Colón Hay is experiencing his second coming, sort of. His shows are 1 part storyteller, 1 part musical and pop genius, and 3 parts comedian. The thing is, he's either unknown to younger generations or barely know about the caliber and scope of his success in the early 80s. His delivery is warm, funny, and feels as intimate and natural in a big venue as a living room. It's worth knowing his songs but not necessary.

I was looking forward to seeing a fellow Ayrshire boy in concert, but this turned out to be even better than I thought. Played stuff all the way from the beginning to the very latest (about to be released) albums. Killer version of "Down By The Sea" was a highlight for me, and all the hits were peppered in there ;) (inside joke) If you get the chance, go see the man. You will not be disappointed. .

Fun concert! The club was small and comfortable, and Colin spoke to the audience several times. Very cozy. He did all the favorites, plus songs from his new CD (which we bought on the way out). The dancer on stage (who turned out to be his wife) was a distraction, but aside from that, it was a perfect concert!

I've admired Colin Hay's work for a long time but this was my first opportunity to see him perform live in a solo acoustic setting. His vocal range is still amazing and his guitar style can range from forceful and agressive to tender and delicate in accordance with the mood of the song. Between songs, he's a man with endless and amusing anecdotes about his life and career. He remains in awe of having the priviledge to your perform with Ringo Starr's All Star band. He was clearly influenced by the Fab Four in his youth but his music is uniquely his. His set was almost 2 hours of clever, catchy tunes (Are You Lookin' At Me?) and tender moments (Waiting For My Real Life To Begin). I drove from Chicago to Grand Rapids, MI to catch his show and would do it again in a heartbeat. He sincerely thanked his fans for coming out to the show and graciously spent time after the show to meet with his fans. A classy act and a talented musician.

Though I was teenager when Men at Work came out in the early 80s, I was somewhat familiar with Mr. Hay's solo work from Scrubs and Garden State, but did not know what to expect from Hay's acoustic show. I was very pleased. Hays is a very talented songwriter and musician. His songs from his new album are engaging both musically and lyrically and his "re-interpretations" of the familiar 80s anthems brought me back to my awkward teen years, but with a slightly different feel, kind of meeting a friend that you haven't seen in a very long time.

Colin Hay is a poet with pipes. He's as funny as any comic you've ever known, and a gifted storyteller. His warm stories of his love for parents show his depth of soul, which you feel in his unique music. This performance sticks with you many days after the show

My daughter gave me tickets for the show because I always loved Men at Work and she was listening to Collin's acoustic work. He is truly a gifted artist that is funny and captivating. Working in Alexandria for nearly 30 years, this was my first time at the Birchmere and I have to say that I will be back! Great venue. I can't wait until he comes back, definitely one of my top favorite shows. Thanks Sarah. : )

Had the pleasure of seeing Colin Hay in a solo concert last year and he was fantastic! Could not wait until he would return this year to 'hear' his great voice and listen to his many humorous stories about his professional and personal past. With just his guitars and his wonderful voice you could 'hear' every single word and escape into the story telling of his ballads. With background videos accompanying his singing you were drawn into the theme of the song and soon forgot that you were not alone but actually in the midst of a concert crowd. A perfect example was his touching song written to his father called "Dear Father". With a background video of his early years with his father you were mesmerized by his heart felt lyrics in his singing. When the song was over he would once again turn into the other story teller which was of his life on the road. This year he had a backup band and it just didn't work. The background music was so loud that it drowned out most of Colin's singing. If I did not know the song I had a hard time following Colin's words of the song because of the high volume music. On only a couple songs, like "Maggie" and "A Thousand Million Reasons" you were able to hear and concentrate on his incredible voice because the band toned it down where you could hear the song. It's not as if the band was bad, the drummer and keyboard/sax/clarinet performers were good, but I and I believe most of the audience came to hear Colin sing. His wife was one of the backup vocals but she spent more time floating around on the stage in her own little world. I was hoping that Colin would give the band a break (like maybe 30 minutes or more) and just have the stage to himself to perform his true talent. If this was the first time you were able to attend one of his concerts you probably thought it was pretty good. If you were at last years concert and again at this one you left the concert hall scratching your head and asking "What was that?!?).

Colin just gets better and better, but adding a backup band kinda ruined the show for me. His wife does some weird performance art thing that was distracting and annoying. I saw him last year and was blown away; he had a great combination of new stuff and old Men at Work stuff and was a great story teller. This time he had to share the stage and it lost its magic. Overall I would still recommend but it's a close one.

There is a lot to love about Colin Hay- he's a bit of a music icon in his own right. He smiles and shows passion throughout a show. He's hilarious and shares some music history between songs. His song writing is part moving, part deeply witty and part pure fun but all the time worth listening to. But this show missed the mark. The band, a largely Spanish based band singing and playing some random Spanish hits in the middle of the show like the opposite of a siesta, was a little too loud and a little to eclectic for my taste. We come for a night with Colin Hay as we have several times before. We got Colin's alter ego. I know she's his wife so I want to be sensitive here, but his wife was in stage the whole time on background vocals. She was nothing other than a distraction to us. Wearing a leotard out of an Olivia Newton John Let's Get Physical, she'd do random jazzersize kicks and then reinact songs. She'd add her own flare which was not only distracting but made me wonder if this really wasn't part in jest. We didn't know it was his wife until after the show. I love Colin Hay. But I'll never go back to a "full band" show. Colin as a one man show is one of the best singer-songwriter nights you can go to, but the full band was too odd, too loud, too forced, too distracting and didn't give you that time with Colin that you always feel like you take home with you. It's missed the mark.

My wife and I saw Colin Hay at the Parker Playhouse last year and we just LOVED the show. It was just Colin and his guitar. We weren't necessarily big "Men at Work" fans, but always enjoyed the hits when they came on the radio. I can't say enough about last years concert. This man is so very gifted. He has an incredible voice, he writes some incredible songs, and he can hold his own as a stand-up comic / story-teller. When we heard he was coming back to the area, we immediately purchased our tickets (almost 6 months ago). We even convinced good friends to plan a trip and come down from Long Island to see him. Well... let me start out by saying that we did have a good time, don't get me wrong. It's just that it never reached the level of enjoyment that last year's show achieved. The band was just OK, and a little loud for the theater size. Sad to say that Colin was also totally upstaged by his backup singer / dancer. It was really overkill! (pardon the pun). I mean to the point of where it was totally distracting. It was worse then just the dancing, she was acting out words and phrases from every song, while jumping and swirling all around (like a child on a sugar high). You could tell she was basically making it up on the fly. This went on for just about every single song. If we had never see last years show, I would have probably given this review 4 stars. If we had never seen last years show, we would have never known just how good a Colin Hay concert can be when you see him with just his guitar. Regardless, if you ever get a chance, I still say go see him. The man is incredible !!!

Last year I saw Colin in Ft Lauderdale doing his solo acoustic show. He did more post Men at Work songs in that show, but it was still very enjoyable. I was pleasantly surprised when there was a full band accompaniment for this show. With a full band, he delved deeper into the Men at Work songbook and played not just the hits, but also many songs that were not hits. Considering I was just a kid when Men at Work was at their peak and never got to see them in concert, it was quite a treat to hear these songs live finally. Add Colin's great sense of humor, and story telling, in a small intimate venue...makes for a very enjoyable evening.

I saw Colin Hay one year ago at Parker Playhouse. He was solo and he was fantastic. When I walked into the Amaturo Theater, I was excited to see that he was playing with a band. Although the band was average, Colin Hay was his brilliant self. My main issue was the backup singer that was bouncing around the stage like a lunatic throughout the show, Unfortunately I was sitting OrchR so she was right in front of me. Every time I tried to look away, my eyes were drawn back to her. She was so distracting and she was awful. I think her mic was off most of the time because you couldn't hear her which made me wonder why she was even on the stage. My other issue was that she blocked my view of the drummer the entire show.

Colin Hay is an amazing singer/song writer who blends some of his obvious hits with Men @ Work with his tremendous body of solo work. His songs tell wonderful stories and he is among the best acoustic guitar players I have ever seen. But he so much more than that. He is a gifted story teller, philosopher and comedian. Colin played the Wilbur Theatre last night to a wonderful crowd. (sans the rude yelling out idiots) Both music and stand up comedy were equally great. What a voice! Over the years, vocalists can lose a bit on the scale, but Colin's pitch and stamina were certainly something to marvel. Ageless, and steadfast, He is a true entertainer with impeccable standards. This was a solo acoustic show (my favorite kind of Colin Hay show) and, as always, it was amazing. Hay's voice was strong and rich and his guitar playing was impeccable. Sure, he could have done twice as many songs, maybe even more, if he didn't talk but the hilarious and heartwarming stories are a huge part of the reason I keep going back time after time to see him. There has never been an artist whose live shows I've recommended as highly as Colin Hay's. Even if you don't particularly like his music, it's worth the price of the ticket for the stories.

Colin is not only a gifted musician, singer, and song writer, but he is also a wonderful story teller. He kept the audience entertained between songs with jokes and played wonderful acoustic renditions of both his Men At Work hits and his solo stuff. I ve now been to double digit Colin Hay shows, and he never disappoints. From anecdotes about growing up in Scotland/Australia to taking about how a particular song came to be, he is a consummate storyteller. The venue (Taft Theater) is typically a great place for a show, but for whatever reason the staff elected to not turn on the heat. (It never did warm up in there.) That said Colin could pay the DMV and still be singing along with a smile on my face.

A great performance of his old and new material. The men at work songs were great. His tale about growing up protestant in a blue jacket, and walking past the catholic school where they wore red jackets was powerful. "Same God, different jackets." A very funny singer songwriter, in the Irish / Scottish story telling style. Lots of subtle positive messages about aging, checkups, drugs, religion and death.

In my humble opinion, possibly the worlds most under rated songwriter/performer. Every song was emotionally moving, I laughed, I cried... Pure Theater ... Why this man dosen't have a one man show on Broadway is beyond me. His wit and humor is top notch. I've laughed less at the performances of Internationally famous Comedians. He did an almost 2 hour long acoustic set, and every second was pure entertainment. He even made us laugh when he was pausing for a drink of water. After the show he met the audience in the foyer for autographs .... I will be returning to see COLIN HAY perform every chance I get. Bravo Mr Hay. BRAVO !!!

Collin has a unique sound and personality, both enjoyable. The downfall was the theme of songs as the night went on - they got increasingly more and more depressing. I'm all about expressing 'real life' and at the same time, being inspiring and uplifting whenever possible. We left the show feeling down and sad, rather than touched and inspired.

Over thirty years later Colin Hay only improves like a good wine. His concert was amazing and his stage presence and rapport with the audience the best of any musician I have seen. I hope that he returns to Florida very soon as I absolutely loved the show and look forward to seeing him soon and not waiting so long next time.

I've seen Colin Hay four or five times since the early 2000s. His shows have always been enjoyable as his songwriting, singing, playing and witticisms skills are beyond compare. This was my most recent experience (a few nights ago). He voice is perfect and his playing is even better as he's matured. I always enjoy his stories and this experience was no exception. He's personal, endearing and funny! Just a terrific show! Enjoy!

Colin was absolutely fabulous! His 2 hour show combined his wonderful and ageless singing voice with his satirical wit. He mixed his classic hits and new releases from Next Year People in perfect balance. His stories in between songs were funny and poignant. The crowd was appreciative and gave him two standing ovations. We all had a great time.

Excellent show..... Colin is an amazing guitar player with a voice that gets better with age. He sprinkles in his comedic stories of life, love and career to make for a hugely entertaining show. Second time I've seen him solo and will see him again on the next tour.

Colin Hay plays a mean guitar, sings like a star, and is as funny as hell. The man put on the most unique and incredibly entertaining one-man show I've seen, and at 67 I've seen plenty. The four people in my party enjoyed the show as much, if not more than I did.

Colin Hay is invited to our dinner table any time. His wit, his charm, his honesty. What a treasure. I love how he can sing high notes, but it doesn't sound like a traditional falsetto. It sounds like his normal voice, just higher. That richness stays intact. We were transfixed with this talented guy and his guitars. No laser light show. Just timeless talent.

Not only is Colin Hay a talented singer and song writer, but he is also one of the best stand-up comedians I have ever seen. His laugh a minute repertoire almost made me forget I was there to hear him sing. Before I knew it two hours had passed and the show was over, leaving the audience wanting more. He played three big hits from Men at Work, "Down Under", "Who Can it be Now" and "Overkill"; which had the crowd cheering, however, the audience was also interested in hearing his solo songs which are just as good, if not better than, the music he played with Men at Work. His soulful renditions of "Waiting for My Real Life to Begin" and "Dear Father" were definitely worth the $40 I spent. I am very much looking forward to seeing Colin when he comes back again.

As with all former lead singers who go out on their own, expect to hear more songs from their Solo music rather than their former bands... The show was all CH and only 1 M@W song.. Told stories and talked alot. Never got the crowd into a groove... My friends and I were disappointed at the mellow tone of the show and would have been easily converted if he sang Overkill (How do you not sing that?)

On its own, Colin's music can take you to a place in time with his moving lyrics. Seeing him in concert for the first time, I was absolutely amazed at what one person can do on a stage. With masterful guitar work and amazing lyrics, we were taken on a two plus hour journey through Colin Hay's life. His humorous take on life provided uncontrolled laughter most of the night. Although the 2 hours past quickly, the show never felt rushed. It was enjoyable to be at a show where every person didn't have a cell phone out and people who thought they would chat through the show were quickly quieted down by other concert members. The 1200 of us in attendance came to see and hear an artists life long work and Colin showed us just how amazing that work is.

I have seen Colin play before, and will see him again! His songs can be funny and moving. Some pull you into them like a good short story. His story telling and delivery are worth seeing even without the songs thrown in! He is also an amazing guitarist. Got to meet him after the show at the meet and greet. Even though we were the last ones in line he was gracious with his time and very engaging.

Great show, great night. Colin is a master moving between stories and songs that he ties together. Much of the material came from the new release Next Year People, but in a stripped down acoustic versions that are a nice take from the studio. I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a great song writer and performer. He won't let down.

Colin Hay is a wonderful musician - great guitar player with an amazing voice and a wonderful story teller. He had the audience laughing hysterically. His background pictures were beautiful and added a lot to the performance. Also Town Hall in NYC is a great place to see a show - very intimate and the sound is great. All and all a great evening - glad I went out to see him even though it was pouring in NYC that night.

His music is still amazing. His lyrics are often touching. Love his vocals and his guitar playing is exceptional. Town Hall is a great venue for him. Small and intimate. He is also quite the jokester with many funny tales to tell. Don't have to spend a lot of money to get great seats and see an exceptional show. Loved that he played for 2 plus hours with no intermission. Looking forward to hearing his new CD.

Seeing such a prolific songwriter "solo" is perhaps the most ideal way to see a performer and by far my favorite way to see an artist. With just a guitar and a voice, his songs were portrayed in their most natural state and the emotions and feelings conveyed were raw and unproduced. This raw emotion and feeling was evident in Colin's set. His story telling and song set ups along with some background video to add to the theme of the music was just right. As always, the sound at the Birchmere was exceptional. Having been a fan for many, many years, getting to finally see him perform was a joy. I hope to have the opportunity to do so again.

The show was perfect. Colin Hay 's voice sounded as natural & wonderful as does his recorded songs. He intertwined highly comedic anecdotes to illustrate the story behind each one which was both unexpected & totally awesome. He had about 3 different guitars he switches between to get the perfect sound for each song. He seemed perfectly comfortable as though he were performing for friends- just a truly great artist & performer. The Birchmere provided an intimate setting, just 500 people seated at tables (for eating), low lighting, and a screen behind Colin which showed different beautiful scenes & ambiances. The staff were friendly, courteous & efficient. The only thing I wish was different is that the crowd was a little more enthusiastic & not afraid to sing aloud & clap together- maybe we all hadn't had enough to drink!

This is the 4th time we have seen Colin Hay live and he never disappoints! This time he had a band performing with him so it made the whole performance even better than the prior concerts we have seen! Colin Hay is a Brilliant performer, very personable, a great band to back him up, and he makes us laugh with his dry sense of humor - a great night out and highly recommend it! Thank you - we will go again!

Loved Colin Hay's show... Colin Hay is a great story teller, funny and he still sounds amazing! Good mix of Accoustic songs but most of the music was with his band who were very good. I didn't like when Colin Hay allowed his band to sing their own song. The Latin guitar guy was fantastic but the girl Celina sang and it sounded like a bad cruise ship singer. She was entertaining to watch dance though. Overall it was a great intimate show and very entertaining

It truly pains me to right this review. And let me just say, it appears that if I had been lucky enough to have attended a Colin Hay concert just one month earlier when he was performing solo, I would be writing quite a different one. I had been lucky enough to attend an acoustic performance a few years ago and was utterly enthralled every second. You'd be hard pressed to find a bigger fan. I purchased our tickets 6 months ago. It was advertised as simply "Colin Hay" with no mention of a band at all. To see Mr. Hay on stage with his acoustic guitar, wit, and brilliantly honest lyrics, is something to behold. But it was not to be. He brought along a 5 piece band. Where to start. The acoustics in the intimate venue were excellent for Chris Trapper, the opening act, however, Mr. Hay's band was so loud, (especially the sax), that most of the songs were distorted...his distinct and amazing voice, drowned out much of the time. Then there was Cecelia Noel. Apparently she was determined to be the center of attention, dancing with excessive, almost manic enthusiasm while acting out the lyrics. i.e. when one of the verses mentioned "putting on lipstick", she literally, and with great exaggeration, put some on herself with an imaginary tube. To say she was distracting is an understatement. Why would he allow this you say? Well, she's his 27 year old wife, that's why. I know this all sounds rather mean-spirited but the disappointment from last night is still fresh in my mind. But after spending 3 hours total driving time, feeling like the show was misrepresented, by no mention of a band, spending $100 on tickets and to have put on long pants, (a funny reference from Colin Hay himself), I'm a bit peeved to say the least. I would have greatly appreciated a heads up like this before purchasing my tickets. All I can say is, if you get the chance to see the great Colin Hay's acoustic performance, drop everything and go. It will be something you will never forget. If there's mention of a band, save your money, time and long pants.
