Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin

In 2011, Rolling Stone listed Aretha Franklin as the No. 1 Greatest Singer of All Time, an honor that was long overdue in the eyes of her fans. Since she first hit the scene more than 40 years ago, she has been considered a legend and the living embodiment of soul music. Franklin’s musical and performance style combines a belty, powerhouse, mezzo-soprano sound with a charismatic, almost evangelistic interpretive style reminiscent of James Brown.

Two hours of non-stop fun. The Queen sang, danced, played piano, and preached. At times I felt she was only dancing and singing to me.

First time ever seeing the "Queen of Soul"- The best of the best, voice was like listening to a recording. Piano playing was a treat, and I fell in love with the orchestra director & the orchestra. Back-up singers fantastic and dancers entertaining. Well worth the raindrops!

I've been a fan of Aretha Franklin for many years, and had tickets to a show a few months ago that was cancelled due to health issues. I am so grateful that she was able to perform this time, and she was amazing! You would never guess her age or health issues based on this performance. Her stage presence is wonderful, the band was great. Her voice is beautiful. The backup dancers were also fabulous. The venue is also really nice (NYCB Westbury). It is small and intimate, and the stage is round so the audience completely surrounds the performers. The performers walked right by us on the way to and from the stage. An unforgettable experience!

Well worth my time and money. The Queen was into it and performed like the superstar that she is. She knew her audience wanted to hear the standard Aretha song and she did deliver. There were times when I thought the audio was not calibrated at its best. All in all, I am glad I was there.

I truly enjoyed this concert! Ms. Franklin's voice is still clear and strong, and stayed true to the sound of several hits that she made famous years ago. I appreciated her tasteful, yet brief tribute to Michael Jackson, and I also enjoyed the brief tribute to Dinah Washington. I was really glad that neither of those acknowledgements were long and drawn out, because I paid my money to hear Aretha sing her own songs! I was pleasantly surprised that she sang so many songs (approx. 20+), and that she only took a 10-minute break to change gowns. I had never heard of Michael Brock, but he did a nice job, too. My only complaints - I think the floor in the Fox Theater had been recently painted, so everyone's feet kept sticking to the floor. Also, I wished that they would have continued to sell the keepsake programs after the concert; there was such a crowd when we were entering the theater, that we decided to wait until we came out. Unfortunately, the counter where the programs were being sold was shut down.

Seen Aretha before. Whomever is the Director of the production really created a program that confused me. Samba dancers and people walking across the stage didn't seem to fit with what I expect from Aretha's other shows. Not enough favorites. Where were, "You make me feel like a natural woman" and "Spanish Harlem"?

This was truly inspirational, and unforgetable to see such a great artist perform. It has always been my dream to see the Queen of Soul in concert. Her voice and stage presence is totally remarkable. She woes the audience with her presence, style and sincerity. The connectedness she has with her hometown was quite apparent throughout the performance. Aretha came equipped with a huge contingency on stage. Full horn section, a string section, excellent band, wonderful back up singers. There were some moments when I got goose bumps - but overall I think a lack of confidence prevented Aretha from really delivering what she could have. Aretha is 67 - no one should really expect the woman to hit those super-high notes - her voice that night was more than fine. But I think she felt she should have been able to, and that stopped her from delivering the ballads that would have rounded out a lot of gospel. Sometimes having too much family in the front rows isn't a help.

How bad could it be at "The Fox"? Well, it was about as bad as I can imagine! How sad that the theater wasn't even 50% sold out! Unfortunately the sound was SO BAD that we couldn't hear Aretha's beautiful voice! I blame the sound mixer for that. He sat and did NOTHING the entire show. Bottom line, we left early.

The last time I saw Aretha Franklin perform live was at Cobo Hall in the Seventies. It was very memorable and she brought the house down. I was in my early 20's and had all of her albums. Know in my sixties I still collect here music. Last night s stellar performance allowed me to appreciate her even more. She worked just has hard as she did back then to captivate the audience with a variety of songs favorites that made us stand up or sing along. Her energy and humor made the show flow smoothly. It Was Great!!!

Naturally, she is amazing. Totally awe-inspiring and sounds every bit as she did years ago when starting off in Detroit. That said, much of the time you couldn't hear the words she was singing because the band/orchestra was so very loud. At first I thought perhaps it was just me that it bothered, but then my husband expressed the same sentiments and I overheard others seated around us saying the same thing She doesn't need a band/orchestra that takes up the entire stage with a complete brass section PLUS 3 drummers! Then there's he string section, the 3 pianist/keyboard players, percussionist and 4 backup singers (who were also excellent). The music was superb, but it's not worth the money when it drowns out the singer, considering she's the one we paid to see. All in all, I'm happy I had the chance to see her in concert, if only for the 4 songs where we could actually hear the words. Those 4 made the evening worthwhile. I can only imagine what it would have been like if we could have heard them all.

I have seen Aretha several times over the years hoping for this kind of show. In my experience Aretha has never connected with her audience the way she did at this performance. The orchestration was fantastic. When Aretha sat down at the piano and started playing she blew me away. Never did I know what an accomplished pianist she is. The show was excellent and she was fabulous. Backed by an orchestra full of horns and strings and back-up singers including Millie Scott made for an entertaining evening. Having gone to high school and college here in Detroit, I had seen Aretha at her very beginnings at her fathers church, at the Twenty Grand Etc. So part of the great allure was not only a chance to see and here her, but also to be back in the Fox for the first time in more that 55 yrs when I was a kid seeing movies there. The Fox still leaves me in awe. I procured a article where the Ilitch's restored it somewhere along the line, and a fine job they did. I was taken back to being a child again. Aretha never lets you leave without feeling good about the world, and she has mellowed to the point where she feels comfortable enough to banter with the audience and band members alike. Was it worth the money? you bet. Can't wait to be in the Fox again.

What an incredible concert!!!!! This was the third time that I had the pleasure of seeing Aretha in concert, and this was the best. She demonstrated all of her abilities as a musician and an entertainer. She was in outstanding voice, was personable with the audience, and played the piano with the same soul that you hear in her voice. The song choices included some of her most popular hits ranging from the beginning of her career to new material that will be released in the fall. She also paid touching tributes to Dinah Washington, B.B. King, and Michael Jackson. What made these tributes extra special was that fact that Aretha not only sang to them, but she also played the piano for these tributes with the same emotion that she put into them vocally. On "Freeway of Love", she added a gospel element, and for the final song "The Greatest Love of All", she sent a message of her appreciation for her audience. My personal favorite was her rendition of "As If We Never Said Goodbye" from "Sunset Boulevard". Vocally, she touchingly showed her gratitude to her fans from the Detroit area. Without hesitation, I would see this show again.

What should have been the concert experience of a lifetime was totally ruined by the Sound Engineer who cranked up the volume so loud that 3 days later my ears are still ringing. He should have realized that the audience was mostly middle aged & older & it was inexcusable to risk everyone's hearing like that. My husband & I had to leave less than halfway through when our ears hurt too much to listen anymore. Ms. Franklin's powerful voice was at times overwhelmed by the horn section & it was very hard to understand the lyrics due to the distortion at such high volume. All subtlety & nuance was lost. Although not as energetic as in her younger days Ms, Franklin still had plenty of soul. She had a full band with 4 backup singers & 3 dancers. Bitterly disappointed as we wasted a good deal of money & probably won't have another opportunity to see her live again.

Aretha Franklin has some amazing lungs. This was one of the best performances I have ever seen and I have seen dozens of concerts all over the world. She looked fabulous and I was not expecting the weight loss - so that was a nice surprise and to hear her health has improved significantly. She looked beautiful and was so kind to the audience to the very end. The band was outstanding. At the end people wouldn't leave, they kept going closer to the state even after she did her encore; R E S P E C T of course. And she came back out again just to wave and shake a few hands. Class act. I will see her again but definitely not at The Mann. Although the food was good at the Crescendo and the service was fine, they need to work on their parking situation. Horrible. The parking staff didn't know what they were doing everybody need to see a supervisor. It's a simple question where is guest parking - "well there should have been a spotter over there . . ." Really? I definitely wasn't feeling any brotherly love during the parking.

In what may be her final performance in Philadelphia, Aretha came to sing! Looking quite a bit slimmer and perhaps a little fragile as she walked to the stage, all concerns about her condition vanished once she opened her mouth. Singing with an intensity and power we haven't seen in recent years, Aretha sailed through her set list delivering crowd-pleasing hit after hit. Her voice was in top form displaying a wide range including the thrilling high notes she is known for. She showed off her vocal virtuosity with her signature runs and melisma. The crowd roared as she headed to the piano to accompany herself on "Brand New Me" and "My Cup Runneth Over." Highlights of the evening including the opening "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me," "You Make Me Feel Like A Nautral Woman," "Chain of Fools," "Sweet Sixteen," and "Respect." Aretha appeared to be enjoying herself and taking full advantage of being in great voice. I'm glad I got a chance to see her in this triumphant performance during her final tour.

We were seated in Orchestra B Center. Aretha can sure still sing!!. However, the band was so loud that she was overshadowed. In fact, it was so loud it was almost painful. Aretha was amazing. Although she appeared frail from her illness in frame size, her voice still iis a powerhouse! It's been rumored over the years that Ree-Ree barely talks to preserve her vocal cords. That is now absolutely believable! She was able to hit notes and have the breath to sing that quite frankly normally dissipates with age. My only complaint is that there were times when the band was just a little to loud and drowned her out once or twice but when she asked them to bring it down that fixed the problem.

A good performance by the venerable Aretha Franklin. Many of her old hits, and they were all loved by the crowd. We had decent seats as well, which is important as this is quite the grand venue. Disappointed that a " meet - n' - greet " was not offered, Miss Franklin did indeed receive some visitors after her performance, but only special guests who were able to snag a backstage pass somewhere. Also a disappointment that her staff as well as the venue's staffing gave Miss Franklin's fans the run - a - round when all they wanted was for her to sign some of their old albums of Miss Franklin's. And that when Miss Franklin finally did depart the venue, she was whisked away without even stopping for a moment to greet at least some of her avid fans who had waited in the exit area for a very long time, just to say a nice little " hello ."

On Friday evening, August 19, 2016, I experienced Aretha Franklin, her band, her orchestra, and her dancers perform at the Blue Hills Bank Pavillion in Boston, MA. Having this experience of Aretha Franklin, I now feel like I imagine Martin Luther King did when he gave his "I've Been To The Mountain Top" speech on April 3, 1968. I feel that my senses have tasted that greatest of graces that only rarely, if ever, makes its way into our days. The photographs I am posting here, while my favorites from the show, cannot do justice to this most beautiful of human beings. If you should ever have the opportunity to see her perform, I urge you to jump at the chance.

She was soooo much fun and interacted so graciously with the audience. If you have never seen Aretha, and even if you have, you cannot miss another opportunity to see her again (or for the very first time)! She was PHENOMENAL and the full orchestra complimented her perfection beautifully. She has lost quite a bit of weight and her energy level was through the roof! I have seen ReRe in concert 8 times (this was my 9th) and I will remember this concert for the rest of my life. IT WAS AMAZING, AWESOME, FANTASTIC--all that and a bag of chips, a pork chop, leg of lamb, side of beef.....Definitely worth every penny! Aretha @ Revel 3/15/14 What a great show! After several months of down time, Ree came back to the stage in one of the greatest performances I have seen in recent years. She had energy and commanded the stage as only Diva Franklin can! As you can tell by the pics Ree has shed some serious weight and in the end her stage game is off the radar....lol. The setlist ran like this. 01. Your Love Keeps Lifting Me (Higher & Higher) 02. (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman 03. Think 04. Something He Can Feel 05. It's Just Your Love 06. Chain Of Fools 07. Hurts Like Hell 08. I Came To Lift Him Up 09. Jump To It 10. I Will Always Love You 11. You Send Me 12. Freeway Of Love 13. Respect. Lady soul had a wardrobe change half way through show. She made her grand entrance like only she can in a nice tan/brown fur that she tossed off to H.B. She told a dog joke and shared stories of her early years and her connections to Philadelphia. We got the gospel on what Jesus did for her in recent months during I Came to Lift Him Up. She shouted and danced did her testifying for all to see. She had me shouting like a crazy fool! So emotional! She did some real great scatting on Its Just Your Love. She tickled the ivorys for I will Always Love You and You Send Me. Besides I Came To Lift Him Up, my fav was It Hurts Like Hell. I describe as melted butter covering all the popcorn. The song is just a perfect fit for Ree. She took the lyrics and delved in to them with the emotion and soul like only a lady of Rees experience could do. High notes/low notes/squalls all right there in this buffet of musical expertise! Show started 20 minutes late and ran 1 hour and 40 min! Gang she was on the one for real! Feeling blessed to have been in the Church of Ree this weekend!

Traveled from the UK to see her and wasn't disappointed! She certainly hasn't lost it despite being 71 years old!

I LOVE Aretha! I hope I am as lively and sassy as she is when I get to be her age! Her voice is amazing and I loved her emphasis on church, family and friendship. I also really appreciate that the comedian that opened for her was very funny using clean humor.

We were fortunate to see the Queen of Soul at the very top of her performing genius. From start to finish the show was spell binding as Re Re's wonderful voice filled the hall with its amazing range and versitility. With ease she went from ballards to upbeat; from soul to gospel. She seemed to enjoy every minute of the performance which made us, her audience, enjoy it even more.

Perhaps this wasn't Aretha's night, so soon after Whitney Houston's death. The crowd was lethargic at Radio City Music Hall. Aretha's legs were hurting, according to the press and she played few of her signature hits. I was hoping for a great show and this, sadly, was not a great perfomance.

This is my 7th time at one of Aretha's concert and I always enjoy her shows. She did an amazing job and looked beautiful. She did a nice little tribute to Whitney Housten and sang 'I'll Always Love You'.

Perfection! Aretha's performance far exceeded our expectations. We thought she might be reduced to some sort of cheesy Vegas, medley show, or something with lots of filler and not much of her on the stage. On the contrary she sang a very full set, her voice sounded top notch. There were no shortcuts. Whoever installed the sound system and ran the sound did a stellar show! I've never heard such great sound in that room! We were sitting in row R (in the back of the orchestra under the balcony overhang) and the sound was still so clean. The orchestra, gospel choir and back up singers were really solid. Aretha, given all of her health and years, still can sing, still can move and still can play that piano like a maestro. Her voice was beautiful and the set was gorgeous! Our daughter, 4 years, loved every moment. She was mesmerized.

Aretha was remarkable! Mixing the old with the new, she captivated the audience. To listen to her as I had in the 70s, I smiled to know that she has not "lost it." She remains the Queen!

This was the first time I have seen Aretha Franklin in person and I must say it was well worth the ticket price, she put on fabulous show. The live band was on point and "turned it out" when they did their version of Stevie Wonder's "Another Star" (while Ms. Franklin took a short break).

Great tiny venue with well thoughtout layout. Parking is simple, quick exit and free. The venue had a few beverages available and no significant lines to anything: food, bev, bathrooms. Only disappointment was no merchandise available. Otherwise a terrific time!

Awesome! She performed for at least 90 mins., only sitting down to "wear out" the piano. Aretha looked great; the Nashville Symphony was great; and as always, the Ryman is a great venue.

I must say Ms Franklin sang her heart out for the Nashville crowd and they simply went wild for her. The Ryman Auditorium was rocking and rolling with the Queen of Soul and the crowd show her the RESPECT she deserved. In the words of The Wife, "What a show".

Very expensive ticket for so few songs. Ms Franklin is a legend, however the show left much to be desired. Only excuse is ms Franklin was ill. We should have gotten partial refunds.

Aretha only sang eight songs. She took a sick brake during the show for about ten to fifteen minutes. The show lasted until around 9:30,maybe 10. She did not perform any of her top hits. Needless to say we thought she should have canceled the show.

Aretha Franklin is still reigns as the Queen Of Soul. Her voice remains in perfect form. The only complaint i have is that the venue did not have her concert "in the round" so consequently she performed and some of us had a side view while other saw her back the whole night.

Aretha put on a great show. She had my 87 year old mother dancing in her seat. I was disappointed that the stage did not revolve though. We looked at her left ear for most of the night, but we still had a great experience.

How lucky we were to see this American treasure in such a small venue! She has maintained her wonderful voice and spirit. She sang many old tunes. I was very impressed that when she took a very brief break she did her own primping. The orchestra was fabulous!!!! The backup singers were wonderful! What a marvelous gathering of talent!! Thank you.❤️
