We went Saturday to "Nuctcracker" . This will be the fourth year. It just seems to get better and better. The chase scenes were incredible and I cry every year. The only thing missing was at the end when the new tree grows. I will be there next year when the bew production is scheduled. Yo are part of Christmas for me.

This was a very intense but worthwhile production. I have done a bit of reading on the topic and also was a high school teacher when the actual event occurred, so it was of great personal interest. The "blackboard" was a great aspect of the production, and the sound and lighting were both excellent. I came away feeling enlightened.

Powerful, painful, poignant, preventable. Sound and light designs added a great deal to this great ensemble of young actors. I hesitated seeing this play because I knew it would be upsetting but that's what needs to happen...we need to get VERY upset and then take action. It's now become such an old story....rebellion, anger, drugs, alcohol, mental illness, guns, violence...and ignorance.

This is a romp through the music of the 50s, 60s, and 70s--rock and roll, R&B--by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Great fun, with a high energy, enthusiastic cast working in a small space to put on a terrific show. The audience on Saturday night was totally into it!

Given all the hype surrounding this play, I was expecting to see an extremely thought provoking production. I was excited at the prospect of two incredibly insightful men going toe to toe on such important matters. Unfortunately, I was rather disappointed with the level of exchange between the actors in this fictional account of their possible meeting. I actually heard a few audience members snoring at different times.

essentially, once the play is over, you ask "so what?"... okay, one doesn't need a dozen permutations [of the same situation] to understand that yes, we all play this game of "splitting up" our personalities. script is rather banal, if not prosaic.

While I don't generally love adaptations of works from other media, The City & The City is a favorite novel, brilliantly and imaginatively conceived as a work of speculative fiction. While I didn't think that the production captured all of the nuance of the book, it was quite well-acted, especially Inspector Borlu. I wish the curtain call was such that I could have given him a standing ovation. Still, I think that the production might have been confusing to someone who had not read the novel and was less glorious than reading the novel. It is rare that an adaptation can match the original. This one did not, but kudos to the actors who made this an enjoyable evening.

I saw Aspects of Love when it came the the "big stage" at the Civic Opera House in the 80's. This actors at the Theo Ubique were every bit as talented. The standing ovation they received was well deserved. While the book is not as well known as Phantom, the music is beautiful and it is beautifully performed by Kelli Harrington, Sean Thomas, Colette Todd and Matthew Keffer. It has to be a challenge to act when you are arm's length from the audience but cast is incredible.

Columbinus was absolutely fabulous. The subject matter was covered in a creative way that invented and re-invented they style in which it was done. The production values were excellent--minimal set was ideal; the sound was well suited to the piece; the lighting was spot on; and the acting and directing was amazing. Well done!!!

Never read this play but just became totally immersed as it played out. Leave it to Shakespeare and his tricks, things not always what they seem or appear to be. Great actors, able to keep the shakespearan accent even with thier NY or irish or pimp accent. Enjoyable, unexpected ending, but that made it even better.

I went to see this show with my husband, my 81 year old mom and a good friend. We all loved this show. Dennis Watkins is terrific. We've also seen him at the Magic Parlor. Great cast, beautiful aerialist, heart warming story. Sad to say we saw this on closing night, so we can't send our friends and family. Hopefully the House Theater will reprise this show or another company will produce it.

Although Lifeline's current production is well acted, one can tell that it has been adapted from a novel. Too much of the play requires characters, especially the lead detective, to stop and explain to the audience or other characters what certain terms, events, or actions mean that would flow more fluently in a hundred page book. By the last half hour, the action is excellerated to explain the murder mystery of who shot whom for what reason and knew what when, which shows how the pacing of the adaptation is a bit off.

1. The actors did a poor job of reciting the Shakespearean lines -- with the exception of Isabella, the only actor who actually sounded at home with lines. Angelo speaks so slowly and with such little rhythm or passion, it is not clear he in the play; the Duke as well. The priest's put-on Irish brogue makes the lines harder to understand, as does the "authentic" accents of Claudio and the pimps's street language. And the policeman in the court scene has NO comedic sense at all (as well a bad New York accent) - no one laughed at all during that whole scene. 2. While I am all for nudity in the theatre, the 2 bawdy scenes in act 1 are just gratuitous. If you know Shakespeare, you do not need all that pole dancing and screwing to get how bad things were, and if you don't, well IMHO that licentiousness could have been shown much more creatively by focusing on the acting rather than the fancy set and HBO-like required one nude shot per show

A group of us traveled from the western suburbs to see Fish Eyes. The actors were wonderful (comedic timing was fantastic!), the script brilliant and we all loved the small, intimacy of the theater. Would definitely recommend it! Seating says Gen Adm, but you actually exchange your ticket for a seat when you arrive. Since we were with a large group, they put us in the back 3 rows. It is a small theater, so we could see, but it would have been nice to be a little closer. There isn't much slope to the seating so we did all find ourselves peering from side to side to get a better view over the people in front of us.

I am normally a huge fan of any Second City show. I bring out of town guests every chance I get. I have never been displeased with a show...until this one. It was terrible. This show replaced the standard and highly anticipated references to pop-culture, politics and relevant cultural happenings with obscure historic events. The little humor that was delivered was lost in drawn out and weakly improvised sketches. Lastly, there were too many references to suicide. Really?! I feel like I have a laid back sense of humor and I am rarely offended, but almost every sketch was resolved in some way with a reference to suicide. I would definitely take a pass on this show.

A fantastic play that uses humor and some dramatic moments to take you back in time to the lives of Peter & Andrew when they encountered Jesus. It brought this part of the Bible to life!! Absolutely delightful performance and thoroughly entertaining. There were several children in the audience and they all seemed to be mesmerized through the entire show. Great magic tricks and a little bit of Cirque in the aerial performance, a bunny, a bird, many eggs and lots of physical humor...a little burlesque and vaudeville...there's something for everyone, young and old and everyone in between. Imaginative staging...the truck became another character. Go see this NOW!

I thought the adaptation of the book to a play was excellent and really captured the story, much more so than the movie did. The performers, scenery, etc. were great. The only complaint is that sitting too close (rows A-C) is not recommended due to lights hitting audience eyes and the theater is cold.

Had a great time. The music brought me back to a time when life was less stressful, less techy and just plain simple. * Just thought I should mention that Hot Tix stated this event was general admission so my friend and I purchased our tickets separately. When we arrived to the event we learned it was not general admission. Luckily the girls working the will call window noticed there were 2 tickets sold individually and thought it strange. So they went ahead and assigned us seats next to each other. Smart Girls!

As Chicago struggles to understand the intense violence that rocks our city, this daring, original show explores a handful of recent events and the impact they have on each of us. The historical context of today's crimes with those of the city's past is fascinating, as a talented cast brings to life the daily reality in our communities and dares us to all to take action.

Amazing performance. The show had no wholes. Alexis nailed the role. Was humorous , tragic and a well written story. This was a better and a more true version of Billie Holiday than "Lady sings the blues" and she certainly sounded just like Billie Holliday. I got goosebumps. I sat in the front row and was glad I did. I just wanted to hug Alexis at the end for giving a wonderful portrayal of her. A must see..

t was witty, well constructed, using a combination of multiple characters acting as narrators, and really strong acting. I was especially impressed with the pacing. The adaptation returns to the original 1st Edition source material, before changes got made such as the school principal's character getting changed and renamed Michael Rossi. While the set was a little strange -- shipping crates -- and eclectic flea market furnishings -- the direction rode a very delicate balance between high camp and treating the subject matter seriously. I really liked the way the director "borrowed" the theme music, not just from the original Peyton Place film, but also from other 50s soap opera films like Written on the Wind, Summer Place, All that Heaven Allows and even Psycho. You could tell the audience really enjoyed it. I highly recommend it. I forgot how much of the original I remembered.

This is my second time at Lookinglass and both times have been excellent. Great location, easy to get to and wonderful performances. This time I saw Bengal Tiger having heard of it when it was on Broadway w/Robin Williams. Didn't know exactly what to expect...parts are brutal, but then that's war. Excellent performances...to the point where I felt true disgust and dislike for both soldiers and their behavior...but again, that's war. Seems that war doesn't bring out the best in any of us. Very irreverent....I love that! Interesting that the "tiger" had a tiger look without any costuming. Go see this play...it hurts....but it's a side of war that can't be captured in a 30 second sound bite on CNN.

Wow! I went totally not prepared. I had heard good things from critical reviews and I adore the Looking Glass theater so I went with high expectations. What I wasn't prepared for was the violence and blood. A character graphicly slits his wrist in a hospital bed and let em tell you there was so much blood I had to keep looking away. The people around me were equally repulsed. The writing seemed particularly anti-American, the American soilders don't make it and are haunted by one another. Again a lot of blood and they pull no punches.

Quality was not as good as a well-done high-school production. I took my husband here for his birthday and he hated it. Two voices were good, three were mediocre. The five cast members didn't fit together -- for a musical review composed mainly of romantic songs, they were physically incompatible. One (very pretty) woman towered over all four of her co-performers. One woman was heavily muscled -- not romantic at all.

My mother always told me "if you don't have anything nice to say, say nothing", so I hope my feedback will be useful. The young man who played the lead has a bright future ahead and the supporting cast was just that... "supporting". The shortfall for me was the actual play. Supposedly it is set in the period shortly after Obama's 2008 victory but I failed to see the connection to a young man who expects good things to happen without any effort being initiated...looking for a handout and using deceptive practices does not have anything in common with the US electing it's first mixed race president. I was not familiar with this theater group and even though my first experience was not one of my favorites I will continue to consider their next productions...hoping they have better material to work with in the future.

We weren't sure what to expect when we booked this show. The 3 people in our group were shocked at the number of people in the cast. With no intermission, the play went fast and kept our interest for the entire 90 minutes, in fact we couldn't believe it was over when the cast came on stage at the end. There was language that could offend some people. Lots of short "stories" acted out in the back of a taxi makes one appreciate all of the things that taxi drivers may have to deal with on a daily basis. The theater is very small so there are no bad seats in the house.

The play contained interesting characters, but it took a long time to figure out who was who and how they were connected. There didn't seem to be a reason for so many different locales in Australia...a place about which we know so little that concentrating on the place took away from concentrating on the actors. At least it all came clear in the end! IF you had someone with you who was awake throughout!+

Main character, Zed, played by Kurt Brocker, appears to actually be GRAY when the play begins and with each scene it becomes obvious he is receiving a transfusion backstage. But maybe it's just the play's author Ms Dillman that brings him to life. This was a delightful couple of hours at a theater I had never visited....but I will return. Great time with a variety of comedic styles! Get there early if you want to have a dedicated table next to you for placing drinks etc. Be warned some comedians are extremely vulgar so just keep that in mind before bringing mixed company. Also there's a 2 drink minimum. One thing that would enhance the experience would be a 5 minute intermission before the last act to allow you to comfortably close out tabs rather than have servers distracting you from the show. This is particularly an issue with relatively larger groups (4+ people) on a single tab. Definitely check it out!

If you took out the "f" bombs and other curse words this play would last 40 minutes, not 1 hours and 40 minutes. With that said it was very entertaining...lots of laugh out loud moments and some somber statements about we flawed humans. The cousin Julio stole the show in my opinion, but it was difficult to believe that he and Jackie were the same age...a little MIss Clairol for Julio's hair is in order. Do NOT go see this show if you are offended by language and you didn't figure out from the title that it could be a bit "off color". Otherwise, a really good production. My compliments to the set designer. It's been a long time since I have seen such great moving stage components. It reminded me of the old Goodman when the first round of applause came as the curtain rose and the stage setting was revealed. I don't recall seeing a play at Steppenwolf where the entire upper areas were so exposed....reminded me of when they first opened and there was such pride in the construction of the theater that allowed so many production options....this showed how massive it is. Great for actors and audiences.

My mother, my 16 year old daughter and I went to Hellcab together. Although we all enjoyed it, my daughter and I loved it! I understand the characters are based on real cab passengers of the writer, or other cabbies, and that fact made the show especially compelling. My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed these gritty characters with their often foul language, but my mother (in her 70's) found them a bit too rough for her liking.

You must see this. Lookingglass does the most unique productions and the acting never disappoints. I was concerned their shows would go mainstream due to their location (the heart of tourism) to appeal to a wider audience, but they remain unique.

Funny opening scenes glide deftly into the more biting confrontations. Just when you start to get tired of the mother's insensitivity and the daughter's whining, the "big reveal" saves the day. Do wish the sound was better in the theater. I missed several exchanges and my older mother had trouble hearing all the way through.

Waaaaay to long. Hour and a half felt like a year. Beautifully executed. Great pacing, lots of visual and I assume at least an accurate adaptation of the book. Actors served multiple roles deftly and with spirit. But it felt like a children's book adapted for adults, who are used to sitting for long performances. Took to long to get to the resolution. Otherwise, again, well done.

Too long, the play itself is absolutely not interesting, one good thing to say is that actors did a great job playing their characters. Otherwise, it was a waste of my time. I brought two of my friends along who were very disappointed as well.

It is not easy to make the marvelous Rogers and Hammerstein music and lyrics fresh when one has heard them countless times in the movies, on stage, etc. This revue is delightful, clever and extremely well sung. Kudoos to all the performers especially the tall blond woman (sorry I did not read the program notes so do not know her name) who has an amazing voice.

I love theater and can always find something I like about a play. This one had it's moments where scenes came together, but in general it paused too often, while the audience was made to sit a wait for something to happen. Only the best of the best actors can sit on stage and do nothing and make you love them. These guys were good but not wonderful.

Not a comedy, which is what I thought from the write up, but a very interesting drama and it has a strange twist you will not see coming. Enjoyed the play, worth seeing. Wonder about how some people come up with such stories. Guess that's why their playwriters. GO.

Garsin Kanin's play Born Yesterday remains current because Washington politics never changes. Big money trying to buy government favors is an underlying theme of this well known play made into an even more popular film starring Judy Holliday, William Holden, and Broderick Crawford. The cast may not have the star quality of the movie cast but they do an outstanding job in fleshing out their characters. The set is outstanding perfectly recreating an expensive hotel suite with views of the White House. The actor who portrays a former Attorney General, now representing the interests of a steel magnet, brings a sympathetic quality to a man knowing he is abusing the system he once represented. It is no wonder that he previously won a Jefferson Award. I highly recommend this play.

Funny, funny, funny! Typical, topical Second City stuff. Nice, new UP theater. The ONLY criticism is some of it was hard to hear, so it probably even better then I thought. Be forwarned ... the show runs about 90 minutes as stated, but they improvise for another 30 (without giving you the opportunity to leave) so pay your parking meter accordingly.

Bud Not Buddy is an excellent adaptation of a beautiful story. Bud is an orphan tossed from home to home. He finally has had enough and sets off to find his father--here-to-fore unknown. This adaptation is an excellent example of Narrative or Chamber Theatre. The ensemble cast comes in and out of the multiple characters including much of the books beautiful narrative. The young audience responded --sometimes with laughter and sometimes with tears as Buddy faces various trials and adventures. When he finally finds the person on his flyer--and that person rejects him--we all hold our collective breaths. I recommend this play for families with children in 2nd or 3rd grade and older. I also recommend reading the book.
