Something Rotten! (Chicago)

Something Rotten! (Chicago)

With 10 Tony® nominations including Best Musical, SOMETHING ROTTEN! is a “big, fat hit!” (New York Post). Set in the ‘90s – the 1590s – this hilarious smash tells the story of Nick and Nigel Bottom (Tony® nominee Rob McClure and Broadway’s Josh Grisetti), two brothers who are desperate to write their own hit play while the "rock star" Shakespeare (Tony® nominee Adam Pascal) keeps getting all the hits. When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first MUSICAL! With its heart on its ruffled sleeve and sequins in its soul, SOMETHING ROTTEN! is “The Producers + Spamalot + The Book of Mormon. Squared!” (New York Magazine).

It is a really funny show with phenomenal cast. Very good acting, dancing and singing ... all this united in an exciting choreography. Thanks for this nice evening and a lot of success for all further performances in the future (I believe, this production will come to Hamburg/Germany too in autumn.

When this was on broadway, I thought, it this every comes to Chicago I need to go. Thank goodness I was watching for it. We went on a Tuesday night and while not a full house, still was very well attended. This may be the funniest show I have ever seen. My entire group was laughing all the way through the show and all the way home after. Days later we are still listening to the soundtrack all over our house. If you get the chance to see this, don't miss out!

Something Rotten was hysterically funny. My cheeks hurt from laughing so much. You had to listen closely to even "get' all the references to other musicals and quotes from Shakespeare. The creative minds that wrote this musical are in a class all their own. The actors were just so great with their timing, facial expressions, and costumes. I would gladly see it again and probably catch so many things that I may have missed the first time.

Liked The Producers, Funny ...Forum, Once Upon a Mattress , other cotton candy satirical shows about musicals? Rotten is a musical comedy aficionado delight-The Bottom Brothers in Elizabethan England foresee the future and its American musical as their only chance of competing with Will Shakespeare. A farcial backstory of the Bard's development of Hamlet is found in their mounting of Omlet. Show is filled with insider puns of familiar musicals since the 60's and lampoons Elizabethan/ Contemporary Theatre tastes in a farcial plot . This Chicago touring cast is impeccable in its fresh rendering of funny but largely forgettable tunes. Standing ovation at curtain was a perhaps a bit overstated but nevertheless an indication o overall pleasure

I enjoyed this witty presentation, humorous dialogue, musicals referenced by a line in the script. The loony concept and confused perception of a soothsayers vision along with the dancing, costumes and song had me laughing. The audience caused regular halts in the shows performance with extended applause. Seemed to me everyone left the theater with a smile on their face.

The sound guys for the production should be fired. Two actors (the Minstrel and Shakespeare) mics were not functioning right, my wife and I both couldn't hear them well and therefore did not understand everything they said. The show itself (story, music and dancing was fantastic! There was so much tap dancing Mel Brooks would have been proud. Loved the show.

Simply Magnificent! This luxurious 1920s Rapp and Rapp theater was wonderfully restored in the 1990s, and is perfectly designed for a modern Broadway musical. We sat in the very back of the orchestra section, and the comfort, visibility and sound were all terrific! I look forward to seeing many more shows at the Oriental! We saw Something Rotten on its second day in Chicago. This is one of the funniest musicals ever written... non-stop laughs from curtain to curtain. Great songs, great dances, terrific performances from very talented actors! They take nothing seriously... Most Broadway musicals think they need a mix of quiet and sound, of sadness and joy... not this show. It's hilarious throughout. We gave them a well-deserved standing ovation. Showstopper after showstopper. Don't Miss This Show!

I had wanted to see Something Rotten since it was on Broadway, and finally had the opportunity here in Chicago. It exceeded my high expectations! The show is incredible - so many hilarious references to pretty much every Broadway hit over the past years, I know I didn't catch everything, so I will try to see it again. The cast is outstanding, great singing, dancing, and acting. The story line is amusing and the characters all have quirks and traits that are endearing or funny. I laughed throughout the show. The cast gets a workout on this one! So much talent and energy on stage. The writing is quick and clever and the delivery was spot on. The sound system made it a little difficult to delineate words in a couple of numbers so I hope that gets adjusted. You probably have to be a theater geek to get a lot of the references but I am so it was hilarious!!! Kudos to the cast for making it seem like it was opening night and closing night and that we were all dignitaries in the audience. So refreshing to enjoy an original story line. Crazy that there were empty seats. I hope that word of mouth will convince theater goers that this is a MUST SEE!

My husband and I had listened to the soundtrack CD for a year before we saw the production. We thought we had an idea of what might be expected but, we were wrong...We were blown away by the hilarity and the number of wonderfully over the top, extravagant numbers that there were. It was totally beyond our expectations. Everything was fantastic, the choreography, the book, the music and the talent! This is one of the few musicals that if it were held over we would want to see it again. Actually, the woman seated next to us said the same thing.

Something Rotten is the funniest stage production since Book of Mormon. The music is catchy and provides an excellent medium for conveying hysterical dialogue. I listened to the soundtrack before seeing the show, and was really looking forward to it. It did not disappoint! The characters are fun, and the lyrics so clever. And the little pokes at all the different musicals was hilarious. If you're a fan of musicals, you'll be wracking your brain to try to catch all the references. And I have to say, that watching the signers for the hearing impaired was also amazing. It was fun to see them interpret the dance numbers - they do much more than just translate the dialog. They also give their audience a feel for the show. See this show.

A true American musical. Big production numbers, catchy tunes, quick pace and very, very funny. The 'Omelette' production number rivaled The Producer's 'Springtime for Hitler" in it's over the top camp. The cast was terrific; notably Rob McClure, Maggie Lakis and Blake Hammond. The only downside, in my opinion, was Adam Pascal's Shakespeare. We could barely understand him; he spoke quickly and not very clearly...he just wasn't funny. I would love to see this again but with a different Shakespeare. Either way, a terrific show.

Something Rotten! is not for everyone but it is entertaining, particularly if you are familiar with both Shakespeare and musical theater. No, it doesn't get all the historical facts "right" (there was actually music in many Shakespeare plays, though they weren't the typical musical plot development songs), but the dancing/choreography was impressive and the silly tone helped me overlook any errors--not that in that silliness there weren't a few deeper, serious issues addressed. However, the older woman sitting next to me did not return after the intermission (she didn't look like she was enjoying the show), possibly because of the innuendos and raunchier jokes. So there are three reasons (lack of knowledge of Shakespeare or musicals and some of the jokes) a viewer wouldn't enjoy this show very much, but even without the further knowledge, most viewers would still find this entertaining.

This musical comedy is a must see for anyone who enjoys musicals. The play is about friendship and about the "invention" of the musical n Shakespearean times. The music and dancing are great, and there is not a single less than wonderful performer. I haven't laughed out loud at a play in years. Do yourself a favor, and go see Something Rotten. P.S. There is also closed caption on the side of the stage. It was not distracting, and I occasionally consulted it when I didn't catch the lyrics.

Excellent acting, singing and dancing. Great show. However the bass in the orchestra was so loud that it was hard if not impossible to hear the singers. Even when the full chorus was singing. We had to order the CD so we can listen to the words in the songs. I blame this problem on the sound man not the orchestra. Needs a better sound man on the sound board.
