Dave Mason

Dave Mason

David Mason is an English musician, singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Worcester, who first found fame with the rock band Traffic. In his long career, Mason has played and recorded with many of the era's most notable musicians including Jimi Hendrix, Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, George Harrison and Mama Cass Elliot. Mason's best known song is "Feelin' Alright" recorded by Traffic in 1968 and covered by dozens of artists, including Joe Cocker, who had a major hit with the song in 1969. For Traffic, he also wrote "Hole in My Shoe" a kind of psychedelic satire that became a classic in its own right.

Dave Mason is an excellent performer. He played renditions of earlier material that were a real treat to enjoy live. The rescheduled show we saw ended rather abruptly with no encore. Otherwise 5 stars. Maybe he wasn't fully recovered from the flu yet. The Uptown in Napa is easily one of the best venues anywhere in the Bay Area to see a show. Great sound, friendly staff and beautiful theater. See ANYTHING there and you'll be impressed. They were oddly restrictive on photo taking this time - not sure why. Matt

First set of Traffic songs was great. Much better than I expected as he gave each song his own unique version. Second set of solo songs included 2 'goose bump' moments: 'Only You Know And I Know', and 'Shouldn't Have Took More Than You Gave', but I knew every song he played and they all rocked. Still sounds great fore 69 years old (compared to Mick J. or Daltrey).

We loved this show. It was a combination of wonderful old Traffic favorites, wonderful old Dave solo stuff, and wonderful new music. Expertly performed by Dave and the three band members. These guys have still got it, and I'm so glad we made the 2 hour drive to be there. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Dave Mason still has it. Extremely tight band, playing a great line up of classic and newer songs. Seen him last year and we were so impressed we wanted to see him again. We were not disappointed. First set some great old Traffic tunes, second set classic Mason tunes. Over 2 hours of great music. One of the best shows I have seen in years.

As always, Mason was the consummate professional. Clearly a Dave Mason crowd, so they appreciated the Traffic session, as well as Mason's lengthy chats with the crowd between the songs. He purposely played the music 'close to what's on the album', as he said, to the applause of those attending. His second session, which he called his 'Dave' session, covered all the greats, including his early DM releases. Very good show, his voice was great, his band very good, appreciated by his fans.

Dave is one of my favorites from way back. I loved Traffic but Steve Winwood sang many of their songs but Dave did the ones he wrote and sang just like it was yesterday. He was funny and his voice was consistent with the past. I really loved his solo career in the last 70's and 80's and he didn't disappoint me at all. I think he played just about everything I wanted to hear. He also did some good story telling in between songs about other people he played with, songs he wrote and how they all got started. Other than his sweating like a pig ( I almost felt bad for him) the show couldn't have been any better. A must see.

This concert could have been great but instead, I walked out before the encore. Dave butchered Low Spark right out of the gate and played too many songs off his new album. The mix was poor, hearing the occasional sixty cycle hum never helps, and the drummer must have thought he was playing Shea Stadium it was so Proud for the small theater. I get the fact that Dave has been playing the same songs for decades and wants to tweak them, but I came to hear the original sound not some new rendition(s). Dave had to tune his guitar on stage, just illustrating to me that he just was not ready to rock the place. I left so I did not have to hear this band step-on any more of my favorite memories. I will say, the rest of the audience was into it though.

I like Dave Mason and I had seen him live prior to seeing his horrible attempt at covering Traffic songs which were originally sung by Stevie Winwood. Dave Mason's rendition of Low Spark of High Heeled Boys was unbearably bad. Dave Mason can still sing his own songs well, but he has zero business singing songs that he butchers, let alone from a band that he was not in for very long (was it one or two albums?). That would be like Pete Best playing the Beatles music, just because he was in the band originally. If Dave Mason had at least done a credible job of singing and if the band had done a decent job of playing the music of Traffic, I would likely have enjoyed it. Instead, I sat in my seat thinking, "If they don't do a good song soon, I'm leaving." I will NEVER pay to see Dave Mason live again. I saw Traffic live and I'm going to see Winwood live (again) soon. If I wanted to see a cover band perform the songs of Traffic, I would at least want to see one which paid tribute to the band, not someone such as Mason who is simply making money off his one time association with the band. Worst act I've seen in many many years!! AVOID THIS ACT!

Dave is one of my all time favorite song writers and his show at the Uptown Theater In Napa didn't disappoint. The show was titled an evening with Dave Mason and although I had heard about the upcoming "Traffic Jam" shows I really didn't expect to see much of that. At the start of the show he played a few of his Alone Together hits and it was fantastic. Then he informed us that we would be the guinea pigs for some songs he was trying to remember. WOW They did Low Spark of High Heel Boys, Rock n Roll Stew, 40 Thousand Headsmen and about 6 more Traffic hits. The four piece band was spot on, the guitarist was amazing. Dave was in top form and the show went on for over two hours. I'd go see him again tonight if he was playing again. You folks on the East Coast are in for a treat. Go see the Traffic Jam shows.. He also did a song that Jim Capaldi wrote just before he died. He talked a lot about his history with the band and had exchanges with the audience in this small venue setting. Best show I've seen in quite awhile.

This concert is for Dave Mason fans who mistakenly think he needs a band to produce a spectacular concert. Even though I have seen him in concert many times over the past 15 years, I am more than impressed with his ability to mesmerize a packed house with just his voice, guitar, and blatant natural talent. We are familiar with other rock legends whose voices have faded over the years. That certainly is not the case here. I am looking forward to many more years of first class rock from this Hall of Famer!

He has plenty of good songs and i am happy to see he has a band backing him up. I saw him in detroit and it was a two man guitar show. he even had a comic opening for him. Lets hope the band helps. Always great to see someone of this caliber perform and then to have great band members as part of the show. Unfortunately the floor of the ground floor is flat so it can hamper sight lines so if you are short that can be an issue if you happen to be behind a tall person. The small size of venue makes for an intimate setting to see a show like this

Dave Mason was outstanding at Harrah's in South Lake Tahoe Sun Oct 1. I told my sister and brother in law that if the concert sucks, we don't have to stay as I'd seen a couple of older (70+) rockers who were not good. Well, I guess you could say I undersold the show. Mason and his three-piece backing band were fantastic. Mason was great on lead guitar and the other guitar player, keyboards and drummer were also great. Often the older guys are still good on their instruments, but the vocals are gone but Mason was still hitting all the notes and we didn't hear a rough note all evening. All the old Traffic songs were perfect along with the Dave Mason solo stuff. I highly recommend this concert to anyone who liked Mason and/or Traffic back in the day.

Dave Mason has always been one of my favorite artist. At 71 he still has what I think is one the best if not the best voices in rock'n roll! From his days with Traffic to his solo career his musicianship is always top notch. This was his "Alone Together Again" tour doing tunes from his first solo album but he mixed in other songs from traffic. The use of videos was a great stroll down memory lane from when these tunes came out. He has a great band backing him up as always. This is probably the 5th time I've seen at this venue which is great because it's small and intimate.

Dave Mason was one of my favorite artists of the '70's. When I saw that he would be playing close to me I jumped at the chance to see him for the first time. In one word it was GREAT! He can still play and sing as if it was 1975! His voice was tremendous, sounding youthful and energetic. He played the whole "Alone Together" album along with other great songs such as "Along the Watchtower". "Dear Mister Fantasy", and Feelin' Alright". Dave was supposed to perform on Sunday, Sept. 17. He was sick (throat issues) and the show was rescheduled for Sept. 21. He was obviously not at the top of his game. About halfway through he was having difficulty with his voice. His guitar playing was stellar as always. He couldn't do an encore so we didn't get to hear all Along The Watchtower, his go to encore. Would have been better for everyone if he'd taken a little more time to recover.

Dave recovered from a flu bug which canceled this show last Sunday. However he came back strong Thursday night. I paid $90 for 4th row. Dave's voice was amazing but unfortunately he was sweating so bad I don't believe he had completely healed from bronchitis. They had to postpone for 4 days. Most of us were in our 50/60's. I did expect him to play "All along the watchtower" which he didn't. We wanted to hear his old stuff. He played exactly an hr and half with no encore. The crowd stood waiting until they kicked us out! Very disappointing show. I go to many live concerts there and never seen a show with No encore. At 71 Dave Mason still puts on a great show. His singing and guitar playing are still top notch. Maybe more important he is positive, upbeat and has a wonderful sense of humor. On this tour he did his first Album "Alone Together" in its entirety. Rather than do it in order, he sprinkled the songs thru out the show which worked out better. If you havent seen Dave Mason, I would highly recommend seeing him. The only negative note is that there was a really lame opening act that no one expected because it was not advertised. Many Concert performers do that, I dont know why, maybe they want you to get there early. Personally we would have not rushed thru dinner to get there at 8 expecting Dave to start then if we had know there was an opening act.

Dave Mason says it best, "Rock and Roll is not an age, it's an Attitude!" Dave and his band are all very talented musicians, with a serious passion for playing music. They perform together like a well oiled machine, and have a great spontaneous rapport with the audience. The set list included lots of old favorites like "Mr Fantasy" and "Feeling Alright" ~ plus some new stuff like "Good 2 U" - an instant favorite from Dave's latest album. Hard Rock Live, Biloxi - is a great venue with an excellent sound system. On a personal note, I enjoy the smaller venues for concerts. Besides the intimate appeal, the audience has easy access to refreshments, and the space allows for a fairly quick exit - that flows into another great party atmosphere. After the show, Dave Mason took time to meet and greet fans, and sign autographs. On this tour Dave Mason brings with him; Johnne Sambataro, Gerald Johnson, Chris Curtis, Alvino Bennett, Tony Patler. BOTTOM LINE: Dave Mason is on my Top Ten list of ~ All Time Best Concerts Ever! When you attend a Dave Mason concert, you feel like you are at one big party ~ with really GREAT music!

Went to see and hear Steve Cropper. He is fabulous! For 55 years I have admired his ability to be "behind" the vocals, the horns and fill it all out without attracting attention to himself. An ever so intregral part of the band. Green Onions is a fun instrumental where he stands our/shines but Cropper's licks that support, articuate, complete vocals and horn riffs are absolutely without compare! Listen closely - he's there - right behind the other 5 performers in this fabulous show making them the best they can be. A true artist and showman. Mason is great in his own right but be sure to pay attention to the man from Memphis.

I have seen hundreds of concerts! If I'm not the worlds biggest rock n roll groupie I don't know who is? Jimi Hendricks to The Flaming Lips. But Dave Mason who I've seen four times since the 70's has never disappointed me. Somebody like myself tends to get a little fickle. So when I walk out of a RocknRoll show with warm fuzzy feeling after all the music I have experience....Well Thank you DAVE! P.S. Thank you for signing my walking stick.

Wow- it was a great show- the band was amazing and Dave was so good. He still has a great voice and his guitar playing is just fantastic- they had a woman that sang with him, Gretchen, that was above the top with a voice that was just absolutely perfect- I would go to a concert to just see her. Great time, great venue.

Dave Mason was incredible. His guitar work as well as his voice were great. His band and the female singer who accompanied him were first-rate. The intimate nature of the venue was perfect as he bonded with the audience. It was an unforgettable evening!

My wife and I went to see Dave at The Cave in Big Bear. It was amazing! His guitar skills are top-rate and his choice of songs and reinterpretations of his classics ("Low Spark...", "Dear Mr. Fantasy") made the event even better! His guitar work was stunning and song choices were perfect. In addition to Mr. Mason's skills, his backing band was amazing and the addition of Gretchen Rhodes' incredible voice made it a 5 star concert! Had a great time, with an enthusiastic crowd! Well done Dave Mason!

Even after all these years, Dave Mason sounded spectacular! He still has a great voice and can seriously play some licks on the guitar! In fact, he had many guitars he switched out during his performance. If you go to see this show, you will not be disappointed. He covers a range of songs in his career from Traffic classics to the newer songs on his EP. If you want to have a rockin time, bring back some of those 70's memories, and hear some great music this iis a must see show!

I was fortunate enough to be able to take my son and his girlfriend to see and meet Dave Mason at the Birchmere this past week. Folks... Dave is music royalty, has always had a great voice, has some amazing stories, has written some of the soundtrack of our lives and should be celebrated and heard if you can. He's got some top notch talent supporting him and the recent addition of a female voice to the band was a nice addition. Go see him if you can... and I always love going to the Birchmere. So nice to have a meal and see some quality music.

Dave Mason, an original member of Traffic, has done amazing things with his career. If you remember the music, you will enjoy the performance.

Richie opened the show with a good selection of songs. His backup band was good and vocals were right on. Richie's microphone level was too low. Richie has a nice stage presence. Dave Mason was great! Hearing so many favorite songs was amazing. He has good audience interaction as well. He's a true professional and so were his backup band members. They were all quite excellent! From the beginning, Dave's microphone level was also too low and his mic was placed too low and he had to bend over to use it effectively. What was even worse was the sound quality of the vocal mics. TINNY, RASPY, AWFUL and I'm being kind. Many shout-outs from audience members to "fix the sound" and ignored by the sound techs. I would have fired them all. Don't they listen to what is playing? Kind of spoiled what could have been a fantastic evening. Also, selecting a nickname on this review is insane, as most names are taken. Idiotic.

I wasn t sure what to expect, especially after watching Richard Furay s opening set, which wasn t especially good. He bragged about using rented instruments, which he and his band were constantly turning. Not a tight set, despite the fact that the audience knew and liked the songs... Buffalo Springfield and Poco. I longed for listening to the original recordings. Dave Mason was a different and much, much better story. Band was tight and excellent. All the old songs were great. The new ones, too. He s a very personable performer, and funny. Go and see his shows...does an outstanding job.

The concert was fantastic! Dave played a whole set of great songs. All the musicians in his band did a fantastic job. It was a good mix of Traffic, blind faith and Dave Mason songs. I did wish to hear some songs from side one of my Headkeeper album, which didn t happen. Maybe next time it will. The concert brought me back to age 17 when I listened to Dave Masons Headkeeper album for months. The only improvement would be if the concert wasn t quite as loud as it was. We were sitting on the front right side, where it was extremely loud. I also thought it was very nice, that Dave said, he would come out after the show and sign autographs or whatever. I couldn t stand in line and wait due to having sore feet. I sure would have liked to get a photo with Dave.

Master guitarist but did very few of his hit songs in the show. Band did a good job with songs from other artists but we wanted to hear Dave's songs. Only did three or four we recognized from his albums. He still has a good voice and interacts well with the audience.

Over time, the music still has the soulful rock as when you first heard it, but now, its grown even better with the personal input, less "production" ... and more Dave!!! He's so unique, a talent so special! I'd go again to see Dave every day if I could!

Despite battling a cold, Dave Mason and his excellent band put on a memorable show that featured the landmark 1970 album "Alone Together" played in it's entirety plus an array of Traffic and Dave's solo works. Once his voice warmed up partway through thi first song, it was vintage, classic and special. The guitar work should not be missed. Lots to be learned from Dave by the current generation. The evening was finished perfectly with "All Along the Watchtower" (Dave played on the Hendrix recording). Go, see him. Thanks for reading.

David Mason is one of the originals, straight out of the sixties with Traffic and then his classic album "Alone Together". Dave's band, with drums, guitar and keys is just fantastic. The Dave Mason Band never disappoints, true professionals laying it all out there.

Bought the tickets to this show as a birthday present to myself. First time at the Scottish Rite Auditorium in Collingswood, NJ. The site lines were terrific, the seats left a lot to be desired if you were over 5 feet tall, this is my only quibble. The sound was great. Mason & his band did a phenomenal job playing the Alone Together songs, then later mixing in some other tunes.
