Best Coast

Best Coast

In 2009, vocalist and guitarist Beth Cosentino and multi-instrumentalist Bobb Bruno started the band Best Coast as a love letter to surf rock and 1960s Southern California girl groups. According to Cosetino and Bruno, there's no doubt which coast is best -- it's the one that spawned such notable acts as The Beach Boys and Fleetwood Mac, and the band’s indie sound channels that West Coast vibe through their signature layers of distortion and reverb. Best Coast’s lo-fi debut album, Crazy for You, was a hit with critics, and through word of mouth, Internet buzz and a relentless tour schedule, it became a breakthrough commercial success. Best Coast’s sophomore effort, The Only Place, is cleaner and more polished, with the lo-fi garage replaced with a more lyrical pop sound.

Bethany sounds amazingggg live. I enjoyed Bleached more than The Lovely Bad Things though, they were still good. Not too hot indoors, waited outside for an hour and a half prior to door entry time. Nice venue, small, but it had a nice vibe.

Bethany Cosentino is the perfect woman, with the voice of an angel. Bobb Bruno and their drummer were flawless as well, and I couldn't discern a single mistake. Most of the people knew all the words, and I've never seen so many satisfied fans!! Bravo.

The music was good but the sound was muddy, distorted and terrible. The place was packed but the crowd just didn't seem to get into the show. Could it be because of the sound maybe? I would have rather seen them at a smaller venue. But I still love the music!

I mostly went for WAVVES but also wanted to check out Best Coast. WAVVES was fun, as expected, but frankly, in the future, I will probably not pay venue fees to go see them. They really seem like a band that should only play at backyard gigs and smelly holes in the wall places, which is not an insult because those can be very fun times. What I'm saying is, WAVVES really can't justify charging a lot of money for shows; but I guess it was Best Coast that made the price. WAVVES really is fun but I probably won't pay to go see them again. Also, I am not a huge fan of Best Coast. All their songs sounded the same to me and honestly, their performance quite bored me. The singer is a good singer and I give them props for being a hardworking band from LA and working their way up, but I will not go see them again.

I only caught the last song from the first band No Joy, so I cannot critique them. Wavves were next and were excellent despite technical difficulties with the microphone, cutting out the lead singer's vocals for a song and a half. They were high energy, friendly with the crowd and sounded live even better than on their albums. Best Coast ended the night on a girly note. I think Bethany had a cold as she coughed between songs. So, her voice was definitely lacking. They were decent enough, but Wavves definitely stole the show and should have been the headliners.

Solid performance by both bands. Wavves was very energetic and true to their sound but aren't very melodic. Best Coast played well though the lead guitar was mixed too quietly and their set fell into the same dragging tempo and mood.

Went to see Best Coast, Wavves, and No Joy on Wednesday. No Joy was really... interesting. Near the end it seemed as if the whole band suddenly experienced brain damage and was crawling on the floor for different reasons... Wavves sounded great! My only complaint was the moshing. I find it incredibly hard to enjoy the music when the weight of ten people is pushing you into more people. I would have enjoyed this a little (lot) more if it was 18+, because we all know the ones who start the mosh pits are the kids. Best Coast. This is the second time I've seen Best Coast. I love their sound, and you feel all that West Coast beach culture thrown out to you as Bethany sings. So great. Worth every penny and more. Oh yeah, and the security guard falsely accused me of smoking, and asked where the pipe was. Mad lame, I lost my position in the front.

Wavves were awesome! I had gone to the concert to see Best Coast but I was REALLY impressed with them! Seriously- the crowd was going crazy. They rocked. Best Coast was also really great. They sounded a little more 'stripped down' then they do on their album and I really enjoyed this.

ok, lemme start by saying that i love the best coast record, but despite this, i was super disappointed after seeing them live. i skipped wavves, as i'm not a fan, and now in retrospect, i kinda wish i skipped the show altogether. bethany's cute and has crafted some great retro-sounding gems on the album, but live, they were just terrible. the drummer makes meg white seem like john bonham by comparison, bobb ain't much to look at but he can at least play his instrument, and bethany...oh, bethany...again, easy on the eyes...great voice (live the overall sound reminded me of courtney love fronting throwing muses) , but it literally seemed like she picked up the guitar a few weeks ago. after about 15 minutes, every song sounded exactly the same as the last...boring...sloppy...sleepy. you could feel the crowd just progressively lose interest and i actually wound up leaving before the set was over, as i just couldn't really deal with it any more. this is the 2nd time in as many months that i've been severely disappointed seeing a band LIVE that i really dig on record (i'm looking at you Freelance Whales...). what a bummer.

Wavves rocked. Very tight and focused. Loved the new songs and glad they didn't play that lame duet with Bethany from Best Coast. Love Best Coast's album, but live they were mediocre at best. Singer's voice just didn't cut it - either she was having a bad day, a cold or maybe there were lots of studio tricks; also missed the background vocals that are on the album. No Joy. Good name - they seemed joyless. Music has some possibilities, but they need to turn down the guitar distortion and turn up the vocals to make it at least a little accessible - even Sonic Youth knew that early on...

Had an enjoyable evening with Sonny and the Sunsets and Best Coast. I was not disappointed!! I love Sonny and the Sunsets, they play kind of a retro Beach Boy sound with a modern flair. Death Cream will always be my favorite song that they play. Best Coast. They were good but my main criticism of them is they sound like a lot of bands I have heard. They remind me of one of my favorite bands of old - Lone Justice. They have that Southern California sound but I will suggest that they find their own sound and then they will stick out more as being original. I liked the warm up band better than the main band due to the uniqueness of the Sonny And the Sunsets sound. It was a fun night, enjoyed by all!!

Bethany Cosentino gave a vocal performance unlike any other I've seen in a long time. I've seen close to 50 shows, including McCartney, Clapton, Frampton, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Pearl Jam, and her vocals were easily among the best I've ever heard live. Super catchy tunes, cheap tickets, a superb little California band. I can't wait until they get big, she absolutely deserves this with the amount of talent she has.

Let's get things out in the open so everyone understands the experience. Show was sold out, hence it was packed. Not a problem for someone who loves Best Coast and will endure any inconvenience for the purpose of good music. DIIV came out right on time, the kids were pretty good, interesting and different. Those Darlins..... not the biggest fan... sorry! A few of their songs were ok, but for the most part they made me yawn. Then the moment came- I was standing in the bar area because I am an average 5'4 chick which unfortunately sucks when attending concerts because everyone over 5'9 decided to stand in front of me. Needless to say, I had a great spot. Bethany Cosentino was spot on, cool chick with great songs. I was happy! And to treat us with a Fleetwood Mac cover (Storm) was beautiful. Lighting was stellar, went with the songs perfectly. Cheap drinks. So pretty much it was a great experience. Loved Terminal 5!

The show itself was amazing. The artists played killer music, they were interactive and real with the audience, and the atmosphere was really great. I love the Regency Ballroom because the stage is so close to the audience that you feel at one with the show. Its also nice that there is an upstairs area where there is actual seating if wanted. The only fault is that there was a lot of craziness in within the crowd, but if you're gonna go se Wavves and Best Coast it should be expected. Loved the show!

i am a huge fan of both of these bands but i must say i was quite underwhelmed by their show at the regency ballroom. wavves definitely brought the energy and had a pretty good set, but best coast was honestly a mess. no stage presence at all, at one point she failed to play one of her utterly simple guitar parts and apologized simply with "i smoked too much marijuana today." the crowd gave a cheer, but i have to wonder if anyone else felt a little ripped off... the beauty of best coast is the simple effortlessness, this was a bit painful. by the end of the encoreless set i was ready to sleep.

Waaves was less distinctive than I expected...many songs sounded the same. Seemed like the band was not getting along that well. Best Coast was stoned...as expected. Screwed up set list and had a couple of false starts, but eventually got into the groove. Regency is a terrific venue...well run and friendly staff. They even tidy up the bathrooms during the show. Drinks were very pricy, though.

This was one show I'll never forget. The energy was electric... Wavves and Best Coast seemed excited to be playing at home in LA and the vibes reverberated into the crowd. The sound was great... no muffled vocals, although there was some weird radio feedback coming from Bethany's amp or mike. I loved how each band didn't need an elaborate set to play a high energy, exciting show. It was as raw as it comes, but I wouldn't have had it any other way. I'm looking forward to seeing Best Coast again at Coachella.

Wavves rocked the house. Their set was tight and relentless. Best Coast sounded muddy and out of tune. Either they did no sound check, their sound guy had taken fourteen bottles of antihistamine, or they just aren't good live. You couldn't tell anything apart. It all sounded like mush. Hunx was like the offspring of the Cramps and the Sex Pistols playing Doo Wop in the background of A John Waters movie. If it was 1975 they would have been revolutionary.

I walked in late, and actually thought Wavves was the opening act, as they didn't seem to really "own" the stage. Best Coast was not as pumped as the last time I saw them in NYC 3 years ago, at Barclay's as Green Day's opener. However, both bands sounded great, as they're all talented performers and artists, and I enjoyed the show overall. Maybe next tour shouldn't be one show/one city every night -- they're not 23 anymore, ha ha!

Waiting in line for the show to start and the line to get into Candibar couldn't understand/wouldn't heed the directions given by the bouncer. Things started to get tense as very few people in that line could understand English. The bouncer kept telling the line to move in a little bit because people on the sidewalk couldn't get through, but they wouldn't move. Surprisingly, the punk kids going to Summer is Forever II could follow directions and were courteous to the club staff. The wait for the opener to start wasn't too long, and Cherry Glazerr was an excellent show. Not too rowdy in the crowd, which is to be expected from an opening band. All their songs were well received by the crowd, and they said our audience was "way better than last night's audience." Wavves came on next after about a half hour wait. Sail to the Sun was the first song they played. Sounded just like the studio version, very clean and crisp sound, especially in the front row where I was. Crowdsurfing was very common during Wavves' set, even encouraged. Wavves was stretched for time, so they blew through the rest of their set and it was over. Best Coast came out after another half hour wait. Not as good as Wavves, with only a couple songs I really enjoyed. Their frontwoman was upset with the security staff because they were having a small side conversation while one of their songs was playing, which I thought was a bit of an overreaction. After a couple songs she apologized for calling out the staff, saying that she was sick and might have been "a bit of a bitch." I could understand her frustration. At one point I asked a bouncer how many songs were left and he said 11, which I thought was a monstrous set. It dragged on a little long, but otherwise it was a good set. Leaving the joint was easy enough, as there was plenty of parking just across the street. My feet hurt like hell but the show was rewarding enough for me not to care.

Solid mix from the DJ, although a bit mellowing; I'd rather he kept the energy steady. Lovely Bad Things had infectious and rousing energy that more than made up for an off performance the night before. Bleached just sort of played through its set, not building off of Lovely Bad Things' excitement, but also not bringing down the energy that was already there. Best Coast's front woman gave off angsty energy, making me think she felt like she'd rather be somewhere else besides on stage that night, like she was annoyed by her fans, not appreciative of them, regardless of what her words said.

Best Coast - with a drummer & a bass/guitar player had a great sound. Beth's voice was strong and clear. The venue was clean. The other fans were decent as well. It was mostly a younger female audiance that seem to know the words to most of the songs and were singing along. Most of the "seating options" were actually standing. I don't think the balcony was open for but a select few. We enjoyed standing near the stage. Rock n roll is still around and Best Coast is a great example of a newer band that really can rock. Oh and the price of the tickets was decent.

ive been a fan of best coast for a few years so I thought this was a great time with their recent new album to come out and support. Starting the night was the band Chealse Wolfe, musically they have what it takes to flesh out into an awesome band, their set has a dream like state, haunting you while having big, dark melodies remenescent of joy division. although on stage they seemed as though they didnt even want to be there. beast coast is lively and took charge of the night with an effective balance of sound and performance. their lyrics are thoughtful regarding loneliness, weed and lack of the one they love fit perfectly with their slightly upbeat sound making for an interesting cocktail. awesome band!! also to note I fell in love with bethany, shes gorgeous

Best Coast, was such a delightful show to watch! Though I think the venue at the Fox Theater in Oakland may have been a tad too big for them. Needless to say, in a world flooded by synth hip hop, and overly promoted teen commercial acts. The Best Coast show and music, with the subject of their songs concentrating on teen love, crushes and bubble gum heartache are an amazing hark back to the garage pop rock bands of the mid 60s in CA.

each band kicked ass. very pleased and surprised by the opening acts. Those Darlins truely impressed me. Amazing. Best Coast came out after and rocked the house. Their encore was powerful.

Saw Best Coast at the Orion Music and More fest in Atlantic City. Didnt enjoy them at all. They actually cut their set 15 minutes short when she actually talked about taking a sh#$.....After trying to quote James Hetfield in all the wrong ways.
