Railroad Earth

RAILROAD EARTH IN CONCERT:Progressive bluegrass band Railroad Earth combines virtuosic musicianship, extensive improvisation, and psychedelic visuals to deliver a world-class concert experience that's rooted in tradition yet firmly forward-looking. The group's rootsy, Americana-infused sound takes on new dimensions at their live shows, where amplified mandolin, guitar, and lap steel combine to create a mind-blowing swirl of bluegrass instruments. The band totally rocks out as they bring tracks like "Elko" and the 15-minute "Like a Buddha" to life on tour, inspiring ear-to-ear grins and euphoric dancing among concertgoers.BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:    New Jersey-based Railroad Earth formed in 2010 around the songwriting of former From Good Homes frontman Todd Sheaffer.

Anticipation was high for last night's show and the fans and Railroad Earth brought it big time. A sold-out performance of the highest calibre left everyone tired (from the dancing) and feeling wonderfully satisfied. The only question that people were asking on the way out was, "when can we do that again?"

Don't let the banjo fool you; this is no bluegrass folksy gathering. These are some hard core musicians who pentrate the surface of many definable genres of today's musical landscape. Every song gathers intensity as the jammin' evolves, and your whole body and soul react to its invitation to frolic. PP is a great venue for such fabulous talent who respond with a sincere intimacy and increased energy of their musical performance.

An excellent venue (Penns Peak) to see them play to an appreciative audience. Pretty laid back but very excited feel from the crowd. The new bass player looked like he was having fun. The mandolin and fiddle back-and-forthing was phenomenal. Loved seeing one musician go from saxophone to banjo - and even play two saxes at once. The musicianship was amazing! So much fun! We danced our toes off!

I can't even begin to explain how incredible this band is. This was the second time I've seen RRE and it was even better than the first. The venue was awesome, and so perfect for a band like railroad. Very intimate, and felt like the bands were playing just for us. Infamous Stringdusters were a wonderful start to the night--and even though their van had broken down only hours before the event, they were on time and ROCKIN their bluegrass jams. My sister and I were front and center the whole night, having the time of our lives. My parents were on the dance floor most of the night too--these two bands are perfect for all ages, and as we were all saying all night, this music makes you so happy to be alive. Not only do they rock with unbelievable talent, they are also so nice! We had the pleasure of talking to members of both bands in between sets. They were all very willing and pleased to meet us devoted fans. Please see both bands, please go to this venue. It was an unforgettable night.

I am so thankful I was able to be at this show last night. Infamous started around 9:30 and were absolutely fantastic, I really think they are going places. Railroad Earth played 2 sets and I could have stayed all night listening to them, they were truly incredible. I had the pleasure of meeting lead singer Todd Sheaffer between sets. My sister, friend and I were a little starstruck and he was extremely friendly and sat with us for a few minutes before "getting back to work" and going on to the next set. The entire show was so special and my sister, friend, parents and I were all dancing in the front row until the show ended at 1am. I look forward to many Railroad shows (and Infamous Stringdusters) in the future. Thank you!

Once again Railroad Earth performed like they were playing for 10,000 fans instead of the 200+ that filled the Plaza Theatre. A terrific, fan friendly venue with comfy seats and lots of dance space. It was easy to get up close and personal as the band played. Truly some of the best musicians on earth (ha-on Railroad Earth!) They are tight and smooth and push themselves to play their hearts out. I simply loved being there and really liked the Plaza theatre.

The National is an excellent place for a show. The open floor down stairs and seats upstairs is a nice set up. The choice of beverages is excellent. First night of Railroad Earth at Variety Playhouse was great! Second time seeing them for me, my wife, and our 19-year old son. Band was tight and they are all so versatile. Loved the addition of Sheryl Renee! Only complaint was the light show which seemed to have no rhyme or reason and bore no relation to the music. It was as if a five-year old (or a monkey) was running amok on the light board. Also way too many lights pointed directly in our eyes instead of the stage. Otherwise, a great experience.

We have been following Railroad Earth for well over 10 + years. Their music and talent has evolved into a wonderful mix of American Roots music, Bluegrass/New Grass and intellectual funk fusion with a twist of New Orleans jazz. It is difficult to place these fine musician's in to any one musical genre. What we find most amazing is the fan base is made up of a mix of young and older folks, pure hippies and hippie wanna-bees, Doctors, Lawyers, accountants as well as Moms and Dads with their children. Great fun guaranteed. We highly recommend downloading a few of their shows - its is well worth the money - especially if you are not able to get out and see a performance live and up close. The band members remain very focused and even after all of these years, they are still very approachable. Thank you RRE!!

This was a great, high energy show. They rocked through the whole first set. The second set was also great, with a centerpiece of 1759/Goat. What a great night of music. Not the usual RRE set of standards tunes. They jammed the hell out of every song. And the In Memory of Elizabeth Reed encore was crazy good! After getting shut out of one of the last ABB show at the Beacon a week before because of Gregg Allman's illness, hearing Liz Red was especially gratifying this night. We will definitely be back for more.

So, my brother drug me to this show as it is one of his favorite bands, so I was not really looking forward to the music per se, just a chane to hang out w/him. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the music. The opening band, Dead Winter Carpenters, were surprisingly good. They had an energy that set things up for RRE. When RRE took the stage, things kicked up a notch. The energy was palpable throughout the venue. The music got everyone dancing and up on their feet for the majority of the show. The songs were bluegrass, of course, but also had a jangly jam vibe as well. They were clearly in their element when they were non-vocal and just jamming along. If you like bluegrass or jam bands, don't miss out on RRE when they & their Hobos come to your town!

Yarn opened the night with a great 45 minute set that I wish had been extended. They are getting better each show and they will be a lead performer at venues like the National soon. Railroad Earth had me hooked after their first two songs. They are like a combination of the Seldom Scene, Old and In the Way and the Allman Brothers that forms into a great band. The beginning of the show was a psychedelic flashback in a great musical venue. What a great night.

What a pleasure it was hearing such a great album being recreated by both old and new artists. It could be clearly seen how much the band members enjoyed playing together. Good for the soul!! The Sherman should look at their policy of GA vs seating. This should have definitely been a reserved seating show. The Shermans focus seems to be on overselling the venue, and selling alcohol than the quality of the experience, so sad

This show was amazing. Railroad Earth and Peter Rowan doing Old And In The Way was outstanding and was a joy to see. Railroad Earth did their usual great performance, but when you add Peter Rowan and do Old and in The Way with one of the original members of that group it brings things to a whole new level never reached by the band. Railroad also went back to their roots and did an outstanding set on there own of old time songs.

The Bands performances were epic! Our reserved seats were center and Row 31. There was a good deal of confusion in the crowd regarding reserved seats vs. GA. Most Red Rocks patrons are used to GA. So i saw some arguments arise when people showed up late to claim their reserved seating. It was even rumored that only rows 10- 40 were reserved. More confusing. At row 31, The sound was loud and mostly mid and high range. Unless you are a loud concert lover (which I am) Bring Ear Plugs as i would be willing to bet the db range was <100. Towards the end of the show i moved down to row 5 seats 14-15. Bass was much richer and the screaming mid and high range was more balanced. BTW bathrooms were 250 stairs away at row 31. 30 stairs away from row 5. Overall I was very happy with the Concert.

Penn's Peak is the most beautiful indoor place to see a concert. Its like being inside a ski lodge or a log cabin. I was surprised to hear that only 400-500 tickets were sold for this show. The place holds about 1800. There was plenty of room to move around, and it was easy to get up close, and see the band from many different vantage points. I was a little disappointed that the balcony was closed. This is usually my favorite place to see a show from. The staff told me that they needed to sell 700 tickets before they could open the balcony. Railroad Earth is a band beyond description. Some people may describe them as playing Bluegrass, or "Newgrass" music, but this is not true. They have a drummer, and they also are playing more electric instruments now (guitar, bass, etc). Their sound is evolving beyond their acoustic roots, and their new self titled album showcases this sound.

Since I know little about this band, I did not know what to expect last night. I was not disappointed! This band has quite a distinctive sound that is unlike any band I have heard. On some songs the sound resembled the Grateful Dead, on others the sound was described as "phsychedelic country/bluegrass" by my wife! No question that they are all extremely gifted musicians. Playing mostly electrified acoustic guitars, mandolins, violin, bass and flute, as well as drums, keyboards and several horns, they create a unique sound. The light show was amazing, BUT, at times they seem to flash a lot of lights directly into the audience, I found this to be uncomfortable. I would encourage anyone who is open to NEW GREAT music to go see them live.

Green Sky was new to me, and quite good. Galactic started off decently with Corey Glover tagging along. Unfortunately, they crumbled into an aural assault of self indulgent crap. It was so shockingly bad by the end that I couldn't quit laughing...were they playing a joke on us? RRE played well, but struggled to regain the audience after Galactic played 50 decibels louder.

railroad earth was incredible as always. The combination of Galactic made the experience epic and Greensky Bluegrass was phenomenal too!

Great show, all three bands rocked it. Wished that Greensky played longer.

These were two of the best Railroad Earth shows I have ever seen. I mean they played until 1:30AM at Red Rocks Amphitheatre... who does that? Not only was it an incredibly long show, but the playing was incredibly tight. Both shows had very good setlists, and the openers killed it.

Greensky bluegrass was a great opener. Galactic was amazingly funky. Although railroad earth was great, it wasnt as exciting coming after galactic. Galactic needs to be the headliner.

One of the best shows I have seen at RR. And the rain made it even more memorable. Cannot wait to see them again.

I understand now, that Bruce Hornsby and Railroad Earth were co-headlining, so they switch off who opened for who. Bruce opened at 7:00 on the dot, which was slightly annoying since I was running 5 min late, hoping he wouldn't be quite THAT punctual. Humphreys by the Bay is a sweet little venue overlooking the marina, smaller than I imagined. Bruce and the Noisemakers started with some newer material that I and probably few others in the audience recognized. But they quickly transitioned into their best stuff from the last 15 years, throwing in a few of their modernized 80's classics. They did a great "Mandolin Rain", mixing in newer adaptations of the song with the classic version. "White Wheeled Limousine" was the closer, a personal favorite of mine. No "The Way it is", however, which didn't bother me, but I know a lot of people, including my wife, were probably disappointed. The set seemed short to me, just 90 min, but I suppose that's typical of the opening act. Wish I would've seen a full set. I was very surprised at the average age of the crowd. I'm in my mid 30's and felt younger than 90% by a good 20 years. Bruce should've tried to market to a younger crowd, my generation could definitely appreciate and benefit from his music If more of us had been aware of what he has been doing after The Range. I didn't stay for Railroad Earth. Not a big fan of bluegrass.

I was suprised to find out that Bruce Hornsby was the opening act. The show started out slow. The 'avant garde' type sound of his new stuff was not much to my liking. He closed his show well with some stardards, but the jewel to his performance was when he invited members of Railroad Earth to join him for a song or two. . Bruce even came out and played with Railroad Earth. Railroad Earths performance made up for the slow moving first half. They brought the audience to their feet, a rarity at any show here, even at sporting events. The Venue had a great atmosphere, and the sound was fantastic. A bit of a sprinkle started out the evening, but it didnt materialize into anything. 10;30 sharp the show ended.. Noise Ordinance. No encore.. what a shame :( Great Show

Numbskull
As is the reputation for both these bands, they gave great live performances at Humphrey's. Although it seemed as thought two different groups of fans attended the event to see one or the other of the bands, the performances by both bands were top of the line and fun. I believe one group of fans was more familiar with Hornsby, and another group of fans was more familiar with Rail Road Earth. However, as I said, both bands are outstanding live. Rail Road Earth is among one of the most popular "live jam bands" right now and is known for their contemporary blue grass and perhaps jazz style. Although Hornsby is known for a number of hit tunes, his style is eclectic, including jazz, rock, improvisational, heartland, jam, and more. Also, as you would expect with Hornsby, he had an awesome band. In fact, it was a wonderful treat when Hornsby and Rail Road Earth played together. I got the impression that some people in attendance (perhaps "older" like me) didn't realize that Rail Road Earth is one of the current great live jam bands and has been playing at sold out festivals. It was a wonderful opportunity to see them at Humphrey's. In fact, while listening to Sirius/XM jam station that morning, the DJ announced that Railroad Earth and Hornsby were playing that night at somewhere called Humphrey's in San Diego. I got a kick out of that. So, these were two great bands that happened to be getting together at the little outdoor arena by the marina. I felt lucky to be there and enjoy all the great music. I'd go see either band again, and I would certainly see both bands on the same bill. In my book...that was quite a good deal. It was an impressive lineup by Humphrey's. Hopefully the different fans who were patient discovered the "other" band that they were not familiar with. Thanks to both bands for a very nice summer evening. I would definitely recommend seeing either one of these bands. The music ranged from emotionally moving, as beautiful music can be, -- to "get up and DANCE" jam. For those willing to "go with it" -- it was real darn fun! Thank you.

I bought tickets for Bruce Hornsby with Railroad Earth. I just assumed Railroad Earth, who I hadn't heard of, would be opening for Bruce Hornsby (who we love). Bruce played about 1.5 hours, then there was a 30 minute break with the last hour + with Railroad Earth playing. Not really a fan of them after hearing the music and wish there would have been some set list or schedule for the night ahead of time. Wish we'd had more Bruce!

First the location (5 stars): Humphrey by the bay is a great place to see a show. You just can't beat outdoors, San Diego, and an intimate venue on a nice summer night. Bought the dinner and concert tickets and the dinner was great. Will eat there again, concert or not. Out the restaurant door and into the concert. Even the drink prices were reasonable. Now for Bruce Hornsby (2 stars): When you have past hit songs, people expect to hear them. He didn't play many of them and I for one was disappointed. A lot of what he did play was rather boring, several new songs that just were not that good. He also only played for an hour and 15 minutes, which means we were out of there at 8:15 PM.

This nite was Bruce and then RR Earth. Bruce came out dressed in his usual Black Shirt and blue jeans and proceeded to rock the house down with "look out any window", one of my faves, to start off his 1 hr and 10 min set. He play us his new songs that were in short, capitivating to his audience of about 1,000. I like 2 of his new songs, the one about all the wonderful side effects of today's prescription medications which kept me laughing through out the song and "I'll take you there", which should be a hit on the radio, if stations would play it because it is that good. He ended his set with "white wheeled Limousine", another one of my faves, and had the place rockin and dancing all over the place. Maybe it was a little short but I understood that being we were getting 2 for 1 that nite, in bands that is. Railroad Earth was "WILD", it was bluegrass on steroids. all the younger concert goers were really into this band and stood the entire show, as did my friend and I did the same, stood and danced. their music is hypnotic and wildly different from anything I've ever heard and yes, it makes you want to dance. I didn't know the names of any of their songs but the younger concert goers knew them all and did fist pumps at the right time through out the show. They played for about 1 hr., 45 min. and made me a new fan of there music. Noise of the earth tour was truely that, beautiful noise that sometimes was out of this earth...

Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers put on a great show and when I've seen them in the past, I have walked away feeling like they gave it their all. Not so much this time. They left too soon. And the audience wasn't even seated when he started because they didn't expect Hornsby to come out first. Just as an aside, Bruce invited everyone to move forward to the stage after the third song, which would be very cool if not for the fact that the people in the front row (people who paid the most to see him) were blocked off by the crowd that migrated up from the back. I was in the second row so I was ok, but I wouldn't have been happy sitting in front. Sorry, Bruce, I was a bit disappointed this time, but I'll be back.

Enjoyed the much too brief (under 90 min) first set by Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers. Hornsby is a talented and dynamic performer and his musicianship and ability to improvise was at its best. After a long intermission, Railroad Earth took the stage. This band was the clear favorite of the younger members of the audience, but unfortunately they failed to ignite our interest. Derivative of other jam bands like the Grateful Dead, Railroad Earth seems to lack a clear musical identity. We enjoyed the instrumental pieces (and the energy in the audience that was generated) but threw in the towel after some dreadful vocal pieces where the lead singer was so off-key it was painful. We would drive 400+ miles to see Hornsby again but wouldn't drive down the block to see Railroad Earth.

1st time seeing a show at Best Buy Theater. Venue was very nice - but the floor was disgusting - the venue really needs more trash cans on the floor! Great food, easy to get to, bathrooms were super clean, sound was awesome. RRE was great. This is the middle of their tour so band was tight, with a great setlist.
