Grizzly Bear

GRIZZLY BEAR IN CONCERT:With their ethereal four-part vocal harmonies, a strong indie rock base, and a healthy dose of psychedelic experimentation, Grizzly Bear have become the accessible arthouse torchbearers of millennials who rock. At their live shows, they effuse beautifully dissonant melodies anchored by sharp instrumentation, topping it all off with stunning visuals. As they contemplate a follow-up to 2013's Shields, Grizzly Bear will leave it all on stage for fans at select 2014 tour dates, which include several solo appearances by band member Daniel Rossen. BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT: Originally a solo project for frontman Ed Droste in the early '00s, Brooklyn's Grizzly Bear slowly grew into a full band of proportionately talented performers.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra was a bit of a let down especially because I enjoyed their LP. But as far as Grizzly Bear's show is concerned, I was very impressed with their live sound. Sometimes, the album doesn't translate to the stage but Grizzly Bears' vocals are amazing. All the members voices were spot on and they are very tight sounding. Very impressed! Also, it was my first show at Radio City and I was blown away. I'm hoping I can see more shows at Radio City.

Showed up a little bit late and missed opener UMO. Walked in just as Grizzly Bear took the stage and the crowd erupted. This was the second show of their tour but you could not tell due to flawless delivery. I had seen them once before back in 2009 but this show was far superior! Thanks for an amazing show guys! Sound guy had the room pegged perfectly.

Really enjoyed the show, great sound/ special effects...Was annoyed that one of the singers wanted us to get up and dance since its not really jamming music. The guy that plays 50 instruments was super cool. The audience was full of hipster/ flannel/ skinny jean guys which had me yearning for the coffee they usually serve to me. Not the best show I have ever seen but still worth the night out. Unknown Mortal orch was hard to listen to. The sound was jacked up on the instuments, poor on the vocals and way too loud all around- I think I even winced once. 1st time I've ever heard the Ryman sound bad.

I liked this band a lot when I listed to their records, but seeing them live raised the bar to the absolute top for me. I highly recommend going to see them; it will improve your future experience of listening to their recorded stuff.

Grizzly Bear's show was almost perfect. Their sound on Veckatimest doesn't compare to their live show. There were a few times when the bass was unbearable during the show but, all in all, it was a good show. I would definitely recommend anyone to see them.

The band was incredible live, adding unexpected textures to already complex layers of music. The Beach @ Gov. Isl. was a perfect venue: intimate yet open with spectacular views of lower Manhattan skyline.

Grizzly Bear weren't so bad (not so great live either) but the gig was a wash-out. The evening was scheduled to start at 8pm, and you'd think the main band would be on by 9, or 9:30 at the latest, but no, Grizzly Bear only showed up at 10:30. By which point we were soaked from an hour of steady rain. The rest of Governor's Island isn't open on a Thursday, so you're basically stuck in the concert area and sandpit -- I think a lot of people got fed up because when we went back early, less than half way through the Grizzly Bear set, the ferry was packed with people!

The event itself was pretty good besides the horrible first opening band. The second opening band really pumped up the crowd though and got them ready for grizzly bear. It was my first concert so I wasn't sure what to expect and the waiting was getting a little out of hand but overall grizzly bear made the concert great like expected.

Chilly, rainy weather is never ideal for an outdoor show, so that was my biggest gripe and that can hardly be blamed on the bands. We made the mistake of thinking the only ferry there was departed at six, so we hit the island early and sat around in the somewhat miserable weather. My ears practically bled during Gang Gang Dance's set but I wasn't there to see them and was relieved that they played such a short set. The Walkmen were amazing - better than Grizzly Bear in my esteem. It was kind of epic to watch him croon and wail in the midst of the rain. In typical New York neurotic-fashion every jerk had their umbrellas up despite the fact that for the most part it was only drizzling, thus obscuring the stage, but the acoustics were good. Grizzly Bear had sound trouble and so we all waited about 40 minutes for them to actually go on, which was once again, miserable. The rain was hard & steady for a while and it was cold (will definitely reconsider a short dress the next time I'm going to an outdoor show in those weather conditions) but once they got up and moving, the sound was great, the lighting effects were great and people waited a TINY bit before they put their umbrellas up. We left before the show ended to beat the inevitable ferry rush, plus at that point five hours in the rain had taken their toll on us. I would definitely see them again!

I absolutely love grizzly bear don't get me wrong, and I have also attended many concerts where standing in the front has been no problem. Sadly when grizzly bear went on, after their hour long sound check, the sound was still wrong. The first two bands who opened had their sound checked in the rain as well and they sounded perfect. Something happened after to grizzly bears sound that completely destroyed any enjoyable listening experience, unless you had your ears plugged. Which was what most people around us had to do. There were parts in their set where i thought, "Oh my god my ears MUST be bleeding right now." The bass drums sound was so bad there were a group of us were chanting, "TURN THE BASS DRUM DOWN" every time they ended one of their songs. People had started to leave 20 minutes into their set, I left somewhere around 30. I wish I could have stayed longer because Grizzly Bear is one of my favorite bands, but it's not worth it to see your favorite band live and have it ruined with a horrible sound check job. Also I will not be returning to Governors Island for a show, the venue itself was horrible for sound. The process by which to get there was a bit of a hassle.

we roughed it out through the rain while Grizzly Bear blew everyones minds. I looked around during the first song and not a single person moved because we were all in awe. Once they playing a couple more songs people were grooving to the music. The rain kept coming and going but only at the right songs and it made the concert more enjoyable in my opinion. It was a flawless performance by everyone in the band along with an ideal setting, proper sound, and the right crowd!

okay, so the venue itself was very nice except the weather was real cruddy but nevertheless, the concert was unforgettable. no one cared for gang gang dance. they had like two fans in the audience. but grizzly bear oh god. they played most of the songs on veckatimest and they were amazing! their live performance was even better than their recordings. they didn't leave out anything people would hear in their recordings, even the small sounds people'd hear in the recordings and wonder what they were. ed droste was charming as hell, and daniel rossen's unique voice didn't fail to leave me in awe. probably the best live show i have ever been to.

I've never been to Governor's Island before and it's a great venue for a summer show, even though it rained a little bit. I mainly went to the concert for the venue and not the bands with whom I wasn't familiar. A mistake on my part. Grizzley Bear, The Walkmen and the other act all played their music fine, but they all lacked stage presence and there seemed to be a wall between the band and the crowd. However, I don't think many in the crowd really minded as a lot of people were toking up. I'm not a fan of the smell of grass and smoke so I left early into Grizzly Bear's set. I would love to go to Governor's Island for another show, but next time I'll be sure to go see an act that I know and like.

show was incredible. what can be said? only minor disappointment not to hear "red moon" but the walkmen were perfect. grizzly bear is always an amazing show, but the rain stopped and the sky rained down with music. and man, they were surreal. only downside was stressing about catching train because of waiting for ferry, then 2 subs then another train had to catch out by 1:30. daniel r. and all: you guys are the best. just the best.

This was the first music concert that I've been to for myself. The Veckatimist is my favorite cd of this year thus far. I was going to love the concert no matter what, and I did. The venue was small, but fitting for an indie band. I was surprised to be in the second row of people, when i reached there 45 minutes before the show. They rocked the stage. Like the cd, it was full of slow paced crescendos, ending in climactic rock riffs. I was amazed to see that their sound was created by 3 guitars, many pedals, and a few odd instruments. It doesn't have the light show that larger bands would have, but all i really wanted was to see and hear them play. I wished more people came, I felt bad. I also wished the audience wasn't so stiff! What a young audience the indie scene has. Oh, and shame on people not roaring for their opening act, Beach House!

Grizzly Bear played an amazing set. I feel like there may have been some technical difficulties but if there were then the band didn't let it show. Seats were perfect. Staff was very friendly and generous. I wish I could see the same show again. The crowd was a little rowdy for such a mellow performance but you can't choose your crowd, and I rather enjoyed the clapping during the last song of the encore. I hope the band liked it too, as it was actually in time with the music unlike what happens at most concerts where the audience has no sense of tempo.

What an awesome display of the prowess of Grizzly Bear as a live band! The group executed their intricate arrangements and lush harmonies with what appeared to be relative ease, and it truly was a pleasure to hear and watch. Vocals sound great, and even the little intricate sounds you would think would be added in the editing room are present with sound boards and unexpected musical instruments. I have been following Grizzly Bear for a couple of years. I actually bought their new release Sheilds. I had only heard Grizzly Bear digitally, until Wednesday night. Certainly when listinging to a download or CD you can hear every nuance and the voices were likely produced. Let's face it, how does a singer play with his voice, over such a broad range as Edward Droste without a little tweaking is post production? How does a band sound as tight without having so many tracks to adjust? We have all heard it before, great studio artists who sound completely different on stage. Grizzly Bear is one of the very few bands today who actually sounds better live. They play and sing off each other rather than the producer. I'm not knocking produced music, it has opened up a whole new world of perfection or chaos, both good, which couldn't happpen live. I enjoy many highly produced bands. Grizzly Bear playing to the full Greek was a game-changer. The audience was already wild about them, and their energy and excitement notched up the band's energy and vibe. They were on fire. The band and the audience were one and it was a concert I'll remember for years.

The show started around 8 with Lower Dens, who were fine but got a bit bland after 3 songs or so. After that for about 45 minutes and 20 minutes of gear setup and mini soundcheck Grizzly Bear came on stage. And Wow. Everything was more than I could have expected. The lighting was awesome, very dynamic with some interesting theming provided by odd Gaslight Jellyfish stage fixtures bobbing up and down peacefully. And the band was Amazing.

I was surprised and disappointed by Lower Dens because I love their recorded music, but their performace was really unimpressive; the only person in the band with any energy/movement/style whatsoever was the bass player. The guitarist and drummer didn't look like they were doing anything at all (i've never seen such a slow/uninspired drummer in my life)... But Grizzly Bear was full of energy and the performance was flawless! Every song seemed as inspired as when they wrote it! They also had an interesting light installation that danced around behind them. All in all, the theatre was beautiful, the lighting, the sound, the view was great! Incredible experience! First time to the Fox Theatre and I will definitely return!

The Grizzly Bear show on 8/2/13 in Cincinnati was one of the top ten shows I've seen EVER. The band members are super musicians- the bass player might be the best I've ever heard, and is somehow even better live. The songwriting is innovative and memorable, and the singing (all four guys, but especially Ed, Dan, and the bass player) is just great to hear live. The drummer is outstanding. The show was a real treat, an emotionally fulfilling and draining experience.

Simon and Garfunkel + Beach Boys + Do Wop + Brooklyn Hipters = Grizzly Bear. Close vocal harmony by four amazing voices. Esoteric lyrics, sophisticated arrangement and production. Lights and fog. Transcendent. Now if the youngsters in the audience would just sit down, shut up and listen. ;)

Grizzly Bear is, by far, one of the bands I have ever seen live. Their Miami debut was incredible, opening with "Speak in Rounds" and playing a lot of great songs from their newest album, Shields. Ed and Dan sang beautifully, with great instrumentation by Chris and Chris. Really enjoyed the lighting in this show. The opening act was also incredible, Majical Cloudz! I had heard of them before and their new album, Impersonator sounds great. But Devon's vocals live are absolutely incredible, creating such an atmospheric experience when he performed live. Overall, awesome experience and I can't wait until they come back!

Honestly, the event was really really fun only because I love the band. My group and I were able to get to the front of the crowd and maintain our position. Luckily the Ed Droste and Chris Taylor were right in the foreground of our view. We were thrilled by the performance. At times the lighting was a little abrasive because they used intense strobes. There was technicolor lighting that was really cool. The band also played mostly shields but a LOT of old hits which was awesome. The venue itself was a little stinky, the linoleum was coming off the floor and sticking to our shoes. But, you really can't complain because the ritz provides adequate service.

Usually, the band that's opening for the main event excites one and gets one pumped up; however, Majical Cloudz was extremely repetitive and awkward. The performers looked nervous which made me feel nervous. I'm sure they'll become much more comfortable as they perform more. By the time Grizzly Bear opened, I was exhausted, but it was an amazing performance with a beautiful light show.

There was a mutual admiration, attraction and chemistry between band and audience at The Ritz Ybor. The Grizzly Bear set list, stage design and light show kept us stoked the entire show.

One of the best concerts I've ever gone to. People in El Paso really enjoyed having Grizzly Bear play here. I really hope they come back. One of the most creative bands out there (musically).

Grizzly Bear put on such a great show, even better than I expected. I've seen them and The Shins at Tricky Falls in the last couple months now and even though I'm more familiar with The Shins music, I'd have to say the Grizzly Bear show was superior. Owen Pallet, the opening act, was actually really good too.

I was really impressed by both the opening band as well as Grizzly Bear. When Owen Pallett came onstage, I had no idea who he was; I had never heard his songs before. But once he started playing, he was incredible! I loved how he used the violin in a completely different way, with the loop pedal and a badass drummer, as well as an awesome guitarist. Then when Grizzly Bear came on with all their energy and Dos Equis beer, it was unbelievable! They have incredible talent, especially with their backing vocals. They talked to the crowd a lot and tried to get us really involved.. it felt so personal. It was super awesome being right at the front, because you got to see them up close (I was also able to get the setlist!). They seemed so down-to-earth and like simple people who just wanted to be able to share their sensational music.

Grizzly Bear put on an amazing show at the HOB in Houston. The evening was very special and the band connected well with their audience. I would highly recommend seeing them. I know I will see them again when they come back to Texas. Yee Ha!

Both Grizzly Bear and Owen Pallet were great. I love the intimacy of the House of Blues (was in the Balcony) - but found that this show - like most of the ones there - was too loud!!

I was very impressed by the show. The band was amazing flooding the room with sound which was only improved by the amazing lights. Unfortunately the crowd wasn't inclined to pay attention. The crowd paying 50 bucks to chit chat over a band isn't usually a problem but with a group that has softer/slower songs it can be a distraction.

My boyfriend who got me into Grizzly Bear was unable to make the PGH show because he had to go to VA to see his brother in law become Catholic. He told me I would surely be closer to God at the show than he would be at church. He was right. This was beautiful and amazing. I was blown away by how great they were live. They are even better live than on recording. Big, deep, beautiful sounds. They set list was wonderful and the vibe was intoxicating.

Grizzly Bear's final encore "All We Ask" exhibited the fact that they have enough musical talent to dazzle a crowd with just a single tom-tom, an acoustic guitar, and 4 voices. They don't need complex and expensive lighting to put on an impressive show, but the lack of in-house-lighting at Carnegie Hall of Oakland did remove some of the sheen from an otherwise sublime performance. This, in combination with a slightly over-amplified bass guitar, was the only issue that I had with an otherwise splendid musical experience.

So first of all I purchased tickets on the balcony, but when me and my 2 guests sat down, we realized that no grown man could actually fit in the room alotted for your legs. We went down to ask what we were supposed to do, and they simply gave us wristbands to go down to the floor. Once the concert started Grizzly Bear really lost everyone after the first song. Instead of treating it like a true live show and jamming as a band of this size really should, it ended up being a monotone collection of sleep-inducing sounds that was putting the crowd to sleep. The harmonies they had were really cool, but everything else about the show was making we yawn. Was incredibly dissapointed as I am a big Grizzly Bear fan and loved the new album.

Fantastic band!!!!!! Pretty sucky sound at the Fox Theater in Oakland, though the venue itself is lovely with a very cool bar area outside the concert area. Sound was waaaaaay too bass-heavy and waaay too loud and mushy/reverb-y to hear the exquisite beauty of Grizzly Bear's music, guitar sounds, keyboard sounds and especially their gorgeous vocals. Sounded best when the kick drum and looooow keyboard sounds were NOT playing. I love love the band, they gave a good performance, but the beauty of their music did not come across. Not sure if it's their sound person or the Fox Theater; I've been disappointed in sound there before. Elvis Costello (sound was set for old people no doubt) sounded fantastic at the Fox Theater.

Grizzly Bear was nearly flawless at Keller! The Venue was perfect for this kind of band. Intimate, rustic, organic. The lights and floating lanterns that moved to the beats of the music were totally awesome and really added a nice but non-distracting aurora to the sounds from the band.

Grizzly Bear put on a breathtaking show in Portland. Their multi-layered sound was spot on and their set list powerful. The stage and lights were fantastic. They just got bumped up to my favorite band after this.
