Martin has brought it every time I've seen him. Great guitar player, unbelievable voice (the range! and always a sonic adventure with his instrument mimics), funny and an all-around nice guy.

I've loved his recordings so when his tour took him to The Ark in Ann Arbor Michigan, I wanted to kill two birds with one stone - go to the historic Ark for a concert and see Martin Sexton . WOW! What an experience! His warm-up/back-up band The Ryan Montbleau Band was musically superb as well as unique in their sound and lyrics - all original and very interesting. Sexton then came on and simply blew us all away with his crystal clear voice and remarkable range and technique. If I were to voice any constructive criticism at all, it would be that I would have enjoyed hearing "DIner" , Angeline, and Hallelujah. Other than that, my son and I were simply amazed that a talent like that existed. We'll go again if we ever get the chance.

First time at a Martin Sexton show and I was enthralled with the performance! The range of his voice and how he uses it is amazing. I saw him with the band, which was great as well, but I'm a sucker for solo's, too. Would have liked to see more solo performance. Overall, I would see him again in an instant!!! :)

First time in Ann Arbor, drove 3.5 hrs to this show, and the show was under 2 hrs, so that's the only downside, two shows in 1 night = short shows, but man oh man was it sweet while it lasted.

After years of enjoying Martin Sexton recordings, I finally jumped on the opportunity to hear him live. From dozens of friends I had heard nothing but good things, and many went so far as to say he was the best live performer they'd ever seen. I can now certainly put him in my top 5! After taking the stage with a relaxed gait and expression, he immediately brought the audience (full of devout fans, but also Sexton virgins) in with a bit of humor before launching into a trademark finger-picked riff on the guitar. For the next 90 minutes he kept everyone totally engaged with virtuoso playing, stories about his lyrics, and a slew of songs that ranged from moving ballad to rockabilly two-step and everything in between. His writing is harmonically, rhythmically, and lyrically intelligent and each tune is full of surprises. Sexton dazzles as a vocalist as well -- many numbers included vocoder/talk box solos, beat-boxing using his guitar as an implement, and scatting along with his own improvisations. His impressive range (probably between 3-4 octaves) lends itself well to these effects, but also to the difficult task of crafting memorable melodies song after song. Of particular mention is Sexton's opening act, The Ryan Montbleau Band. One of the few openers to ever get my attention, this sextet presents an enticing blend of folk, soul, R&B, and a tinge of bluegrass. Montbleau sang lyrics that made me pay attention, and the vibe of the ensemble was inspiring. Every member was smiling, making eye contact with one another, and playing damn well in the process. They have an upcoming album produced by Sexton, and backed him for about half of his show. I've already purchased several tracks on iTunes, and so should you.

I've been waiting to see Marty for 5 or 6 years now and it was great! I thought the show was a little bit short, but likely because I was amped to see him. It was made even better by the fact that Ryan Montbleau is the opener. I know Ryan through a friend, so I've seen him a bunch of times, going back to when he was just a guy and a guitar with no following to now. His band,(and now Marty's band) are phenomenal!!!

Martin Sexton is even better live. I have never seen a man hit all those high notes who was not an opera singer. He is definitely a musician's-musician, so talented and versatile. I can't believe more people do not know about him.

This was the 3rd time in as many years my wife and I have seen Martin Sexton play locally in MA. Two years ago we saw him at an outdoor show in Lowell, MA which was amazing. Although he played solo, without a back up band, his energy and music choice was great which included more of his earlier personal work as well as some mixed music that included some great Led Zeppelin riffs. Last year we saw him again at Berkley Performance Center in Boston, MA, another great solo show. We were very excited to see him play The House of Blues, this time accompanied with a band. Again, I was expecting a solid performance with a mix of both heavier folk/rock as well as some personal songs. in summary I was very disappointed with his song choice. Although a few of the new songs introduced off his new CD, Sugarcoat were pretty good, the other song choices were mostly mello and boring. He played very little if any of his early work (i.e; did not play "the journey" or "beast in me" etc). He did very little with utilizing his voice box instrument which he is well versed at and di nothing creatively different with his songs, mixes, solo's etc... Additionally, his encore was weak. He played only one song and was done. Knowing that much of his early career roots came from playing in the streets of Boston, I expected a more emotional performance, yet standing only 3 rows from him on stage, I felt his heart may not have been in last nights performance.

Greetings. I write to you all pumped about music. This is the second time my mind's been blown this month by old-favorite local bands of mine at the new Mecca of Boston Live Music, House of Blues. I was lucky enough to witness John Brown's Body, America's favorite 'homegrown' reggae band, reach a new height in their career in the town they came up in. The Martin Sexton/Ryan Montbleau show carried just as many proud and magical moments. I've been a long time fan of both Ryan and Martin. They're both some of the hardest working touring acts in the country right now. In general, they fly under a 'mainstream' radar but both have roots in the national touring scene and an ever-growing fanbase. Martin Sexton is a national treasure and is something to be seen live. He is a very talented singer and a solid, innovative guitar player. His musical pallette rests comfortably in the Americana vein and his lyrics evoke the great rock storytellers like Springsteen and Seger-you can tell this guy speaks from experience. Martin is just as comfortable playing with a band as he is crooning solo to a room of 1500 and it was fantastic to see a younger crowd there to sing and dance to his songs. Martin played a healthy mix of new and old. There was a lull or two with some of the mid-tempo love songs, but for the most part the night was full of dancing. When Martin went for the ballad, people were there all the way. There was another special thing about this show for me- Seeing Ryan open for, then back-up one of his self-professed heroes. I used to go to Ryan's North Shore shows back in college in the early 2000s when he was playing on his first record. You always had the feeling that Ryan was headed for bigger stages, and you always knew that there was a deep admiration for people like Martin. You got the feeling that the guy was realizing a dream being on that big stage, and it was cool to see the generations come together, master and student, to play beautiful music. Chances are a Martin Sexton show will be one of your top then, and one of his songs will be there for you when you need it. GO SEE MARTIN SEXTON PLAY!

It's been more than a decade since I've seen Martin Sexton live and I was very much looking forward to hearing his new music as well as re-living many of his classics. I was stunned to see that not even half the theatre had sold, because he sold out everywhere I went to see him back in the day. He usually puts on a pretty high energy show, but I'm afraid this Monday night concert almost put people to sleep. I was a little confused why he was doing this one man bit when he usually has a good back up band with him. I'm not even sure the Carolina Theatre was really the right venue for him, although it did remind me a little of the theatre I first saw him at in Boston. But nothing can change the fact that Martin's voice is still as strong and pure and amazing as ever! I got a few glimpses of the ol' Martin that really made me smile and for that, it was worth traveling to see him. I sure hope he made it home safely the next day because he really looked ready for some serious rest!

I love Martin's music, love everything he's about, but his show in Durham was pretty lethargic compared to what I expected. He could really use a drummer like he had on Live Wide Open to bring more energy to the show. I also think he was a little burned out after a long period on the road and ready to see his babies.

Had the best night with my Mother to see Martin Sexton perform live. We loved his bluesy rhythm. Through the evening, he took us through a journey of music and ended in a heartfelt acoustic performance of "Amazing Grace"... pretty sure everyone's eyes were wet after that. I would recommend anyone who loves a raw, rhythmic artist check him out!

Martin Sexton is one of those performers who sound better live in concert then their recordings. He has an amazing voice that spans several octaves and uses it effortlessly with such feeling. His guitar abilities are also exceptional. He sounds like he has a full band behind him while being solo. Martin has a warm, humble, humorous persona. He played for hours and thrives off the vibe of the crowd. I was so impressed that I immediately began to search for the next concert nearest to me. I highly recommend you see him!!

AS always, Martin was in the moment with his fans. His guitar strap broke at the beginning of the set, so he sat in a chair for many songs. Besides his heavenly voice which makes one feel connected to him from your core, his stories shine with humanity. Seeing Martin feels like visiting an old friend who you can always pick up with where you left off, doesn't judge you and make you feel like you are at home. He transmits joy from his heart through his voice and right into your body- the way church ought to! Seeing him in these intimate venue is such a treat. He played a bunch of new songs-can't wait to get the new album!

Saw Martin Sexton at the Bergen PAC last week. He has an incredible voice; his singing is great and his ability to do his own percussion back-up is unbelievable. My only complaints are that he didn't play as long as I'd expected and that the seats at Bergen PAC are worse than those in an airline's economy class!

Great night at a great venue, Bergen PAC in Engelwood, NJ. Great crowd, too. Martin is better than ever. Interviewed him years ago for a college paper, I wanna say 1996, then met my husband and he wooed me with a Martin CD. A few years later, saw him on a NYC music cruise. This show was, for me, his best yet. He is still raw and gnarly, but with the polish of a pro. Gosh darnit, Martin!!! Rocks so hard. I am still in awe of his range and th feast of soul he is.

To say that Martin is a great one man show sells the experience short. This man get s up there and plays guitar as good as anyone, no effects, and sings with a range that will blow your mind. He is a master story teller and song writer. His lyrics are rich with meaning and paint a picture in your mind. He gets the crowd to sing along as back up vocals and has a unique talent to make the night pass away in a flash, all by his lonesome. GO SEE THS GUY

We've seen Martin Sexton many times and this was one of his best shows ever. His voice and guitar playing were great as always, but the thing that made it a notch above was the energy level in the room. Both Martin and the audience interacted in a way that made the show super fun. It was also our first time at BergenPAC-it was very nice- comfortable seats, good view and excellent sound quality.

Though the venue was a bit uncomfortable, Martin Sexton put on a great show. He is so full of energy and such a positive role model. I highly recommend his next concert! Near the end of the show, a fan called out a song title while Sexton was in the middle of singing "America the Beautiful," and Sexton told him that this was an important song, and he needed to listen to it. It was wonderful how he didn't tell the guy off, but he made his point heard.

I have just recently discovered the wonderful works of Martin Sexton. What a voice and his ability with a quitar is special. Being a new listener I was hoping to hear his recorded stuff like it was laid down in his recordings, it seemed to be more party riff, bar music. The crowd was really into show. I'm a child of the sixty's and remeber Neil Young tell a crowd that I'm not a library as the audience shouted out requests, clearly sending the message that it was his show. Sexton is special but I can only imagin going out night after night trying to meet the crowds expectations while satisfing his desire to play what and how difficult. Sometimes it works and sometime it dosen't. Glory Bound is a great song, and I went to hear it. It seemed a bit road weary. If given the oppertunity to see him again local I would. That night my daughter and I had driven 3 hours to see Martin and I doubt that I work make that drive again for that show.

I've seen Martin years ago at the Music Hall in Portsmouth....being my first time seeing him I didnt know what to expect. When I left that night...I was hooked! The first thing I'll say is the man does not need a microphone...his voice is so powerful and moving that when he sings my soul moves....corny I know...but very accurate. So when I saw he was playing at the State Theater in Portland...I jumped on the chance to see him again and bring my husband this time! That night my husband was just as amazed as I was the first time I saw him. He kept saying "wow".....needless to say we had an incredible evening with each other as Martin's music brought us together. Thank you Martin! you are truly a talent that the world needs...God bless you and your family.

This was an amazing show, especially once we realized it was going to be an acoustic show! I know he is touring for his new EP, but there were a few songs we all wished he had played. He was 1st recommended to me by a guitarist friend, so I had an image in my head of burning solos and fancy chord changes. Then I picked up Live Wide Open and realized he was a virtuoso in a different way. Yes, his way of playing the bass line with his thumb, strumming chords with the rest of his fingers, alternating with just-the-right-lick solo lines was impressive, as was his ability to mimic drums by hitting the guitar body and vocalizing drum and cymbal sounds. He also had amazing vocal control, a beautiful falsetto and could belt out a trumpet line without a trumpet in sight. But his real areas of virtuosity? Taste and soul. He seems to have an unerring sense of the right note/sound/beat in just the right place. Yes, it's impressive to hear him combine all his "tricks" to create a kind of one man band, but if that was it, it might end up as just an impressive gimmick. Instead, it turns into a fascinating way to express a wide range of deep emotion. I had hoped he'd come with a drummer as he did on LWO, but as it turned out, playing solo just brought out all the subtleties to their best advantage. It was a wonderful show in a beautifully renovated theatre and it's hard to imagine a more satisfying night of art (maybe if the drinkers in back didn't yell, "Marty" at top volume during the quiet moments?).

I love this venue - smoky room with tables and chairs stretched out over a wooden dance floor, bar at the back and small stage up front. This was Marty alone with his guitar - always so fantastic and musically exciting. With his mastery of the fretboard and his voice, he carried the audience through many old favorites and some of the new from Sugarcoating. It was great to hear the new stuff without the whole band. After a long summer of touring Martin seemed to be saving his voice a bit, which gave him the opportunity to really whip it up on the guitar. Overall a sweet, intimate show giving the artist some time with his fans up close.

I've never been to Lancaster, PA let alone the Chameleon Club. Never heard of it until a few weeks ago when I learned that Marty was playing there. Recession lenient ticket price of $20.00 and less than an hour form my house convinced me to go with friends. Didn't know what to expect. A Tuesday night show was also a stretch for me being a father and growing older. Ughh; Wednesday morning! We got there early and found a place to have a pizza and beer. A couple minutes after arriving at the pizza joint Mr. and Mrs. Sexton along with their 'strollered' son walk up to the pizza place stunning me and 2 friends of mine. I noticed him first while my friends were skeptical of my poor vision. Ha! He couldn't have been more gracious. We did out usual 'nice to meet you', looking forward to your show, etc. when a friend of mine tells Marty he's going to the Dave Matthews show tonight and saying that must be a huge opportunity for you and Marty responds humbly "it's a huge opportunity for anyone". We chatted, ate, and then went to the show. Ryan Montebleau opened. All I can say is Wow, wow, wow! Sorry to say I really knew very little about him. Not anymore! He and the band were a tight, rockin', inspired sound. Honed musicians. The Cajun, thumping, Blues, Rock & Roll mix was incredible! The 8 of us that went to the show were stunned by the talent! It was the second to last night Marty would play with them as his back up band. I think they wanted to go out on a high note. Marty on the other hand built on the awe built by Ryan and his band. I didn't think Marty could have topped the mountain Ryan climbed prior his performance. I was wrong and quite a bit so! The range of voice and outright jamming was incredible. We were fortunate in that the Chameleon Club only held about 850 people according to a bouncer. I guess since it was a Tuesday no more than 200 people showed! Very intimate! Marty mixed in some Beatles and Led Zeppelin and small homage to the Grateful Dead! He weaved the melodies of his former heroes in to several songs and shock and awed the crowd. We were floored as he performed so effortlessly. Our group leaning against the stage less than 4 feet from the talented musicians. In all they played for 3 hours. It will be a show I won't soon ever forget! I wished he played the last Four tunes on his set list though attached below. I guess it got late for him too! Thank you to Ryan, Marty and the 8 wonderful people that shared the evening.

My wife is a fan, and I have become one too. Being a bit of a metalhead, I often don't go for anything tinged with folk or country elements. But Martin Sexton makes me rethink things. He melds so many styles seamlessly, that the music always remains interesting. And the guy just has a nice positive vibe, on top of being able to do just about anything he wants with his voice. He's the Mike Patton of folk-rock-jazz-country-pop !!

Went to see Martin Sexton with my daughter. An absolutely perfect evening. Martin sang all our favorites and the accompanying artists were a perfect compliment to his performance. I loved every minute of it. He is truly an amazing song writer, vocalist and a beautiful soul.

Show in a woodstock was brilliant. Had a bunch of friend there who had never really heard him. They were all instant fans. And the Brothers McCann from Boston were completely awesome too!

What a great night - felt like we were in his living room it felt personal. Martin Sexton has one of the broadest vocal ranges I've heard. What a talent.

I absolutely loved this show. Martin Sexton is a live show master and I wish I could quit my job and follow him around on tour all summer.

The show was excellent. The opening act was good, particularly the vocal harmonies. Of course, the real reason people came to this show was for Martin Sexton. His blend of music and powerful vocals (and yodels, lets be honest) resonate long after you've left the building. He was fantastic.

All his shows are fabulous but this one was even better than prior shows. I didn't think he could get better but there he goes - exceeding all expectations again. As usual, MArtin Sexton solo on the stage filled the room as though there were four people up there. He plays all the old favorites but also some great tunes off his newest album. The Brother's Mccann came out and sang (3 part harmonies) for several songs and it was amazing. They backed up and filled in the music without overpowering or drowning out Martin Sexton. Martin Sexton's albums are good but can't compare with his live performances. Everyone should see him at least once and this is the tour to see.

Martin Sexton is one of those artist that few know about ( compared to the main line pop scene ) but probably has more talent that most of them put together. As a songwriter, his lyric are both beautiful and witty at the same time, with a melody to match. As a live performer, there is little doubt that this is what he was put here on earth to do. For two hours he leads you on a musical journey that will leave you in awe, wondering how one person and a guitar can do so much. His draws you into his world and performs it seams, just for you. From the first note, you start to smile and that continues even on your way out of the venue. If you haven't seen Martin Sexton live, then you have missed a special artistic performance without equal.

This was my second time seeing Martin Sexton! He is still as good as 10 years ago, maybe better!! His voice is such an amAzing instrument like nothing I've ever heard before! He plays the guitar so effortlessly and rocked for the whole hour and a half. The venue was good but just needs a little cleaning. It smelled. Other than that it was a great experience!

I've seen Martin Sexton perform many times in the last decade and I always look forward to his concerts as I did this one; thank all of you who spent the entire concert talking, instead of listening, for making this the worst concert I've attended. I'm disappointed with the venue and will travel elsewhere next time to enjoy Martin Sexton's talent.

This was my first Martin Sexton concert and I didnt leave disappointed. From the moment he walked on stage Martin was engaging and it became clear to me that his beginnings were as a street performer. He wasnt just singing- he was performing. I knew it would be fun to see how he made all of the instrument sounds that he does. Very entertaining concert. Played all of my favorites- took requests- did some new tunes and an encore. I will track him down the next time he's in town.

What a performer. Second time we've seen him solo at this club. He rocked it. Finished his tour with power, energy, and a voice from heaven. But Water Street's sound sucked hard. Rock band next door drowned out the artists' voices between songs (Sexton's and the excellent opening act), and big loud overhead fans caused a terrible buzz or hum. Plus, standing for three hours for us old farts is not what we seek in the music-club experience. Back to Martin: he deserves to be much bigger than he is.

We were Martin Sexton fans to begin with but seeing him live made us even bigger fans. He is very talented and because it was a small venue we were able to be up close and see and hear how many different things he can do musically. He deserved a bigger crowd so hopefully he is through the area next time we can all get out and support him more. Very worth it!!

I ve always wanted to see martin and when I finally did I couldn t of asked for a better place to see him, there was probably a total of 30 people there and if anyone wanted to hear a particular song all they had to do was yell it out and he kindly would say ok and away he went. Amazing, amazing!

The tickets were purchased by my 22 year old son for our family for Christmas. He had seen Martin before and wanted us to have the opportunity to enjoy his music. We went as a family and had a great evening! Martin's soulful artistry is second to none. We go to a lot of concerts and this one will moved right to the top of my favorite list. If you enjoy true talent you will enjoy Martin Sexton.

Martin Sexton appeared at the newly renovated State Theater on Friday night to a somewhat subdued but enthusiastic crowd on Friday night. The opening act, Portland's own Jason Spooner Trio, had to fight the bar noise, but were very solid and appreciated. It kind of made it feel like a really huge nightclub. They're a band to watch. When Mr Sexton came on, he established the tone right from the start, using his powerful vocal cords to own the crowd. He's a natural performer whose energy, passion and precision draw the crowd into a two-way conversation with the artist. His rhythmic interludes were really fun and cheaper than hiring a drummer. The audience was obviously made up of a lot of his fans, so the singalongs were nice, but, again, somewhat subdued. All in all, except for the ever present noise from the bar, even during some of the quiet moments, it was an evening well spent. He's a true singer's singer with an amazing vocal palette to work with.

A simple but powerful human package--a man who discovered his God-given gifts and developed them to the fullest. He is truly one of a kind, in his own league. It seemed as if his guitar and his body were one. Music is at his core, and he channels it through his voice and his guitar in a way that leaves you wanting more.
