Sleater-Kinney

Sleater-Kinney

SLEATER-KINNEY IN CONCERT: The alt-rock goddesses of Sleater-Kinney have been cranking amplifiers and turning heads for over two decades. At their live shows they serve up one catchy, off-kilter classic after another with ten tons of riot grrrl energy. Guitarist Carrie Brownstein struts and thrashes around the stage producing her menacing and inventive riffs while singer Corin Tucker favors a calmer approach, resembling the eye of a storm with her intensely focused delivery. Holding it down on the drums is Janet Weiss, who lays down thunderous beats while the two other members trade searing vocals and intricate guitar parts.

Corin Tucker, Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss played some kick a$$ rock. Corbin's voice is awesome and Carrie is a rockstar on stage with her rock moves. Janet F'n Weiss on the drum kit ties it all together.

Great, high-energy show. Sleater-Kinney hasn't missed a beat since they last played six years ago; in fact, they are even better. I wish I had liked the opening act better, but could have done without it.

I have seen Sleater-Kinney once so far in their 20-year career and have tickets to go see them again in Raleigh, NC on 04/22/2015. The first time, I saw them play was in D.C. in front of the Washington Monument as they were part of the "Rock Against Bush" tour. I had only listened to a few of their albums and had not really paid attention to the lyrics because the music itself was enough for me at the time. After the concert, I went out and bought all the studio albums I could get my hands on at the time. If you read the lyrics as you listen to the songs, you realize they're a profoundly deep (lyrically) band - most unlike what is going around these days. The trio confronted such issues as feminism (Riotgrrrl Movement), war (post-9/11) thus vehemently speaking out against the '04 re-election of Bush Jr., teen suicides off the Golden Gate Bridge, etc. "The Woods" produced by SubPop records in 2005 (the last album by S-K before they declared their "indefinite hiatus") was fully produced in the woods of upstate New York. All of the songs are great, but "Entertain" asks bands and/or fans, "Nostalgia, you're using it like a whore.....Where's the black & blue?", meaning where is the grit in what is considered today's rock music. I urge you to go listen to any album: "Dig Me Out", "Call the Doctor", "The Hot Rock", "All Hands on the Bad One", "One Beat", "The Woods" or their newly released "No Cities to Love" and not only enjoy the music, but LISTEN to what they're saying.

I've been waiting for this concert for years. They exceeded all of the high expectations I had of them. Carrie and Corin sounded amazing, and Janet is, in my opinion, one of the best drummers out there today. I'm so glad they're back out there doing their thing.

Amazing show - they sounded better than the last time I saw them years ago. Energy, sound, presence, this show was EVERYTHING. Lizzo was an incredible opener, the right spirit and the right atmosphere. Great show, if you weren't there you missed out.

Sleater Kinney was incredible. It's great to see performers playing real instruments and using real drums and actual voices. Guitar rock/post-punk sounds so wonderful compared to all the processed music out there.

i have been a huge sleater-kinney fan since i was 14 years old after a family friend gave me a riot grrrl mix cd with "sold out" on it. since i grew up in a small texas town i never had the privilege or money to see them as a kid. all this to say i waited a LOOOOOOOOONG time for this show and it did not disappoint. at all. it was beautiful and life-changing. everything was perfect. the mix of old and new songs. the energy. the sound. the performance. i don't even have words to describe the flawless execution of music performed by these talented people. they were SO good i bought tickets to see them in dallas and pittsburgh. the crowd was a bit limp, but that's probably cuz I was dancing like i was alone in my bedroom. i went with a group of 8 people with varying knowledge of S-K and they were all completely floored. lizzo was pretty amazing too. i am a hip-hop fan, but the crowd of aging riot grrrls didn't seem too impressed. it seemed like a weird opener choice, but i had a good time dancing to her stuff.

Even the awful Terminal 5 could not take away from the awesomeness that is Sleater-Kinney. They tore through most of their new album, "No Cities to Love," and mixed in a good selection of tracks from their previous records. I've been a fan from the beginning and haven't missed any of their shows in NY since I first saw them in 1996. So glad they are back. Terminal 5, though? Awful, awful venue. It''s pretty hard to see there unless you are quite tall or are in the front.

SK put on an amazing show, as they always did before their hiatus. The band is in top form. I have seen this band and its members play 10 times or so over the years and this was definitely up there as far as performances go. Terminal 5 was awful as usual -- between the rude staff, terrible sightlines, bad speaker positioning, and frustrating and labyrinthine layout, they work really hard to make it a little painful to go to shows there. If you can see Sleater-Kinney at a good venue in another city, I would recommend that. Hopefully they'll play somewhere other than T5 next time around.

Sleater-Kinney have lost nothing in the decade since they went on indefinite hiatus. They played a tight, unrelenting show, with a great mix of new and old songs. On their own merits, I'd give them five stars. However, the House of Blues is the worst concert venue I've been to in my 30 years of concert-going. This is a corporate venue, with little personality, no soul, and a staff hellbent upon making the experience as unpleasant as possible. My ticket was for the Mezzanine level, which is a hellish experience save for those few patient enough to get there very early and secure a spot up front right against the banister. For everyone else, this is obstructed viewing. HoB's failure to indicate this is unacceptable. For the unlucky souls stuck on the Mezz, there are a few small flat screen TVs and a projector. The projector was not focused and there was a one-second delay between the music heard and the image displayed. I've included a picture of my view. Unfortunately, all of this pretty much ruined the experience for me and my companions. Never again.

Sleater Kinney rocked as hard as ever, but performed more like rock stars (in a good way) than ever. They are crazy cool. But the venue was also incredible. King's Theater is a beautifully renovated, palatial space. It's super well-staffed, and the staff were all so friendly. My husband is in a wheelchair, and they were very gracious about escorting us directly to our seats. When Sleater Kinney started playing everyone stood up and my husband couldn't see, but almost immediately a staff member came and led us (along with a friend who had joined us) up front so we could all get a good view. Overall really pleasant experience.

From the very second they took the stage, they brought it. So much energy and bravado. The chemistry between Carrie and Corin on stage was so compelling. Janet is a MACHINE. Corin's voice showed no signs of strain after several nights of performing -- nor did Carrie's. The set was beautiful, the colors, the lights, the movement. The venue was amazing. These women are just otherworldly beings. Every song delivered. Could not have expected a better show.

First I will say that the venue for this show was a beautifully renovated historic theater. I was completely awestruck when walking in to the theater by how ornate and beautifully restored this space was. Definitely several steps above what I am used to when attending a rock show. Once the show started I was nothing short of amazed by Sleater-Kinney. I purchased these tickets a while ago & traveled a good distance to be at this show. It was all worth it as soon as these 3 stepped on stage and started playing. These women are consummate performers and amazing musicians. Every song they played was executed with great precision and enthusiasm. Sleater-Kinney exceeded my lofty expectations and gave one of the best concerts I have ever seen.

This was my 2nd time seeing Sleater Kinney on their reunion run, and they did not disappoint! Every song made me jump for joy and sing along. Unfortunately, that's more than I can say for a lot of the crowd around me. I didn't get there early enough to be with the people in the pit, presumably knowing the Lion's share of the songs as I did. I happened to be in an entire half of the lower level merely content with standing, staring, and maybe bobbing their heads. Either way, the show was sold out and I had a blast. Sleater Kinney is just fantastic!

Great show! So glad I was able to see this band. Corin's voice is unique, Janet kills it on the drums, and Carrie's guitar and moving skills made this a very entertaining way to spend the evening. If you can catch them in your town you will not regret it!!

What can I say about this show?!?! Hard to believe, but I think they sounded better than when they first started. They were so together and in sync. The opening act, THEESatisfaction, really got the crowd moving. I will be looking for more out of them. From start to finish, Sleater-Kinney brought it. It was loud in the best way possible - the kind of loud you feel vibrating in your chest loud. I am so glad they are back together!

Sleater-Kinney put on a seriously rocking show at The Pageant. They were very energetic throughout the whole performance, which consisted of a great mixture of songs from their whole catalog, including a couple rarely played songs. I would definitely recommend anyone to go to one of their shows. You won't be sorry!

Been listening to Sleater-Kinney for 15 years and finally was able to see them in NC. Such an amazing show. I would say one of the best I ever been right there with Death Cab for Cutie. Janet was awesome on the drums. she was like a powerhouse. Carrie had some sweet footwork rocking out and Corin, had sweet vocals. always loved hearing her voice.

I saw Sleater Kinney last in 1994 at the old 0930 club in DC. Bought tickets for this show on a whim. They are better today than when they were kids!. All the more amazing after a 10 year hiatus. The guitar work was technical, driving and consistent. There is no regular bass player in this group but you wouldn't know it. If you are into drums Janet Weiss plays like Ginger Baker or Carmine Appice from back in the day. You won't find a better indie/punk show today. Best $35 I have spent in this century.

The show was very good with a lot of 70's style rock theatrics. I wasn't that familiar with the band's music or members (except Carrie Brownstein via Portlandia) and went primarily because I'd read reviews of them and thought they would be interesting to see. I've been going to concerts since 1971 and I can tell you that the Sleater-Kinney show is worth attending, if for no reason other than to see their drummer, Janet Weiss. She was a revelation and one of the best drummers I've ever seen; I think I watched her for 95% of the concert (I was in the 2nd level looking down and had a great view). She hits "Bonham-hard" and really gives the band a power and ferocity that I think most drummers would struggle to achieve. Absolutely amazing drummer and easily in the top ten I've ever seen, maybe top five.
