Expecting an uplifting and inspiring story, I was left feeling greater despair as each event unfolded. Sound was poor. Muffled voices with terribly loud music. I am an educator and have a good understanding of autism

My daughter, who is 14, and I went to the show for our date night and were extremely disappointed with the show, so much so that we left at intermission. When you first walk in and see the stage, a fake dog is in the middle of the stage with a pitchfork-type tool sticking out of the dog, which was an immediate turn-off for us as we are dog owners. The first few words of the play were F-bombs, which was hardly appropriate for even me. The play then moved into very mature subject matter with adultery, lies and just at times what seemed to be a jumble bit of action on-stage. We did not read the book that the play was based on and instead relied on the fact that this was a Tony-award-winning play. This play is for adults and not something to take kids or young adults to. We saw several people leave even before the intermission and did not hesitate to leave ourselves. I just hate that I wasted almost $200 to see an awful play (there was no orchestra or any other redeeming qualities about the play itself, but the Paramount is always a beautiful place to be).

The stage production followed the book quite well. The technical elements were great and helped make each scene believable. Although the subject matter was quite serious, there was well placed humor. Well acted and enjoyable. I would see this production again.

Our son is on the autism spectrum and is severely affected. We read the book when it came out and were very moved. Like most people, we could not see how this story could be adapted to the stage. They not only adapted the story without significant modification, they have represented the unfamiliar workings of Christopher's mind as well as his behaviors and the interactions with his parents and the community in an absolutely authentic way. The story keeps the perspective of the affected teenager while exposing the difficulty of his parents and larger community in coping with him. The design and staging eliminate the familiar structure of our world and present the events as they might appear in his. This is a finely crafted theatrical gem.

I am sure this play would be much more relevant if autism was something we had to deal with - thank goodness our kids and friends do not have this. While we could feel very empathetic for the parents and Christopher, the loud almost constant vibe in this was at the least disconcerting. Also I felt the story was not that interesting and the characters not fleshed out enough. I'm sure the Tony awards are well deserved, but I did not enjoy.

Excellent acting. The performers were really "in to" their parts. The lighting and sound were fantastic and an equal part to the actors to deliver the overall performance. It is obvious the lead actor has put A LOT of effort into learning the mannerism of the autistic child he played. It was stunning. The lighting and sound did a great job of creating for the audience the confusion and overload often felt by autistic children.

Beautiful set. Christopher was fantastic but much of the rest of the cast were not up to the standards I have come to expect at the Orpheum. I did finally see where they were doing the closed captioning which helped understand what the narrator character was saying.

I saw The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time on Bway and I immediately began telling everyone I know that it is not to be missed. It is a phenomenal show! I loved everything about it - - especially the movement and choreography. AMAZING! I've seen hundreds and hundreds of plays all over the country and would rate this in one of my top 10! Stop everything you are doing and get tickets right now!

the acting and writing was amazing. I'm giving this a less than stellar review due to the newspaper article which did not describe what the play would be like accurately at all. I, personally, would not have bought tickets if I had known what the play would be nor would I have brought my grandson. there were quite a few really little kids in the audience who would probably not have been there either had there been an accurate description. the TV promo's were also very misleading.

I cannot recommend this show enough. It is an exceptional play that is brilliantly acted by a very talented cast. You do not need to be familiar with the book to enjoy this. It is not a show for younger children, however, I would recommend this for mature middle schoolers on up. Whatever you do, do not leave for your cars when the show ends. Stay in your seat for the best is yet to be!!

I was not familiar with the plot beforehand, so it was all new to me. I was surprised at how intense it was, in terms of the storylines covered. The protrayal of the main character, who seemed to be autistic, was refreshing and very interesting to see. The electronic effects were used superbly. The second half was more entertaining.

An overwrought production with an almost interesting plot, this really fell flat. The original mystery, and additional mysteries, are solved in the first act. The second act was slow, repetitive, and not nearly as interesting as the first act. The stagecraft was very novel, and its a talented crew. Simply not compelling or engaging as most other productions.

What an incredible play. I was moved by all the performances, however the lead was brilliant. I learned so much and left feeling as if I had a spiritual experience. The set and movement and sound helped to understand what was in this young man's mind. A mind blowing theatrical experience. Everyone working in mental health or a school should see this play. Thank you for a unique and enjoyable evening.

I was surprised how they actually made the very complicated book come to life. The internal voices, the perceptions of the people and activities from the main character. It all translated in a way I have never seen on stage before. Very innovative. Touching and well done.

I understand that they were trying to make a point of the frustration of parents of autistic or Asperger's children, but it was overdone in this play in two ways. One, they had much to much shouting and screaming. Understandably to make a point for the main character with Asperger's, but the father too! The second overdo, was the length of tine they spent showing his confusion and overstimulation in the world as in the subway scene. OK, we get it, but to continue for at least 10 minutes of this even bombarded my own senses in the audience. Both my 28 year old daughter and her husband as well as my own husband wanted to leave at the intermission. We stuck it out. It delivered a powerful message, but too stongly.

This is an engaging story about an autistic teen (Christopher) who excels at math. His playing detective to uncover the killer of a neighbors dog, leads to his discovering dark family secrets and that a mother who he thought was dead, is alive. We get a look at how his mind is interpreting it's sensory input as he travels alone in search of his mother. Through light, sound and images the audience is bombarded with sensory overload, just as Christopher's mind is. The play is not a musical--just in case you are wondering. It tells the story with clear dialog punctuated with graphics, light and sound. It's a great play to take teens to! Finally the actors performances are convincing and compelling.

This show was absolutely amazing! The stage and set dressing was very techy and cool. The story line was intense and heart wrenching. As the mother of an autistic son, I identified closely with several scenes and teared up a couple of times. The actor portraying Christopher (Adam) was spot on. His portrayal of someone with autism was very realistic and respectful. I read the book and loved the production too.

Adam Langdon was incredible as the lead. I don't know how someone can keep doing that role. His performance was riveting. I think that he has a great future in front of him. The whole cast did a great job. I also enjoyed the staging as it was so creative. My first impression of the set was "boring" but how they used it was ingenious. And I loved the train and how Adam set it up. This was one of those shows where you walked out saying that you can hardly wait to see it again.

I really didn't know what to expect. I hadn't read the book, but I heard that this was a very special play. It was! It all takes place within the mind of an autistic teenager who attempts to solve the mystery of who killed his neighbor's dog. He finds much more about himself and his family. I can only comment on the existing production, of course. This is a sparse, yet high-tech and brilliantly told piece of theater about an autistic boy who is mathematically talented. The show is funny, entertaining, challenging, and a bit disturbing. The entire cast is beautifully committed to telling the story, and the technical aspects of the production are very creative, visually striking, and at the level you only get at this level of professional theater. I saw the main lead in the cast. It's a physically challenging role and he was up to it, and again, very committed to the role (no walking through it here). I had read that while this actor is excellent in the role, the original lead on Broadway may have made you feel a bit more of the hurting underneath, so portraying a hair more emotional depth to the character. I could see that there's a bit that more could be mined there. But this actor was still strong. One tip for selecting seats. This is a show that, in spite of the occasional "wow" visuals, is intimate and would be best seen as close as you can get. Getting balcony seats will water down the emotional effect of the play. The closer you are, the more immersed you will be.

I saw this show four years ago in London, and vowed that if it ever made its way to the United States, I would try to see it again. It was unlike any show I had ever seen before, and completely changed the way I look at theatre and storytelling. I had never seen a play where you are seeing the world through one character's eyes usually that's more of something you see in film, but for this story, live theatre is the best way to tell it. Every element of the production works together to help the audience see the world through the eyes of Christopher, a fifteen-year-old math genius who has autism. We share in his confusion, frustration, terror, and also his joy in things most of the rest of the world wouldn't pay much attention to. Adam Langdon's interpretation of Christopher was very different from Luke Treadaway's from the original London cast as much as I admired Treadaway's performance, I was glad Langdon decided not to try and copy him. His take on the role actually reminded me in many ways of a close friend of mine who has autism. The rest of the cast also did a wonderful job of making their characters realistic and sympathetic despite their flaws. Sadly, the show has finished its Boston run, but if it ever comes back, or you have the chance to see it elsewhere, go!

I came to this play with my daughter in law and niece, both of whom work in Special Education. We all had read the book but all of us felt this production was even better than the book due to the visual displays done electronically that showed the inside of head of a person with sensory sensitivity and capturing the train trip on the Underground train system. All of the performers were terrific and the actor who played role of Christopher was amazing for his physical and expressive mannerisms. There was a long standing ovation at the end. I very much recommend this play.

Everything about this production was remarkable, the adaptation from the book, the acting, the production design. I have already recommended it to everyone I know. It is best viewed from orchestra or mezzanine seats. Although the visual effects are certainly viewable from everywhere, there is a certain intimacy in being close to the actors for this particular production. If you have to buy balcony seats, though, still go. Don't miss this one.

We could not hear the dialog which made for a disappointing experience the father characters voice and the narrators voice was garbled . The young boys voice carried well. We were sitting relatively close in the first mezzanine tie F seats 3 &4. My 6'2" husbands legs were cramping up too as the seats are so close. Will look for an isle seat for him next time. Anyway we left at intermission and did not come back. Also for such a beautiful theater was noticing all the duct tape on the carpet. Way past time to recarpet!!!

The performances were excellent. The stage and set were also great. Unfortunately I think the Paramount is not the venue the show was designed for-- it was probably meant for a black box or smaller venue in general as the set was small and the props small as well. It was tough to hear the actors, though we were on the first mezzanine, so only halfway to the back of the theatre. I'd also say that the script could have been cut down a bit to make it more concise. There were long moments of monologue that took away from the power of their sentiment because they dragged on a bit. Overall, very well done but the venue really took away from the show.

This play was absolutely incredible, the actors portrayed a strong knowledge of what the characters would feel and how they might act. If you want true immersion in a play, looking further! Walking in, the set appears to be a simple box with a digital feel to it, and the props are mostly boxes, but the crew knew exactly what they could do with it and how to make the most of their minimalistic set.

The late seating policy (which I now understand is determined by the producer of the show, not the house) does the performers and the audience a great disservice. First, the show started while members of the audience were visiting in the auditorium. They had not taken their seats when the action began. 15 minutes into The Curious Incident, a large group of latecomers were seated en masse, during a quiet moment of the show. I have seen a lot of theater, and never experienced anything quite so antithetical to traditional theater etiquette. I was dreaming of one of those amazing Broadway ushers who would shut that stuff down. If you are familiar with this show, you know it relies heavily on lights and sound to create a unique world. Ushers' flashlights broke this mood. This negative effect was compounded by the large number of latecomers making people move so they could sit. Furthermore, several patrons seemed to come and go as they pleased throughout the performance. Very distracting and disruptive. I was so disappointed as I had heard amazing things from friend who had seen the show on Broadway. Due to these externalities, I was unable to fully engage with the performance.

Before going to the show I had read an article in the Phoenix paper about the production. It prepared me for the premise of the show - otherwise I might have been a bit confused as some patrons were. The acting, stage presentation were absolutely mesmerizing. I also recommend using the RF listening experience with your noise canceling headphones at the Gammage. There's 2 hours and 40 minutes of my life I'll never get back. I could barely stay awake during the first act. The scene on the train was so long when the first act was over I thought the show was over. If I hadn't gone with someone else I would have left. The premise was promising. The execution, not so much. Except for the lead I felt like the actors were acting. Meaning they didn't draw me in where the play moved me at all. It was like watching a school play performed by grown ups.

The Show Was Excellent !! (get or bring headphones) Be aware that the "Incidents" are performed inside an elaborate cube. Therefore, the view from seats on the theatre sides may keep you from seeing one of the interior sides of the cube. I was in upper balcony seat # 26 & part of the staging was not visible. We missed it in London a few years ago but had to see Jacques Brel is alive & well. I am not a fan of the Gammage, so this is very high praise. Also, I only paid $24.50 for a upper balcony seat so I did not MIND THE VIEW. Cheers JJ

Couldn't connect w any of the characters, lead miscast, father's body language didn't reflect apparent behavior, staging too sparse. Surprise ending? I don't think so. All in all, have no idea what the hype was all about.

Great production with a fabulous set and fantastic lighting. The play is good giving the audience a sense of what it is like to live as an austistic person. Not my favorite play ever but definitely worth seeing.

Curious Incident is interesting and the actors are supremely talented. I like that it is different from anything I have seen, but that is also what makes is challenging. The story lags in the second act and the extremely loud noises and flashing lights create a sensory overload. I understand this is what the play wants, but it's a lot to take. If you love seeing plays and musicals, check this out for something different. Otherwise, I'd pick something else.

The show's producers took what wouldn't appear to be a story you could put on a stage and did that very thing! The innovative set was genius and placed the audience in the main character's head - whether you wanted to be there or not.

An ingenious way to walk in a child's shoes that is on the spectrum. The technology duplicated what the senses may react to....the bright lights, increased noise...every teacher should see this play. Well done and moving. The ending was realistic, too.

This was perhaps a story best read than presented as a play. The single set, although creative at times brought very little variation to the visual experience.

I loved the show. The characters were well thought out and believable. You will live how the show flows, with the choreography. I also lived the set design and how it played a part in the show. Be warned that they use strobe lighting in the show, my girls get migraines, but the lighting didn't bother them. This is a show I highly tecommend seeing.

Interesting concept. Read the book which probably helps follow the program. Lead actor was very good as was the entire cast. Props made minimal staging visually come to life. We enjoyed it as a change of pace from musicals.

What an incredible event! The play closely followed the book and Christopher was outstanding.

Liked this very much but did not love it. The book is better. While I understand the use of the techno to give us a sense of Christopher's inner life it was too much for me and it didn't give me the insight it was aiming for. A simpler approach may have been better. Actors were great just not thrilled with the staging.

So well done. It kept my attention completely. Brilliantly acted and the stage was so very clever. Much happens on the floor as well as on the walls in this play so it helps if one has a clear view of the floor of the stage. If you loved the book, you will surely love this play.

Loyal to the book by the same title, this stage performance brought all of the characters to life, portraying their challenges, flaws, and complexities realistically, empathetically, and with humor. The stage set also was great; the floor and walls initially resembled graph paper but actually contained LED lights that lit up to depict scenes ranging from houses to the London Tube. I would see this show again; it was amazing! Given the prolonged standing ovation the cast received at the performance I attended, my guess is that others felt similarly.

Beginning with the non-traditional stage to the minimalist set, the sound and graphic effects that added so much to the scene's mood, the outstanding acting by the lead character (gymnast? and actor), the athletic and frenetic movement by the actors (you'll know what I mean when you see the play), and the unexpected plot twists, it all somehow works to make me deeply care about this young man as he tries to overcome family and emotional problems and somehow make it work for him and for me in the audience. The last line in the play satisfyingly provided both closure and left an open end. In short, everything about this play was terrific!

The story is excellent. I believe the representation of autism gives the audience an idea of what it must be like to have autism. The acting was adequate. Nothing amazing. The set is quite innovative. I was disappointed as it wasn't quite the same as the broadway version. Some of the more interesting set features weren't in the traveling show version. They were the more spectacular things in the set so it was a shame they weren't including in the traveling version.

There was a little excitement in the beginning of the second half...but my partner had already fled the scene... Acting was ok, just too much talk/whine.

Wonderfully and imaginatively acted, well-paced, almost acrobatic at times, and a great story (though for someone who hadn't read the book first, it would probably be confusing). But if are hearing-sensitive, beware--loud music and sound-effects, almost painful at times.

The lead was amazing, the special effects really added a extra layer of insight rather than being a distraction, the adaptation was true to the novel.

An amazing story, especially because you think it will about the incident that happened to the dog, but it focuses on the protagonist. The actor who played Christopher did a tremendous job portraying a child with autism on the higher end of the spectrum, what goes through his mind, and how he succeeds in overcoming his obstacles. The cast, stage, and environment gives you an idea that many of us can not relate with especially the story of how parents need to remain strong and understanding to provide the best supports and love.

Having listened to this book 4 times, I found the play to be a poor representation. Very disjointed and impossible to follow. This is one of my favorite books, but the play fell far short of my expectations.

Great staging. Great acting. Great production of a book that, to me, would be tough to stage. But you did it justice.

This was an amazing play-both for the content and performance. I wasn't sure what to expect, but there was such a "wow" factor that lasted with me for days. The spoken words-content was powerful providing a perspective that I didn't expect. The delivery by the actors, particularly the main character was beyond amazing. I highly recommend attending this play/performance. You will not be disappointed!

I would never have thought this book could be so well presented as a play. Original, clever, mind expanding and compassionate. This production added to my understanding of what it must be like to experience life as a person on the autistic spectrum.
