Evita

TIM RICE and ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER's Tony Award®-winning musical returns at last!Eva Perón used her beauty and charisma to rise meteorically from the slums of Argentina to the presidential mansion as First Lady. Adored by her people as a champion for the poor, she became one of the most powerful women in the world — while her greed, outsized ambition and fragile health made her one of the most tragic. EVITA tells Eva's passionate and unforgettable true story, and features some of theater's most beautiful songs, including "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" and "High Flying, Adored."  Don't miss the stunning new production of EVITA, directed by MICHAEL GRANDAGE and choreographed by ROB ASHFORD, that Channel 4 New York calls “THE HOTTEST TICKET IN TOWN!”www.

We enjoyed the music and the performance of "Che". We were disappointed that we did not have the opportunity to hear the main "Eva", as the understudy performed at the performance we attended.

This performance held very true to the original 1979 stage version as evident in the cast portrayals and staging. I would recommend seeing this production at Casa Manana because of its smaller size and intimacy to the Fort Worth community.

Everything about this show was amazing, From the first note to the last. Lauren Kennedy truly captured the role of Eva Peron, She looked, and sounded amazing I really cannot say enough great things about her. Seeing Kevin Grey was in action up close was unreal! His Che was unforgettable. All of the vocals and choreography were tight, and brilliant! I'm seeing it for a second time tomorrow night. I cannot wait!

I only bought these tickets because my wife wanted to go.... so with that said I wasn't expecting much (although I do enjoy theater). I was immediately drawn in and stuck the whole time. I loved it and every performer was amazing. I really only see 2 downsides: First, the venue. It certainly isn't bad but it was a bit too intimate for this type of performance. The voices were overpowering and things that were meant to be small or background really stood out too much. Also, the musicians were a but overpowering as well, but with the proximity it really wasn't their fault. Second: The price. This was my first time to buy tickets for a performance here and unfortunately it will be my last. For the same money, I can see touring shows at DSM with great seats. I would love to see every performance at Casa, but for the price I can do other things.

This was the worst show ever. I have seen more than 100 Broadway shows and this was by far the least enjoyable. If ever there was a reason for a refund this show is it. The best I can say is it would have to get better because it can't get worse.

It was a captivating show from the beginning with a great cast. I found it a little difficult to keep a few of the characters straight from scene to scene. Also a brief synopsis of what the entire production was about would have been nice to included in the playbill.

Sorry to say but I think the Evita understudy was weak. The play was only run 10-12 times and the lead performer for Evita needed to sub out ????? It's not like the show is running for months and months. I thought the sound was good but the clarity of the words being sung was very poor. The set and lighting was excellent.

With understudies taking on the lead roles of Ava and Che, the performers weren't as strong as anticipated. However, they were Broadway quality. The sets, staging, choreography, and costumes made it the spectacle this rock opera should be. The inclusion of "You Must Love Me," written for the movie adaptation fit in seamlessly.

I have seen Evita so many times, I`ve lost count. This particular production was just so-so for me unfortunately. The previous production had awesome choreography, this choreography seemed lazy to me. Previously, the choreography even helped with the story, example: Che getting beat up by soldiers when disputing Peron, they didn`t even have that in this production. They removed some parts completely also, guess I just can`t handle the changes. I also felt that, although the singer portraying Evita was good, I think the role was just a bit too much for her. She fell behind the beat of the music several times. Her voice sounded nice don`t get me wrong just, sounded winded and behind the beat. Peron & Che were very good! Just wish the choreography would have been better,it was really lacking.

The character Evita was played by a lady that was NOT a lead singer by any means. She could not be understood. I do not think the Sat. matinee should offer less quality performers just because it is an afternoon event. My husband and I were disappointed and had traveled 180 miles for this play.

I saw Evita in London in 1981 with Elaine Paige and David Essex...now THAT was a show. It made such an impact on me that I wanted this show to be the first one that I took my 9 y.o. daughter to. What a disappointment. The actress playing Evita in this version was so bland -- she had no stage presence whatsoever. She seemed to rush through all her numbers, as if she was fearful that everyone would figure out that she really doesn't have the chops to carry off the character of Eva Peron. The actor portraying the Che character was much better. For me, he stood out because his voice was beautiful -- crystal clear with fantastic enunciation. There were a couple of standout scenes, and the music was as beautiful as ever, but for the most part, I was not impressed with this version of Evita. (A couple of side comments : it is so irritating that Majestic Theater allows people to come into the show so late, especially since so many people are discourteous in that way. Also, WHY OH WHY does Majestic Theater sell loud, crinkly packets of cookies and candy at their concession stand? If they feel they really must appease the morons that need to eat that junk at a Broadway-type show, then PLEASE forbid people from bringing it back into the theater!)

Evita is a classic! A musical with dance, humor, song and energy! The performance in San Antonio was great but not memorable. The role of Evita requires a very strong voice. The performer in San Antonio was talented but did not have the voice you would expect. At times it was more like screaming than singing. I applaud her for her efforts but she did not quite hit the mark. All in all it was a fun experience! Cannot get the music out of my head!!

After having seen Evita in London and LA, I looked so forward to reviving the memory of one of my all time theater faves. The SD production was good...not great. Josh Young was a strong Che, Christopher Johnstone was spot on as Magaldi, Sean McLauglin's Peron was good, but Carolina Bowman couldn't muster up the power of Evita. And why oh why did the director insist that she sing continuously while dancing all over the floor? Impossible. She wasn't meant to be an athlete. One scene was too obviously lacking...the exciting choreography of the soldier's march to "Peron's Latest Flame" (I believe that was the song). Too bad. All in all, it was an acceptable performance. Could have used some help with acoustics. And, thankfully, at least Che possessed the power that is "Evita".

Before I watched this musical, I knew nothing about who Evita was or why she was important. So I watched the 1996 movie musical starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas to get a feel for the musical first before going to see the show. Evita tells the life story of the woman who would become Eva Peron, one of the most famous political figures in Argentina's history. The costumes and the sets were amazingly detailed and the singing was very loud and expressive. The actors were very intense in everything that they said, sung, or danced in, which really showcased their talents and passion for their craft. The voice that amazed me the most was that of Che's, I don't know how the actor can sing multiple shows a day like that and not loose or damage his voice. This is a rock opera musical, so most of the songs have a rock element to them. Personally I enjoyed the sounds and music of Argentina better than the rock elements but I understand why that choice was made. Overall, while Evita wasn't bad, it wasn't my favorite musical that I've seen either. If you like learning about history, or watching revolutions and uprisings, rock style music, or want to see something different than your standard musical, then check out Evita and ask her what's new.

This Evita lacked some of the pizazz of the original productions that came to LA in the late 70s and early 80s. Obviously cut backs on cast size, costuming, and orchestra, but also they cut out a very fun choreographed section on "Peron's Latest Flame". Now the cast just stands and sings to the audience during the tune. Anyway this cast is just excellent. Evita is wonderful and gets down the feisty and power hungry Evita spot on. The true gem is Ginsberg as Che. I've seen Evita about 15 times since it first came to LA and he's one of the two best Che's ever. Marvelously powerful voice and perfect inflections on his sarcasm, cynicism, irony, and disgust with what his character witnesses. Just a great voice, hitting every note from soft and quiet to loud and desperate. You'll love this cast. Saw this in Thousand Oaks, CA last weekend.

This was a poor production. The lead, Desi Oakley, did not have the range to sing the role of Eva and the pacing of the entire production was so slow as to lull one to sleep. The over all cast was made so small that crowd scenes (On The Balcony of the Casa Rosada for instance) were more like a very small family get together and totally unbelievable. I've seen 7 other productions of Evita so I do know a good performance of it. The direction had singers punching a single word here of there to convey "emotion", leaving the audience to wonder why that one word was shouted so loud when compared to the rest of the song. In spite of this, I did admire the new sets. Still somewhat minimal, they added a little more color to the set versus the old production. I also truly admired Josh Young as Che - he gave a great performance. In short, save your money for another road show. This one is only half ready to be seen.

Would love to see it again if it were in the budget. Too bad the theater was only half full. People really missed out, but it is a busy time of year. One thing that did irritate me that has nothing to do with the performance was after I bought my tickets I was sent an email that tickets were now 25% off. Having just bought 5 full price tickets I would rather have not known this information.

This is a case where the supporting cast definitely out shined the leads. The actress in the role of Eva Peron simply did not have the range for the role. She obviously could not hit the low notes that are so necessary to this score. Che was fine. Just lacking in emotional content. His singing was perfect. The chorus was impeccable. Song, dance, and acting stellar. And the production is quite well conceived and executed, other than the opening scene which was confusing. Its supposed to be a movie theatre and the film interrupted for the announcement of the death of Eva Peron. The way it was presented was confusing. The venue is wonderful. The Civic Center in Des Moines is a most pleasant place for theatre.

This was the third time I've seen Evita. I've seen the touring production at Shea's several years ago and also the movie. This production seemed to lack energy. The best actor in my opinion, was Che. The actress who played Eva Peron didn't have a strong enough voice for some of the songs she had to sing and at times, it sounded like she was screaming. Some of the ensembles movement on the stage appeared amateurish, I've seen high school productions do better. The diction on the part of the cast was very good, so it made the dialogue completely understandable and the story line easy to follow.

My husband & I were very disappointed in the event. The music was so loud that the singers had to "yell" over the music to try & make themselves heard which then made it hard to understand the songs. Even the few spoken lines were drowned out by the music. At one point we almost walked out in the first half of the program. Sorry we chose to attend this event.

The Dallas production of "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" lacked sparkle maybe because of the poor sound system, the weak female lead, and Che who had no enthusiasm and delivery. Some of the productions numbers were colorful, but after the first dance routine, the rest were with the same movements ; only the costumes changed. Many of Evita's songs were overpowered by the orchestra. At times, it seemed as if Evita was screaming not singing. I did like the sets, but the lighting was not effective as many times the stage was so dark that it was hard to follow the action. When I left the theater, I was not crying for Argentina, I was weeping over the high price of the admission for such a lack luster performance of a wonderful play.

To us it was a modernized version of this fabulous play. A smaller cast, and the tango dancing was not up to standard. It was strange....sort of everyone doing the same steps. Tango steps are at the discretion of the male dancer. I thought the girl who played Evita was wrong. Too tall, and her voice given to screeching at times. All male leads were very good. We've seen Evita many times. This production was entertaining, but disappointing to me. However, I would recommend it to anyone who has not seen other productions of Evita This because the music is so fabulous. Still left the theatre humming the songs!

Truly an average production of what can and should be a truly engaging work. I was particularly turned off when the show ended and Eva broke character to pass the hat for AIDs.

I love this show and have seen it several times in NYC and also other cities. This performance was one of the poorest I've witnessed. The Fair Park Music Hall is a wonderful venue but something was terribly flat with this show.

We saw a Saturday matinee. The part of Che was amazing and effortless--one of the best male singers I have heard in awhile. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for the female singer who played Evita that day (was she the understudy??)-- Her part was NOT done effortlessly, and she sounded either sharp or flat on too many notes--like the part was beyond her abilities. This was the first time I have felt that about a production at Fair Park/Dallas Summer Musicals.

Seeing Evita on stage after waiting so many years, was exactly as grand as I had expected it to be. The music, the costumes, the staging......it was all perfect.

the performances were great; the music was louder than the singing so we had a hard time understanding the performers, especially the chorus. luckily, we knew the storyline and had seen the musical before so we knew what was going on. if we hadn't, we would have been lost since we could not understand a word the chorus and some performers were singing since the music drowned them out. more testing needs to be done before performances to ascertain the level the music should be at to accompany the performers. the people sitting next to us left during intermission. a dissapointment for the price we paid.

The venue is semi-formal, but does not engage the audience in the show. The show itself was a beautiful rendition of a classic operetta.

My husband & I saw "Evita" on Broadway 33 years ago. The Broadway Theatre production was entirerly emersed in Peron's time period. The paintings on the wall, the balconies & people dressed in black. The play itself was an amazing flashback starting with a death announcement in a movie theatre that brought Argentina into instant mourning for First Lady, Eva Duarte de Peron. Dallas's "Evita" started with actual news reel footage of the memorable sad event. Che brought the outpouring of emotions into perspective. Eva came out from the stage audience to take place in her story, as she did on Broadway. Our concerned was casting & the use of an Anglicanized Spanish. It would have been nice to get the Argentinian look & Spanish Language to sound more authentic. Che was wonderful. His voice became stronger as the play progressed. Evita needed to give her all, but seemed to slow down, at times sounded more tired too soon leading up to the conclusion . Overall, "Evita" is worth experiencing. The entertainment - Dallas version - is delightful. You'll be singing all the way home. Nice job Dallas!

I have seen the musical production of Evita three times and of course the movie starring Madonna. I would argue that this version tops them all. The singing, dancing, acting, sets, costumes, etc. were superb! Inside Music Hall at Fair Park is also a classy setting to see a show.

"Evita" was a wonderful experience. I realized that the production was going to be unique when it began with the use of actual photos from Evita's funeral. The actors' voices were impressive, and their energy was amazing. I was not expecting such an interesting and energetic production. I would love to see it again.
