Christopher Cross

Christopher Cross

Christopher Cross made history when his debut self-titled album was released in 1980.  The album featured the international hit songs Sailing, Run Like the Wind and Never Be The Same. It went on to win five Grammy Awards, including—for the first time ever—the four most prestigious awards: Record of the Year (for the single “Sailing”), Album of the Year, Song of the Year (also for “Sailing”), and Best New Artist.  An extraordinary song writer, Cross wrote all these songs and another of the most famous songs of the time - “Arthurs Theme (The best that you can do)” which he co-wrote with Burt Bacharach & Peter Allen and featured in the film Arthur that starred Liza Minelli and Dudley Moore.

My husband and I truly enjoyed the Christopher Cross concert. He was wonderful and was backed by a band of excellent musicians. This was our first visit to "The Queen" in Wilmington, DE. It is a very interesting venue. The acoustics were fine and the "old theater" look together with non-traditional seating made for a unique experience. I would attend another concert there.

Great performance by Christopher Cross @ B.B. King Blues Club in NYC. I ve waited for about 30 years to see this man sing live & he did not disappoint. What made it even better was that it was a relatively small, intimate venue. I was Swept Away ... I ll Never Be The Same! My only complaint was that it took quite a while before a waiter even came to our table while all the surrounding tables were being serviced. But other than that, fabulous!

Christopher Cross gave a great performance. Played all his memorable tunes had the audience enchanted. The only thing that was not great was the seating. Seating was packed tightly placing 6 people in one table. There s no eblow room if you sit with large individuals. But hey what do you expect for 60 bucks seats, right. If you re a picky person who wants to enjoy the night with your special guest do not get the general admission ticket. You will be cramped next to other folks who either talk throughout the venue or cough. Other than that the show was great. Thanks B.B. Kings....

Liked the starting act real potential. Cross had a good mix of old and new. Lengthy break between warm up act and performance incongruence and annoying. Poorly managed. Should start the sales pitch in the beginning telling why we are here with very brief and I mean brief reminder when introducing Cross.

Christopher Cross gave another awesome show and played all my favorites. Talked a bit to us about his time traveling and was great. Background light display awesome and band was a hit too. Music changed a bit but that was great too. I am still reliving that night and thought it was a hit. I will not forget it. Thanks for singing "Swept Away" and "Sailing".

I have been a fan of Christopher Cross since the 1980's and have followed his music over the years. I never thought that i would be in a position to see him and the band live. I visited New York in April 2010 for the specific reason as to see Christopher live at BB King's and he was just as good as he is on the CD's i play, if not, even better. I would certainly have no hesitation in attending a future concert, even if i had to fly to New York again. Thanks Christopher for all the years of continued pleasure you have provided for me and your fan base.

The venue is outstanding. Great atmosphere, not too small but cozy enough to be close to the artist. Sound was excellent---that's really important ---been to enough shows over the years where that aspect was sadly lacking-- not fair to the artist or the audience. Chris was great---vocals haven't lost a thing. The band was tight--he obviously cares a lot about the quality of his supporting players. His banter with the crowd was genuine---that's also refreshing. I remember covering some of his songs in clubs in Jersey 'round 80'/81'. Found myself wanting to sing along---great singer/player-- great show.

I saw Christopher Cross as an opening act at Pachanga Casino. He was AMAZING ! Unfortunately, the show I saw at Calif. Theatre was an "acoustic show", not at as good as the one I'd seen previously, If the show had been advertised as an "acoustic show" I probably would not have purchased tickets.

The venue is really great, we sat in the balcony and felt like we were on stage. His songs brought back many memories and although I hadn't followed his career much I recognized his signature songs and the opening artist was a very good musician. The other musicians in the band were very talented. If there was a disapointment it was some of the songs Cristopher Cross sang it was very hard to understand the words. The sound level was good but his annunciation was hard to hear. My wife loved it. It was her 46th birthday. So, I oved it

The venue was really great. Christopher Cross was excellent. It was small and intimate and you felt as though you were there as a listening to a friend. The sound system in the theatre was really good for the acoustics show Cris preformed. My husband and I would go back to the theatre again to see other bands. It was an enjoyable experience and Chris Cross was the best. It is nice to see a favorite artist from the past in a setting such as the Plaza Theatre.

This is the second event I have had the pleasure to attend at the Plaza Theater. The evening show started off with a Orlando Local, who's unique Jazz impressions was carefully crafted and provided an excellent experience to those unfamiliar with Chris's work. Christopher came on shortly after Chris and his new interpretation of his older work gave the familiar tunes a new and welcomed feel. The new Jazz inspired flavor mixed with a intimate atmosphere of the Plaza made this a memorable evening. Great show, great staff

I have always wanted to see Christopher Cross. I was so glad I did last night at the Gallo Events Center for the Arts in Modesto, Ca. Great show. The Musicianship was amazing. All top notch including Chris who played some tasteful guitar riffs and solos. I did not know he was that good! Than there were his two vocalist whom were fantastic in their own right. Some of his classics were done in a different style and loved it. It was nice to hear a different arrangement. One can always go back to the recordings. Hope you record them Chris! Christopher's vocals were excellent. All in All a great evening of great music from a very talented musician/songwriter. Get the chance, I say Go. I know I will again. Bravo

At first, I was not sure if CC was ok. He came out for his first song and mumbled his way through. Then, he introduced his band, one of them being from "right here in Florida". The only problem with that was, the concert was in Ocean City, MD. Someone up front must have corrected him and he said something like: "Well, right next door." Except that Jacksonville is 750 miles away. Also, when the full band was playing, if you did not already know the words, you could not understand or even hear a word he sang. Maybe it was the sound guy but I don't think so. He really needs to project more. On the plus side, he had an unplugged section where it was just him, an acoustic guitar, and sometimes one of his singers. That sounded great and was very enjoyable. He could have done the whole concert that way.

Everyone was great except the star, Christopher Cross. Couldn't hear over the band. I couldn't understand how the sound guy never made any adjustments. He did "Think of Laura" alcapella and it was the one bright spot of the night. His mouth was right up to the mike and still couldn't hear him.

We have never seen Christopher Cross in person and have always had a conflict whenever he has been in our area but finally were able to see him perform at The Birchmere, one of our favorite venues. He is a talented musician and played all his hits as well as some from a new album coming out soon. He explained the back stories for his songs and seemed to enjoy performing, even though he didn't smile often. His band was also really good and they all looked like they were having a great time performing. Christopher Cross performed some acoustic selections without the band and those included "Think of Laura", all the more poignant because he explained it was about a friend who had tragically died at 19. My seat was right in front and I could have reached out and touched Christopher Cross but I didn't...ha...seats were awesome!

I have been listening to, singing along with and loving Christopher Cross songs since I was a child. My dream of being able to sing along in real life was finally fulfilled this week! Still the same smooth, melodic and beautiful voice as ever! I definitely recommend seeing hm in person especially if you are a child of the 80's. My only issue with the concert had nothing at all to do with his performance. The Bergan PAC is not an easy place to see a concert. This was not my first experience at the venue. While it was much better than the last time I was there, the sound system definitely leaves more than a lot to be desired. I don't say this lightly because I go to concerts of different genres all the time. The sound is not equalized and always too loud for enjoyment.

Maybe I just had higher expectations, but it seemed like Mr. Cross was just going through the motions of playing his classics from his first two albums. At first I thought maybe age had already taken its toll on his vocal chords. But when he played other (less well known) songs his voice did come alive. If these were new renditions of his old classics, they fell short especially when you're a big fan of his music... The back-up band was excellent but shouldn't be used as a crutch for an uninspired performance...

Christopher Cross was excellent! His musicians were extremely talented; watching Andy Suzuki play the sax and keyboard simultaneously was incredible. The only thing I was not happy with was the order of the songs, they played "Sailing" early on and the encore was a cover of "Imagine" by John Lennon. To hear "Ride like the wind" live was unbelievable.

I had never seen Christopher Cross and this concert was really quite surprising. I saw Chris at the Birchmere which is a smaller venue, closer to a large night club than a theater. Chris sounded fantastic, better than on the radio. He is truly a talented musician and still plays music the way you first heard it on the radio or a CD. I will definitely be going to see him again when he comes around again. Made me go find my old Chris Cross CD's to listen too again.

My girlfriend and I go to 30+ shows per year. It's great to see the enthusiasm and love of the work displayed by most of the artists, especially those whom have been around for a very long time. Cross mumbled his way through his repertoire of "hits", and I felt bad, thinking maybe his voice was shot. But when he played his new numbers, or those old ones I had never heard, he belted some of them out with great strength of voice. It was easy to conclude that he is so k and tired of singing his well known standards, and did so with no gusto. We have seen many many 80's groups who come out and put their heart and soul into every performance, and we have returned to see them more than once. We were in agreement, we wouldn't go see Mr. Cross again, even if the show was free. Unfortunate, but true.

If you are a Cross fan, you will probably be happy with it. If you're on the fence and are curious, I would save your money. Cross has a decent band with him, they do a good job, but nothing memorable. Although Cross has never been accused of having a great voice, his limits as a singer were very obviouslv, he had trouble with some songs - his voice is certainly better on the records - the vocals on "Sailing" were painful. He did some decent guitar playing, but it was mostly repeating a couple of speed licks that he has in his arsenal. He tried mixing in some jazzier numbers into his playlist, with lots of chords and Ill defined melodies. After 75 minutes it all sounded the same, so we left. Sorry, we tried - but it simply was forgettable. even when he was playing his hits. Interestingly, he didn't seem to be into it and gave the appearance of just going through the motions. Virtually no eye contact, and his banter with the audience was fast and mumbling - couldn't decipher it, and the Birchmere is a small intimate venue with a great sound system. Not that I'm into demonstrative performers, but Cross gave me the feeling that he'd rather be somewhere else.

Concert could have been better. I agree with other comments made earlier. The main problem is that the band is too loud and it is hard to hear Christopher's voice. Some of the older songs were re-mixed and hard to recognize. Recommendation: Ditch the band and backup singers (or at least have the music mixers reduce the volumes of the others) and let Christopher's voice come through.

With the exact pure sweetness Chris's voice always had, his voice shows not a trace of aging. Chris was funny yet mellow, and sang his hits plus more. He played 8 guitars with such expertise. His band was sensational and provided a lovely smooth jazz fusion fitting for Chris's vocals. Two female vocalists provided mystifyingly lovely harmonies. A media screen behind the stage displayed images of scenery, the movie Arthur, and images to provide texture. I adored adored adored this entire concert. Never wanted it to end. Sat five rows from stage, in the the center of the row. When Christopher Cross sang, with little support, the sound was great. However, his voice was almost inaudible when the rest of the band joined a song. Especially overpowering seemed to be the drummer/ drums. Had the perfect seat which was front row Center Stage looking right up a Christopher Cross all night. They knocked this show out of the park from the first note delivered by their First Class Saxophone player! He really set the tone from the beginning and with his superior tone and musicianship, I knew that this show was not going to be just average and a replay of his hits. They rolled out some songs from their new CD which was C Cross music on steroids! Had that same feel like his music, but was brought into this decade. Lyrics were nice and deep like you d expect. When the played their hits that made Christopher Cross the icon that he is, some had a current twist added which made you fall in love with those songs all over again. His voice was strong and in tune. He was still able to hold the high notes long without dropping off real quick and then have the back up singers fill the rest of the note in. The song Laura had Christopher come out really strong with the line Hey Laura. It came out really strong and right in tune. His musicians were all hand selected by Christopher and he does an excellent job in finding the prefect musicians. The Sax player is a keeper and First Class all the way. His improv skills are beautiful with a nice jazz taste. His use of complex scales works for him. It was fun when he played the keyboard at the same time that he played the Alto. He switched hands playing the upper hand of the sax with the opposite hand and then used his left hand in the keyboard on Ride Like the Wind! Christopher played lead guitar for the band as well as rhythm guitar. This is difficult when he is also the lead singer and the MC. His solos were right on. Or overbearing at all, but very tasteful. The back up singers were both very soothing to listen too. They blend in very well with the high range of CCross. The three of them had a nice blend of harmony. They had excellent showmanship with nice movement that was tasteful. Each of the ladies did a duet with Christopher that were captivating. Marcia was mesmerizing when she sang with Christopher and really brought you in. I felt what she felt when she sang. The overall sound from the concert was perfect. Loud enough that you felt the music but not overbearing and hurt the ears. It had a nice blend along with a quality sound, and not just loud. They are a well oiled machine and they all played tight. I would go again to see them play over and over. Everyone left satisfied and soothed!

In all honesty, I wasn't sure what to expect. Sure, this guy owned the charts with his first few albums. After that, I kinda lost interest. It turns out that was my poor judgment. My wife and I enjoyed the concert as well as everybody at the Plaza Theater, unfortunately time has passed over Christopher Cross' voice and he cannot sing the way he used to. But this doesn't mean that we didn't enjoy the concert, we had fun and some good remembrances came up to our mids when we heard "Never be the Same", "Sailing", "Ride like the Wind" and "Arthur" as well as the others. Excellent sound, good timing and length of the concert. It was our first time at the Plaza theater. Nice size to enjoy shows from anywhere but seats too low made me feel as if I was seated at the floor and my legs were hurting. Easy access, lots of parking space, affordable price.

We had fifth row, dead center seats at the intimate Plaza Theater in downtown Orlando. Cross' backup band were jazz musicians on piano, winds, bass and trap set. Very, very good when released which was not as often as I would have liked. My favorite was "The Red Room" from the Avalon CD which showed off the musicians the best. Other tunes from his famous debut album and albums over the years. Overall, a totally wonderful experience. Afterward, Cross and Burns were in the lobby w/CD, signings, pictures and conversation. Great time and not what you're going to get in a stadium concert.

Seating was in booth, the tables in front of the booth had ticket holders move their chairs to the ends of the table blocking the isle and the view. None of the 4 people in the booth including myself had a view of Mr. Cross. The music had a lot of warm up type instrumental stall tracks while technical difficulties were corrected. The songs were ok but may unheard hits missed the mark. The song Laura played as a "special request" was the best part of the night because Mr. Cross explained the back story to it. My guests were overall disappointed and the Venue had a lot to be desired.

Christopher Cross at the Birchmere not only did not disappoint, but exceeded expectations, was the best ever, and I can t wait to go again! Waitress was superb but would prefer wider menu selection and have enjoyed my entree there quite a bit more in the past.

We saw Christopher Cross at the Birchmere a few years ago. We were awed then by the tightness of the show as he and his excellent accompanying musicians played songs off of his first album.(Plus, of course, Think of Laura and Arthur's Theme) I recall that he had been performing at a New York hotel for some time - thus, perhaps the intimate feel. This show had many of the same songs -- with great new arrangements. But overly loud drums and bass detracted from what would have made this new show excellent rather than only very good, A drum solo, seriously? A fine show that took great ballads and made them only average.

Small but great venue, loved the bar at the back as you could get a drink and not miss any of the show. Band was tight and performance was great. Played all of the old hits and some great new stuff.

Great night of music at a really cool venue! Christopher is still sounding really good at 68 years old - sure he's not as strong vocally as he used to be, but still really great! The venue is BEAUTIFUL - but with only one entrance and exit, it did get a little claustrophobic in there. Other than that, it was outstanding! Great sound, beautiful theatre, great band backing up Christopher and all of the hits you'd want to hear! 4 out if 5 stars!

The music drowned out his voice until he played acoustic. He changed songs. I would not go to see him again.

First several song sounded like drum solos. Lady at concert had to tell person doing the mixing to turn up Chris' microphone so we could hear him sing. Best part of the concert was when the drummer was off stage. Theater had NO crowd control. Drunks in back were trying to talk above the DRUMS. They should have be though out and told to go down the street to a bar. DRUMS-DRUNKS- ONE WORD - REFUND

I go to a lot of events at the Kirby, and I have yet to figure out if sound issues are the fault of the tour or the site because they have happened here before. The best part of this show was the acoustic set simply because you could actually hear & understand Chris. For the majority of the evening, you could enjoy the songs because you knew them, but the lyrics were largely unintelligible & more of a low mumble. The sound quality was sorely lacking, and what should have been a very enjoyable and entertaining show turned out to be simply average.

Chris was great of course but he has put together a very talented band with great accompanying singers as well. He shared the limelight with the other people in the band. There were some cool videos to go with some songs. I loved Ride Like The Wind and Think Of Laura. Worth going to!

Usually a little concerned about attending concerts from singer/song writers from a few years back - however - PLEASANTLY SURPRISED!!! SOUNDS JUST LIKE HE DID WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT HIS ALBUM! Love the song Sailing - and it was the first one he sang - made me tear up! Would love to see him again in concert!! The Madrid theater is a fantastic venue! Thanks for a WONDERFUL EVENING!

Christopher Cross played a great show. The Madrid was beautiful and we were excited to be there. Clearly there was a group of people who were NOT there to enjoy the music. Soooooo much noise was coming from the back of the theater that another concert goer actually screamed will you shut the hell up?!?! in between songs. The constant murmer and laughing from the lobby was such a distraction that it made the concert less enjoyable. I would love to see Christopher cross and his back up singers again.

Not sure if it was because of the lack of audience but he just didn't seem to be into this concert. This was my 2nd time seeing him and his performance was just off. His band and the girls in the band seemed to do more of the performing than he did. Disappointing performance.

This was the first time I have seen Christopher Cross live and I thought that it was really worth it. He played all of his hits and many of his other songs that were performed was off of his first album entitled Christopher Cross. Highlights for me included Never Be The Same, a nice rendition of Think of Laura, Best That You Can Do with a video from the movie Arthur which reminded me how great of a movie that was, Sailing and the finale, Ride Like The Wind. For an encore, the band performed John Lennon's Imagine. He is accompanied by a nice band. I thought that the MVP of the band was sax player Justin Vasquez. He helped make many of the songs sound incredible. Kudos to his two female back-up singers, Marcia Ramirez and Brittany Black. They were good. And give credit to the sound guy. All of the singing and instruments were crystal clear. It's amazing how much you can enjoy a show when the sound is right. The only negative I had with the show was the second to last song, All Right. The lyrics were sung by Brittany, not Christopher. It just didn't do anything for me. I would have much preferred Christopher singing it. Also of note, I was disappointed in the attendance, or lack there of. The venue was only about half full and the prices were more than reasonable. They ranged from $30-$65. Perhaps Christopher should try a venue with a little more population next time. Maybe L'auberge in Baton Rouge or a casino in Biloxi or New Orleans would provide more people. But overall, a nice show that is highly recommended.

Amazing talent and beautiful chemistry and music among band members. He's a solid person very grateful and humble of his success. His non top 10 songs would be to 10's if released today - wonderful jazz, rock, fusions His voice hasn't changed in 30 years it's pitch perfect

High points for me: the musicianship was absolutely phenomenal, played all the hits I "expected" to hear, videos and clips on the background screen were great (e.g. Clip of Chris and Dudley Moore together brought tears to my eyes), very nicely paced show. Low point: show was too short, only 1.5 hours? I could have gone for another hour easy. Inserting a couple more songs like Laura would have made it a near-perfect show. But it was great. Highly recommended for fans of that 80s era music.

I was so excited to see Christopher Cross! By the 2nd song, I told my friend "this might suck" He barely sings, relying heavily on his backup singers...long instrumentals....when he does sing, he doesn't enunciate and if you don't know the songs, you have no idea what he is saying/singing.

I was so disappointed. The sound mixing was awful. Christopher's singing was bad. The only thing that sounded good was the sax. We left half way through the show. I've never ever done that before.

This was our seventh Christopher Cross concert, and it was the only one that left us disappointed. The venue was great, but the sound was not. On some songs, it was hard to hear the vocals over a loud hum. The performance was short at about one hour, twenty minutes with no encore. One of his backup singers was off-key on most songs. Christopher had new arrangements for several of his early songs, but they were not that interesting. We are big fans, but this was an off night for Christopher Cross.

Overall an OK concert... that said, the sound quality was terrible. It appears the Sound engineer had a challenging time to balance all the various instruments as well as the singers. Overall, the audio was muddled and stepped all over Christopher's vocals. They did get better as the night went on. Highlight was his acoustics portion. With limited instruments, the engineer wasn't able to mess that part up.

Not sure if the venue had speaker problems or if it was the band but the music was way too loud for our liking and unfortunately drowned out Christopher Cross singing. The only time I could actually hear him singing was when he did a song cappella. It was a small venue and there was no need to have the music so loud the speakers sounded like they blew.

I had the privilege to spend a couple hours with Christopher Cross tonight who has a soul as a deep as the Mariana Trench ... his music is a love letter to everyone who has touched his life ... he feels everything deeply and he humbly shares his pure love for things that matter and merit immortalizing through song ...there is nothing fancy or pretentious about the show or him ... he simply needs to tell his story ... and I am the better for it ... Chris dedicated a song to our military servicemen ...the song honors our military and generously donates all proceeds to help American veterans... I couldn't revere this man more ~

What a night! One of those times when it felt like you were witnessing a private event. It was so intimate (even in a room of several thousand)! He sounds as good or better than he did back in the day. Bluesy and soulful, the show kept us absorbed in every note. The band- oh my! WOW! Incredibly talented, each and everyone of them! He did not leave out any favorites and even played a few unexpected goodies (John Lennon's "Imagine"). If you have the chance to see him (or any of the band members on their own)- do not miss it! It truly was one of the most incredible evenings of music I've ever experienced! Hated one thing: that it had to end!
