Excellent interaction b4, during, & even after show 4 those with time 4 him. Breath~takingly spectacular show as always; blown away by his vision~both verbally & with his axe! A must-see for anyone with a soul. Worth it 2 go 2 moon & back 4 Vai; after all, he does it several times over in a night of performing 4 us! An entirely uplifting, life~altering day & night. Steve helps you feel what he does each note along the way; a rare connection with a Musician and an absurd level of clarity overcomes & will never leave you as you listen. A Spiritual experience to be savored. Steve is a magical Musician & person. I feel blessed 2 have spent time with him again & honored by his humility, generosity, & kindness. He reaches the child within while he speaks and plays & you leave with every cell in your body feeling healed in an otherworldly fashion. Love and thanks for making this earth a much more enjoyable place, Mr. Steve Vai <3 You are a reason 2 want 2 stay & overcome. You become the Music; your instrument an appendage of necessity & necessary release for you, Pure and utter Bliss and Joy for others----> Thank You.

Being a huge music fan and concert goer, I have seen several concerts. This was my first time seeing Steve Vai though. Passion and Warfare is probably my favorite album he has released. With this being the 25th anniversary tour I knew the set would be great, however I wasn't prepared for the show side of it. The video show that went along with the music was worth the price of the ticket. The band members are all great musicians and complement each other very well. Almost 3 hours on stage with no opening band. There were a few guest surprises in video form during the show that added to the fun. This has to be in the top 3 concerts I have attended in my almost 30 years of going to concerts. May have been my first Vai show, but it won't be my last. Besides the show I also had the EVO VIP package. This part of my review is just on that. I feel that you get your money's worth with this package. The Q&A lasted over an hour with Steve giving stories for answers to fan's questions instead of a couple words. Quite a bit of merchandise included in the package. Sound check was fun to watch and was almost a mini show. I took my nephew for his birthday, as a spur of the moment idea, I asked if they could play Happy Birthday to him during sound check. Sure enough they did and when they were done Steve handed him his pick. It made my nephew's day even more special for him. I will be getting this package again next time I see him.

I've seen Vai in this same venue before, but this show left a lot to be desired. After the doors opened at 7:30, we spent an hour watching the tech team do sound checks before anyone even took the stage. I don't recall this happening at the 2005 tour for Real Illusions: Reflections, and this struck me as a little amateur for Vai. Bethany McClelland (from The Voice) opened, and was absolutely fantastic. I hadn't heard her before, and neither had my husband, and both of us were simply in awe. To quote him as she left the stage, "well THAT was a pleasant surprise!" Two days later, he is still talking about how amazing she was. After she left the stage around 9:00, tech team came out AGAIN for MORE SOUND CHECKS. The show didn't start for another half an hour, and once it finally did, the battery in one of Steve's distortion pedals went dead in the middle of a song. ... Really? After an hour and a half of sound and tech checks, no one noticed the battery was dying in one of the pedals? Vai himself performed his older work much better than the tracks from his new album, and seemed a little disconnected from this audience. Of the things that irked me: Bethany returned to the stage to perform a song with the band, and after that hour and a half of sound checks, we couldn't hear her (or any other vocals) over the instruments. It was a shame, because we later listened to the new album, and what we missed out on in not being able to hear her. The biggest issue, however, was that harpist. She HAS to go. I don't know who decided to add her, but she is AWFUL. I generally love harp music, and I like to trust Steve's choice in musicians, but her technique was not impressive, and she kept doing this hideous "strumming" that just sounded like a three-year-old slamming the strings on a guitar as hard as possible. She contributed nothing to the music but that muddy strumming, and her solo was so painful I actually gave up my front-and-center space to go to the bathroom so I didn't have to suffer through it. Phillip Bino on bass was fantastic, and at the risk of ruining the moment, he brings out an upright bass during the show and rocks it. Seriously amazing and enjoyable, and you simply can't get much more epic than this badass bassist busting out a classical instrument. Jeremy Colson took the drums this time, apparently fresh off a tour with Billy Joel. Great drummer, and at one point he disappears from the stage only to emerge with a portable drum set (bedecked with skulls and LEDs). I wish I could find out if he was the source of the voice of his "talking skull"; he looked to me to be doing the "ventriloquist lips", so I wouldn't be surprised to find out he was. And if so, that's just awesome. Finally, Dave Weiner on guitar. He's a Vai staple, and he will remind you why during this show. Loved his solo, great work as always. Despite a (mostly) great band, this show was still largely not up to par with what you can usually expect from Vai and his team, and I simply cannot let go of that godawful harpist, so I have to give an extraordinary musician an average rating.

Steve Vai's show at the House of Blues Orlando was fantastic! It was a great mix of new material and a healthy dose of songs from his deep catalog. Beyond his stellar guitar playing, Steve Vai is a comfortable performer who truly connects to his audience. I found myslelf laughing out loud on more than one occassion as he and his guitar playfully toyed with the audience. He added a harp player for this tour and that was a fun addition to his band. As a performer myself, I know that techical difficulties can crop up and take you off of your game. There were a few: battery in distortion peddle, Steve clicking the wrong patch, guitar cable/input jack cutting out momentarily...but it was all handled quickly and it did not in any way hurt the show. It in fact added that human element that for me at least, added to the connection with the artist. I hope he returns in the next few years! I will definitely be there!

We love Steve Vai. We just thought that in the beginning it was unprofessional for them to be doing a sound check while the people waited. Why couldn't that be done before the people entered the concert. It was a little distracting for the staff person walking back behind the set doing whatever he was doing. If another musician is needed to perform the little that the wondering staff was doing to help the harpist, than so be it. We thought the other musician's solos were amazing, however we thought they over powered Steve at times. The comedy and the light display was very entertaining. We would love to see his show again when comes to Florida, to WALT DISNEY WORLD not Disneyland.

I wanted to see Steve vai for years now and I finally got my chance and let me just say I have never been to such and amazing show. He is the greatest guitarist I have ever seen. He puts on a great show and he plays the most difficult things effortlessly. His band are world class musicians as well and let me just say the harp was incredible. The highlights for me had to be rescue me bury me, the fire garden piece acoustic, for the love of god with the harp, and the encore of the end of fire garden suite was out of this world. That was one show I will never forget oh... And building the church was insane!!!

Vai is one of my favorite guitarists, and he never disappoints. Instead of the female violinist who was on his live DVD, he brought along a harpist! Not your typical stodgy classical harpist, but an edgy, sort of goth woman with a flair for the dramatic. Vai delivered a lively, energetic, inventive and rocking set that will please even the non-Vai fans. One of the highlights was a jam with Steve on acoustic guitar, his second guitarist playing a Coral electric sitar, the drummer playing a strap on percussion set, upright bass and the harpist! Very "world music!" Unfortunately, the venue really sucked! See review below...

The musicians were great, but unfortunately the sound was terrible; the singer's microphone did not work properly, and she could not be heard for the only one song she sang with Vai's band; Vai's guitar sound level (main instrument) was in the background; bass was too loud; the sound in general was kind of noisy; the harp's amplification failed at the harpist only solo, they gave up on it.

I was privy to something truly amazing when one of my best buds suggested we go down to The Grove in Anaheim 09/09/07 to see of the great masters, Steve Vai. I had no idea what I was in for. I should have brought a heavy duty spatula to scrape my jaw up off the floor (or at least a pair of zircon-encrusted tweezers, thank you very much). Not only were the opening acts and the performers that surrounded Steve all amazing in their own right, but I was simply mesmerized by Vai's abilities. He is more fluid than water, and then all of a sudden, the distortion and the overdrive kick in, and he is crunchier than a bag full of tortilla chips and glass! The man of 173 faces blew my mind that night, and I am now a huge Steve Vai fan. I had always heard the name over the years by those "in the know," but there is nothing like being there. He is, hands down, one of the very best, a true musician, and one not to miss.

This was my first time to see Vai live, but not my last. I was not disappointed. Not only is he an amazing guitarist he is a consummate showman as well. I am certain that the intimacy of the venue helped but besides his own virtuosity (via audio/video technology) we were able to share shredding moments from Satriani, Petrucci, Tommy Emmanuel, Zappa, and others. The band he is traveling with is SPOT on with every note and is beyond awesome. You can tell that they were really enjoying the evening as much as those that they were playing for. They played for 2 hours which was well worth the money...we all may be getting older but Vai has not lost his passion or intensity for the instrument. It appeared that everything that he played was effortless. 25 years ago "Passion & Warfare" changed the way people thought about instrumental guitar--the fact that Vai remains present and "in-the-moment" now (25 years later) with the instrument only attests to his vision for his music and it certainly shows in a live setting. DO NOT MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY!!

Driving 3 hours to the State theater to see Steve Vai was worth it. He is a good guitar player, musician, entertainer. He is funny and humble, down to earth. I enjoyed 2 hours and 45 minute of his music. On the back screen, it starts a video footage of devil guitar player, Steve of 80s film, Crossroad. He played entire album of Passion and Warfare which is my favorite vai album. MTV music videos of that album was shown on the screen which brought me a nostalgia. Straight and up tight band with a lead guitar, assistant guitar with minimum keyboards and drums. No violin this time. No vocal of course. At the gift corner, they were selling his posters, T shirts, autographed CD and LPs and I got one of them. Beautiful and historical venue. The area seems to be safe at night. I saw several police cars to check security.

Had problems with sound system and Steve's guitar rig. Show stopped barely a minute in when his rig went down. Fixed after a few minutes and down again. Got that straightened out, so not a big deal - was entertaining anyway. The sound system was hit and miss. Very focused one minute and mud the next. Steve is still an amazing guitarist, but his solos were becoming very long-winded and misguided. The squeals and dive bombs only go so far, and they were really drawn out in my opinion. From the headline notes, surprises were in store - so, Joe Satriani comes to mind, as well as others. Well, Joe and Petrucci did show, but were pre-recorded on the big screen... kind of a cheesy letdown. Don't get me wrong, it was still great to see him, and the amazing sound and style he has developed.

We started the meet and greet with a Q&A session, which was very relaxed and intimate. Steve answered every question in detail and left no stone unturned. Steve then took pictures with each and every one of us there, which was followed by autographs for everyone. After the autographs were done we went to the stage and watched Steve and the band do their soundcheck. After an amazing soundcheck, we had a brief intermission before the show started. The show itself was nothing short of amazing.
Overall a great show. A little something for everyone. For me, Zakk was the best and brought the most to the table. Sound was very good. Only complaints were 1.) no revolving stage. That would have made the show even better 2.) a lot of piped in music (back tracks) which I was surprised about. Overall this was a memorable night and a great show. I hope they do it again.
I am a huge Vai fan, and have seen him perform live many times. He is, in my opinion, the best guitar player in the world. I have been to a couple of the G3 shows, but this one had a different feel. Each of these players are excellent, without exception...however, when Nuno joked that they were getting paid by the note, the results seemed like he may not have been joking at all. They went out of their way not to play songs it seemed, with the exception of Zack Wylde who did sing and play three songs, but played so loud that it actually became dizzying. Relentless...but ok, it's a night of guitarists soloing, which on the surface seems pretty cool. I'm convinced that Malmsteen was just riffing over bass and drums. After an hour of that, your ears need to hear a melody of some sort! Steve Vai mailed it in. No real production value to his songs tonight. No "For the Love of God" no "Black Forest" one or two recognizable songs from Vai tonight for me. The jams were exhaustingly tedious. Any one of these incredible players, with their bands on that stage would have been great. Unfortunately for me, with the whole group riffing over each other, it quickly became a NoodleFest.
We had VIP Meet & Greet tickets & I'm glad we purchased these - we had photos taken with Generation Axe, recieved some SWAG & then they autographed an item of our choice!! I have to say, each guitarist put on a great show & were so good to the fans, but Zakk Wylde blew everyone away!! He played the longest & the hardest, playing with his teeth, going into the audience while playing & sounded amazing!! He is one awesome performer!! If you get the chance, do not miss this show!!
All performers put on an amazing show! I purchased the "Meet and Greet" ticket package and was not let down. Got to meet the "Guitar Gods" and watch them shred 3 rows in from stage.
I figured it was gonna be just another G3 type of show but was surprised by the format. They opened up with all of them coming out and jamming a couple quick instrumentals and then left the stage to the first guy up. Then he brought out the next guy and so forth. They used the same drummer, bassist, keyboardist for all the artist which saved time and was cool because there was no "rhythm gtr players" and the sound was raw and just them. seating was great and security did an alright job not letting people walk up in front of u from their seats in the back.
If you love guitar, you can't miss this tour. Pay the extra cash to be close to the stage. You won't regret it. Every player is a monster in his own right and they won't disappoint. Vai & Zack were the best at covering both sides of the stage and Zack went up both center aisles to give something special to the crowd. I won't reveal the surprises, but there are several when more than one is on the stage at the same time.
The show in Nashville was terrific! All the performances were good. Each player had a good set on their own and then did some jams together. I went to see them all but really wanted to see Yngwie Malmsteen cause he hasn't toured in my area. We drove from NW Georgia to Nashville.
Abasi, Bettencourt, and Vai were Great. Thier leads were all part of songs. Wylde is a great player, but leads went on way to long. Wish he would have played 5 shorter songs instead of the three drawn out ones he did. Malmsteen should have stayed home, act is just old. Backing band did a great job too
Excellent grouping of some of the most talented and diverse guitar players of our time. Couldn't have been more pleased with the line up or venue. Excellent !!
This is probably the hardest review i've had to do in my life. This was a complete power trip from all the musicians. This was not a concert by far. If you are in to guitars, show quality, and loud music, this is the holly grail of performances. This was the closest you will be to any supreme being. Yes; Mr. Malmsteen's sound had a few problems, but nevertheless, it was a damn SPECTACULAR show. Mr. Betancourt was just splendid on his performannce. In terms of Zakk Wylde, i cannot say anything because my opinion would be biased. And Mr. Vai, did exactly what he knows how to well. Wish is impress. I have being in the music industry for close to 10 years now, and i lost track of how many concerts and presentations I have being to. But I can assure you that Generation Axe, is in the top 3 of my whole life performance experiences.
This is a must-see show for a very wide audience. The combination of talent and styles makes for some amazing performances. We went with the front row seats and the meet and greet package since we were meeting five awesome musicians at one time. All of the guys were very friendly and took the time to talk with us. You will not be disappointed with this lineup.
The show was awesome with one exception,Zakk...We had just witnessed him at the Experience Hendrix show...He is very into himself....Terrible lead work and not working the fret board (neck of the guitar) whatsoever at all. If you can tolerate his so called performance, you will enjoy this concert as everyone else is outstanding!

For a certain portion of contemporary rock music fans, there is a preferred inner circle of recording artists who produce studio and live material once referred to by a part-time suburban guitarist as "musician's music." Not merely content with catchy pop tunes, these fans support vocalists, guitarists, bassists, drummers, and keyboard players whose skills are untold notches above the average garage band's musical abilities. Hence, the players on such songs and stages are widely considered to be the best available at any given time. Surely, every era has had its own "shredders," musicians who are doing things on their instrument of choice - voice included - far beyond the comprehension of casual listeners and followed with keen awareness by devotees, many of which cite the hard rock and heavy metal genres as rock locales where one often finds the best players. Jimi Hendrix was operating on another plateau compared to most 1960s guitarists - who were all fully aware that Hendrix was breaking new ground. In the early 1970s, that counterpart would be Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple then Rainbow. By the late 1970s/early 1980s, Edward Van Halen filled that void and took his instrument to new heights in many respects. From the 1980s onward, followers in the footsteps of the aforementioned guitar players have included many who came out to support fellow axeman Tony Macalpine at the December 12 benefit concert at the Wiltern Theater, among the best indoor venues in the Los Angeles area. Led by Steve Vai, a Frank Zappa alumnus who has made his share of shredding solo albums, the Macalpine benefit, created to assist the longtime guitarist and pianist with medical bills for a recently diagnosed illness, also included John 5, Zakk Wylde, Ritchie Kotzen, Nuno Bettancourt, Tom Morello, and Paul Gilbert, all players who have gone over and above in various bands and solo efforts much of the past three decades. In addition, the night was covered in grand fashion by bassist extraordinaire Billy Sheehan, a shredder in his own right and Kotzen's peer in the supergroup Winery Dogs, keyboardist Derek Sherinian, who partnered with the main drummer of the night, Mike Portnoy, heir to the drumming throne started by drum shredder Neil Peart in the mid-1970s, in their 1990s band, Dream Theater. At one point, Portnoy, also in the current outfit Winery Dogs, brought Sheehan and Kotzen out for an impromptu surprise set with the full Winery Dogs lineup. A variety of talented supporting musicians also joined the team onstage at different periods throughout the nearly five-hour night. In point, Edward Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, and other hard rock monster groups and individuals were quoted throughout the proceedings, first by John 5 who, in one full burst of medley jamming, referenced many guitar players and bands of importance in this area, each in short stints of riffing and harmonics, then by Bettancourt and others who quoted classic songs and moments in rock history with dynamic, melodic, aggressive playing. For nascent or part-time fans of the rock era of music which began in full 60 years ago, the Macalpine benefit might have been an overkill of musicianship, a fair criticism for a light interest in this world. However, for serious musicians and ardent admirers of the abilities of those with supreme musical virtuosity, the evening was a five-star event unlike any other.

What's not to love?! Vai is still the best and most prolific guitarist on this here planet! The band was more scaled down than concerts passed, but still impressive. Nice to see he had Phillip Bynoe again. Jeremy's walking drum kit is always entertaining too! Keep it up Steve! We love you!

Saw Steve Vai for the first time in Columbus at the Newport Music Hall. What a FANTASTIC show! Steve Vai is an amazing performer and fantastically talented musician. I'm awed by the duality of his performing. His sense of time is amazingly precise, yet he also performs with a very natural fluidity. You don't see that combination very often, if ever. His band was FANTASTIC. This was a high-energy show -- the band seemed like they were really enjoying themselves, and Steve Vai continuously acknowledged and connected with the audience. I bought tickets to this show for my husband. But guess what? Now _I_ am a Steve Vai fan!!! -- Thank you Steve Vai for a memorable event! LOVED IT!!!

Steve Vai is an amzing guitar player and a great showman! He made great use of the stage in a smaller vunue. Used some creativity to make some really cool effects for a smaller set up. It was a really fun show. The backup guitarist is pretty good too!

Steve Vai once again proved his place as one of the premier rock guitarists in the world today. Not only did the show highlight his vast knowledge of guitar technique and ability, the show also provided the opportunity for his backing band members to reveal their incredible musical talents as well. An ample dose of on stage antics and special effects, combined with an audience participation segment, created a well rounded evening of memorable entertainment. This is a must see show and cannot wait for another chance to see this awesome performance!

Wow! Steve Vai rocked the house tonight! The Canyon Club is a nice, intimate venue with good food and service. Tonight was about real Rock 'n Roll - no samples, no rapping, no computer generated rhythms. Real singing, real instruments being played by creative, talented musicians... Steve's "Ultra Zone" costume was a highlight for me. One thing you can always be assured of with Steve is that anyone that plays in his band will be a masterful, technically adept players. Every player was superb. I was even surprised that I enjoyed Beverly McClelland's blues. I picked up one of Dave Weiner's (Vai's rhythm guitarist) CD's tonight at the show. His playing was impressive and entertaining and the CD is excellent! This was the last show in North America for this tour. Glad I caught the last one. Next they move on to Europe to finish out the year. Thanks Steve & Beverly!

This is the first time I see Mr Vai & Co. playing live and trust me, every penny was worth the awesome night we had by joining this genius and sharing with him this God given gift he and his musicians have. Three hours and a half of a superb performance which included a highly underrated Beverly McClellan singing with heart and soul for the delighted audience. This show builds a bond between Mr. Vai and the audience that ends up being a gather of friends loving and enjoying the spirit of music together without selfishness. Definitely, an A1+ musician and a "must see" show!

Steve Vai's show at the Uptown Theatre Napa was an awesome show. Steve's guitar playing is incredible. It was my first time seeing him in person. I would go again in a heartbeat. I bought the tickets as a present for a friend who has been a fan of Steve's for many years & has seen about every rock group there is or ever was. He was most impressed with this show & said this was one of his top 3-4 favorites concerts ever. Steve was very personable, interacting with the crowd, making jokes & he even brought his adult son up on stage at one point to help him "create" a song. He and the band played for almost 3 hours! He has a very talented band of musicians playing with him, all impressive on their own from his drummer to his rhythm guitar player Dave Weiner, bass guitarist and wild electric harpist. The theatre had great acoustics, great seats (4th row), easy parking (free!), good audience, all round exceptional experience!

To be able to witness Steve Vai's skill, passion and artistry is an event in life that will never be forgotten. He spoke with the audience and proved that he was human and down to earth. A must see show for those who appreciate musicianship. His surrounding musicians are fantastic as well and were able to keep up with Steve. There was an electric harpist that when you could hear her was great, but you could not here her very often. Out of about 80 shows i have seen this was a top 5 show!

II have seen Vai in the past and he just keeps getting better each time I see him. His showmanship is amazing. The way he includes the crowd and shows that he genuinely is thankful for the audience is rare in today s music industry. A Steve Vai concert is not a 90 minute guitar solo but an adventure for the sight and mind as well as the ears. The show is filled with lights, dancing, dialog and amazing energy. I would go to see this show night after night if that were ever a possibility.

Steve was his amazing self. With total command of his guitar and spot on interpretation of his music he was like a video game. It doesn't seem possible, but he's Steve Vai "he can play anything." Steve doesn't play in the box and if you have never seen the type of guitar-gymnastics he does it may seem he isn't really playing what he's playing. Played a number of new songs and also some of his past songs as well. I don't believe he did any covers and only 4 or 5 from Passion and Warfare. Didn't play the Attitude Song, but For the Love of God is a song I would hope he always plays (I think it is his best). The band was tight and held their musical ground without going overboard. The audience was there to see Steve and I was glad to get a taste of their music, but not 10 minute solos. For huge fans I would say look into getting the package to go to the sound check and question and answer session with Steve (I wish I had). Great theatrics-audience participation, lights, light show, wardrobe and cool-looking guitars.

I never saw Steve Vai play before, so we were very excited to go. It was a very long show, and it had some nice twists in it with different musicians and a create -a-song piece where he took some kids from the audience to create a new song and then jams out to it with his band - pretty cool to see how the master works. Honestly, being a guitar nut, I didn't know what we were getting ourselves into to by going to his performance. He was a true gentleman on stage and is technically proficient and his speed and antics with the guitar and with his costumes were pretty damn cool. However, he needs to vary his playing style and song choices a little more throughout the show, because his music all starts to sound alike, and is not that inspiring, even though he is one of the greatest guitarists alive. When he slows down, and creates different styles or plays other peoples great songs or jazzed up blue and spices them up, he is absolutely amazing. and almost untouchable. FYI, I am an Eddie Van Halen fan too - Steve seems faster, but unfortunately I was hoping he would be better. He does seem like a great guy though!

The concert was an amazing show with all the performers playing at their best to their fans enjoyment! Steve and his band made good contact with the members of the audience which kept everyone engaged in the show. The antics of the band added some humor to the show. It was a wonderful show that Steve and crew put on! The only down note, the audio engineer had the volume levels set to high for the small venue.

Steve Vai and his band (Dave, Jeremy, Phillip) still put on one of the best shows you will see. Steve brings a 2 hr 45 min supershow of some of his best songs and a complete playthrough of his Passion and Warfare album that put him on top as a virtuoso guitar player. Steve is a showman and always amazes and entertains with his playing and his humor. There are many cool videos and special guests included on this Vai retrospective. If you love rock guitar or you want to see somebody who owns his craft, you need to see this show.

Steve Vai was and still is a complete master of his instrument. I first saw Steve Vai when I was 13 years old and he was playing with David Lee Roth. I have been a fan ever since. It is really challenging to hold an audience's attention for a couple of hours with instrumental music. Steve Vai is not only an amazing guitarist but he is also an amazing performer. The twists and turns that his show takes during the evening is enough to satisfy people who don't typically listen to instrumental guitar music. My wife, who is not a big instrumental guitar fan, attended the show with me. She thoroughly enjoyed herself and is now a fan. In an age where most music is pre-manufactured and auto tuned, it is refreshing to see performers who actually have put time into learning their instrument. There aren't many like Steve Vai around. Please go support him and those like him while you have the chance.

I haven't seen Steve Vai in more years than I care to admit. He can still shred with the best of 'em, and his relentless chops show why he remains one of the best guitarists in the world.
