They sounded even better live than on the album! Plus the addition of sax and second guitar was a nice touch.

Small intimate setting. Not a bad spot in the place. On the floor, or at the bar. Great atmosphere.

I'm always looking for venues outside of NYC or Philly. Any clubs in the VILLAGE are a problem with traffic but if the club is in the Williamsburg section of BROOKLYN then it's a double dose of mind numbing traffic. So- getting to the BROOKLYN BOWL for this show was a nightmare. But even if you live in the city and take the subway or cab the club is still mediocre. Navy seals training is required to get to the bar for a beer at this sold out event. Once there I found out that they have no bottled water for my date- whaaaaaaaat! No bottled water in 2014! The sound was ok- nothing great! Caught the last song from the openers THE DISTRICTS. As usual I did my homework in preparation for the show and I was looking forward to seeing this young band barely out of High School. ROB GROTE leads this band that is on my TOP 30 NEW BANDS FOR 2014 But- I was there for HOUNDMOUTH and they were excellent playing songs off of their great debut album FROM THE HILLS BELOW THE CITY. The band is co- fronted by the super cute KATIE TOUPIN and guitar wizard MATT MYERS. KATIE has learned to work her sexiness in a classy cutesy way which adds to the bands stage presence. But she is also a great singer bringing great harmony and some excellent lead vocals to the table. also- I was big time impressed with the guitar work of MATT MYERS- the dude could play! These two produce great vocal harmonies as well. HOUNDMOUTH came in 17th on my TOP 30 NEW BANDS OF 2013.

Fresh from their performance on the Letterman Show, Houndmouth was everything we hoped and expected. The foursome delivered their original music for the hometown crowd with much enthusiasm and professionalism. The Belle of Louisville offered an historical, intimate venue floating in the Ohio. There in lies the rub... the "stage" was on the same level as the standing crowd. If one was not pushy and rude there was no way to see the band. It was a frustration that detracted from the concert. Houndmouth's show and music were great! The Belle is iconic. I just wish we could have seen the band.

Incredible. The Belle of Louisville is one of the most beautiful venues I've ever seen, and Houndmouth were brilliant. A grass roots folk band that screams Louisville, KY.

Houndmouth is unbelievably amazing! I just discovered who they were in March and this was my fourth time seeing them. They played Forecastle on Friday, but spending extra on the special after party on Saturday was more than worth it!!!

Houndmouth is by far one of the best bands of its genre I've seen live in NYC. Their playful energy, down-home melodies, and rough-and-tumble lyrics are perfectly blended into a recipe of pure, good musical entrainment! (Not to mention that each band member has his/her very own sex appeal.) Can't wait for their first full-length album in June!

I love this band's recorded music and was really looking forward to seeing them live in a small intimate setting like Teragram Ballroom. Unfortunately, they were just OK. Not bad, not great. Also, where's the girl. Her sultry voice and good looks rounded off the sound and appearance of Houndmouth in youtube videos. But she was nowhere to be found on Monday and I was disappointed. Songs like Hey Rose, Sedona and Cousin Greg are some of my favorites in the past 3-5 years. I was hoping to hear others such as Casino, but again didn't happen because...the girl was AWOL. Please bring her back so the focal point isn't three scrawny mid-western dudes shaking their tight white jeans.

One of my favorite bands, but apparantly they have decided to become someone else. All the players played and sung well. But the new music is unrecognizable as being from Houndmouth. They seemed to produce a "wall of sound" on their new stuff and there was no articulation among the various instruments. A poor sound mix heavy on bottom end contributed to the disappointment. The trademark sound of Houndmouth was not there at all. Even on the old stuff it seemed they were more interested in being rockers instead of being Houndmouth. The loss of Katie also hurt them both in the absence of her lead vocals and the loss of her harmonizing. The saxes were good and were enjoyable. The Tetragram Ballroom acoustics were good, but I would like to be able to sit down as well as stand. The stage was high enough so that I was able to see everyone on stage even with no slope up towards the rear of the audience area.. They must have had a red eye flight out after the show because I thought they owed their loyal followers a far longer set, or at least a decent encore. I will not just go out and buy the new CD as I expected to do, I will check it out on Amazon Music first. But I am afraid they have lost me. I will just have to be happy with the previous stuff.

I've been a Houndmouth fan for a while, gotten to know their music and personality well. I have no problem saying it was a fantastic show, and the venue was perfect. Truth is that deep down I want to give it 5 stars, but there were a couple of surprises I feel could have been managed better. While it wasn't exactly a secret, one of the original band member's sudden departure was not effectively publicized (see picture above, which includes all four founding memebers), and I feel the fans had more of a right to be informed and expect that the one female voice in a band known for its harmony would be replaced with either/or male voice(s), a keyboard and dual saxophones. Again, the music was fantastic, as were the performances, especially when they had to run the play after calling an audible at the line, so to speak. Knowing any of this prior to the show would not have changed how many tickets I purchased. I just would have appreciated knowing that I wasn't going to see Houndmouth as they were -- four great, young musicians with "I'll never sell out" chips on their shoulders. Instead we heard great music and saw a really, really good, full band and a pretty decent size production, from costume to lights to a bit of choreography.

This was by far one of the best shows I've ever been to. Houndmouth is one of those rare bands who sound better live. Every one in the band sings and they all have great and distinct voices. They also know how to play eachother's instruments, each rotating/switching between songs effortlessly. I've never seen that before. The opening band was also pretty great, Duncan Fellows from Austin. Both bands made suprise appearances for a song making it feel like a communal experience. You know everyone on stage were having a great time. Everyone on that stage is talented. It's a shame music like this is rarely heard on the radio. Yet I'd like to thank 105.3 The Shark for Sedona. I would not have found this band. You feel their heart and passion in the music. Comfort food for the ears and soul.

Excellent show. Great sound quality - could hear every vocal clearly. Real cool that the band members seemed to really like each other, also immensely appreciative of the packed, enthusiastic crowd. Speaking of the crowd, it appeared to me that the venue was definitely oversold. I've been to a crapload of shows and this was the most crowded that I can remember - you could barely lift your beer to your mouth it was so shoulder to shoulder, much less try to get to the restroom. Also it took forever to get a drink - Madison: bring in some independent contractor bartenders for shows that you oversell!

Houndmouth was amazing, but Ticketmaster and Madison way oversold. Way overcrowded. I'm 6'1'' and average build and had a tough time seeing the stage. The event was way oversold, and it was oversold at the expense of the safety of the concert goers.

Houndmouth continues to be one of the best bands of the year out there. The Madison Theatre however is one I will reconsider when going to see an act there again. Oversold, overcrowded, and understaffed at the bar. The upstairs is especially awkward with table seating that prevents more accommodation for the folks attending. Plus security in the balcony instilled a "Footloose" like police of no dancing even when the seated folks started moving around in their seats..very strange.

Well rehearsed, very tight indy sound They sound better live than recorded Fun, upbeat musics with witty lyrics that you can actually understand in a live setting. Suitable for all audiences ! First, I was surprised that Houndmouth, at the peak of their career, performed at a relatively small venue in Portland, ME. Next. the ticket price was, to say the least, a terrific value. Houndmouth themselves was equally impressed at the fan reception on a Monday night, in a very small market. The performance was spot on. The sound was clear, especially for the vocals. And one thing that Houndmouth is famous for is their amazing harmonizing. This group has heavy influences from groups such as The Band, Grateful Dead and Little Feat. Yea, that good. This is a must-see show. They will be performing in large venues for much higher prices soon. I purchased their newest CD, and can't stop playing it. But the live performance had a high energy level which can't be matched in a studio. Hint: How about a concert DVD?

Houndmouth is an amazing live band. They bring the joy and excitement of a local band playing in a bar with their friends while also being four of the most talented young musicians working today. The setlist was amazing, the crowd interaction could only be rivaled by Deer Tick, and the opening act (Twin Limb) was a fantastic surprise. If you blink, you could easily miss the small word "Royale" on the green awning outside of the venue, but when you walk in, you ascend a decadent staircase that gives the impression of a large victorian theater. The performance space is reminiscent of the House of Blues on a smaller scale. There a multiple bars and places to sit. Don't miss Houndmouth and don't miss a show at Royale if you like the performer.

I went to this show as a last minute decision, driving from CT to see my new favorite band, The Ballroom Thieves. I had never been to this venue, but liked it. The room was open and I was able to enjoy the show even from the back by the bar. I was sad I couldn't go upstairs but the bottom floor was not full enough with attendees to really warrant that level to be open. We arrived late and did not see the opening band perform. Standing only two-three rows back from the stage during The Ballroom Thieves, I had a great time. As always, the Thieves were fun to watch and got me dancing. They played a couple new songs that I can't wait to be released. I stayed for most of Houndmouth. I thought the keys player had a unique voice and I wished they used her a bit more. Good set - enjoyable americana type music.

I first heard about Houndmouth when they were opening for White Denim at Brooklyn Bowl in the summer of 2013. They were one of the best opening bands I'd seen since...well, since I discovered White Denim opening for Wilco in February the year prior. (The lesson here is that if you love a band, you're likely to love the band they selected to tour with them, too. Don't go late and take the opportunity to discover new music!) I caught the first of two sold out shows at Mercury Lounge with the Wheeler Brothers opening for them. The place was packed and energy was high...this was obviously a concert for people who knew the band well and were ready for an evening of good music. Houndmouth didn't disappoint and it was evident from the moment they took the stage that they were happy to be there. The band has amazing chemistry and you can easily sense the genuineness of their friendship and mutual respect of musicianship onstage. They covered all the hits on From the Hills Below the City and threw in some new tunes, which was the only time the audience wasn't singing along. I love the versatility in this band and that there isn't just one lead singer - they pass the lead off throughout the set, which is appreciated because they all have drastically different yet equally impressive sounds. Long story short, try not to miss a Houndmouth show. Ever.
