The venue was the perfect size, seats were great (comfortable too) and Madeleine Peyroux was fantastic. She was very engaging and sounded amazing. Loved her band as well. One of my better concert experiencees and would definitely go again!

Madeleine Peyroux is the Billy Holliday of our time, yet she defies definition with her unique vocal style and interpretation of classics, as well her multi-level songwriting. It was a tough crowd at the Villa Montalvo, but dear Madeleine managed to melt everyone's hearts by playing and singing from the ground through her heart to the top of her head. The band is superb. They peaked with tight arrangements of traditional jazz. Each musician is a virtuoso in their own light. Ms. Peyroux is still relatively young, and while she has grown significantly in the last few years, the stars are still her playground, and hopefully there is a lot more to come from this beautiful songbird. I first learned of Madeleine Peyroux simply by accident...my husband bought me her debut CD as a Christmas Stocking stuffer (he just thought the name was interesting!). I fell in like with her Billy Holiday, Diana Krall-esque sound. The concert was no less enchanting. Madeleine did not disappoint. She threaded a colorful écharpe of folk, blues and jazz that culminated into a live performance worth recording! I'm anxiously awaiting the next opportunity to see and hear Madeleine live!. In the interim I've become a collector of Madeleine recorded sounds. On my way to pick up Bare Bones (2009)!

Madeleine performed well but her choice of music left a lot to be desired. Her new album is by far her weakest to date and too much of the evening was spent on this material (Our Lady of Pigalle seemed to go on for ever). It was unfortunate because she can be much much more entertaining.

Madeline is one of the best contemporary jazz singers alive. I think last years concert was better however; this one was just as good. I can t wait till next year.

French-American chanteuse Madeleine Peyroux she of the striking Billie Holiday voice played again to a packed house at the Lisner. And it was grand. With a capable quartet of guitar/mandolin, keyboards/accordion, bass and drums, she added her guitar musings and an array of songs that pleased her audience. The first few bars of several songs drew immediate applause as she embarked on recognizable offerings from her earlier recordings. Ms. Holiday was less in evidence this night, but there were subtle aspects of Peggy Lee and Bessie Smith. Standard Peyroux fare such as I m Alright , Don t Cry Baby , Lovesick Blues and Dance Me To The End Of Love sparked the evening s offerings. She also gave us tunes- all penned by her from her latest CD Bare Bones. These included Love and Treason , River of Tears, Homeless Happiness and her personal Odetta anthem I Must Be Saved Songs with a Parisian flare used an accordion, mandolin and subdued bass lines, including If You Love Me , Don t Wait Too Long , Bare Bones Our Lady of Pigalle and J ai Deux Amours . She closed out a very entertaining evening with a delightful surprising Holiday-esque I Hear Music followed by a catchy Obama celebratory "Something Grand" as encored to an appreciative audience. Kelly Joe Phelps started things off by playing what seemed to be the identical song about seven times. A guitarist myself, I was duly impressed with his considerable technique but hardly by his playlist for the evening. Madeline was miked poorly, and mixed worse. It was as if the guy at the board put on a blindfold and earplugs and started pulling levers and twisting knobs, and then went to sleep. The microphone pattern was too narrow, and the EQ was boomy at its best. Despite all this, Madeline was a trooper, the band was amazing--true musicians each with multiple talents. Her new music is not as easy on the ear as her prior CDs, but I'm going to buy it and spend more time listening.

Peyroux has such a fabulous voice, but the combination of apparently bad miking, and letting her voice get away from her made for a disappointing performance in general. Of course, there were several staggeringly beautiful pieces, but mostly not so good. I still love her albums, which are produced such that her voice and music are in perfect form. Not so live though.

I really like Madeleine Peyroux, and I very much so enjoyed the concert she put on. I thought the warm-up singer was dreadful (he seemed to be fighting his guitar). I also think Madeleine could have skipped the background on why she wrote "Something Grand" (to celebrate Obama). I'm not a Republican but I don't like politics at concerts. Also, as a keen amateur photographer, I don't understand why they did not allow photographs to be taken. It's not like the concert was some sort of incredible sound and light show that had to be kept secret.

Madeleine Peyroux provided a wonderful evening of entertainment. Her band is excellent and her vocals cannot be matched. She performed a variety of standards and new songs and the evening was a highlight of my times at the Birchmere. I cannot wait to see her again,

An time either come to town I will be there. So much more there that comes through with recordings unlike a lot of acts. The heartfelt was genuine. Each of their sounds is different from each other as it is from everything that sounds the same today. Each deserves recognition for being true to strengths. Nice mix of covers and originals from each person. Stellar back up for each.

Madeleine Peyroux was absolutely brilliant. Before this performance, we knew very little about her or her work. We were mesmerized, as was the rest of the audience. A "simple" electric guitar and a bass were masterfully played, harmonies were spot on and repartee was funny and interesting. I (not my wife) have been a longtime fan of Rickie Lee Jones. She sucked. If you see Madeleine Peyroux on at any venue, the ticket is well-worth it, not to be said for RLJ.

Madeleine Peyroux was great, but Rickie Lee Jones was terrible. Half the balcony left before the end of her set. Their final number together, "As Time Goes By", was terrific. With the structure of having Madeleine singing with her, Rickie was able to pull it together. However, left to her own devices, she rambled in a sad way.

My wife and I expected to be entertained by a dynamic singer, but instead it was dull and overly inappropriately political to the point where people made comments and walked out. It was very uncomfortable afterwards and others seemed to feel the same way. She also seemed to be under the influence of something perhaps she had one too many?

Wow! This concert was really good. I was wondering how the two of them could possibly mesh in the same show - their styles are so different but they pulled if off. Ricki Lee Jones was really spectacular-first time I have seen her live and she is such a talent. Great connection with guitarist and percussion/vibes guy. Totally enjoyed her set. They even did two songs together as well before intermission. No "Chuckie" however - a small disappointment. Madeleine Peyroux was very good as well. Unfortunately the seats at the Wilbur were so small and incredibly uncomfortable that physical pain limited how much I could listen and enjoy her set. Not to take away from her performance at all however. Just too much music in awful seats. Completely recommend this show - they were great.

3 hours of pure bliss. Started with Rickie Lee Jones and her amazing percussionist and guitarist. A consummate storyteller whose voice has maintained its haunting quality over the years. Then Madeleine Peyroux joined her for a couple of numbers. They sound great together, the musicians they travel with are wonderful. Madeleine Peyroux creates an intimate trio with a bass player and Jon Harrington, guitarist from Steely Dan. She plays the guitar and uke. Her set is more polished, which I don't prefer generally, but she sounded great.

Strange evening at the Peyroux and Jones concert. Ricki Lee was unrecognizable, no stage presence, nothing coherent to say to the audience, and struggled to control her breath and high notes. When Madeleine joined her on stage they sang the 1970's hit "Rock On" - lethargically and with odd political commentary. It seemed more like a skit on Saturday Night Live than a professional concert. Madeleine was funny, charming and melodious. She struggled tuning her instruments while the audience waited. No road crew traveling with this band?

Madelaine and her band were sensational; we wanted more. Rickie Lee was a complete yawn; she appeared to be half asleep, we could hardly understand a word she sang or said, the music was uninteresting, and her gig was about half an hour too long.

Loved Rickie Lee. Inventive, creative treatments of tunes. She kept the gratuitous political nonsense to a minimum. Can't say the same for Madeleine who managed to infuse many tunes with enough politics to spoil it for me. I don't care where you come from politically. Shut up and sing. And if you want to make a difference DO SOMETHING -like Ashton Kutcher.

I guess Ricki Lee jones has some fans, but I'm not one of them. Her abrasive, out of tune singing made it hard to appreciate Peyroux' following set. Peyroux' performance was delightful, her singing complex and nuanced with a strongly supportive group. Give her a chance to do it alone!

The concert started with Rickie that took well over the hour and than they had to change stage... Madeleine started singing about 90 or so after the concert already started .:(( Out of all very cool songs she has , she chose the most unknown and not engaging... If it was not for bas and guitar guys ,along with Rickie's drummer, this concert would have been just one star. Almost complete disappointment .

Have been a fan of her recordings and read the mixed reviews of her recent concerts with some misgivings, but had never seen her before in live performance. Definitely not the same person. Had my suspicions when I saw a chair on stage- as prior experience has demonstrated this is typically a bad omen if your not BB King. Sadly this was the case tonight. Appeared as though the thrill was definitely gone. Her appeal to me ( and others I imagine) has been her creativity in using a somewhat distinct- if range-bound-vocal instrument. We had hoped she would have shown some of this creativity in her selection of songs tonight- but it was not to be. Seemed stuck in the same tempo and genre for 3/4 of her 80 / scheduled 90 min 'performance'. Just did not seem like she wanted to give much of her range to the audience. Repeated political and snarky comments or facial gestures got to be annoying and seemed inappropriately amateurish for someone in the business for 20 yrs. Have read that she is generally withdrawn and more uncomfortable than most performers on stage- so maybe she was trying to compensate- but she seemed like she was waaay too comfortable in not playing the music straight-up. Lost some of her audience mid-way through and most sat while calling her back to complete an encore to finish her set- and time.

I've loved Madeleine Peyroux's music but had never seen her live. This concert, however, was a debacle. It began with an unannounced opening act who played by herself for 50 incredibly tedious minutes. The people sitting near me were in shock by the boredom and lack of connection the performer had. Then there was a twenty minute break after which Madeleine Peyroux came on. She is EXTREMELY low-key and lacking in energy, sadly. She doesn't try to relate to the audience. Also, for whatever reasons, even though she's only about 40, she sat in a chair the entire time. Furthermore, her use of the microphone was troubling. She often moved her head away from it which made her soft voice even harder to hear. The only good thing I can say is that she had a sensational duo backing her up -- especially the guitarist. He was a pleasure. Peyroux's set lasted about 80 minutes or so. As the old joke restaurant joke goes: the food was terrible -- and such small portions.

I've listened to a couple of Madeleine Peyroux's recordings, which were in the jazz vein. So I was expecting that style of music. Instead, it was bluesy-folksy style, which I was not expecting. She has a nice voice and a nice comedic sense and the guitarist and bassist were very good. When she began bringing in her political opinions into the show, I walked out halfway through.

The music was good - the best part was the incredible Jon Herrington on guitar. We sat in the middle not far in front of sound board. However, the bass was the loudest, then the guitar and the quietest was Madeleine Peyroux. Her sound was set so it was muddy with very little mid and high frequencies. In addition to having trouble hearing her well, I think we lost the nuances of her style with it being so muddy. She didn't sound as good as expected, but I think it was due to the sound settings. The other issue is, we came to see Madeleine Peyroux, not an opening act first. We drove 2 hours to get there and with the Birchmere procedures, we get there at 5 PM to get a number for seating, and with the opening act, Madeleine did not start until 8:30 PM. That's a long time to be waiting around and sitting.

I have never seen Madeleine live. The ticket price was generally too high. This was not inexpensive, but after listening to her recordings for years, and reading that her live performances were good, I finally took the plunge. Attending shows at the Birchmere require effort if one wants to have a choice seat. Many hours to be precise. Once the show began, she had a standup bass and a guitar player, both of whom were exceptional, she seemed disheveled. Her voice was bland. She did not have that exceptional phrasing that she shows on her recordings. We are all humans, not machines, and maybe this night her humanity showed and she just played, but did not perform. The Birchmere is one of the top listening rooms in the country. A performers A game needs to be on display, unless it doesn't matter to them

First we were introduced to Jeff LeBlanc and he has a smooth style - and wit! Totally enjoyable. Then, Madeleine entranced. She can set a mood and draw you in completely! The band was amazing, the strings were delightful and you could tell they all loved what they're doing. Pure artistry! Thank you for the experience! The location is nice too. Madeleine Peyroux was kind of a disappointment. The venue was great, in terms of acoustics and comfort in the Space at Westbury, although the wine they served (only in crummy plastic cups) was tragic. Peyroux seemed drunk or high, insulted the audience a couple of times for not laughing or clapping at her weak jokes. On several songs she sang out of rhythm with the music in such a way that was off-putting. She has amazing pipes and the songs she chose were lovely, but she just wasn't up to the task of some of the tougher ones. All in all, a C or C+ effort. Maybe she'd have put more of herself into things at a more famous venue...who knows?

Mrs. Peyroux was fantastic. She brought with her a large band with a string quartet. Her band seemed like a bunch of highly skilled jazz musicians, who got great joy in improvising when their solos came around. It was fun to watch. The venue was only 1/4 full, if that. Ms Peyroux looked like she'd rather have been somewhere else. Actually rude to the audience when her obtuse jokes fell flat. This is a fantastic venue to see a performance, although this show was barely 25% full, which as a performer must have been hard, she had a tight excellent band, but at times I felt Ms. Peyroux was bored, it was an ok show, but I was disappointed in Ms. Peyroux, I guess I was expecting much more as I really love her music, and it fell short of my expectations, it was not bad but just average but great venue and would go there again.

Was so looking forward to this concert because I have enjoyed Madeleine's music for a few years and thought an inperson event would be spectacular...also, my sister had attended her show earlier this year and raved about it. I love MP's style, music, voice and respect for the origins of jazz. I looked forward to this for weeks and took my wife out for a "fine evening of jazz." But MP started late, was dressed far more casually than the rest of her band, criticized repeatedly the fact that she was in a "casino" (why is that a bad thing??), made a lot of flat jokes, clearly wasn't happy to be there, performance was uninspired and tired, then left early with no encore. You lost me, MP.

A couple of years ago in Victoria BC Madeleine's concert was terrific. She was clear, connected w/ her band and the audience. Her voice was incredible. We just saw her again ~~ such disappointment. She was clearly under the influence (and it lasted throughout). She sang flat & sharp, was on key for one lovely French tune. She rambled, stumbled & her banter was disrespectful to the audience. If you're not up to playing a concert, kindly cancel & refund the ticket price. It looks like something's gone wrong in her life. I wish her the best... but I won't be buying a ticket soon.

Madeleine Peyroux has an amazing voice, I own all of her CD's. Along with her great voice I also enjoyed her good-natured banter with the audience. I was familiar with Madeleine music through her Albums. What i wish i had know before i went to the concert was that onstage her behavior is STRANGE. Her introduction to the songs either made no sense or were references to drugs or immoral subjects. During the instrumental portions of the songs, Madeliene's behavior was a huge distraction. I will say that a percentage of the audience acted like they were enjoying the show. Unfortunately for me it was a total miss.

Madeline was so full of herself after Nellie Mackay's lively, gracious opening it was like a banal storm had blown in. Madeline was disrespectful to her band, got her "groove on" in a grab for attention while the spot hit one of her band mates. Her voice was mediocre. We left during the third set. Everyone around us was talking, obviously not into her act.

This was my first exposure to this artist. I really liked her voice and enjoyed the music. The concert experience was strange. There was no opening act. There were no CD's for sale. She seemed like she was not interested to perform. She did not even do an encore. The venue was not sold out and this was her first concert in Buffalo so maybe she was disappointed in the sales. What is most disturbing is that she seemed to put down the city itself. Maybe this is her humor but it was very sarcastic. She even stated at one point that she loved her country and she loved Buffalo. This was after making several political comments against Washington. So one could surmise that she liked Buffalo about as much as she liked Washington politics. I was here to see her perform and would have appreciated some indication that she appreciated the fans that came to see her.

Madeline Peyroux was fantastic! I always love seeing performances at the Berklee Performance space.

The venue was more supper club than concert, with patrons wandering around and talking throughout the performance. Despite reserved seating, many concert-goers purchased less expensive seats in the rear then jumped down front as the featured performer began her set. The audience was definitely not respectful of the performer. As we entered, management informed us firmly that once we left the venue we could not return, yet did little to maintain order within the theater. Ushers were ineffective at finding seats or quieting noisemakers, although one was particularly adept at shining an exceptionally bright flashlight in patrons' eyes. On the other side of the stage, the performer was not all that considerate of her audience either, waiting over half an hour after the opening act had left the stage to make her appearance. She forgot lyrics on at least two occasions and appeared to be in an altered state for most of her set. She thought it important enough to tell us on at least three separate occasions that she had eaten lobster for dinner! I noted to my wife that after this experience, I vastly prefer Madeleine Peyroux as a studio performer, where presumably someone can ensure that she deliver a quality performance. Not all was lost however, as we did learn about Mark Goldenberg, who was the outstanding exception to an otherwise regrettable evening.

No mention of an opening act was made in the ticket or the theatre. The opening act was an exceedingly funny lady by the name of Nellie McKay and she had us in stitches with her humorous songs. When Madeleine came on she finally introducted Nellie and the show began. She performed all our favorites as well as a few songs we did not know. Her band is excellent and I would see her again if she came back to Boston. The Berklee is also a great venue.

Solid performance by an immensely talented singer with an excellent band backing her up. Madeleine's voice is amazing but the mix on occasion was a bit off. I think they were trying not to make her mic too loud and drown out the musicians, but at times I think her volume was a little too low. It was a good show and good mix of both old songs and new and seemed to flow pretty well. Other reviews I've seen talked about how funny she is, but in this show she barely said anything and just kind of went from one song to the next. She started to tell stories on two occasions, but they were very short and she seemed to tail off at the end. The show seemed short and I'd guess she played for 75 minutes, although I didn't exactly keep time. She'd definitely worth seeing, but you get the sense that the band should be playing in front of 100 people in some cool jazz bar instead of a concert venue.

What a difference from the CD's. It was audio torture. She should give up the impersonations and just try to be herself. There were two songs that were bearable, other than that I wanted to run from the building. She is also obviously very uncomfortable on stage. Her musicians were very talented but it did not make up for her. Nelly McKay was great though I would go see her again in a second.

I have to say that I was very disappointed with the concert. On the positive side, the musicality was wonderful. The accompanists were talented and outstanding. The opening act was terrific as well. But, it was so sad to me that Madeleine's voice was unintelligible. Her voice is usually crystal clear and her lyrics are wonderful. But in this performance she hunched over the mike and her words were garbled. The only two songs that were well understood were the two that she sang in French. For these , she stood up straight and sang out clearly....beautiful. I knew many of the songs so knew what they were about, but my partner did not. The concert was a waste for him. We walked away very disappointed and not at all pleased. And soooo sad.

Strange that neither she nor her opening act were introduced. I had at least hoped to get the correct pronunciation of her last name! I had hoped for more of the torchy or bluesy attitude from her albums. The delivery was sometimes uneven but heartfelt and perhaps more genuine- definitely not phoned in. The band was tight. You could tell they loved playing together. The opener, Nelly McKay, was quirky, intelligent and fun.

Really amazing show. Great opening with Nellie mckay and Madeleine was also great, apart from her not so good jokes... But the music completely made up for it! She was amazing! :-)

I love Peyroux's work and have waited for years to see her. I imagine anyone can have an off night. Some songs were just perfect- but entire show lacked energy, lacked connection. At first I thought the mixing was off, but soon realized it was Madeleine just not having the juice at times. Plus, it was the shortest concert I have ever attended. Maybe I expected too much? Kind of felt like she phoned it in...... HOWEVER, the opener, Nellie McKay, was delightful!!

Both acts (Nellie McKay opening up for Madeleine Peyroux) were worthy of a sold out house. It was disappointing to see such enormously talented vocalists - and in Ms. Peyroux' case, a gifted back up band - play to such a light turnout. Both of their acts would of been more satisfying in a smaller, more intimate venue. Ms. McKay's solo act was especially dynamic and entertaining in her all-too-brief opening set. Her stage presence is lively, full of wit, charm, and artistry - leaving you with just enough mystery to want to hear more, and know more about her. She presents a thoroughly engaging persona in a pixie-like form, not to mention she is a seriously good musician with a very skilled singing voice. Her original songs were very clever and comedic commentary on contemporary themes. Madeleine Peyroux followed with a much more subdued tone, surrounded by adroit jazz and pop musicians. Her voice has a seasoned and emotionally evocative quality that contrasts with her youthful and unassuming appearance. Her energy level seemed to wane from time to time during the course of her performance, but somehow that seemed to jive with her music. She is no doubt a very gifted and sophisticated musician who seems to still be searching for what it is exactly she wants to say, and share, with her listeners - which is a sure fire sign of a true blue artist, as opposed to an entertainer. Developing how she shares her uniquely personal musical expression with an audience will no doubt build as she stays true to herself. I look forward to hearing more from her.

Voice was incredible with unique style of intonation Lyrics and music were counterimposed into a dance of the sublime. Material was mainly new, too bad but understandable.

I learned of Madeline through Pandora as a similar artist to my radio station so I have not been so familiar with her songs. But the songs that I have come to learn and love she played. She was very warm and recptive to her audiance and was quite funny. She has smart sense of humor. Her music is very romatic and true. Her voice is raw but sweet. The venue itself was really nice too. The seating was a bit tight but nothing too out of ordinary. Acustics were great. Parking was easy too.

At first she seemed stunned by how "polite" and "nice" the LA audience were, but she was surprisingly funny and made everyone loosen up, including herself, for the second half. Then her voice flourished and the music just filled the music hall. The band was amazing as well.

The venue was nice...Luckman Fine Arts Complex has a nice intimate atmosphere. Madeleine Peyroux has evolved beyond her old jazz style of music. She is now in a whole new class of her own. with some blues, jazz and with some alternative sounds and lyrics. What makes her music more enjoyable is that she has the persona and the cute sense of humor to make her alternative style of her music more enjoyable. Her voice is now even more distinct. She has aquired her own sound!!! Her own style and it's very refreshing and enjoyable.

Madeleine Peyroux is an awesome talent, her recordings are played a lot on my stereo. I enjoyed this live performance (second time I've seen her live) and her band is great too. Only complaint is that they only played for about one hour and change, encore was only one song...

I love her cd's, but I was extremely let down in her live performance. She was constantly out of tune, and seemed like she did not care. Was dressed like a bum from the street, and was overall, terrible. I do have to give her musicians credit, they were very good. If i could get my money back, I would!

This concert was a great time. Cozy, Sexy, Moody - Her band members are such gifted musicians. It was hard not to enjoy. Yes, she sang her French Song and I was about swooning. Madeleine's voice was like Chocolate Goodness.

Sunny War was a surprise opening since she is so understated. Quietly entered and then hit the blues like she was born to channel Waters and Blind Lemon. Autistic in demeanor and a voice that cut the lyrics in two. Buy this woman's CD. This was my first time seeing Madeleine. LOVE all her music. But felt like she was not fully here. The new album coming out (in June) will be interesting. She is maturing and the music follows the vein. It was a pleasure to finally see M.P. live, and will go again when she returns to Oregon, but the concert did not have the emotive quality I get from her albums.

Madeleine Peyroux was a very good concert. The range of music she played was excellent and really showcased her astounding voice. She was backed by a terrific four piece ensemble (the piano player was unbeleivably good!). Madeleine played mostly new songs, many of which will find their niche in her 'best"of " category. But that said, I would have liked to hear a few more of her more well-known hits, especially the standards. Her voice is so well suited to those! My only complaint is that the folks at the Aladdin should be a little more attentive to little things like introducing the acts they present rather than just having them wander onstage. It's just a little declasse the way they do it.

Madeleine Peyroux's concert was like a private soiree with a select group of appreciative fans. She knew we love to hear her, and we did. But -- going out, I overheard the amazed and wowed comments of several folks who DIDN'T already know of her and were brought there by friends -- come to think of it, I brought someone like that with me -- and they love her now, too.

Love her voice, great sound to the band, but I was looking for more - more of a segue between songs, more rapport with the audience. This felt tired and casual. The audience was pumped to see her but it didn't feel the same from them.
