Fiona Apple

Raw, emotional and entrancing, singer-songwriter and pianist Fiona Apple knows how to project her feelings onto an adoring audience so that each fan feels as if he or she is being directly sung to, as Apple did in her most recent tour on the East Coast in fall of 2013. Her concerts are marked by their intimacy, with the singer cooing in her contralto voice almost to herself, as if no one else was there. This is in stark contrast to her extremely reclusive public persona. Reticent to engage in interviews and effectively sequestered between albums and tours, Apple still coaxes devotion from her legions who drift along enchanted by her siren songs of love, loss, sleeplessness and self-image.

I saw Fiona last year in Red Bank and Blake Mills opened for her playing a few sets and singing and I was thinking what a waste of money. Then Fiona came out and it was just through the roof from there. I had never seen her before but was blown away by the time the night was over. As for Monday night's concert it was a compilation of both Fiona and Blake. His uneven guitar playing helped make a slow night go slower. So disappointed that for the first time in my life I walked out of a concert and there was only about ten minutes left at the time. She is a fabulous performer as a headliner but he doesn't bring anything to the table as a front man and is served best to be a studio musician.

Fiona was incredible. She definitely has a few screws loose, but that's what makes her so amazing. Her guitarist was rude, but overall a great show.

I have waited for a long time for a chance to see Fiona. I drove a long way to see this show. Standing outside in the cold was to be expected but the venue itself left much to be desired. The sound was awful in a big, echoey old theater that was set up to be a dance bar - not a concert venue. Nasty place that I would never go to again. The opening act was terrible. When Fiona finally came out she was good, despite the fact it was hard to see or hear her. I was disappointed though to pay a pretty hefty ticket price to see a show that lasted LESS THAN AN HOUR!!! I understand that performing is tough on artists and I am perfectly OK with them taking a break to rest and recover but it seems to me that an artist should expect to play a little more than an hour when fans travel to see them. What wasted unconditional love On somebody Who doesn't believe in the stuff Oh, well

Positives: Fiona sounded great. She played a nice selection from all 3 albums, plus some new material and covers. Overall really enjoyable Negatives: Show was scheduled for 8PM with no opening act. Around 8:45 her guitarist came out and did a 25 minute set of original material which wasn't very good. Fiona finally emerged around 9:45 and played until about 10:25 with no encore. The length of the set was less than half of the wait time.

Great show. The lighting reminded me of a graphic equalizer. Too bad she did not do an encore - the audience was engaged... Disappointing not to see her come back out. I understand she did not want to do "Criminal" - maybe the whole arrest thing... But would have been nice to hear Sullen Girl or Carrion as an encore.

Fiona Apple rocked the house! Her raspy voice evokes the emotion of every lyric with so much honesty and passion. She danced, sang, and played the piano with her heart on her sleeve. It was like watching a mad painter paint a masterpiece in front of my eyes. My ears are still wanting for more. She at one point thanked us all for the love and energy. She said, "A lot of "us" don't take time to tell you just how much you really mean to us, thank you. I could not do this without you." Her band is incredible and just as amazing. I will totally she her preform again if she is ever in TX or Winstar again.

Blake Mills was spectacular! I wish the Nashville crowd had been a little quieter. In the row in front were an old couple who had brought cushions to the pew seating. Fiona Apple is just freaking amazing to watch. She takes heart on sleeve to a new level of insides on outside and she is breathtaking and an amazing talent. After having bathed in the Idler Wheel for a few weeks when this concert was attended the line I really wanted to see her perform was the "Seek me out" verse from Valentine. My jaw was on the floor the whole time. 2nd show. Last one was at the Paramount Theater in Denver.

Though not a huge fan...I thought it would be a great evening of music to go to a Fiona Apple concert at the Greek. We were right. The evening was really great (we were glad we had dinner prior to arriving as the food choices are very limited at the Greek) we liked the $22 wine option, and the bathrooms are clean! Fiona's voice is still mesmerizing. My friend was very disturbed by Fiona's gaunt appearance. From our seats she looked like a skeleton. But her voice is still emotional and different and we were happy to have attended.

I have been a fan of Fiona Apple for years and I finally had the chance to see her live. Fiona is a musical genius!! Fiona reinvented each one of her songs. I was expecting a casual and laid back performance but she rocked the house down. Fiona opened with a rocking performance of "Fast as You Can." Fiona carried on an amazing 90 minute performance. Fiona would get so much into her music that she would scream and even lay on the floor. I have to admit it was a very emotional performance, and you can really tell she puts everything she has into her music! I would love to see her again. I have to admit it is great to know there are still "real" artists out there. I will be a Fiona fan for the rest of my life! Thanks for such a great show!!!

Fantastic show. The opening act is members of her band-gives them an opportunity to shine, and then Fiona comes on and absolutely rocks. Sound was great and her voice very strong. She looks fantastic and puts much energy in her show. She sang hits from all her older albums as well as the new one and it was a great 1 hour and 35 minute show. I liked how she told us she didn't do the encore walk off thing and then launched into the final song without leaving the stage. There are limited edition posters for sale and the day's allotment was sold out before the show started. It's clear the 7 year wait for her new cd was worth it-hope there is another sooner than that.

Have been a huge fan of Fiona Apple since the 90s. I was even at the concert where she walked off stage in NYC. So it made me very sad to see her struggling on stage. Her voice is still strong but she looked visibly uncomfortable. At the end, she skipped having a traditional "encore" and just ran off the stage in a hurry. That was after crawling into a fetal position next to the drummer during "Criminal". I have no idea what her problems are, but I hope she gets help because she is an unbelievable talent.

Best concert I've ever been to. Fiona was amazingly energetic. When she plays the piano my heart beats as if i just ran track. I read some ofthe other reviews yes the opening act was a bit long. But she played 1.5hrs straight. No costum changes and no intermission to waste time.

Let me say first, I love Fiona Apple and her music. I've been listening to her for almost 14 years now and would consider her one of my favorite musicians. So when I heard she was coming to Berkeley, I made sure to be online to buy tickets the minute they became available. Apparently, buying tickets on ticketmaster will not assure you the "best seats available", because those are reserved for purchaser's at the venue. However, this minor setback would not have prevented my good time had Fiona's performance been more vibrant. It was very disappointing. I understand, Fiona doesn't know how to interact with a crowd. Maybe she's tired of playing songs off of the new album. Maybe Blake Mills was more important a focal point than the audience from Fiona's perspective. Either way, all of these things made me feel like I was watching a stranger sing along with her buddy on stage to songs that no one had heard of. I don't know if Fiona realizes that her fans know all the lyrics to her songs, and they enjoy singing along to them. That's why they bought the $60 tickets- to see her perform these songs that they've fallen in love with. I left the hall feeling downtrodden, stunned and thinking, "this can't be it...." but it was. Poor show Fiona, and I really didn't think it possible for YOU to disappoint me...

Of the 100+ concerts I have been to in my lifetime, this is literally the only one I have ever walked out of before it was done. Blake Mills is a phenomenal guitar player, but he really should stick to guitar only -- his epic blues ballads were coma-inducing. I can't imagine what inspired this double-bill, but given their completely different musical/artistic styles, it simply did not work. Aside from my disappointment with Mills, I also found Fiona's performance to be largely uninspired. I have seen her several times in the past and always thoroughly enjoyed her performances, but this time she clearly was not "feeling it." At one point, she even made a snide comment to the effect of "well we only have 4 shows left anyway" ...in other words, she was already mentally checked out, and that attitude shone through in her performance. The one bright spot of her performance was her cover of "It's Only Make Believe" by Conway Twitty -- which was absolutely sensational. However, that alone was not enough to make up for the complete lack of fervor throughout the rest of the show. All in all, a huge disappointment.

7:30 start time, no opening act, started after 8:30 Ended by 10:00pm Too short for the money- Also it appears she is dating Blake Mills and to many duets/too much of Mills. I know they both shared the marque, but lets face it no one was there to see Blake Mills. The songs Fiona performed were wonderful, and I enjoyed the different style they were presented in compared with the tour earlier in the year. Fiona is awesome. But lets say 60% Fiona, 40% duets and Mills. For less than 1 hour of Apple for the money I was disappointed. Hope she is solo next time!

Having been fortunate to see Fiona perform in 2012 both at the Music Hall of Williamsburg show in March and again in October at Terminal 5, this show was vastly different. The past shows were proper Fiona shows. This show added Blake Mills, who previously opened for Fiona in 2012, and now joined her as headliner. Granted, he is a brilliant guitarist however Fiona wooed the crowd without even trying to. My only frustration was that when Fiona spoke between songs, she was inaudible which grew increasingly annoying to sit through with no remedy. Let's be honest, we all paid good money to experience Fiona Apple and although her voice was perfectly clear with each song, speaking was a different story. Simply put, if expect a show that is all Fiona - this is not the show for you! Although she plays some of her songs, a lot is missing. However, if you appreciate first rate music, for music's sake, this show is worth seeing.

Scene: stage set as if we were in a giant living room/recording studio Cast: wonderful musicians including one who looks emotionally and physically fragile Terms: No photographs (so you will not see any on this review) which in the end was actually a good thing Result: a live experience that is an absolute must for Fiona Apple fans, but those who might have thought you'd get the catchy 90's pop she put out back then, well you will be sorely disappointed

He's a great musician but when it comes to singing, he's just so-so. Especially when you hear Fiona's unforgettable voice. You can't help but compare and wonder why someone who's less remarkable is sharing this show equally with her. Are they dating, is what me and my friends were wondering. As in, is that why he's sharing the shows with her? I did like his song writing and he's great on all the instruments he played, but there's something country-western about his singing and his voice just sounds like sooo many others you've heard before. However, Fiona has a truly unique voice that couldn't be mistaken for anyone else and that's what you really want to hear in this show.

Her voice was great. However i'm not completely sold on her new album. She came through with "I'll Know" at the end which was great. Blake had his own stuff which was good but when he played her stuff I think his guitar skills aren't quite as fluid. Also, he put his own spin on her music and I wasn't crazy with that spin.

Not a show to see live at all. Fiona's albums are incredible but don't translate well to her live playing. Hard to understand what they are singing, the banter was awkward and uncomfortable and the songs went on much longer than necessary. A regrettable performance.

Was really looking forward to the show. Last time I had seen her was back around 2006 or 2007 and she was excellent. This show at the Beacon Theatre was very different. She was absolutely atrocious. She seemed out of it, was slurring her words in between songs, and was generally indifferent during the songs. It made for an awkward and disappointing show. You could tell the rest of the band felt the same. Blake Mills tried to hold it together and you can tell he's talented, but he couldn't carry the show. Overall, bad concert. I hope Fiona pull herself together. She's so talented, but this performance left me feeling ripped off.

The show started over an hour after its "starting promptly, no opening act" time. The sound was so bad I wondered if the FOH engineer was even at the show. Guitars earsplittingly loud, bass and drums inaudible except for the dreaded "kick of doom". Frequent feedback. Fiona was in good voice and seemed to be having a good time. I am a big fan of the latest album, which most of her songs were from. But the Blake Mills songs were not a good match -- filler, really. Wanky blooze-rock. A waste of my money and my precious time.

First off, nobody wants to hear Blake Mills, but the worst part is she completely ignores all the material from her earlier cd's. No shadowboxer, tymps, extraordinary machine, etc. The girl has finally gone all the way over the edge. Don't get me wrong I like her new stuff , but its like Elton John not playing Rocket Man or Levon. You have to play at least a couple of your fans favorites. I will never pay to see her again.

Fiona and Blake performed together, taking turns with each other's songs. They played for 1 1/2 hours, but did not do an encore. I wasn't interested in Blake, so the concert ended up being sort of disappointing. On a side note, it was held in a symphony concert hall, so the sound was amazing but the venue was clearly not used to hosting concerts--there was only one bar with a long line and limited options aside from very expensive wine and mixed drinks, the ushers seemed off-put by the energy and rowdiness of the crowd.

Fiona's voice is like a gateway drug to some far off land where sultry sirens lull you to sleep before they eat you raw. It's powerful and intoxicating, perhaps even moreso coming from the frame of a famine victim. But I, and certainly everyone at the sold-out Disney Concert Hall, were entralled none-the-less. Fiona is an odd duck, wandering around the stage in a state much like a homeless lady searching through the trash for something to bang for percussion, but its with this that lay her enduring quality. Much like her body, she endures and delivers time after time, never giving the audence anything but her all. She played a set almost completely without any of her known hits, instead opting to play tracks she has never played for a live audence before, including a riveting , searing version of oddball "Idler" track "Regret" with its wonderful "ive run out of white doves feathers to soak up the hot piss that comes from your mouth every time you address me" line. She played a great new song, and also included her recent "Dull tool" track from the "This is 40" soundtrack. It was a setlist for her hardcore fans, one of which I most assuredly am, and it was most appriciated even if the audence seemed at times to grow restless. I am so greatful shes here giving us this amazing music.

I was hoping to see a great show as this was my first time seeing Fiona live. I love her hit songs and her voice. Well, this show sucked. She came on an hour late and did not sing one hit song. I'm a huge Fiona Apple fan and I was under the impression that Blake Mills was just her opening act, not that they would be playing together as a band, so I was really disappointed that I didn't get to hear that many Fiona Apple songs. They pretty much alternated songs, one of hers then one of his, so there were a lot of Blake Mills' songs. I think Fiona is an amazing artist and Mills is pretty average, so not only was it not a good match in my opinion, it was also disappointing to hear so much of his music when I really came to see her. I have seen some good reviews of this show, but for those that are hoping to hear a lot of Fiona Apple songs, I don't think this is the show for you.

I would give 10 stars to Fiona. This is the third time I've had the pleasure of going to one of her concerts. She sings from her soul, her voice is beautiful and this time she played the piano more, so that was awesome. I didn't like Blake Mills at all. It seems he wants to be the center of attention and shine more than Fiona and the rest of the band. The rest of the band was great. His guitar and microphone were louder than all the instruments and voices. I don't think he gets her music at all, and he's not a good guitar player. This is the first time I don't like a guitar player (guitar is my favorite instrument). He was singing louder than her on the duet, just basically trying to outshine everybody. I wish Fiona will pair up with a band like Pearl and the Beard next time. I saw her with Nickel Creek and it was amazing.

Fiona's voice is flawless. I arrived 45 minutes late, so I'm not sure what I missed. It seemed that the show may have been delayed, which was lucky for me. The set list was organized so that Fiona sang a song or two, and then Blake Mills sang a song. It went back and forth like this until the end of the concert. Fiona and Blake inserted a few funny comments between songs. I didn't like how it ended with Blake saying 'that was our last song' and Fiona dashing off stage. There wasn't a chance for an encore- bit disappointing. Otherwise, I was happy to be seeing one of my favorite singers perform for the first time!

There seemed to be some confusion as to when the show started. Tickets said 7:30pm, but posts on Facebook from her page said 8:00pm. The show started around 8:30, so depending on what was the actual start time depends on whether or not we waited too long. They performed together, there wasn't an opening act. I was mostly interested in seeing Fiona Apple perform. She performed a few of her songs and some new ones as well that haven't been released yet. As for Blake Mills, he was alright. They performed some songs solo and did some duets, as well. The sound seemed to be off a bit. In the beginning the bass drum was really loud and when Blake Mills played, his guitar was often too loud. Overall, I enjoyed the show. It was different and not what I had expected!

Liberty Hall is a great/intimate venue. Perfect for a Fiona Apple show. Could have used a few more "oldies but goodies" - stuff the crowd can sing along with. But the new stuff I'd never heard before (mainly Blake Mills' stuff)was very interesting and the group's performance was entertaining.

We went to the show with my friends to see and listen to Fiona Apple. Unfortunately, Blake Mills was playing every third song and his guitar solo/fade out lasted minutes. The show would've been more enjoyable if Blake either acts as an opening singer and let Fiona sing her songs entirely; or should've played 2-3 songs max and let Fiona sing for the rest of the time. The way it was set up made the show less enjoyable. We're glad we didn't pay more than the $57.00. We would've been very upset if we would've bought a ticket for $200...

I would have preferred more popular songs / tunes from Fiona and Blake. It may just be me however! Nevertheless, the best part of the concert was Fiona's voice, which was very beautiful, but was not always easy to follow with the words of her songs somewhat difficult to understand. The concert was 30 minutes late in starting which was disappointing, and no encore was also disappointing... Lastly, a few people left before the concert finished...

This was a surprise and a wonder on many levels... Fiona and Blake complimented each other throughout. Having seen Fiona several times she seemed relaxed and in her amazing, quirky groove. Blake played with genius and calm support and great songwriting as well. Wow! The Boettcher Hall was acoustically distracting for the first few songs but the sound engineer finally got it dialed in. Fiona plays a a few classic songs, but more material that is more recent. Awesome to hear her sing! Blake Mills also sang and played his songs - was hoping for an "only Fiona" concert... :/

I have always loved fionnaand I her work is amazing but I felt like the concert was very stiff and I was upset that she didn't play any of her old songs -2. BlakeMills did not compliment her music style

Both Fiona and Blake played 12 songs together. That is a very short show! Although they did a great job at the few songs they played, I just feel like I got ripped off for paying so much for only a twelve song show (including the "opening act").

I've been a Fiona Apple fan ever since she hit the scene. I've been to her concerts twice before and loved them - she was quirky but the music was amazing. I left this concert after 5 songs. She started an hour late, then proceeded to do her whole set with her opening act, alternating whose songs they were doing. Fine, but the opening act was miserable - he couldn't sing and mostly cranked up the reverb on his guitar so when Fiona did sing, we couldn't hear it. When we could hear her, she was either slurring her words or just yelling. She appeared a couple of times to fall asleep, draped over a huge bass drum that she would sporadically play. We should all have been refunded our ticket money - she was in no condition to perform.

I really tried to give them the benefit ofthe doubt, but the performance was a major let down and a waste of time/money. The sound was terrible as it swung from extreme softness to full throated caterwhaling that was often off key. I liked Mills' songs and guitar work but those also tended to devolve. I expected Fiona to be out there, but her voice was scratchy and lacked the beauty that I have come to love about it. To top it off she just didn't seem to care if the show was any good. The song from This is 40 soundtrack with the repetitive lyrics and screaming "kiss when you kiss, f$&k when you f-/$&...." was really the last straw and we left at that point. Bottom line: I'm ok with paying to come see you do "whatever you want", but when it appears you're not really trying (and definitely not rehearsing or doing a sound check) I just can't accept that type of disrespect. I will not be paying money to see Fiona again.

If you enjoy Fiona Apple, you HAVE to see her live. She is unparalleled. If you're familiar with the level of honesty she brings to her music, you know that she's not the type to put on an act for the sake of a "show." Instead, she keeps it brutally, beautifully real. To watch her perform a song is to watch her re-experience every emotion she must have felt while writing it. The musicians who back her keep things loose, letting Fiona do anything she wants. The result is dazzling, harrowing, brilliant, and raw. Fiona is truly an extraordinary machine, perfect in her imperfections. If you ever have the chance to see a live performance, do yourself a favor and buy a freaking ticket!

It is amazing that such a petite woman can possess that much power and emotion. The show was amazing with top notch vocals and a great backing band.

Sadly,Pittsburgh was her last U.S. tour date and I really hope she doesn't go back into hiding for years, but instead has lots of creativity spewing out if her she'll be back on the road soon promoting a new album! She's truly an Amazing artist!

The show didn't start until 10pm. I got there at 9pm. The opening act was so depressing he made me want to drink. Fiona's voice was not so great that night. Maybe she was under the weather I don't know. But it was not what I expected. Her voice cracked in a few of her songs and she just seemed to not care. The audience members were obnoxious one person kept screaming her name another got kicked out by security. The guy that sat next to me smelled like grease, alcohol and smoke. Not impressed.

Fiona was awesome! She did many songs off of When the Pawn and the new album. It was so great to see Fiona in concert again. Thanks Fiona for a great show!

The sound control person was terrible...or the equipment...not sure which...but the bass mix and entire band in general was drowning out fiona's voice...and I couldn't make out 99% of her words...which unfortunately are amazing and really make her songs....and I really really wanted to make them out... I brought my little sister who has no exposure to fiona and I truly believe that she got a very unfair introduction. She had no clue what fiona was singing about... The cover lasted way too long with a very strange long intermission...it put up all to sleep and didn't get us pumped up for fiona's show at all... I love fiona apple. I grew up with her. She is a clever songwriter and has a unique voice that has changed over the years. She has always been wise beyond her years. I would recommend anyone to see her perform live, but I was disappointed in this venue...

What an incredible performance by Fiona and her band. All the musicians were top notch, and the set list was a nice combination of all her albums. The venue was really cool, and the sound and lighting was perfect. I would have liked an encore, just because I wanted to hear more!

Fiona's band opened for her for a little less than 45 minutes. The music they played was not my favorite and at times was not good at all. The crowd didn't seem to be into it either (lots of talking.) Fiona finally came out with no intro or words for the crowd. She performed immediately and did about a dozen songs. As quickly as she began, she ended with a quick "I love you" and walked off the stage. No encore...

Saw Fiona Apple for the first time and it was in Atlantic City... such a weird weird little city. Other than the long electric guitar set before Fiona came on stage, the show was perfect. Fiona was on fire and sounded great!

I loved the show. My problem was how could you not do your number one selling single..."Criminal" and not give us at least one song for an encore for what was a very enthusiastic crowd? Other than that...she sounded great with a good show not withstanding the above!

Fiona Apple was absolutely horrible. She was completely stoned and at one point forgot the words. Our group of 4 was underwhelmed and we left early.

the best concert i've been too. Her songs have more emotional impact when seeing them performed live. It was a simple stage setup but she does't need any theatrics. I love how she improvises her songs!

Fiona is very quirky indeed. Offbeat, very interested show where she showcased her new songs wonderfully. I honestly was not crazy about the new album when I first heard it, but hearing the material live got me much more interested in it. She's a total original - has tremendous musicality. Awesome band - the guitarist in particular is one of the best players I've heard in years.

Fiona Apple was great. The songs were made even better by new interesting arrangements. Her voice was phenomenal, her spastic dancing was amazing. The crowd was atrocious. I have been to Terminal 5 many many times and I have never been pushed and shoved and jostled as much as I was at this show. People are just inconsiderate, especially short girls who act like they are moving up and all of a sudden they are planted right in front of you in your own personal space. And the beer guy, horrible. So disruptive. They need to do away with that.

The show was outstanding. Fiona delivered the same intense, sultry performance that I remember when I saw her last 7 years ago. But the venue did not serve her well. There was something very wrong with the sound, at least from the standing room near the stage. Many people complained about her not having an encore, but it didn't really bother me that she played straight through her encore songs without stopping and coming back out. I also was not bothered by the fact that she didn't play Criminal.

It was amazing. She was just as crazy and beautiful as I imagined. She was like a villain from a Silent Hill movie with her dramatic body gestures and twitches. But her cooing and violent voice made the night.

Ok. Someone rudely yelled something to her about her appearance in Portland and she left crying. She apparently made a snide comment about movie critic Rex Reed at the LA show and then sort of apologized at the start of the Berkeley show. She doesn't perform often but when she does she is brilliant. Yes. She is very thin. But her voice can be strong and angry when need be. Quirky also. Pulling out some interesting accompanying instruments out of a packing box....pieces of wood...a metal figure...a glass dish. FIONA APPLE seems a little neurotic on stage but she is a talent. Accompanied by three musicians ...the most notable is singer - song writer - musician BLAKE MILLS. He is brilliant. A phenomenal guitar player. A singer with a mellow voice. And he keeps Fiona's focus as she is somewhat prone to drift. The show lasted two hours and i felt lucky to be able to be there. BLAKE MILLS is a major talent...Fiona is letting everyone discover him by bringing him on this brief tour. Very special night in Berkeley

As always, you will come away with an unforgettable evening when you are lucky enough to catch Fiona. She is unique and blazingly honest in her performance and banter and has only gotten better with the years. No one can deliver a song the way she does today. It reminds me of videos that I've seen of Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald. Lyrically, she has always been at the top of her game and if you like her records, you must see her live. Really, don't miss this tour (or any change to see her, since she doesn't play live all that often). And, this shouldn't need to be said but please, shut up and let her perform. It's ridiculous and rude that people are shouting out comments or even requests. She is a real artist, shut up and take in the amazing evening you are lucky enough to see.

I thought I was buying tix to see Fiona Apple. Instead, we got some guy named Blake Mills splitting the stage and the set list with Fiona. To make it worse, sometimes when Fiona would do one of her songs, it was often scorched (in a bad way) by Blake Mills overwrought guitar work. The beauty of a Fiona concert (I've been to a few over the years) is her and her piano and her pain and her riveting voice. Got virtually none of that. Extremely disappointing.
