes, Crosby and Clark and Hillman were a significant part of The Byrds but McGuinn was always the main event. and that was obvious at this show. You missed some harmonies at times but you could hear some of that from the audience occasionally.

This was the first time I have seen Roger McGuinn in person and he did a great solo performance of the Byrds hits and some of his own. He was on stage for about an hour and forty minutes without an intermission and delivered a great performance without interruption. I felt that his guitar playing was some of the best that I have ever seen and I've seen a lot of performers over the years. His concert was like an autobiography of his career and was very enjoyable. I recommend seeing him if you have any interest at all in the 60s music scene and he might best appeal to baby boomers, but his music, I feel, is enjoyable for all ages. Go see him!

I have been a fan of the Roger Mcguinn and the Byrds for over 4 decades, so lets get that right out front. I was aware of much of the bands history but had no idea how little I knew of McGuinn's role, until he started literally sharing his entire music history, woven through the fabric of so many memorable songs, along with songs that influenced him prior to becoming a rock star. It was interesting to learn of his roots as a guitar player, songwriter, and band member of one of rock's most notable bands. Roger's voice is still as rich and distinctive as it was 40 years ago, as are his guitar chops, so it was a real treat to have the opportunity to experience a wonderful evening with one of rock's true living legends. The only thing I can say that isn't 100% supportive of his performance is that I felt he talked a little much, when he could have been singing and playing more. But I also understand that its important that he does talk as much as he does, as he is sharing his life story, so its a kind of paradox and I give him the benefit of the doubt.

Though I hoped for a full band, Roger's solo performance was outstanding. He covered his career, had terrific stage presence and sang beautifully. The anecdotes as he went along really added to the show. Another bonus was Bergen PAC's sound was better than usual. It can be way loud, muddled, drums and bass guitar crushing and vocal/instrumental mix off. Saturday there was some muddle and the mix could have been better. Given the technology and supposed expertise of the people on the board I don't understand why the sound isn't consistently what it can be. That in mind, my 'Venue' Rating referred to the performance.

Several years ago I had the opportunity to speak with Roger's wife, Camilla, prior to a show in Old Saybrook CT. I mentioned I had been disappointed that at a show the previous year at Infinity Hall in Norfolk CT Roger did not include The Bells of Rhymney in the setlist and I would pay just to hear that one song. i asked if it might be planned for that evening. "I really don't know" she replied. The first set came and went. Roger came out for the second set and, sure enough, the third song was my Byrds favorite "the Bells of Rhymney". After the show I caught up with her again to express my gratitude and asked if my request was responsible for that song's inclusion. "Oh, I'll never tell" she said with a coy smile. Maybe, maybe not, but I can always believe my request did put that song in the show.

If Roger's songs weren't enough to thoroughly entertain you then his stories about the songs, or his life and career surely will. What a great 2 hours of music and rock & folk history including his pre-Byrds years, collaborating with Crosby, Clark, Dylan, Petty to name a few. Or his anecdotes about the Beatles, the Stones, Clapton, Springsteen, George Harrison, Leadbelly and on and on. He played 4 stringed instruments but none had 6 strings. There was the Rickenbacker electric 12-string of course, the Martin acoustic 12-string, a 5-string banjo and a custom Martin model Roger McGuinn HD-7 which is a 7-string hybrid he invented. Happliy all 3 acoustic instruments were mic'ed, not acoustic/electrics with pickups. And oh the difference in sound!

Hearing Roger McGuinn playing the Byrds classics on several guitars including his 12 string was fantastic. He was on stage by himself so the outstanding quality of his guitar playing was on full display. However, if you are expecting a recreation of a Byrds like band experience you could be disappointed. At the beginning of the concert the audience was asked not to photograph or film his performance until the encore when he of course played Turn Turn Turn. Another really great part of the concert were the numerous stories he told about the 60's, the early days of the Byrds, naming the band, recording Mr. Tambourine Man, and Bob Dylan. If he comes to your town go see him!!!

We enjoyed the performance. Roger is talented and personable. He sang and chatted with the audience in a very pleasant manner. We were asked to sing along for some of the choruses which is something I always enjoy very much. My wife and I attended Roger McGuinn's performance 0n 4 March. I was the huge Byrd's fan, and my wife wasn't sure what to expect. We both thought McGuinn's performance was phenomenal. The songs (most written by McGuinn) were a broad sample of his music across many years (with great background stories), and brought back great memories of The Byrds and Dylan and others. I was blown away by his guitar playing ability. Whether it was the 12-string electric Rickenbacker, his 7-string Martin, or the banjo, McGuinn can flat play. It was a wonderful evening and I would definitely recommend his performance to any real rock and roll fan!

Roger had just the right mix of music, talk, and was totally in tune with his audience. He did what we enjoy which is to do a little background before singing a song so it made you feel more a part of the experience that led up to the song being written. Enjoyed his short reminiscences about his times with other musicians, writers, etc. in his career. Yep, he can still still play and sing. The Byrds tunes obviously suffer from the lack of harmonies, given that it's a one man show. We actually saw Dylan the night before, so given their relationship, it made for a cohesive experience. Highly recommend, especially for the stories.

Did a lot of short songs and short versions, mostly acoustic. Did the Byrds' big hits and more. Glad he did Chestnut Mare. Both his voice and his guitar ring true. Great stories of the Byrds' beginning and of the songs, funny, too. Comments on Dylan, the Beatles, even Bobby Darin and the Bee Gees. great music / history lesson. I am not a big folk music fan, but knowing how rock was influenced makes me like it more. there is nothing better than watching some one that loves and is truly good at what they do.

The Stiefel Theater is beautiful and the sound fantastic. Besides singing the old favorites, Roger entertained us with the "back stories" with each song. Learning the history of his music was very entertaining.

We enjoyed the 1 man show was entertaining and very interesting. The personal method of telling us about his musical carrier and his music was very novel and was an excellent way to showcase his talents. Thanks for the show. Rick Cooper Hutchinson, Kansas

When the first chords of that magnificient twelve string Rickenbacker rang from off stage we were instantly transported, not just back in time, but into the mind of an iconic musical genius. Roger McGuinn strolled on stage with a grin that stayed with him until he walked off after his encore. We were convinced he truly wanted to be there sharing his life's story which, by the way, happens to be an integral part of the history of American music. If you're familiar with his Live from Mars album you have an idea of the format of the program. McGuinn repeatedly switched between his Rickenbacker, a banjo, an accoustic twelve string, and a seven string accoustic he invented. His songs are interspersed with antidotes of their origin and influence, so naturally Bob Dylan and Tom Petty come up more than once. As the two hour concert progressed the amazing scope of this man's career became apparent. His singing was flawless, his guitar playing was magical, and his story telling fascinating. The sound mixer was having some problems that at times were a distraction to both audience and performer, the only flaw to a near perfect experience. The Stiefel is a true gem now after ten years of renovation and with world class acts, it's my favorite venue. If you get a chance to see Roger McGuinn, it better be a danged good reason why you don't go.

Roger McGuinn shared stories and background information before and after each song which was very interesting. Much of the information shared was new to me and gave me a glimpse of how his career developed over the years. You felt like you knew Roger on a personal basis after being privy to inside information about him throughout the concert. He seemed like a nice , humble person. The sound was balanced well such that the guitar could be heard but did not overwhelm his singing. The renditions of the classic hits were well done given he was performing solo with no backup at all. An accomplished guitar player who made it look easy.

Roger McGuinn gave a first hand history of the 60' and 70' along with the music he helped create. Music was great; trip down memory lane was great. Good story teller and great musician.

Roger McGuinn is still kicking it at 71 years of age, long after most rock stars of his era have either died or retired. In his present shows, he showcases and explains his roots in folk and rock music from the early days, and presents a tasteful mix of of tunes from the various stages of his career. Guitar fans will love the classic jingle-jangle sound of the Rickenbacker 370/12 guitar, as well as his 12 and 7 string Martin acoustic guitars, as well as a couple of tunes on the Vega/Ode banjo. Now most music fans who were born after 1970 will probably not even know who Roger is, but those of us from that earlier era can help to clue them in, and perhaps bring them to a show, and see some real talent that does not rely on technology. This is about the closest thing any of us will ever see to a Byrds reunion, so go see Roger whenever he is playing in a city near you.

Far exceeded my expectations. I caught my wife singing along. Roger changed his set list and the stories too. Wish I has written the songs down. Oh well. What a rich and wonderful mixture of old folk, Byrd favs, and originals. I've heard the Byrds at the Marigold Ballroom in Mpls. in 1966 The first time I attended a solo show was many years ago at the Guthrie in Mpls. and I think he opened for Waylon, if my memory serves me well. I've attended his shows in Clearwater, Tampa, Gainesville, and Sarasota when I lived in Florida. Saw him a few times in Minnesota in the last few years. His Rochester Mn. show was, by far, the most enjoyable of them all. He just gets better. He said he'd perform until he couldn't, so I'll keep going to his concerts until I can't. What a thrill.

i wish i could tell Roger McGuinn in person this was the best concert i've ever been to. It was a small, but intimate crowd and the best way to explain just how cool this show was is to tell you it was like being at a "unplugged" or "storytellers" taping. We enjoyed you so much and I'll definitely buy tickets the next time you play anywhere near us.... Thankyou for such a special show-- my wife really enjoyed this birthday present... cheers

Roger presented his own personal history, combining it seamlessly with a history of music. His tutorial on the qualities of different stringed instruments and how the sound of a song is changed by the number of strings on a guitar was intriguing. He demonstrated that his virtuoso as a musician has only increased with age. Though the entire performance was enjoyable, I especially loved the numbers he played on his electric guitar, which had the "jingly jangly" sound I fell in love with as a young teen in the sixties.

To say I felt fortunate to see such an icon, in such a small intimate setting as the Folly Theatre in Kansas City, would be a total understatement. Most of the evening, it felt like I was like sitting in his front room, listening to the stories and the music of an amazing career. To know where music went from, for example, the Beatles forward, one must follow Roger McGuinn and learn to appreciate his immense contributions. Perhaps not one whose name is as recognizable as Clapton and a few others of the same era continue to be today, he is truly one of a kind, in his talent, the scope of his music and where it directed those who followed. If you get the chance, go see him!

The show and the setting were both incredible. An intimate setting to listen and learn about the history of music and the life of Roger McGuinn. Stories about his life and musical development were punctuated by musical interludes that were flawless and reminiscent of the sound he created. A delightful evening for all who appreciate the artistry of a true legend in the history of rock and roll.

Approximately two hours of listening to Roger perform songs from The Byrds, from the genesis of folk music, and from the first days of his career to today. He told lots of great stories about The Byrds and their contemporaries including Dylan, The Beatles, Baez, Joni Mitchell and many more. The intimate venue and respectful, appreciative audience helped make the experience completely enjoyable. Roger performed The Byrds' biggest hits, including My Back Pages, Turn, Turn, Turn, Eight Miles High, Mr. Tambourine Man and quite a few more. If I could have requested a song that was not included in the show, it would be Chimes of Freedom.
