The Subdudes

The Subdudes never disappoint. From my first time seeing them almost 25 years ago until last weekend, timeless! Tommy Malone is my favorite live singer...PERIOD! His vocals sometimes get overlooked by his unbelievable guitar abilities but his voice is as recognizable as some of the all time greats. Go see them before you miss the chance.

So having seen this show last Thursday night I can only recommend that you RUN, not walk, RUN to get tickets if they come to your town as the original members of the band. I have been waiting for this since they broke up in 1996. Since the rebirth of the dudes and then subsequently the subdudes they have lacked the energy and enthusiasm that I saw on Thursday night. The crowd was so energized by their obvious enjoyment on stage and it will be hard for me to believe that they aren't reenergized enough to regroup and record together again. Since Johnny Ray left the band, the music has become kitchy and less soulful often focusing on everything except for the band's strongest attribute, Tommy Malone's voice. The only song that I recall them playing that was older than 1996 on Thursday night was Papa Dukie and the Mud People. Show was truly amazing and I hope that the crowd's reaction to their reunion will continue during this Summer tour and they will see that they have no choice but make this reunion a permanent one.

With a smaller crowd, the Subdudes played a casual fun set that sounded real good. At the end, they came out into the center of the venue and with the crowd surrounding them, ended the night with Known To Touch Me and Sabita that were amazing.

Original stuff and they engage with the audience for the entire show. Harmonies are awesome,they use instruments in unique ways. Cannot really describe them, they cannot be put into a box because they are true artists!

I've loved the Subdudes for years -but even people who don't know the band will have a good time. The Subdudes play music that makes you feel good - a mix of rock, blues, and zydeco that is nostalgic and happy. A little wistful at times. I highly recommend.

Great songs, funny repartee with the audience, great jam-band solos, beautiful harmonies - the evening flew by all too fast. Totally enjoyable from the first note to the last.

I am a Subdudes fan from way back. That said, while some shows are a little better, edgier, tighter than others, these guys don't vary much from great. The show at BB King's last Saturday night, June 20, was wonderful. Their harmonies were spot on and their playing was infallible. They top it all off by coming into the audience up by the bar and doing a few acoustic numbers right in the middle of the crowd, who is singing along with abandon. This is one of my favorite nights of the year, when the Subdudes hit the Apple, but this particular night was a standout.

Always a pleasure to see/hear these guys. A few new #'s then hit after hit...... most under rated singers songwriters ...

The Subdudes were awesome at Saturday night's performance at HOB Dallas. This is the 3rd time we have seen them live, and they blew us away once again. While they are not well known by the masses, even a person who has never heard of them would thoroughly enjoy a Subdudes concert and would walk away a new fan. I sincerely hope HOB Dallas continues to bring them back to perform because I will attend every concert. One of my favorite concerts ever.

I'm a big Subdudes fan, however I like them at a smaller venue.

This was an incredible performance! Sang and danced along with others in crowd. Not only did they play my favorite songs they played with humor and energy on such a cold night! Just love their rhythm and songwriting skills! Great voices too. Loved the encore when they came into audience and circled into a group and harmonized. Just the best!

excellent concert in an excellent venue - the birchmere always delivers the right environment for performers to deliver their best!

My husband and I love the Subdudes because of their incredible voices and harmonizing. However, due to the atrocious engineering, the sound emanating from the stage was over modulated, strident and poorly mixed. What should have been an enjoyable experience of listening to one of our favorite groups, turned into an excruciatingly loud and almost painful one. We have been to the Birchmere before and this is the first time that poor engineering ruined the entire evening.

The Birchmere is perfect for the Subdudes. The crowd was involved from the start and the band was top notch. See them live if you can!!

I've been a rabid fan since the late 80's and I've seen these guys perform countless times in VA/CO/GA/LA. I was in attendance for their farewell tour at The Variety Playhouse in Atlanta and traveled to Tippitina's in New Orleans to catch their last performance on Nov 2, 1996! Tommy, John, Steve and Johnny Ray are technical wizards as musicians but it is their harmonies that seal the deal and they sing about things that actually matter like faith, hope, and LOVE! They did all original stuff from their 1st four albums starting with my favorites "One Time" and "Angel to Be". That couldn't have been better! Just wish I had been able to see them at The Ram's Den the next night in Annapolis. Anyone who doesn't recognize these guys a a premier ROCK and ROLL band, doesn't know squat about R & R in my humble opinion!!! You guys RULE!!!

It was a 17 yr hiatus 'til these guys got back together to perform as the original subdudes.What a superb evening of music! They're a needed breath of fresh air that sounds like no other...hats off for being one of a kind. The night passed quickly with a smoothe transition from song to song...with the exception of a stubborn accordian strap that caused no problem at sound check,but decided to malfunction at the start of the set. The band received several standing ovations during their set from the ever-knowledgable Birchmere crowd that filled the venue.This is a must-see show if you are fan.

Accept no substitutes! it was the Subdudes...in Chicago....need I say more. Great to see Johnny Ray Allen with the band again.

It's been too long since the original subdudes configuration has been performing together. They've written some of the best songs of the last 20 years and sound better than ever!! Get them back soon and regularly!!

I have seen the dudes countless times and this show was excellent. The band was very tight and quite festive with the Halloween theme!
