Aimee Mann put on a fantastic show at the Wilbur. The set list was loaded with tracks off her new album and peppered with some of her older solo material as well (no Til' Tuesday). The acoustics of the venue played very well with music creating a warm and inviting sound. The addition of the 4 string instruments really added depth and a sound to the music that really enriched the experience. It was one of the first shows on the tour so there were a few candid moments that really made it even more entertaining.

As a huge fan of Aimee Mann's music I was excited to see her Christmas show for the second year in a row. While there were some amazing moments (Liz Phair performing "Why Can't I Wreath", the restored lyrics to "Voices Carry" ("This is Gary"), and Aimee and Ted's new song "You're a Gift") I was mildly disappointed at the repetition from last year. Jonathan Coulton's material was song-for-song the same as last year (Christmas is Interesting, Eat Your Brains), but the other guests, Liz Phair and John Roderick, were genuinely fantastic. I enjoyed the banter between songs, myself, but I can understand other reviewers who would have preferred more music rather than jokes. Aimee and Ted's dry senses of humor might not be for everyone, but their music and the special guests were well worth the ticket price, and the $50 poster designed by Gary Taxali and signed by Aimee and Ted will look great on my wall.

Nick Lowe was amazing, even with an admitted head cold...as an opener his set was too short, but a true professional in every way....the true king of pop is still alive! I've seen Aimee Mann many, many times....this tour format is definitely the best ever...great voice, great songs (spanning her entire professional career)...and musicians and audience all having great fun!!

After a dark and haunting beginning, covering some of her best and most sensitive material, an audience moment (joyful shreiking at the start of the somber "save me" that gave Aimee the giggles) interrupted the mood and momentum was lost. Aimee and crew decided to change course to take requests, a chaotic process that resulted in poorly coordinated and disconnected songs. Despite an enthusiastic and supportive audience, the concert never again reached musical heights or depths. Having seen and loved other Aimee Mann shows, this one seemed poorly planned and without passion, except for the first third of the concert. Opener Nick Lowe, performing only with a guitar, was charming and his voice was delightful and in control, as he cruised through a series short songs.

GREAT concert - been to many, but the very best was in Boston - although this was a really close second. She played forever and it was really casual and perfect venue - love Aimeee. Love the way she asks for requests - only wish I actually new the names of her songs - I have loved her for years - literally years since Til Tuesday - but I just listen to all the cds and never pay attention to the titles! Her music, singing and lyrics are amazing - thought provoking, touching, and full of feeling - hope she releases her B sides and those that were cut from Magnolia that she played . . . hint hint - also some new songs? Nightmare Girl - was great, as well as ALL songs!

First time seeing Aimee LIVE - so I was thrilled and could NOT be disappointed - except that the Melody Tent management imposed a curfew - - she would have played on, had she been able. Aimee is an incredibly talented artist and gifted performer. It was a really, really great show, she was awesome, her ensemble was terrific and I had a fantastic time.

The venue was nice because it was a very intimate setting. Aimee Mann was excellent but only played for an hour and 10 minutes. It would have been better if they started the show earlier. The melody tent has a 10:30 curfew.

This performance was so enjoyable. Aimee was personable had a warm presence on stage. This was my first time seeing her live, and her voice is even more haunting and beautiful than on CD. The only downside was the curfew, which cut the concert short.

Aimee Manns performance at the cape cod melody tent was the best I've ever seen. I've seen her at places from the old channel in Boston to Symphony Hall and this was by far the best. I felt like she was playing in my living room for me and a bunch of friends. Shes expanded the bit where she take requests a little more than the last tour and her repore with the audience was amazing. This is a women whos definitely come into her own and its great to see her looking so comfortable in her own skin.

2nd time we have seen her, this was a 3 piece band stripped down, she was awesome, very funny and sounded great. The venue at the melody tent has great seats but the 10:30 pm curfew sucks, just as the artist is getting into it they have to shut them down.

First the bad; The theater was hot. They need to fix their air conditioning before summer. The other issue was the bass was way too loud at least up in the balcony. It certainly drowned out the strings and really over powered the rest of the sound too. I sometimes feel like if I yelled down to turn down the bass, Aimee would have fixed it, but I do not want to be a heckler. The good: The songs she played was a great selection. There are songs I wished she played, but I can't really think of what she should have taken out.

...another fulfilling evening with Aimee Mann, one of the most underrated singer/songwriters in today's music scene. (Although I think she likes it that way.) She played songs from the new album as well as the classics. She's funny, she interacts with the audience and she always puts on a great show. My wife said to me just halfway into the show "I'd love to just hang out with her at a barbeque or something" "She's so funny & cool"

I have been a fan of Aimee's for many years, even back to her Til Tuesday days. This was my first time seeing her live. Her voice sounded great and the Town Hall is a nice intimate place to see a show. The only two negative's I have would be that the bass guitar was too loud. It at times over took the other instruments and sometimes her voice. The other thing is that she dropped a number of "f-bombs" while talking to the audience. There were a number of kids at the show. Overall though a good performance

I have loved Aimee Mann since she was in 'Til Tuesday which was in the 80s, I think. She has an incredible voice and is a very talented songwriter. Her opening act was very enjoyable and their collaboration on a few songs was a real treat. I have not been able to get her songs out of my head since the concert. The music is infectious. I'm thinking of going to see her again later in the summer. She's that good.

As someone who has seen each and every Aimee Mann Boston Christmas Concert we were all disappointed as the show has gotten progressively worse each year and I will hesitate to see it again even though it has become our annual family tradition - Ted Leo needs to play and cut down on the banter - This is a far cry from the first several shows she did - ugh!

Very clever, funny show with tender moments. Highlights: Aimee's Christmas version of Voices Carry, Ted Leo's rendition of Ballad of the Christmas Donkey Finale featuring Jesus Klaus There were some non-holiday music moments too that were wonderful. Guests Liz Phair, Jonathan Coultan & John Roderick were great and introduced me to new music to check out.

Do not miss this show if you get the opportunity to see it. The music is a great mix of traditional holiday songs, hits made popular by the artists (who are great, even if you aren't familiar with them) and even some hysterical song parodies. The on-stage banter and skits are also very, very funny. You're guaranteed to leave in a great mood.

First, I am a big fan of Aimee Mann, I think she is one of the most creative artists today. Together with Ted Leo they gave a fantastic show. Honestly, I didn't need the subterfuge of a murder mystery and do wish they performed more original works but I did like their take on Christmas themed music. The guests, Jonathan Coulton, Susanna Hoffs, and Fred Armisen added to the show. Susanna stole the show, with Walk Like an Egyptian remake and fondling Ted Leo guitar at the end (you had to be there).

The show was funny and entertaining. I expected a little bit more music and less talking, as it was a concert and not a play or musical. As an Aimee Mann-Fan I also expected a little bit more of her own songs and less tradtional Christmas Songs. I am sure they would have perfectly fitted into the whole "Christmas-thing".

The usual dry humor and hard rock and roll we've come to expect from Aimee's Christmas shows. John Hodgman's Ayn Rand channeling was a hoot but not up to the level of outrageous humor projected by the raucous antics of the Hanukkah Fairy that was a hallmark of the show before the hiatus. Susanna Hoffs' performance was all I love about the Bangles. I hope when I am 55, I'm as well preserved (on a masculine basis) as she is...wait...that moment passed me by a dozen years ago...never mind.

The Aimee Mann Christmas show was awesome. So fun and funny and smart and Christmasy. It had crime, donkeys, diapers, men in dresses, some Hebrew and lots of talk about blood. :) Susanna Hoffs and Jon Hodgeman were fantastic (my husband had wondered if it would be the REAL J. Hodgman). Way to go Aimee and Ted Leo. We will go back next year. Only complaint: does the Birchmere really not have a large screen that can be raised and lowered and seen by all??!!

...the skits, the "detective" theme, and especially the "comedians" were very weak and flat. Aimee, Ted, Susanna, and the band are top notch performers. Aimee and Ted's voices are so amazing. Susanna is a natural, cute too! The problem with the show is that it is disjointed, the scripted banter between songs is not only not funny it is too long. Precious time wasted on what could have been spent playing songs. The dialouge is not witty or upbeat. The theme about who killed Santa Clause backstage was underdeveloped at best. Worst of all though were the two comedians...ouch. One guy was dressed up as Hitler in a dress, speaking in a Russian/foreign language, basically ranting but definitely not funny. The audience was noted to laugh at times mostly out of nervous energy. All that aside Aimee and Ted have charisma and some charm was noted at times. Also the band's talent when playing songs shone through. "Volunteers of America" was amazing. Susanna brought the house down with her Bangles tunes. Good stuff. The band should drop the comedians and lame script and just come out and do a rock show with Christmas songs thrown in - it would have been much better. :)

We are against conspicuous consumerism as much as the next good progressive... but, the rants on Ayn Rand were just too tedious. Cut half the (attempt at) comedy and double the duets!

This show was disappointing. I found the theme and banter to be overly staged and stiff, and its content seemed inappropriate for the social and political climate of the city (Aimee Mann and Ted Leo avoid and then reluctantly decide to investigate the murder of an unnamed person back stage...not very funny considering the recent decision by a Grand Jury in Staten Island not to indict the officer responsible for Eric Garner's death...and the fact that huge protests had been taking place throughout the city all day). Fred Armisen was great and so was Jonathan Coulton...but the rest of the show was a real bummer. Also, weren't there supposed to be other special guests besides the ones listed? We kept waiting for a special appearance that never came. This was the worst $100 I've ever spent.

Misadvertised as a Christmas concert. There were only a few Christmas songs. Most of the "concert consisted of silly banter between Aimee and Ted. There were also a couple of comics and I use the term "comics" very generously. There was only 1 comic routine that was remotely funny. Do NOT waste your money on this if you are looking for a Christmas theme.

I am a fan of Aimee Mann, since her days in the Young Snakes, in Boston, early 1980's, so I was very much looking forward to this event, and seeing her / hearing her music once again (and with a Christmas twist) Problem was, this was really a rather loose, and "amatuerish" attempt at a good idea - a sort of "variety show" of Christmas songs, and guest appearances, and some "comedy". The idea was very good - buut the "execution" was really quite awful. The "solving a murder" theme was painful to watch / sit through, and the banter between Aimee and Ted Leo should have been much, much better -instead it felt dull and "wooden", un-rehearsed and not very funny or charming.... "Guests" Jonathan Coulton and Susanna Hoffs were good, but kept running on and off stage, with no apparent logic to their appearances. LOVE Aimee, her songs (much more please!) and was hoping for much more...... but, Merry Christmas!

We didn't know what to expect other than a quirky Aimee Mann perspective on Christmas. The underlying "TV cop show" premise wore a bit thin at times, but the songs and guest artists more than made up for it. Aimee and Ted Leo are an excellent creative and performing team, and if this show comes to NYC next year we'll definitely go.

Aimee Mann was excellent! Unfortunately, the audience was not. There were many jerks in the audience who kept yelling things out to her. She had a good sense of humor about it and it did not affect her performance. The guitar that needed constant re-tuning slowed the pace of the show a bit, but overall a quite enjoyable show. I would go see her tomorrow if it were possible.

I had not seen Aimee Mann perform in a number of years, so I was very excited to finally see her perform after all of this time. She was amazing!! No question ~ She is simply one of the best singer/songwriters on the planet. Her band was fantastic and very, very solid. She performed many of my favorites as well as my soon to be favorites off the new album. I was only bummed she didnt have more merchandise (cd's only) as I would have loved to buy a t-shirt or hoodie. And although I looked at the Wilshire Ebell website in advance, I didn't see any notification that alcohol is not served there. Great Show. If you love Aimee Mann you would have loved seeing this. It was casual, intimate, and gave a great look into this amazing song-writer. The venue was a little odd and it took the sound engineers a little while to dial things in, but they kept refining it as the evening went on - ultimately getting to a pretty decent place. Aimee herself was her charming self, full of stories and background about each song. She played lots of stuff from her new album Mental Illness, but played lots of old favorites and closed the show with Voices Carry. Her band was also great. If I had one complaint it would be the sound- tough venue to get it all dialed in

Great show, had never seen her before but love her songs and her voice. Opening act (sorry, can't think of his name) was really good, his songs reminded me of Loudon Wainwright. I guess the only thing I wish is that Aimee had more interaction with the audience. After almost every song, she said, "Thank you SO much." It almost sounded sarcastic after a while. But I guess she's not about the stage patter. I liked hearing the new songs - "Goose Snow Cone" has been in my head ever since the show. And I love that she opened with one of my favorite songs, "Fourth of July." What an incredible songwriting talent. In a perfect world, she would have had 10 Top 10 hits so far.

Aimee Mann seems to have achieved performance perfection. To be sure, I love the older music as no one else, but last Thursday, the performance was so powerful in its seeming simplicity that my wife and I departed the venue nodding in agreement that what we just saw was a great concert. Ms. Mann's voice just seems to get better and better. Don't get me wrong, but the whole band, especially Ms. Mann, seemed to perform effortlessly--not that they were nonchalant or tired, but it was as if their voices and musicianship were a well-oiled performance engine. We love the performer Ms. Mann for her persona, her voice, her music and lyrics. The current performance-style and the group of musicians all support rather than distract from Ms. Mann's intentions for her songs. Current musicians played old favorites without missing familiar riffs, as if those riffs were part of enshrined compositions, and this time without individual heroics. (There is no doubt that the musicians can be virtuosos if called upon.) Such supportive performance-style clears the way for her lyrics to get through to the audience just what she wants.

Her voice is superb, and her band is tight and polished. Her latest album is a low key acoustic set of interesting songs, including a few hits like Patient Zero. She was great, just as she always is. Her personality, interacting with the crowd, her band, and her amazing songwriting have kept me seeing her every time she goes on tour.

Nice setlist, mix of old and new. Good sound. I missed hearing the fantastic playing of local drummer John Sands. He's the perfect match for Aimee. New drummer's decent but he's no Sands. Hope they play together again one day.

<3'd this show. My only take back is I wish that she didn't finish the evening's show w/ two cover songs... :-/ Her talent shoulda been enough... <3 <3 <3

The show was incredible fun, holiday oriented, but light, funny. Ted Leo is a great foil, terrific singer/guitarist in his own right. The guests were also great, Susanna Hoffs (Bangles) was cute and rock n roll simultaneously, and the other guest, Jonathan Coulton, is a long time favorite, and lived up to expectations. Took my wife and 16 year old daughter. I am an old Aimee Mann fan, but neither of them is, but they both had a great time as well. (if I have to nit pick, my only complaint was Aimee didn't do enough of her own, non holiday material, but that is probably the same reason you could enjoy the show without being a long time fan). The songs she did do with Ted Leo were great, and I think even folks who didn't know them could enjoy them. The whole presentation was silly, which works for me. I'd go again next year if the show returns.

Been to a few of these shows. they are pretty loose, fun shows. This time around Ted Leo was on board and he, along with Susanna Hoffs, really lifted the show up. Both had great energy and were fun. The slow holiday songs were a little dull, but i think most of the crowd enjoyed them.

I love her but she needs to mix up her set list, she was doing the same show in LA seven months ago.

I saw the Aimee Mann Christmas Show in 2010 and it was wonderful. Compared to that, this was very disappointing. The comedians were awful and the whole gag about solving murders just never worked. It wasn't funny from the first moment and they just beat it to death. Musically, I went to see Aimee Mann, not Ted Leo. His music was loud and abrasive and there was simply too much of him in the show. Aimee only played one "Aimee Mann" song in the entire show. Susannah Hoffs was great and some of the Christmas songs were nicely done, but the warm spirit of the show I saw four years ago was gone. This was an unfunny, overly loud mess.

The first time I saw Aimee Mann was great. I really enjoyed her music and was excited when she released Lost In Space. I have not paid too much attention to her new album. Some of the songs are catchy, but she seems overrated. Some of the performances were so maudlin that I wanted to run out of there before I got too depressed. I'm glad she swallowed her pride and played Voices Carry. Now if she would just play Afternoon Delight.

Fantastic. Aimee Mann, Ted Leo, Fred Armisen, Susanna Hoffs, Jonathan Coulton bring you Christmas merriment. Goofy fun and great songs fashioned after a retro variety hour.

I was surprised that this show was so awkward and offensive. Even Aimee Mann couldn't get away with it. Who ever thought combining a murder with Christmas to be funny?

To be honest, I wasn't sure how I felt about the 2 very different energies playing together, but now that I've seen them perform I am confident that this really is a power duo. In love with them "both"!

Aimee displayed her usual charm in her rapport with the audience, and her voice was excellent. Her solo performances of Save Me and Wise Up were memorable. I knew that many beautiful songs on her earlier CDs would not be played-Invisible Ink for example. The tour was designed to support the Charmer release, and this material was performed very professionally by AM and a three man band. Although I have listened to the Forgotten Arm CD in the past, it was never my favorite. AM has apparently decided that Goodbye Caroline would be the best representation from that CD, and I truly enjoyed the live version of that song. Her voice seems to meld very well with Ted Leo's, and the duets they performed were all remarkable.

Aimee Mann in Huntington, Long Island- as always, she put on a great show. The Paramount is a terrific venue - I was a little disappointed with the crowd and overall attendance. Also, the chairs were a little tight and uncomfortable. The music was great - she did old and new.

All of the performers were technically great. But the crowd was sedate and the venue invested no life into the show.

Aimee's sense of humor is very witty and comes through quite well. The music was wonderful. Did not know some of the material, but was not disappointed in the least. Aimee and her band were very tight.

Had an absolute blast at the 2014 Aimee Mann Christmas Show! Aimee and Ted Leo were fantastic, and I was surprised to see special guests Jonathan Coulton and Susanna Hoffs. All of them are performers at their peak of their skills. Great voices that blended well. More of a show than a concert, with a psudo- plot regarding Amy and Ted as Columbo era consulting detectives solving the murder of the back stage santa, allegedly killed shortly after the show started. They were funny and interactive with the audience. I would recommend this show highly, and I hope they are back next year. Only downside to the night was the sound was a bit on the over-amplified side. Particularly the bass guitar and base drum. Deep low notes seemed to be almost piercing. Also the lighting seemed to be on a random program kind of like those toys that dance to sounds or music, rather than one specific to the music , artists or show.

Nice playlist. Dialogue was a little rough and campy, but the humor was nice to have at a Christmas show. An enjoyable event!

Aimee Mann sounded great and was gracious and funny with the somewhat lame audience (if she was as tired of the same people in the audience shouting out the same "we love you, Aimee" line as the rest of us were, she didn't show it). The sound could have been a little better -- sometimes it was hard to make out her lyrics because the music was overpowering her, but in general, she sounded really good.

I love Aimee Mann, and there was a lot of talent on stage, but the theme of the show and the skits were very disjointed and strange, which completely detracted form the music. It, at times, was like a high school play, leaving one squirming in one's seat. It was odd and uncomfortable. Sorry Aimee.

Terrific venue for her- Town Hall- and she and the band did their usual amazing, highly professional set. A highlight- an acoustic interlude of just Aimee on guitar singing stuff from Magnolia and other early albums. For some reason, this time I was able to focus on the awesome bridges she writes- truly masterful stuff. The whole show was a tremendous lift.

Not really a Christmas show, although Aimee did play a few xmas songs, the theme was kinda anti Christmas or a goof on Christmas with the theme being a murder mystery. Aimee's voice was great and Susanna Hoffs kicked ass! If you were looking for a holiday show this might disappoint. If you are looking for Aimee to sing a few good songs and are a fan of Susanna Hoffs then by all means check it out. I have seen Aimee a few times over the past 25 years and have always enjoyed her shows, but would probably pass on the next X-mas concert.

We'd seen Aimee Mann a while back, and this concert was so much fun! I loved the great mix of holiday music, regular songs, special guests, murder and mystery. This really got me in the Christmas spirit and helped me remember how much I love Aimee Mann.
