I decided to treat my 5 year old granddaughter and my daughter to the Sunday afternoon performance just before Christmas. What a wonderful experience! Our seats were in the 2nd row, and for a 5 year old, were perfect for her to see and enjoy all aspects of this wonderful ballet. The Auditorium itself is an old theatre, with old seats! and very few bathroom facilities, so be forewarned if you are going with small children. Give yourself plenty of time to tackle those lines. But all is forgiven when the Sugar Plum Fairy comes to dance, absolutely magical! This was the last time that Robert Joffery's choreography for the Nutcracker was performed. Next year there is a new choreographer at the Joffrey, and we are excited to see this ballet again, and may even make it an annual event.

Superb in every possible way. The accessibility, ambience, and acoustics of the Chicago Auditorium exceeded my hopeful expectations. The costumes and sets are beautiful and visually appealing. And the performance... breathtaking. Truly the type of performance that expands your understanding of what focused, hardworking, gifted human beings can achieve. The music and dance are woven into one entity, one beautiful and inspirational display of the very heights of human achievement that challenges perfection!

The dancing was spectacular! The first half was amazing. I don't really care for the new version of Nutcracker - the story is lost and we don't see the Nutcracker much in the 2nd half.

The Joffery Ballets Nutcracker was simply stunning. My husband and I sat mesmerized through the whole first act. So deeply involved in the story and dancing the first acts flew by. We both decided this will be a new yearly tradition! All I can say is thank you Joffery for the dose of Christmas cheer!!

Joffrey Ballet had a very unique take on the Nutcracker. This ballet company had talent and did not star one particular individual, but many.

I was born and raised in Chicago and at the age of 21 I started to attended the Joffrey Ballet: Nutcracker annually. Seven years ago I moved to the south and continued to watch local production of the Nutcracker. I currently live and Houston and I must say that the Houston Ballet puts on a better production. I was disappointed with the Joffery Ballet. A few parts was missing and I hate that I didn't see the Nutcracker at the very end of the play. I hated the closing.

Loved it. Beautiful set. Wonderful dancers . A great Christmas family favorite! My only wish is that the costumes for the Waltz of the Flowers were prettier and incorporated real flowers to create a truly magical experience.

love the Joffrey Nutcracker! Costumes are always stunning and the live music is amazing. Some stand out performances...the Snow Prince was incredible. Could not take my eyes off him; he danced so beautifully. second act seemed to lack a little energy/passion? But again, overall a great show.

Words cannot describe the magical feeling that came from that stage. I have always wanted to see the Nutcracker, I never watched it on TV, I have never seen children perform it, because I wanted to see it in person--professionally done and I was not disappointed.

Great Christmas tradition for my family. For years we have traded-off between the Nutcracker and A Christmas Carol. As my kids get older (now middle teenagers), they are choosing the Nutcracker with more frequency. They are absolutely enamored by the physicality of the dancers.

It was a weird take on the story. There was no romantic vibe between Clara and the Nutcracker Prince. Instead the Nutcracker and the Sugar Plum Fairy seemed to be an item.

This was my first experience to see the Joffrey Ballet and it did not disappoint! Needless to say the music of the Nutcracker Suite was exquisite and the performers gave a flawless performance in my eyes. An even greater tribute was the response of my seven-year-old granddaughter who accompanied me. She sat enthralled through the entire performance and pronounced it "awesome" at the end! She said the 2 hours felt like only minutes. I think she was impressed and so was I! It's a must-see Christmas experience that thrills young and old alike!

I went with my 10 year old daughter to see the Joffrey Ballet do the Nutcracker in Chicago. We very much enjoyed the ballet (although she didn't care for the traditional Pas De Deux). Sets and costumes were wonderful, dancing was great. However, we were seated in the balcony, about a third of the way back and had issues with that (Auditorium theater in Chicago). It was almost impossible to see, and the seats were cramped with the row in front being too close and not enough lower (she had issues seeing over the head of the person in front, I had to lean as well). I wouldn't recommend any of the balcony seats in that theater, unless you're front row. So, I would recommend the Joffrey, but I would be very careful where you sit, and don't assume the balcony seats are close enough to see anything. That part was very disappointing.

The dancing, music, costumes, sets, and the snow were unbelievable. Extremely well done. I am a fan of ballet, but previously found the Nutcracker to be a snore. The ballet was good; it's just that I have a lot to compare to. Orchestra was exceptional. Costuming was stunning, the dances were average though there were some highlights. The male dancer in the Arabian Dance in the Land of Sweets was soooo thin you could see his entire rib cage and clavicles which to me is rather disturbing. His female partner was the best dancer in their version of the Nutcracker. The Spanish and Chinese dancers were also exquisite, so kudos to these dancers. This version cuts the ballet short and you do not see an awakening of Clara the morning after. The snow scene was beautiful. I would have to say one of the ushers was so unwelcoming that I felt like leaving. I approached my seat which she was standing in front of while having a personal conversation with someone she was acquainted. I stood off to the side to give her personal space and let her finish. She turned to me and told me I had to hurry up and take my seat. When I told her she was standing to the entrance to the row I needed she turned instead and resumed her conversation. After she was finished she again told me to hurry up and take my seat. I'm a very nice person and do not treat others with a lack of dignity and respect, so I let my experience with her go. Peoples flashes were going off right and left before the ballet started and when I raised my camera (without flash and set on a high ISO), she threw a emotional verbal fit and was on me like white on rice telling me to give her my camera as she was going to erase the photo since no photos are allowed to be taken prior, during or after the "show." She accidently dropped my Nikon D300 which I will need to send in to be serviced as something went wrong when it fell to the floor. I did notice she did NOT approach anyone else whom was using flash cameras before, DURING, or after the performance. This was expensive experience for me and I will never return to this venue when i'm in Chicago.

Amazing. The music and dancers moved me.I couldn't stop smiling. This was my three daughters first ballet as well. They loved it. The only thing was, we dressed up but most people attending were in street clothes. Had imagined an event where people dressed to impress, more glamour. The building it self is a work of art. Beautiful. Can't wait for our next ballet. We are hooked.

I grew up with a tradition of attending the The Nutcracker every Christmas with my family in San Francisco. This year I thought it would be a wonderful gift to take my children to see it in Chicago but I was very disappointed with the production. The set looked cheap and the dancing was okay. The symphony, however, was the highlight of the performance. I will not see it again in Chicago.

I am happy to say The Joffrey's performance of the Nutcracker has been a tradition for 9 years now. So much so, part of the fun each year is finding different places to sit to get a different perspective of the play. This year it was the lower level box seats. The performance was excellent and as usual a feeling of sadness comes over us when it ends. Thank you again for showing me why I keep making this a yearly tradition.

I've been going to the Nutcracker for over 8 years and always look forward to it. I've taken my daughter for the past 4 years (she is now 6). Last year the play changed. Many of our favorite and famous scenes have been removed. I hate to admit this but the first act was quite boring and dragged on for much longer than needed. Scenes like the Sugar plum fairy, the huge puppet that spans the stage, the children opening gifts from under the tree, the rat being dragged off the stage, have all been removed. SO SAD! My daughter kept asking when these scenes would appear. I really wish they would return these favorite scenes.

The Nutcracker is timeless - the music, the dancing, the set. Until 2016 when the Joffrey decided to shake it up a bit. The new choreography and adaptation is horrible. We have come to see this every year for 10 years and will not be back (not unless it is changed back to the traditional theme). My daughter was so disappointed and confused - and I spent the entire show trying to translate this into what she knew. I am 100% behind updating things so they are fresh and new, but this was so bad! A waste of $300, and a sad child to boot.

Let me start by saying we have seen the Joffrey Nutcracker every year for the past 10 years. We brought our daughter for the first time when she was only 3 and were all completely enchanted by the talented company, brilliant choreography, the beautiful sets and costumes and the magical quality of the perfomance. It was opulent, over-the-top eye candy!! We looked forward each year to planning our new Christmas tradition and learned which dancers we enjoyed in specific parts. Our dream team was Fabrice as the Nutcracker Prince and Victoria Jaiani as the Sugar Plum Fairy in the Grand Pas De Deux!!! We were stunned when we heard last year was the last time we'd see the show as we knew it but looked forward to the new iteration. Well...to say we were disappointed last night is an understatement. I understand Christopher Wheeldon had a problem with the notion of a rich girl who has everything falling asleep and getting more. As a result, the reimagined Nutcracker is dull and dreary. The first act was in a word - gloomy. Gone is the joy of the opening party scene, the hilarity of the life-sized toys come to life, the battle between the mouse king and the nutcracker prince and Clara hitting the mouse king with her shoe. Even the Land of Snow scene that was once lush and magical seemed tired. The second act was much of the same. All of the divertissements have been changed. With the exception of Coffee, all were dull and flat. Mother Ginger is now a campy obvious man sitting on top of a house. Buffalo Bill was humorous but the 3 floozies were completely out of step and looked like strippers!! White thigh highs and garter belts? Seriously?? The Waltz of the Flowers, once so enchanting with all of the dancers throwing petals in the air was distracting with dancers again out of sync. The sugar plum fairy needs a sparkly tutu, not a long, gold dress!! We heard this was a "brilliant" reimagination to the tune of $4 million. We didn't see brilliance. We saw change for sure, but not for the better. We did see many empty seats, maybe due to the weather, but can't imagine anyone thinking this new production is an improvement. Our tradition has sadly, ended.

It was worth paying extra to sit closer. I sat on the ground floor, center section around row P by the isle. I could see the entire stage, no one blocked my view and I was close enough that you could see the sparkles on the costumes. The dancers are so talented and I would recommend anyone to go see the Joffrey Ballet Company do any of there performances. I took my mother and she enjoyed it as well, and had no problem seeing or having distracting children around.

The dancing was fabulous but the scenery and number of background characters was greatly paired down this year. My family goes every year, but this performance was not up to the usual standards. No male Spanish dancer, missing many of the beautiful background scenery additions and no mouse being hauled off on a stretcher after the battle!

Every aspect of this performance was wonderful! The music was perfect, the dancers were phenomenal. I often found myself wondering how the heck they were able to stay on their toes with all that "snow" and confetti on the floor! How sad that this is the last performance of Robert Joffrey's Nutcracker. However, knowing of the professionalism and mastery of dance of this troupe, I don't doubt that next year's Nutcracker will be just as spectacular! I'm already making plans to see it.

I thoroughly enjoyed my night at the Joffrey's production of The Nutcracker. I bought the tickets for my Mother's Christmas gift, and we simply had the best time! I grew up going to ballet productions in NYC, but this was my first time in Chicago, and I will be going again. My Mother and I were so taken with the incredible talent, and performance, that we bought tickets to see the company's production of Cinderella, in the spring. This version of the Nutcracker was the most beautiful and magical one I've ever seen! Having grown up in the arts -- and even having worked there for a short time -- this ballet and company is close to my heart. My boyfriend took me as my Christmas gift (best gift EVER!), and as someone who has never been nor does he usually enjoy such things, he also enjoyed it very much! I'm heartbroken that the Joffrey would end it's run of the most incredible storybook-come-to-life for something more contemporary and join the likes of the rest of the world, when they had something so unique and magical! It rivals all others. I gave a standing ovation for their last run. My boyfriend chose right ;) Bravo, Joffrey Ballet! Your Nutcracker made so many adults feel like children again!

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Auditorium Theatre and watching this performance. We went the day before Christmas Eve, and it was such a treat! Our seats were just perfect and we were able to see everything. Also, the dancers were amazing! Besides the actual performance, the theatre was so beautiful and clean. One negative thing that I would say is that the employees at the gift shop area were very unenthusiastic and lacked basic manners. Personally, I understand that they are in this environment every day and that it must get boring, but it would not hurt to smile. Other than that everything was amazing and I am so glad that we decided to attend this show. Also, the parking area that the company recommended was perfect - not too far. Nothing else needs to be said. Georgious dancers, enthusiastic children participation, wonderfully balanced orchestration, all contribute to making this a must to welcome in the holiday season. Furthermore, the Auditorium Theater is a magnificent venue providing excellent viewing for the audience, including children. So glad to see a number of young boys in attendence, as they were treated to expert dancers who, in their own rights, are amongst the greatest athletes they could ever hope to emulate. This is the forth year we've traveled in from Indiana to see this production of highly professional dancers and the ballet and will continue to do so as long as we are able.

My daughter (age 26)and I have attended the Nutcracker since she was 3 years old. We arrived today 5 minutes late. We were directed to sit in seats from the 5th floor balcony until intermission. I must say, in all of these years, I always thought closer was better. But the view was fabulous! Although you are not able to see their faces clearly due to the distance; but if you are like us and have seen it many times, this was an amazing view of the entire stage. We were able to see the vibrant color petals lying on the stage floor from the Waltz of the Flowers. You would not be able to have seen them from the main floor. At intermission, we went to our original box seats and immediately returned to the lower balcony because the view was so much better. No obstructions up there and you are able to see the orchestra. Next time, I'll bring binoculars and it will be even more indescribably beautiful. A wonderful performance. One note, I'd like to see a fellow "sheep" herder disguise himself as a wolf during the "Marzipan" and fool the girls. It is more entertaining than just the 2 girls dancing.

We go almost every year and it's always an amazing performance. This year was no exception. We were shocked and saddened to hear that it was the last year that it will be performed in Chicago. I don't understand, as it's always a full house...

Didn't actually see it due to the Metra train breaking down. But Ticketmaster's fees are ridiculous. Ticketmaster is absolutely despicable. They belong in jail for their extortionate fees.

Although I have seen The Nutcracker on TV, this was my first live performance: awesome. The theater is in need of a little maintenance, but overall the venue was amazing with great old world architecture. To bad modern buildings will not withstand such tests of time. The theater was larger than I expected; however I don't believe there to be a bad seat in the house. It did tend to get a little warm in the upper sections so dress lightly or in layers.

Always beautiful! Our children, 7 and 10 years old, have seen many productions of The Nutcracker. The Joffrey's takes the cake. The production is magical. The live music is rich and familiar, which is great for kids. And, of course, the dancing is beautiful.

Definitely a must do experience. The venue was crowded in the lobby, but after sitting the room was adequate.

The show was great! Unfortunately we get there a little late so had to sit up in the late-arrival section which made it difficult to see. Once we got to our seats it was much better. The show was great!

The performance was outstanding. I was frustrated that the refreshment stands were not adequately staffed based on the attendance. Why would there not be enough attendants to serve more of those attending the performance. As it was, the lines were too long and not all guests were served. Lot of frustration!!!!

This is a classic! So much is going on and the dancers are magnificent. You could see this 10 times and see new things every time. It is hard to determine what to focus on--the whole spectacle, the musicians, specific dancers ... It is nearly overstimulating but a joy!

My daughter and I searched out for the Nutcracker performance in another City this year; it is a tradition for us. We were so thrilled with the performance of the Joffrey Ballet at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago. All the performers were exceptional and made it an exciting show... and the orchestra!!!!!!!

I'm pretty cynical and judgemental and this event was my mother's Christmas gift. A life long dream of hers. I was completely blown away by the grace and beauty of the dancers. There were moments so gorgeous I had to hold back the tears! It is an experience we will both cherish for the rest of our lives. I wish I could express my gratitude to all the performers. Seeing their strength, poise and elegance up close was so inspiring!

Production is looking a little tired in its last year, can see why they are mounting a new one next year. But the dancers were great, and my 4-year-old son enjoyed it overall, though he got a little restless during the more extended dancing sections. But really, the tickets are just still way too expensive for a family outing. Couldn't they be a little discounted for matinees?

This is indeed one of the best performances I have ever seen. The cast is professional and maybe the best in the world. We sat in the 4th row center stage and were able to see everything. Price paid is well spent to view world class performers. the Joffrey Ballet should be on your "Must See" list for a wonderful experience and just something spectator to brag about to your friends. Highly recommended - Nutcracker is for the whole family and a great holiday experience.

We booked this performance a few months ago when we planned our trip from London. I was surprised at the cost of the tickets but didn't question the cost until after the performance itself. Having seen Nutcracker performed by the Royal Ballet in London this Chicago performance was no comparison. Personally it was like a high school production apart from the music which was performed perfectly. Some of the cast were out of time and not in sync. Overall I would never recommend this production at these prices.

What a magical experience. I am not a child, far from it, but have always loved the music and wanted to see the ballet. When I learned that this would be the last season to see the Joffrey Ballet's Nutcracker I knew I needed to fulfill my whim. I was not disappointed, in fact, it far exceeded my expectations. The colors, the dancers, the costumes, the grandeur, the music, the settings and the theater all contributed to the experience. If I had any complaint would be it ended too soon.

We are never disappointed in the Joffrey. This is our 4th year back with our (now) 7 year old daughter who has performed in a local production 3X. We also performed as party parents this year. This is a classic and with mixed emotions await next years new format.

the CSO was great - most of the dancing was fine - perplexed as to what happened to the nutcracker -he came to life and shortly thereafter was not seen again - ever - did they have a staffing problem ? Drosselmeyer became Clara's consort - a little creepy - I have attended 18 performances over the years and this is not what I expected - oh well
