Alice in Chains

Alice in Chains

Five years after their original frontman, Layne Staley, died of a drug overdose, Alice in Chains made an unlikely return in 2007. Surviving band members Jerry Cantrell, Mike Inez, and Sean Kinney recruited frontman William DuVall to join the group, first for some well-received concerts, then to go on tour. Next came a new album, 2009's "Black Gives Way To Blue," which got glowing reviews, entered The Billboard 200 at No. 5, and led to more shows with fast-moving tickets.

I thought it would be impossible to top off San Francisco, but NYC at The Manhattan's Center The Hammerstein did just that with Alice In Chains 8x better than expected. And I said EPIC and I'll say EPIC again. "EPIC"

A.I.C. Opened with a powerful Rain when I die and the never looked back. They pulled all the great songs from Dirt, Face Lift, Sap, Jar of flies, and even a song from their last album with Lane. I took my 15 year old soon to this show and he thought they sounded great. I know I'll catch some heat from some for saying this but the one thing I notice about the shows with William is how much fuller the guitar sounds with him playing rhythm and Jerry playing the leads. I noticed a difference between the 1st. tour with William and this tour, although he still sounds a lot like Lane it didn't seem like he was impersonating him like i felt he was doing in 07. The band seems to really enjoy playing live which was something they found difficult to do with Lane and you could tell they were having fun as the crowd was singing every word to every song back to them as loud as they could. 2 of the new songs seem like the fit perfectly with the old songs although I'm not sure if I'm sold on Acid Bubble the crowd seemed to react the same as I did. All in all if your a true A.I.C. fan and you get the chance to see them on this tour go with an open mind we all miss Lane and nobody sings with the same passion as he did but this is as close as it gets to the original.

Love Alice in Chains. They sounded fantastic. The new lead singer, Wm Duvall, is great at recreating Layne, yet has a unique quality all his own. They will do well and I can't wait to get the CD.

casually walked on stage, picked up their instruments on started playing rain when i die, awesome opener. the setlist was basically the dirt cd with a little facelift thrown in (love, hate love was a surprise and duvall pulled it off) and then three new songs check my brain, a looking in view and acid bubble.they also did nutshell and another surprise (sludge factory). seeing them perform the song dirt as an oncore was the icing on the cake for me. rooster finished the set and it was back to the car and back to the burgh and home by midnight. as always great roadtrip to cleveland.

Monster Truck opened the show. I had never heard Monster Truck but they were pretty good....and thats enough about that. The Alice in Chains show was a great show. It was a great mix of old and new music. Being in the theater kept the show "intimate"....not a bad seat in the house. One of my favorite parts was Jerry C.'s dedication to Mike Starr and played Nutshell. So much amazing music. And then the least favorite part of the show is.....well, when it came to a close plus they closed with one of my least favorite songs "Rooster". Overall, this is a highly recommended show.

Great night out! Not a penny wasted on this concert! Alice in chains did not disappoint. I saw them in 1997 in Kansas City with Kiss-they were great that night and with thier original singer but thy took it to a new level this time--I was pleasantly surprised with their new lead singer, hard to try to cover songs by such an iconic lead singer but it was on the verge of being better than...be it the venue or the impending weather that never happened, or just that that the band had gotten better!!! We had a great night out ! Took us from 47 back to 30 quickly!!:)

AIC - superb as always! Great stage and light show. All the classics and lots of new material. William, Jerry and the gang seemed excited to be in Cleveland and put on an excellent performance. The Instagram shot of them in front of the Rock Hall of Fame is worth checking out! Only drawback was the sound could have used some tweaking.

Over all....ok. I still miss Layne Staley. I video recorded 15 of the 18 songs that night. After studying the videos for a lengthy time, I came to this conclusion. I noticed something with the direct vocal track and the actual lip syncs. Not good. It did not fool me. They had back masking of Layne's voice. Yup! The microphone handling and lip sync trickery from William DuVall was not perfected or good enough to fool me. Sorry fans...but they are still living in Layne's legacy in order to attract the masses with the legacy songs. There was only one encore and Jerry was as cold as a bastard child who did not get his way that day. The sets were one after each other with no real interaction with the audience, It was too commercialized and sub-standard. There you go folks. You be the judge when you too see them. Actual Video never lies!

Great set. This was the first concert I have been to that the entire audience sang nearly every line of every song. One song was missing from this set was "Voices" but the 3 encore songs made up for it.

When Alice in Chains hit the stage at Foxwoods last Sat. night, it was readily apparent that they were firing on all cylinders. Led by singer/guitarist William DuVall and backed by guitarist Jerry Cantrell, drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Ines, they performed a superb cross section of their catalog ranging from old classics to newer cuts as as well. It was a fusion of raucousness with loud guitars and meditativeness on the part of the vocals all set against a constantly changing backdrop of swirling patterns on a large screen.

The opening act was Monster Truck which they started right on the dot (8:00 p.m.) and soon after they were done, AIC rocked on. Both bands gave an amazing performance. Front Row... Middle of the stage.. up close and personal! Alice in Chains with William Duvall was an incredible concert going experience. The small stage meant all of the band members were up close and personal (including the orally sprayed water from Bullet For My Valentine- ew). Great set, including fan faves Them Bones, Rooster, Man in the Box, Your Decision, etc. . . William and Jerry joked around about a black bra thrown on stage as true band mates, not long-time member and relative newbie. The guys were all smiles and energy during the show- even Mike between cigarette breaks back near the amps : ) At the end of the show, Jerry Cantrell was armed with a cup full of picks which were liberally distributed throughout the crowd.

I have loved Chains forever, who would have dreamed that they would still be rockin so hard? It was good to see Sean, Mike and Jerry together... and even as a die hard lover of Layne Staley, I was diggin the energy of William Duvall. It was incredible to see them still doing what they loved, and the crowd was wild for some AIC! Luck brought me to the 3rd row right in front of Jerry Cantrell after the show started and I even caught guitar picks! Best night of my life!! LSMS!!!

Absolutely one of the best shows I have ever seen.! We drove from K.C. to see them and weren't disappointed at all. We were considering traveling just to catch the show again! I was worried about how they would sound without Layne, but William DuVall (their new singer) did an amazing job!!! Halestorm was on the tour with them- I wasn't a major fan prior to seeing them live. After seeing them live I definately am. Their energy is amazing. Arejay (drummer) really stole the Halestorm part of the show for us. But the whole band was excellent!

I've been a fan for 20 years and finally got to see AiC. It's a shame that Layne Staley isn't with us any longer, but after this show I have to say that any William Duvall haters need to see him as the lead man. I thought he did agreat job of staying true to Staley's style while adding his own sound on their old stuff. The new work doesn't sound like their old stuff, but any band that has been around for 25 years is going to evolve or become stagnant. They rocked hard with a great combination of classics and their newer stuff. It was an awesome concert!

I will just start by saying AIC sounded great just like a year ago when I saw them at Stir. The band still sounds great. That being said, it did seem as if there was a weird energy to the show, and that the band was eager to get the heck out of town. I mentioned this to a few others, and they all said the same thing. They didn't do the customary walk off and return for the encore which didn't bother me. It just seemed like the whole show was rushed. 1:35 total time of the show. It seemed like last years was a solid two hours.

Concert acoustics were great and the venue was great. Alice in chains put on a great show for the little time that they were on stage. Concert start a little bit late and was over my 930 so they played for less than an hour and a half which is unheard of for any concert I've ever been to and I'm 40 :(. This is my sons first GA concert and only his second concert overall and we were both very disappointed in the length of time the band was on stage.

My boyfriend & I were fans of Alice in Chains back in the 80s when Layne was still around. When we saw the band had reformed with their new singer, we were a bit skeptical but William is a great front man for this band. While the music is harder, the band members are all pretty low key. The show we attended featured only Alice in Chains, no openers. The stage was simple so you really just saw the band, not tons of stuff to distract. They sounded dead on, both the music & vocals. There wasn't much talking, it was all about the music. I would definitely recommend any Alice in Chains fan go check them out.

I don't give out five stars like candy. This event earned each star! Halestorm... Volbeat... Bush... Alice in Chains... Yeah, there were more bands than that, but I pretty much stayed at the main stage, which allowed me to get to the front row for Bush and Alice in Chains. I was not disappointed! All four of these bands proved that they're not just studio bands. They can play live, and they can energize a crowd. Halestorm: What's not to love? A hot chick who can sing and play guitar. But it's not all about her. The band mixes well. The drummer was flamboyant and energetic! Volbeat: These guys have a future, and they have an appreciation for historical music. They played Johnny Cash, for pete's sake! Bush: Gavin Rosdale is the consummate frontman. Left the stage several times, playing in the crowd. Pointed to chicks and made them swoon. Enjoyed watching the guitar player sing with his guitar. It was obvious that he was one with his axe. AIC: I've waited 20 years to see AIC. I wasn't disappointed! They made a wonderful choice with William DuVall as the vocalist. On older songs, he does a great job of honoring Layne while keeping true to himself. On new material, he shows his own style, but you still know it's AIC. Perfect set list. Band was tight.

After 20+ years since seeing them last, I was a little skeptical, although their new music is great. I was completely blown away with how tight they were musically for only the 4th gig on the new tour. Cantrell still kills it on the guitar - maybe the grungiest ever. William DuVall, the new singer, was SO much better than Layne Staley and he harmonizes so well with Jerry Cantrell. He also plays the guitar on several songs, which adds a ton of sound. All in all, maybe the best concert I have ever seen, certainly in the last few years. I will go see them any chance I get.

and it was totally worthwhile. saw deftones in 2004 and this performance topped that one by a mile. mastodon was great and alice in chains, a group i never thought i'd be lucky enough to see considering they previously stopped touring when i was too young and broke to see them, was unbelievable. totally worth it!

I am not much of a Deftones fan. But I have to admit, they put on one heck of a show. It was a good opening for AIC. Mastadon? Eh, not my style. But again, a good opening for Alice in Chains. William Duvall is awesome on vocals. He covered Layne's songs flawlessly. This was definitely and evening to remember

We didn't go for Mastodon nor Alice in Chains... we went for the DEFTONES! They were amazing and I never wanted it to end. If you haven't seen them live.... GO NOW! They played the old school jams such as Engine No.9, Around the Fur and of course, played recent songs from Diamond Eyes :)

AIC was excellent - I never saw them in the 1990s... they might not be the most energetic performers, and their songs range from slow to very slow, but they sounded awesome and played some of the best tunes from their seminal albums: DIRT, JAR OF FLIES, and FACELIFT... would have liked to have heard even more of the new superb album BLACK GIVES WAY TO BLUE... lastly, Jerry Cantrell is an amazing musician, writer, and guitarist!

This was the first show I have been to down at San Jose State, and I was very impressed. I was already a fan of each band at this show, so making the 4-hour drive was a no-brainer for me. After all was said and done, it was definitely worth it. Mastodon opened her up. While I really like their musicianship, I must say the progressive style did not grab me in the live venue as much as I had expected. Part of it could be that I am not too familiar with the stuff on their new album. Nevertheless, they were good. The real surprise for me was Deftones. I have always liked these guys, but never been a HUGE fan. Their energy on stage was incredible. It really pumped the crowd up. The show finished with Alice. I have seen them before, plus they are one one of my favorite bands, so they could have a bad night and still blow me away. Needless to say, they did not have a bad night. Great performance from a legendary band. This is a great lineup guys, with 3 experienced bands. Don't miss it.

I was a little bummed out for the Deftones set cause the crowd where we were just weren't that into it. I love them and have seen them alot in the past. The sound was great and they were tight besides the crowd. AIC was the highlight cause they played for a long time and were flawless. We had a great time and rocked out.

I was very skeptical about what AIC would sound like without Layne. I didn't think they could pull it off. Nobody sang like Layne so I sorta thought it would be a sad sight. I was wrong. Alice in Chains pulled of an amazing show. If I were blind I wouldn't have been able to tell that Layne wasn't up there with them. They were powerful and played most of their classic songs I love - and maybe just 3 out of 15 or so of the songs they played were from their news (post-Layne) album. I'm definitely gonna see them again. Next time, I'm gonna tell others to come too!!

Despite being pushed BEHIND the stage ignoring my premium upper section tickets (due to section being closed???) the audio was good, the band sounded awesome. Walking out after a super long set, "Bad ass!" was all I said. Can't wait for the dvd...

Epic, better than the Paramount show and now in 3-D. Jerry Cantrel had a smile on his face the whole time. I was apprehensive because of the Key Arena's acoustics but it rocked and so did the crowd.

Just an awesome show! William did a great job breathing new life into AIC. I'm just glad to see them out on the road creating new music again! Keep it up boys! Kudos to Jerry and the gang for sounding like a million bucks. If you get a chance check them out... you won't be disappointed. One of the best shows I've seen this year. Nothing more to say - simply an awesome rock show! Kudos to Red Rocks for being so gracious to me and my son! The best venue!

...& on top of that, Alice in Chains brought us back to that 90's sound that is no longer around, so it was awesome! Red Rocks Ampitheatre is by far, the best venue that I've ever been to! Besides the view, the quality of sound was extremely clean. The open air was definately a good change! It wasn't too crowded & people that don't smoke, didn't really have to worry about that either...Personally, I don't know how you could possibly find a better place to be for a concert! Absolutely amazing time!

Alice in Chains was awesome! I saw them a few years ago at the Pageant when the new lead singer, William DuVall was first introduced. It was an unplugged version of the show. This show was everything and more that I would expect from a seasoned band like Alice in Chains. Their presence on stage was awesome, they interacted with the audience and they put on a hell of a show. I would definitely see them again.

To make it short and Sweet ..these guys are professionals - they do what they do because they can. If you like the "Music" of Alice in Chains - you will love the concert ! Unlike many bands that just can't bring it live.. AIC delivers on the goods in a hart felt professional and fun production.

By far the best concert I've been to... The deftones were a great opener for AIC. I have been waiting to see AIC for so many years and I finally got the chance to. And they definitely do kicked ass. Even if Layne wasn't there, William was great. And getting the chance to finally see Jerry Cantrell was a dream come true. The whole show was awesome! They opened to Them Bones and closed with Would. Unfortunately they didn't play Nutshell or Down in a Hole. But it didn't matter, it was still an unforgettable experience and will definitely be seeing them again. For all those skeptical about Layne not being there, dont be, still the same band from years ago and they still rock!!!

A cool night, was afraid the temp would dip down to low; never a fear the crowd was packed in tight with enough energy generated from Mastodon & Deftones to have things extremely warmed up for AIC. Jerry Cantrell was on his game as usual and vocally perfect as well. Mike Inez made it to our side of the stage a few times, he looked good and sounded great. Sean Kenny beating the heck out of his drums. William Duvall an excellent choice for vocals and co front man. How do you replace a legend (Layne Staley); you don't you just move on and AIC has made a great choice in Duvall who brings a differant kind of energy that is very likable with a Layne Staley sound. Great light show and overall fantastic night. Enjoyed Mastodon & Deftones; very high energy. If I had a draw back it would be the $9 beers (a little steep).

I was reluctant to be accepting of Alice In Chains after Layne passed... I'm not too much into their new stuff but everything they played was flawless and they are now my new favorite live show!!!! (Deftones were almost just as good!)

More energy than would have ever expected. I saw them back in the early '90s and they were rather disappointing... They have a new found energy with this new lead singer. The band just sounded great - Scottrade doesn't have the best acoustics, but this show was superb. Well worth the price of admission.

90 minutes including encore isn't really enough -- should be 2 hours. Aside from this, the band was really really good. Sound good enough (well, vocals were ... just part of the mix) for live -- the kick and the groove and all that makes AIC different was all there.

All 3 Bands, Mastadon, Deftones, and Alice in Chains were amazing live. I had never heard Mastadon prior to this show, but I will be looking up more of their music now. Deftones and Alice in Chains did not dissappoint. I liked this performance so much I could have sat through the exact same set right after this concert concluded.

I was really excited to see Alice in Chains since I love grunge and they are right up there with Nirvana. The concert started with the Deftones, which nearly left me deaf. All but 2 songs (Changes and some other quieter one) were terrible. There was no melody, and lots of out of tune screaming (very similar to Limp Bizkit). After surviving an hour of noise, Alice in Chains came out. Their opening was great. Duvall sounds similar to Staley, but doesn't have the same presence. Still they were great. Even the new songs were good. Everything was in perfect rhythm. My only complaint was that they didn't play very long. They did't play a lot of my favorite songs like Nutshell and Junkhead. I think they played for like an hour and a half. When they did play they put on a great show.

A no gimmicks, no bull...., raw Rock and Roll show. A heavy melodic, spacey onslaught of the senses. A true best of concert of the classics that made Alice in Chains one of the most influential and refreshingly new with an old dark, heavy and beautiful sound that had been missing in music for many many years. No one can replace the feeling and the voice of Layne Staley, but I think they found the right guy to try. An awesome throwback show that makes you move and cheer and at times makes the hair on your neck stand up. One of my favorites of all time, and I've seen hundreds of shows and bands in the last 30yrs. I am really looking forward to the next Alice in Chains shows......
