Misfits

There was no doubt that the Misfits had earned their status as punk rock icons when their latest release, Dead Alive – featuring live material taken from two back-to-back concerts the band gave at the Starland Ballroom in 2011 – was released in February 2013. The album came just as the punk pioneers kicked off their 2013 American tour, a spirited series of shows that brought their classic, horror-influenced punk-metal to a whole new generation of ticket buyers. Bassist and frontman, Jerry Only, is at peak form in a concert setting, belting out fans' latter-day favorites, revealing the music's thrashing metal influence to its fullest effect. Never straying from the band's hard-driving, melodic sensibilities, the setlist delivers amped-up power, and the audience can't help but get revved up right along with it.

I've been listening to the Misfits for more than 20 years since I was a teenager. I've seen half a dozen Danzig Legacy shows but seeing the real deal was well worth the wait. While it was a little strange to see the Misfits in an arena, the set list was incredible and the band put on a great show. I hope they have one more show in them over the next year or two because I'll gladly be back for one more round of the original Misfits.

Poor Danzig has lost his voice. Volume drowned out the amazing Doyle. Cool skull lights outside Forum. Musicality weak, but they still have enthusiasm and always entertaining.

Where do I start?! The outside terrace was great! Easy to get in and get around. The staff top notch nice! The sound was amazing! And of course the Misfits were amazing!! Danzig Barely had a speaking voice. But somehow able to sing great!! The crowd was singing. Jerry was feeling good and Doyle I think should have abig reptile tail!!! Good times

My niece Samantha, 16, and I had a great time at this all ages Misfits show. I'm 42 and never imagined this day ever happening when she was born. The House of Blues brought her and my generation together wonderfully without any safety concerns. The Misfits are a legendary punk band and unlike some punk rock acts from their time, they were very respectful to the mostly young audience. In fact, the bass player/singer, Jerry Only, autographed Samantha's shirt and ticket, spoke to us briefly and gave us a moment in our rock history we will never forget. We weren't the only lucky ones, he spent time with anyone willing to stay after the show to meet him. Thank you HOB, Jerry and the Misfits for an most memorable night of rock and roll !!!

It was a fantastic show. Before they came on, the Halloween theme song blasted throught the speakers. When the curtians opened, Jerry Only came on stage and shouted "Halloween!" and started the song. The crowd went crazy and pushed towards the front of the stage. I went wild, singing at the top of my lungs, which has led to me losing my voice. The stage looked like a graveyard, with a woman imaplied in the stomach by a stake in the corner. The fog machine wasn't chessy at all. It added to the alure of eeriness the band puts off. If The Misfits come back to Chicago, I will surely go to see them again.

Jerry Only and the gang played an awesome set rolling from one song to the next making sure the people in front never got a chance to lick their wounds. They played older songs from Static Age, Legacy of Brutality and Earth A.D. and newer songs from American Psycho and Famous Monsters. I was a little disappointed that they didn't play anything from Project 1950's but overall the set list was a solid mix of old and new. I didn't catch too much of the first act but they sounded pretty good and I might check them out in a local setting if I can find their name anywhere. The second act was Juicehead who brings punk back to it's political and social roots mohawk and all. I have seen these guys before and they never disappoint. My only disappointment with this show has to do with the venue. The sound system at the Chicago HOB did not sound like it was meant to be turned up that loud (the Misfit's amps only have off and 14 for volume) and sounded like half the speakers were blown. I have seen the Misfits in much smaller venues that sounded much better (and louder). Overall the 10pm curfew and sound system make the Chicago House of Blues not the best venue for the Misfits. I would like to see them return to the Vic when they come back as they sounded much better there but I will show up wherever they go because in the end I have never seen them put on a bad show.

I appreciate what Jerry is trying to do in keeping The Misfits alive, but this show was disappointing for a die hard fan like me. They had the guitar turned up so loud that the vocals were drowned out, but that didn't even matter. They got a lot of songs in, but only because they sped everything up to the point where you could barely understand what he was singing, which also wasn't that great. The stage looked amazing, though, and JuiceheaD was awesome, one of the best punk bands around right now. The HoB is always a great place to see a show, which is why I still recommend it.

Overall the Mistis August 9th show was great. I can't even remembe the name of the opening band and everything they played sounded the same---crap. One highlight of their performace was their last song was a Cramps' cover. Juicehead really took over the show playing an ubelievable set. Then the Misfits came out. The stage looked great, the guys looked ready to go,the only problem was the sound quality was horrible. I would still recommend this show however because the Misfits still have the energy and love for the music and I highly enjoyed Juicehead.

I've loved the Misfits since the early 80's and followed their line up changes regardless. It was very cool seeing them. The House of Blues is a great venue and has great sound. I just don't understand why they couldn't dial in the sound quality for the Misfits. I understand they are a punk group. The drums and guitars were awesome, they put out a wall of sound!! You couldn't hear any of the vocals. I was really dissappointed that they never figured it out after an hour and a half of playing. It was sad seeing so many people leaving after three or four songs.

The concert was great! There were several introducing bands, but "Uncaged" did the best at entertaining the audience and gave away free gear. This was the loudest concert at Harpo's we have been to. Security was good. There simply were not enough people. It may be the economy, college students not affording or having time... not quite sure -- not enough people. The older fan base was certainly prominent, so I believe the college kid's just couldn't crunch it. The play-list was great -- just in the wrong order. Two Danzig songs were played from my memory. Worth it -- they are back in October.

The Misfits have been around for 38 years but they still rock just as hard as they did when they were teenagers. The opening bands Burns like Fire, The Attack and Casket Creatures also did amazing jobs. We all had a blast.

Though I have never been to a Misfits show, my good buddies are super into them. Anywhere at the BB King was no more than 40 feet away from center stage. It was a great little club which gave a personal feel to the show. The Misfits played amazingly, and their costumes were awesome!

The Misfits are my favorite punk band. My first time at the Beaumont Club, it's a good place. Bar seating, good dance floor and excellent place to get right up to the band. Warmup bands are ok, but i just wanted to get to the Misfits. They were AWSOME, sounds different with Jerry singing, but he has a beautiful voice. They are still kicking major butt out there. They played a few Black Flag songs which was great cuz theyre my second favorite punk band. Wish Dez and Robo were doing signitures but they wernt. I got to actually talk to Jerry Only. He shook my hand, and i got a hug, he singed my ticket stub, and i got a picture with him and he smeared his eye makeup on me. There are no words for how amazing it was. He's so sexy and nice. I waited 10 years to get to seem and it was so worth it. The Misfits are the kings of horror punk and always will be.

Great energy, lots of interesting bands, and the Misfits were awesome! First time at this venue, I loved the layout and vibe of the place. However the sound did pretty much stink. Not sure if it's the acoustics or the sound guy since it was my first time there, but I saw the Misfits a few years ago at Harpos and the sound was 100 times better than this place. The Misfits played a balanced mix of old and new. I prefer the old, so I was also extremely happy when they threw in 3 Black Flag songs...Six pack, Jealous again, and Wasted. Anybody that won't go see these guys because Danzig or Graves aren't there are missing out on a goodtime! See you guys on the next lap!

IT WAS SO LOUD!!! but really, I don't ever remember it being that loud before. I think the vocal levels could have been adjusted to hear the words to the songs. A friend who has never heard a Misfits song in his life stil wouldn't be able to tell you what Jerry was singing, But I of course being a fan I could sing along to them all even though it was all sped up twice as fast for Maximum Mosh Pittage. Speaking if the Mosh pit, Many a cut and bruise were accuired and a couple people got knocked out completely. all in all a true fan would have LOVED it and begginers liked it.. but all are a little more deaf

Sound quality was absolutely horrendous. Couldn't understand spoken words and the music was completely muffled and distorted. I've seen these same bands in much smaller venues and these problems didn't exist. For the prices charged for the tickets for this show I expected a much more professional job. $50 for a burger, chicken fingers and 2 drinks is totally insane. I could've going to a nice restaurant and gotten a nice meal for not much more money

Yes, the tickets were expensive but I can honestly say it was worth every cent! Sound guy flubbed the first 2 songs but the band powered through and by song 3 the sound was back on track. Super awesome show, minimal talking from the band with rapid fire music. My only complaint is the stupid pouches the venue locked up our cell phones. The pouches were easy to get through but they were huge and stupid. Nowhere ahead of time did I see a "no cell phones" memo and I couldn't get that Damn pouch in my pocket.

While a lot of this might fall on the band, I hoped to get more for a $200+ ticket. The sound for the headline act (the Misfits) was abysmal: buried vocals, rampant feedback, uneven balance in the instruments.

There were sound issues in the beginning and vocals were inaudible the first 2 or 3 songs. I saw Danzig complaining that he couldn t here himself and asked Doyle to test out his guitar because he couldn t hear that either. Things improved after a few songs. Energy was great and it was great to see these guys play together. Others complained about the sound, but in a way, it s a punk show - the sound isn t supposed to be good even if that wasn t the intention. I liked that I wasn t competing for a view with people holding their phones up to record, but wish I could have taken one or two pictures.

We traveled from Seattle to Los Angeles for this show and it was worth every dime. We were in section 213 and we were worried we wouldn't be able to get a good view of the stage. I felt that it gave us a perfect side view and we were able to catch everything. The sound was amazing. The show was mind blowing. My two complaints are 1. not being able to use our cell within the facility and having to put them in those stupid cases and 2. the cost of the show.

I thought the venue was great but one thing I was disappointed about was the mic levels on Danzig. Either he threw his voice out singing at the Vegas show on the 28th or the sound guy messed up. My self and all the people sitting around me could barely hear him. I didn't mind not being able to use my phone. I was mad about it at first but it was actually nice seeing everyone mingle and talk. Also, getting to see all the lighters in the air was something I haven't seen at a concert in over 15 years. Very nostalgic!

I didn't really know what to expect going in. I originally was introduced to the 1995 incarnation of The Misfits, which of course introduced me to the classic Danzig-fronted Misfits, which became one of my all-time favorite acts. I'm not really crazy about this current version of The Misfits, as I felt that the last album was not very compelling and Jerry's vocals needed a lot of improvement. I was pleasantly surprised at this show. Before I talk about The Misfits, I want to mention one of the opening acts - Two Man Advantage. They seemed to have quite a following even though I have never heard of them before. A theatrical hardcore band performing songs about hockey and drinking, they came onstage in full hockey uniforms and blew the roof off the place immediately. The singer, a very obese man wearing a pillowcase, ran around the stage with the vigor of a much healthier man. A mosh pit formed as soon as the first song began. A member of the band joined the crowd. It was quite an experience, and I recommend them to anyone who wants to see something they will never forget. When The Misfits took the stage, Dez Cadena was absent, replaced by Jerry's Son, Jerry II, who was a more than competent guitarist and knew all the songs. He played them dutifully, and worked the stage but did not have a great presence or tremendous amount of personality. I still miss Doyle, who has plenty of flash and presence. Eric Arce was somewhat hidden behind his drum kit, but was definitely playing with a high energy and enthusiasm. It was clear in any case that Jerry was the star of the show. While he is not the musclebound beast he was as a young man, he is still a very big guy with undeniable stage presence. Even though he is tied to his bass guitar while he is singing, he has multiple microphones set up on stage so he can move around. Jerry really brought it! I was very impressed with his singing, which has greatly improved, and even at 55 years old he was keeping the energy levels very high. He went quickly from one song to another and covered a lot of material, including a lot of classic Misfits favorites. Unfortunately, some of the new material was performed as well and met with the sort of apathy one would expect. You can't expect him to exclude that material though. While this act is very much The Jerry Only Experience, it is surprisingly good. I definitely recommend seeing them. Of note is that it was a very young crowd, which was weird. A lot of very young kids.

I'm not saying anything new here....this is a carbon copy of the Misfits, but it's too many generations from the original to be good. It's barely acceptable. As long as they play the older songs, I'm entertained to some degree. Once they start playing the awful material from the newer records, I completely lose interest. Even the backdrop behind the band has replaced the iconic crimson ghost logo with Jerry Only's face. It's gotten a bit cartoonish and silly (I know...we're talking about a band singing songs about Romero horror movies. You get the point, though.). I have to say that the addition of Only's son on guitar did add to the sound. More backups (which are needed for the Misfits to sound like Misfits) and a thicker guitar sound to cover up the fact that Jerry isn't really playing the bass, as much as he posturing with it. I'd like to make a prediction, however. In the future, when Jerry passes on to that Green Hell in the sky, his son will take over and Misfits will carry on into eternity. Just a guess. Who knows? Obviously, everyone wants Glenn to come back, but I would even take Michael Graves. Jerry's voice just doesn't quite hack it.

The Misfits show was a pleasant surprise. A lifelong fan of the band I went in not expecting much of the aging band(with only one original member.) It was a show I needed to see and it did not disappoint. Although not as stellar as back in the hay day(especially without Danzig or Graves on vocals) Jerry Only and band put on a high energy, non stop show. With a mountainous setlist and high energy from the crowd I wish I could go back every night for more.

Seeing the Misfits live I knew would be a different experience than most. Without Danzig at lead vocals, I wasn t sure what to expect. The band has gone through a lot of line up changes with Jerry Only on vocals now. The stage show was great with lots of costumes, ghostly theatrics, Halloween inspired props and plenty of punk rock attitude. The band was relentless and played a full 90 minute set. I was a bit distracted by the humongous mosh pit that opened up a few feet below where I was standing, but the Misfits did an amazing job of hammering through a lengthy amount of their catalogue. I will admit, I was a little unimpressed by the material off their new album Devil s Rain but other than that, I enjoyed listening to the classics. The Dickies were a great opening band: so much high energy, hilarious props during each song and just an overwhelming happy stage presence. You don t see that too much at a punk show. D.I. also opened: a little forgettable and they re showing their age but they can still play. Juicehead was the youngest opening band: great sound, skilled guitar work. I enjoyed them.

Misfits are still going (strong) after all of these years. Jerry Only has done a good job maintaining the band, image and overall presence. The classics are still great even without Glenn Danzig or Michael Graves on vocals. The new(er) songs...eh...kind of lackluster to me. The club was really nice, multi-level with smoking deck bar on the roof. Overall, a good time.

What can you say, it was a cold night in Atlanta, but the Misfits show at the Masquerade really heated things up. the first opening acts were OK, but I was there for juicehead and the misfits. Juicehead was good with a nice set playing several songs from their first album and a few from the upcoming one too. Then the stage was cleared off and they began setting up for the fits. The crowd began to move close and tight to the stage as the drums, mics, and guitar stands were brought on. The fog began to pump out from back stage and the room knew what was in store. After a few quick sound checks, and the fog billowing out, the crowd was primed....the house lights dimmed, the stage blacked out and John Carpenter's theme from Halloween began ( if you have even seen the misfits you know the show is about to start)...you notice stirring on the darkened stage and the first cords and drum beats to "Halloween" as the stage and spot lights come on and the crowd surges forward ( I was shoved from about the 15th row to the 3rd, thank goodness for the no seats) and the show begins ! Jerry, Dez, and their latest drummer "the goat" take off ! Next is Nike-a go, Lamplight, Hybrid Moments and Teenagers from Mars, it was non stop them Jerry says thanks, and rips into Attitude, Some Kind of Hate, Astro Zombies, Skulls and 20 Eyes. So hot ! all the classics ! then Jerry turns it over to Dez for the Black Flag classic, Six-Pack only to be followed by Jerry back in action with Horror Hotel, Ghouls Night Out, Angelfuck, Hollywood Babylon, they one of my personal favorites Vampira, something not often played in concert followed by London Dongeon. I could not hear the next number but it was followed by the instrumental Abdominal Dr. Phibes and American Psycho and From Hell They Came. Another song I couldn't make out quickly followed by the all time classic Dig Up Her Bones, Kong at the Gates, Forbidden Zone and Helena. It was getting late as Dez led into another Black Flag number followed by the newest release Land of the Dead, followed by the NEVER PLAYED Saturday Night ( for the ladies quipped Jerry), Then the night got somber as Jerry introduced "Descending Angel" dedicated to friends lost this year.....We knew the end was near, then a bonus....Science Fiction, Double Feature, from the Rocky Horror Picture Show....the boys did a good job with it. Then they left the stage and the lights went out.....well if you have ever seen them you know its not over till Jerry breaks his strings and sure enuff they cam back for 2 more numbers....Rise Above by Black Flag ( I know AGAIN ? I THOUGHT THIS WAS A MISFITS SHOW) and then....the final number.....Die,Die, Die My Darling. Sure enuff Jerry snapped his strings, the lights dimmed, Dez and the goat left the stage,....then the lights cam on and as is the norm Jerry came out as he always and greeted the fans, signed autographs and took pictures. it was so much fun, I have seen them many times and always look forward to the next show...A new album is promised so we will see what the future may bring! I know a lot of folks are down on Jerry or only want the Glenn years, but the past is the past and we only have Jerry now. You know when going to the show that your not going to hear the best band in the world, just one of the best old school Punk bands still at it. I enjoyed the show as I always do, and cant wait for their next visit ! after all when you are a Misfit fan every day is Halloween !

The Misfits returned to the Norva in Norfolk this year, with Chicago upstarts JuiceheaD in tow. The opening band, a New Jersey quartet called Heart of the Matter let fly with some satisfactory emo-influenced pop punk. However, they were stiffled by muddy sound and failed to get the crowd moving. JuiceheaD hit the stage and lit it up. The unassuming Chicago three-piece let fly with some truly inspired power-punk, inciting one of the biggest mosh-pits of the nights with an Operation Ivy cover. Finally, the moment that the now much larger crowd was waiting for, The Misfits took the stage to the theme from Halloween and launched into their own classic "Halloween" causing the crowd to simply lose it. They blazed through a list of classic tunes, though much of the Walk Among Us era songs were noticeably absent. Of course, that did little to stifle the crowd of diehard fiends, who shouted every word and threw down in the pit to every song. As per usual, Jerry Only took a break from singing and let guitarist Dez Cadena sing a few Black Flag songs, which were greeted with much enthusiasm, and even motivated some of the older punks to join the pit. Jerry Only's voice has much improved since Project 1950, and the band played a new song, "Monkey's Paw" which fit right in with the setlist. Despite some moments of lost vocals due to overdriven guitars and a set which favored Earth A.D a little too much for this fan, the Misfits put on a brilliant show. I could not recommend this higher. You can own all the records, sing all the words in the shower or the car, but until you cram into a sweaty club and mosh with 500 or so other diehard fans, you'll never fully appreciate the band.

I wish Glen was there it would have made it sooooo much better. It was good seeing and hearing the songs live, I would rather go see Danzig though just because of Glen. There new songs suck and no one wants to hear them, everyone wanted to hear all the old stuff.

Danzig might have left the building, but Jerry Only does a great job of carrying the Misfits torch. The energy--and songs we grew up with--were all still there. Bonus points go to Dez for belting out some Black Flag classics. More bonus points go to Only's after-show actions: Grabbing a Sharpie and mingling with the fans. Classy. (And no, I'm not being ironic.) I'm even giving them max stars after wading through four opening acts. Four? Promoters, please, how about just one or two bands? Some of us are getting too old for a five-hour gig! (Although Orlando's The Attack did kick butt.)

Show was worth every penny. A local act opened and were very good follwed by 2 other bands and then the Misfits, so alot of show for the money. The venue is small so would rather see them at a slightly larger place. That said I was there a little early and had no problems parking or seeing the show. The Misfits played great, and did a few Black Flag covers as well. Jerry signed autographs from the stage after the show. Great show! Will go again when they come back.

Distorted wash of NOISE. They played every song way too fast, seemed like they were just rushing to hurry up and be done. NO effort at all to make anything even resembling a MISFITS song vocally. This band is a joke without a tallented singer fronting the stage and should hang it up or get Michael Graves to come back and sing.

I LOVE the Misfits but October 30th's show was pretty lame. The sound guy screwed up the majority of the show. The music sounded horrible, the sound guy wasn't paying attention to anything except drinking on the job, flirting with girls on the job, and singing on his microphone while the misfits were singing. I understand that the Misfits songs are like 30 seconds long, but I they seemed to know that the concert was going horrible, and seemed to rush through the concert just to get it over with. I've seen them two other times and this was not what I expected my 30 dollars to go to.

If you're into loud, fast punk rock, you should really check out The Misfits in concert. This was my sixth time seeing them, and this might have been the best so far. The energy in the Starland Ballroom was great, everyone was in costume and really into the show, singing loudly for many of the big hits. They debuted a couple of new songs from their forthcoming album that were well-received by the crowd. The only downside was the mosh pit, which was decidedly more violent then I've seen in some time. No less than 3 people physically removed by security, a handful of injuries including a young woman who I believe broke her nose, causing Jerry to stop playing during "Skulls" to make sure she was taken care of.

The Misfits were awesome as usual, but by the time they went on at 11:00 pm a lot of people were leaving. I can TOTALLY understand having a long show on a Saturday, but having 5 TOTALLY crappy opening bands that were given long sets was COMPLETELY ridiculous. the show ended at 12:15 am, and honestly the crowd was completely DEAD because of the length of the show.

Jerry and Dez still got it. Love seeing them. Opening bands were the worst I ever seen, there were three of them. WAYYYY too drawn out, totally killed the vibe. Also the drums where too loud, the vocals were too low and there was a little too much distortion in the guitars. It just makes it difficult to tell which song they are playing. But it seemed to get better as the show went on.

Been listening to the band for over 20 years now and seeing live for nearly as long. I used to like the Gerry and the Band thing but it's over. The sound quality is awful, the drumming is a mess the songs all run together in such a mix-mush that even the most experienced Misfits fan has trouble making out the actual song until the chorus hits. It's just an audio mess and just too sloppy. This was my last Misfits show unless I hear they start treating these songs with more respect and clean up the sound of these shows.

The show was pretty good, obviously. I was a little annoyed at the high speed of some lyrics that were not means to be so spastic, like "attitude" or "138"... two of my fav songs and it was waaaay too fast. I am all for a play on lyrics for a change of pace, but that was like fast forward and not lyrically pleasing at all. The slower songs were best mastered, like "London Dungeon". The band did a signing after which was cool. Nice venue too! I wouldn't miss the Misfits for anything, but I wish he would slow down and keep the tempo of the original songs.
