This was a great set. They front loaded with the "hits". Second half of the show was deep psych and old favorites. The new record is quite good. Go see them.

The band from Austin, TX played their Halloween gig at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in BK, NY dressed as if they just came from a Chain Saw Massacre. The neo-psychedelic drone of their lead singer Alex Maas and guitarists Christian Bland and Nate Ryan was complimented by the powerful drumming of Stephanie Bailey. The synchronized projections behind the performers pulled you deep into the music as if subliminal mesmerism were at hand. The only criticism I have is that the lyrics were hard to discern above the music leaving the vocals sounding like another (great) instrument in the mix. A fun show and perfectly suited to the occasion.

It's really good to see them headlining, last time I saw them they were opening for another band that wasn't nearly as good as they are! I have no complaints, they rocked The Bowery, it was a great night.

What could have been a great show was diluted by the exaggerated decibel levels. It was just too damn loud and I'm not too old.

OMG this was my 1st time seeing The Black Angels. I was so stoked. They were incredible. I was as close as you could possibly be. Alex was amazing. He is so talented. The setlist was great. I danced like a crazy person. I would see them many many many more times.

A buddy of mine convinced me to go to the show and I'm so glad he did. Their show was fantastic and their sound was perfect for a small live venue. I bought their last two albums after the show and listening to the CDs was like being back at the concert. Great retro sound!

We have seen this band twice at The Earl and it was amazing both times. Things moved at a steady pace and the sound was incredible! As opposed to at the Masquerade where we waited in 3 separate lines to get into the venue. Three bands played this night and it took over 30 minutes between each band to set up and sound check. As The Black Angels preformed it was obvious that they were having difficulties with the sound. Also, the crowd that seems to attend the Masquerade shows act very immature. It affects the vibe of the show greatly when some in attendance do not seem to be there for the music or care to respect anyone who is. Overall worth going because The Black Angels are a great band but would have rather seem them in another venue.

This show was mind blowing. I'm usually bored during the opening band, but not this time. Overcasters should be big. Go see them. They played music that I've been waiting to hear a long time. The Black Angels took me to a different dimension. It's difficult to really describe the experience to someone who wasn't there. It was like going back in time and into the future simultaneously.

They are consummate musicians. They give a good show. Show got a bit long with two opening bands. All three were interesting, fun, and good musicians, but none of them were really high, high, energy, so by the time the Black Angels came on, we were tired from standing & head nodding/swaying with the first two bands' music. No one danced until an inexplicable mosh pit broke out during the Angels set. I love a good slam, but, really... The Black Angels are more sit-around-with-a-martini-and-a-smoke kind of band rather than a stomp-your-neighbor-in-time-with-the-beat kind of music.

I was unimpressed by both the band and the venue. I was expecting a high energy performance from these guys, but they were just mechanical and dull. They don't sound any different live than they do recorded, and with no stage presence or personality there is really no reason to bother seeing them in concert. The venue didn't help things either. I don't know if the Fine Line has upped their capacity to sell more tickets, but here was no room to move, even in the periphery. It makes for a wholly miserable concert going experience, even if you love the band you're there to see.

I love the Black Angels and one of the opening acts, the Allah-lahs. The other opener, Elephant Stone was also very good. Fine Line Music Cafe is an awesome venue. However, I was very very disappointed with the city of Minneapolis. I have never seen a city so restrictive in my life. No parking after 11pm - violators will be towed? Do you want people downtown supporting your businesses? I drove 4 hours to go to this show only to find out that I'd have to either pay extra to park in a ramp or I could park on the street and have to run outside, missing the show, to plug a meter every two hours. I decided to do the latter, and hoped to time meter-plugging with the breaks in-between bands. Because the bands are pretty notorious for being keen on certain substances and it was the 20th of April, the show didn't start until nearly an hour after the billed start time. This meant the show would go long past 11pm and I would have to move to a pay lot after all. This is far from my first time in the big city and I understand that parking in the city isn't ever cheap, but I've never seen a city treat people like that. 11pm? Shutting down parking when everything else is open for at least 3 more hours is absolutely crazy. Stop treating your citizens and more importantly your visitors like children. Don't think I will ever return. Good riddance.

Locals, take note - The Black Angels and their visuals are absolutely stunning! What a great rock band through and through and the Fine Line was a great venue for them. I would recommend they locate themselves at First Ave next time though. More room, for more people because they will need the room...

Third time seeing the Angels in as many years, and they didn't disappoint!! No matter which album they're selecting songs from, they always bring a ferocious energy to their shows, truly a band you feel just as much as you hear! These guys clearly know what they're doing by now and put on a good show. "Bad Vibrations" was awesome live. If I could do it again, I'd listen to the new album more than once before seeing them - I wasn't able to understand most of the lyrics to the songs and it all started to blur together after about 30 minutes. Also wish the sound was LOUDER. But that's just me.

From the opening band to the end there was a positive energy that filled the room and a lot of reverb! This was the first time that i was to see Spindift and The Black Angels. Spindrift's feeling brings you back in time to the old west, very trippy. The hollow body & steel guitars, along with the complimenting vocals make for a broad , full sound. Dead Meadow, one of my favorites, with their original drummer put on another flawless presentation. I can't say enough about Dead Meadow. Such a great band! The Black Angels are pretty sick as well, with almost everyone playing bass to some pretty crazy lead guitars. they definitely had a jam of talent on board. MHOW is also a GREAT place for a show. From the way it is set up to the eateries local. A+

After listening to all their songs on Youtube, I thought they all sort of sounded the same. Well after listening to them live, their songs REALLY all sounded the same. On top of that, they didn't perform them as well live. Their volume was ridiculously loud. If it wasn't cranked enough, old dude kept SCREAMING INTO A MICROPHONE! Who does that? My ears rang for over 2 days afterwards. All in all I wish I would've just kept my $5.

I flew in from Denver to see this show, Denver is out of the way for most tours, I was not disappointed with what I heard , However the light show could of stayed in Texas as it added nothing to the experience. Recommend Shane A Williams, Greeley Co, for a light show that would put the total experience on track, He did the show for them at the Bluebird in Denver. The only song I missed them playing , would of been in the encore " You in Color "

The El Rey Theatre is a great place to see a band (you can actually see them, instead of on a big screen !!!) I'm always excited when my favorite bands play there. Even tho I'd love them to gain a huge fan base, I hate when they do, and end up at the Nokia or other similarly large venues. I also saw The Black Angels the following night, at the Belly Up in Solana Beach (another great venue to see bands up close) The band did not disappoint ........... two nights in a row !!!!

Sleepy Sun was amazing. They have quite the range, bluesy harmonica, psychedelic rock a la Black Sabbath, and hard charging rhythms reminding me of Led Zepplin. Would love to see them headline. Black Angels were good too, though after a couple songs the volume levels were way to loud at El Rey.

Awesome show, opening bands didn't suck like some of the reviews say. These guys really kick ass and boasting a hot female drummer never hurts! Could have used a little more mic for the vocals but who the hell cares about vocals when there is face-melting rock. Go see them now, before they blow up and you have to see them at a big venue with actual seating.

Well, the Black Angels were amazing as expected although they did appear a little road weary and tired, but none of their fatigue showed through in their show. Suuns on the other hand sucked. Its not that the music was bad, because it wasn't. Their front man's stage presence reminded me of a wounded spineless animal mewling into the microphone. I couldn't understand the lyrics and he looked like he was suffering a stroke.Sister of Your Sunshine Vapor on the other hand really surprised me with excellent music and an impressive show. Rock and Roll is still alive in Detroit.

This was the best concert I have ever been too. It was crazy loud (I wish I had worn earplugs), but the bombastic sound of The Black Angels carried me away to such an extent that it seemed like they had only begun playing by the time we in the audience were all cheering for an encore. A truly unforgettable night. The opening act Suuns were truly disappointing (I had high hopes that were not met).

This was my first time at the Magic Stick or the Majestic in general. Really cool place. I hadn't listened to The Black Angels before the show but I just dove right in. I was pretty high and the members of the band before them all made funny faces. That was entertaining. I was up front and loved feeling the music in my body. But then again the music was so loud it was kind of all droning together. Good experience though. I got what I paid for.

After ending up over 100 people back in line at The Fox Theatre, and therefor having difficulties getting to the front of the pit the night before, I decided to arrive early at The El Rey for 'The Black Angels.' I was #7 to get in there. I positioned myself front and center, able to rest my elbows on the stage so I had a great view. 'The Black Angels' were fantastic at The Fox on 5/14. They literally stole the show from 'The Kills' (another of my favorites), and did so with no sound check at that show. Two guys I met at The El Rey came early for the sound check assured me they sounded amazing warming up. This was an understatement if I ever heard one. They completely ripped it up from start to finish! There is so much diverse, accomplished playing from this 5-piece that you don't know where to look at any given time!! If you watch Stephanie hit those skins, you're going to get mesmorized and miss one of Christian's cookin' solos. Alex's singing is hypnotic as well, until he lets out one of those screams (just to break the spell for a minute). I finally decided that if I missed a screeching guitar run, not to worry. There's going to be more... and in abundance!! I haven't had so much fun dancing and rocking out in a very long time. And I told them so after the show. You're never going to meet a nicer bunch of people. Something I learned from their head roadie: In Berlin recently, at the end of the show, the crowd refused to leave the building after encores and kept chanting "New Velvets, new velvets!" They are absolutely huge in Europe! In response to this, I have to say that I have been a 'Velvet Underground' fan for 35+ years. It's not difficult to mention 'The Black Angels' in the same sentence as The VU!! The Black Angels wear their influences so very well. I asked Alex when they might be coming back this way and his reply was, "I'm not sure. I think after this tour I want to take some time off to write another album..." I mention this only because if you're lucky enough to have the opportunity to see them, don't miss it. It might be a little while before they tour again. Their tour manager rides a long-board skateboard, which I was admiring. I've been wanting to trade in my standard board for a long-board for some time. He said "Yeah man, I'm getting too old to be eating it on a short-board. I'm 35 now!!" I guess that makes me ancient! That's me, an ancient Rock and Roll rebel. Oh well. No worries. I think I'm going to make a point of flying down to Austin, TX (home of TBA) for their big Psych Festival next year. I gotta see 'em play in their home town. Anyone game for that??!!

The first time I saw the Black Angels I considered it one of the best shows I had seen. So I was really excited to see them this time (being my 2nd show). Keep in mind I wasn't too familiar with the new album. The opener was super fun to watch. The had a super energetic stage presence and I loved their songs. When the Black Angels came on I was excited but immediately noticed the energy level was no where near what the openers had, granted that is their style. Towards the end of the show, I was ready to leave. All in all I liked the opener better.

Don't get me wrong, I love their music, and I'm happy that they've become more popular, but the place was crawling with people who seemed to be there for either a loud industrial show or a place where they could loudly carry on a conversation with loud background music while getting drunk with their bros. There really wasn't a comfortable place to stand or sit and enjoy the performance, and I was a bit disappointed that they didn't take the stage until after 10pm. If it hadn't been such a long day, and if Boston's public transportation didn't stop at midnight, I wouldn't have minded as much, but it was just the icing on a miserable cake. I didn't stick around for the encore since they appeared to be taking their own sweet time re-taking the stage, which is pretty ridiculous since it's such a small venue. It's not like their dressing room was in another building. If I do see them again, I'll make sure it's a larger (or outdoor) venue.

We went to see Roky Erickson after discovering his song "Starry Eyes" playing in a bar in San Francisco this past Nov, 2013. Became HUGE fans ! Bought the anthology C.D. & have become obsessed with most of it !Love that "We sell soul "sound.... like the garage bands from Detroit & N.Y., mixed with The MC5, Them with Van Morrison, The Seeds, The Yardbirds, Eric Burden, & some of the early soul singers. His band The Baskervilles, especially the lead guitar player, were also very good & worked well supporting & enhancing Roky's sound. Gave us all we hoped for except "Starry Eyes" & "We sell soul !" Also wish they would have played longer & been the headlining band. Roky has a stong stage presence yet the innocence of a child. What a guy after all he's been thru. We hope he continues to play regularly. We'd go see him again & again ! THE OPENING BAND WAS AWFUL !!!!!!!!! (The Golden Animals) The Black Angels "had their moments" but were a 6 1/2 on a 1 - 10 scale. Singer was tiresome & drummer was pretty bad. Good guitar player & keyboards were the highlights of their performance and SO HAPPY bands still go in that 1960's direction ! Kudos for that !! Saw video of Black Angels with Roky Erickson & that was more impressive than seeing & hearing their band without him. GREAT theatre ! Sound could be better. Not sure if it was the sound co. or acoustics of theatre.

The Black Angels are unique in their ability to mix styles & sounds, and to turn tribal drum beats into psych wonderlands. They share bass guitar duties, they gel together superbly, and create a heavenly vibe throughout. Many vintage instruments being put to good use here, especially the guitars. Drums & Keyboards sounded great, too. Lighting and projection get an A+, too.

I have always liked the Black Angels but have never seen them. My boys, now 20, are fans for the last few years so I surprised them by taking them. The show was fantastic. The sound was awesome, the lighting was great and even the opening bands were great, although we did not get the names of them :( ? Hope to see them again...

Fantastic show. I went in with virtually no expectations, that is to say, I'd heard both bands' studio material, but had never even read a review of their live show. Goat came on first, and they were incredible. This is the band that I really wanted to see at this show, and they did not disappoint. They are a Sweedish voodoo band, so I was expecting it to get a little (which it did). Everyone in the band wears masks, which makes for a slightly unsettling stage presence, which I really liked. Their playing was top-notch. They ran through their album songs, I believe and even through in some unexpected improv. I'd liken their improve to a band like Primal Scream: really thoroughly exploring riffs, with one band member adding a little something every time. It was really cool. The Black Angels came on next. I'd listened to their album Phosphene Dream a few times, and really dug it. I realized that they came out with a new album about a month ago (early April), and I hadn't listened to it. The music from the two albums sounds a lot different. Their new album has a much harder edge, and that really shined through during their performance. Even their older songs had a hint of heaviness. The lead singer for the Black Angels has a great voice. He actually reminds me a lot of the early rawness of Grace Slick. Their lights were done through a projector, and they did some stuff that I have never seen before, mirroring of the band over and over into a horizon line, etc. Cool stuff, hard to explain. I had a great time, and I would definitely see either of these bands again. You should too.
