James Blake

Influenced by the likes of D’Angelo and Stevie Wonder along with Burial and Mount Kimbie, James Blake is known for injecting some soul into the genre of dubstep. The London-based producer first gave the world a taste of his quirky, R&B-sampling strain of dubstep in 2009 when his Air & Lack Thereof 12” appeared on the Hemlock label. Blake received quite the endorsement when the heralded Soul Jazz label picked the track up for their Steppas' Delight 2 compilation that same year. In 2010 the R&S label released his CMYK EP while Hessle Audio issued his 12” single The Bells Sketch.

I rarely write reviews, but I had to do one for this. First of all I had never been to the Arlington theatre. What an amazing venue! The staff were friendly, seats were comfortable and most importantly the sound was phenomenal! James Blake is one of those artists where as difficult as it is to play electronic music live, he makes it look easy and does it so well! The light show was entertaining and his band was great! I highly recommend you see him live, he's worth every penny!!

I saw James Blake as part of the Big Guava Festival in Tampa, FL in May 2015. As a long-time fan, I was so excited to finally see JB live, and it exceeded my expectations. He was joined onstage by a drummer and a miscellaneous guy (guitar, syth, etc.), and the combination was stellar. Hearing his bass lines on a subwoofer that puts mine to shame was heart-stopping. The set was only an hour but it was the best hour of the festival and truly an incredible experience. I really hope he comes back to central Florida; I'd love to see a longer set!

I had expected a good show, but James Blake more than surpassed my expectations. The trio was one of the tightest groups of musicians I have ever seen. Prepare to be surprised and blown away. Also, the sound was incredibly well managed.

James Blake is one of the most progressive and influential musicians of our time. He is precise, vulernable, and powerful. He rides the edge of control and abandon; creating flow, chaos, and a mirror of nature. He creates an environment that is other worldly and dream like. Best night of my life!!!

I expected a lot, and I was not let down. This man can not only write minimal yet gripping music, but he can pull it off live. Some songs were even better live then they are on the album. For example, "Lindisfarne" was sung with much more passion then it is on the album version. And of course, feeling that bass throughout your body supplies that euphoric feeling that just can't be replicated outside of a live music environment. In addition, Mr. Blake is pleasing to watch. He laughs when funny things happen. He doesn't take himself too seriously, even though his music is incredibly moving. He interacts with the crowd just the right amount. The band, too, were as solid as you can get. The quality of sounds these three gentlemen can produce in real time is absolutely astonishing. Don't pass up an opportunity to see them!

If you've listened to the latest album you won't be disappointed by this show. I initially assumed because of Blake's electronica background that many of these tracks would be performed with just drum machines, laptops, and synths, but James comes equipped with some really talented musicians at his side including a drummer who really blew me away with his ability to reproduce rhythms on a minimalist electronic drum set which I could swear were being played by machine. Blake himself was a great performer live. His unique vibrato and soft touch on voice was as beautiful as I imagined it would be. He also unveiled a few new songs for us. The energy of the show is chill, and there was a feeling of good will in the air, fostered by melodic quiet-loud-quiet progressions, and quaint British politeness.

JAMES BLAKE is a young guy with a beautiful voice and musical talent utilizing both in his performance at the historic Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco to a sold out passionately partisan audience. I had only heard of him and missed his earlier visit to San Francisco but was not disappointed by what I saw and heard. Very difficult to describe his type of music but I must say that the overall effect is mesmerizing. Twelve songs and two encore songs were an adequate taste of what young James Blake has to offer. Certainly an artist to follow.

Mr. Blake satisfied all the elements needed that night except the one only my chick can really help me with (I was forced to say that). Anyway, amazing show, a mix of Pink Floyd, some dirty garage dub-step and little Aaron Neville voice mod action that lends itself to a warm tasty vibration. Get some, trust me.

James Blake's show was unlike anything I've been to. Everyone there was experiencing something that is almost hard to put in words. The mix of his unique and beautiful voice with a super talented band and dope synthetic sounds were amazing. Not to mention the bass that literally vibrated through our bodies in the front rows. DEFINITELY a show you can't miss no matter what genre you prefer. I loved everrrry moment and would go again in a heartbeat. His passion and ease as he performs is just amazing.

Honestly, I was skeptic as to how James Blake would sound live, but his performance absolutely blew my expectations! His voice is exactly as it sounds on mp3, and the sounds (base, guitar, piano) are so much more powerful live. He was amazing--and I would see him again in a heartbeat!

James' talent is unquestionable. The show's simplicity was the key for me. Three musicians on stage each giving exactly what was required, contributing to a beautifully magical and innocent, yet still sexy collaboration. Not a minute too long or too short. And that drummer killed it! Fantastic show. First time for me at the music box. I'm inspired to return.

Amazing amazing night. The opening act Teengirl Fantasy was alright; that had some good sounds and interesting beats, as well as fantastic basslines. Overall they were okay, but seemed to lack all the finishing touches to their sound, and seemed encumbered with too much equipment to produce a coherent set. James Blake was AMAZING though, which more than made up for that. I've seen him before at a music festival but the set here was much longer, and even featured two encore songs. I'm very grateful I attended this concert. :)

The concert was really good, even the opening act was pretty good. I can't give it 5 stars because the crowd sucked. At one point, I looked around and it seemed like I was surrounded by tons of 14-16 year olds that had no interest in dancing or even swaying to the music. It's a weird thing to love the music but hate the crowd.

The set by Nosaj Thing was very mellow. There was minimal lighting and the music was pleasant. It set a nice introductory tone for James Blake. Jamrs Blake's set was a little more lively with a song or two that were significantly higher energy. I would venture to call the whole experience relaxing but that is not to say I was bored. James played a lot of his older music along with some newer titles. I just listened woth my eyes closed and danced along. The rest of the crowd was very relaxed as well. This had to be one of my favorite live music experiences. It was mellow but very enjoyable.

James blake was absolutely amazing--I'm not kidding when I say the guy does probably the best live performance I've ever seen. its just another level when it comes to live compared to recorded stuff. I got there at 9pm (show was at 8 pm with an opener) and james blake was just starting, so make sure not to get there too late. And it was just so packed. so, so packed. It was to the point where it was almost impossible to get anywhere into the crowd--I mean like, thousands of people. And people would keep talking during the silences in his songs, and get pissed off for trying to get a good spot.. much worse than any experience I've ever had at terminal 5, or a live venue in general. Unluckily. Because James Blake was so so good.

James Blake comes out on to the stage, sings a line into the mic and layers it to create a chorus of his voice. The crowd was already wild for this guy. He then adds the beat, the lights sync up and it quickly became some sort of a new genre the audience wasnt used to. I wouldnt say he is much of a lyracist, but his voice is remarkable. Nothing pre recorded, and he doesnt follow the structure of his song, he just uses the lines and beats from the particular song, and layers it in a new way, making it recognizable but also highly original. Nosaj Ting was also great, but I wish they gave him a light show like James had, it would have made it 10 times better. So good!

James Blake was even more fantastic and moving live than he is on his recordings and considering the quality of his records, that is quite a feet. Rich and complex. Moody and dimensional. Absolutely mesmerizing- you could hear a pin prick in the fabric of the air during the encore. The radical inclusion of afro beats during a hearty solo made the show culturally diverse. I danced, i cried, i laughed and grinned auper wide. James Blake is a great musician. The masquerade was a poor venue to see him in last night because frankly it's hard to see anything in the flat heaven room. The people were cool and eclectic, mostly respectful. Variety or the Fox would have been more apt so as to be able to sit and really appreciate the music: true dubstep electronic music played, not DJ'd, through atmospheric and deeply soulful folk song structures. Good tunes.

James Blake, who was influential in defining the post-dubstep genre, continues to innovate... the live show was significantly different from any of his album work, but in a really good way. I had reservations about seeing James Blake perform because his music is so heavily produced. I was proven wrong. The man is so talented. I assumed all of his production skills began and ended in the studio. Not only did he sing live, he played instruments and remixed his own songs live. I loved hearing live versions of songs from his new album as well as old favorites. I found it particularly funny (but also a little embarrassing) that he had to stop in the middle of his set to ask the audience to stop talking during his performance. I felt he was politer than he needed to be. It was the only hiccup, other than that, it was wonderful time throughout. I would definitely see him again.

This guy was incredible to see live and would definitely go back to see him again. Don't stand near the drunks or they'll completely kill the vibe.

Incredible use of visuals with the songs. James Blake knows how to get the audience pumped even while seated!

This was one of the best concerts I'd been to! James Blake sounds better in person than on recordings! He is truly talented and has one of the best voices ever!!! I will definitely see him anytime he is in concert anywhere near me! The guy (Moses) that he had opening for him was awesome too!
