Waitress (NY)

Brought to life by a groundbreaking all-female creative team, this irresistible new hit features original music and lyrics by 6-time Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles ("Brave," "Love Song"), a book by acclaimed screenwriter Jessie Nelson (I Am Sam) and direction by Tony Award® winner Diane Paulus (Pippin, Finding Neverland). "It's an empowering musical of the highest order!" raves the Chicago Tribune.Inspired by Adrienne Shelly's beloved film, WAITRESS tells the story of Jenna, a waitress and expert pie maker who dreams of a way out of her small town and loveless marriage. A baking contest in a nearby county and the town's new doctor may offer her a chance at a fresh start, while her fellow waitresses offer their own recipes for happiness.

Waitress is a favorite movie of mine, so I was unsure if it would translate to the stage. It way exceeded my expectations and has been moved up the list as one of my all time favorite musicals. The music was wonderful and it was perfectly cast. We laughed and/or cried throughout the entire show.

The music and story were great. In a world where Hamilton dominates I would bet that this show could easily beat any other show for best Musical. It was really great to hear Jessie Mueller again after her outstanding work in Carole. Her voice is sweet with a large range. I would still suspect that her part could be a winner at the tony's as well.

Although I was looking forward to this play, I read a few reviews and I was afraid that I would be disappointed in Waitress. Trust me....it was sooo good! During the first act, my friends and I laughed so hard we were crying! This play contained all the elements of a most entertaining story. It was full of heart..... sassy, funny, smart and thoughtful....all at the same time.

My wife & I made a trip from Texas to go see Sara Bareilles in this Musical. It was amazing! This was her last day performing in this, and I can't tell you how great she & the cast were! The best thing was after the show we waited outside and they all came out to greet the fans. My most memorable moment was meeting her, and getting an autograph! This was by far the highlight of my trip to New York! Thank you, Sara for making this trip an unforgettable one, and for signing my Playbill! There are truly no words to describe how perfect this experience was! My wife & I love you!

First off, I have to admit that my wife and I are huge fans of Sara and Jason. I've bought everything I could find (music, videos, books) that Sara has created and we've seen both of them in Pittsburgh. When I saw that the touring company of Waitress was coming to Pittsburgh, I asked my wife if she wanted to go. She is not a big fan of musicals and I don't really care much for plays. However, the music was written by Sara and I had downloaded two songs (You Matter to Me and She Use to be Mine) from the cast recording. My wife declined until I mentioned that Sara was performing on Broadway. As I looked for tickets, I saw that Jason was also performing. That was all she needed. We were headed to New York. We picked the weekend but then found, after getting the tickets, that I misread things and Jason was not going to be there. Then, almost by magic, he extended his commitment and appeared on the Sunday matinee we attended. It was the huge highlight of a wonderful trip to New York - even my wife has said as much. We had seats 4 rows from the stage and it was worth every cent. When Sara broke into "She Used to be Mine", I had tears running down my cheeks. It was so much more powerful in the context of the play and in her impassioned delivery. The rest of the cast were no slouches either, especially Christopher Fitzgerald as Ogie and NaTasha Williams as Becky. A huge thanks to all for an unforgettable experience.

This musical has something for everyone. It s extremely funny and the music is just beautifully written and all the tunes are catchy and the ballads are heart wrenching but in a good way. All the actors have great storylines of their own and the Waitress band is awesome and so visible on the stage. It was well worth the money to see Sara Bareilles and Jason Mraz but Sara is the draw and star of this production.

I like to experience new shows as a NEW show and not knowing anything about the show. This was an easy to follow show, lots of great wording in the songs, funny moments, moments to make you cry and realize what life is about. Beautiful. Just loved the set, the staging, the voices.... could go on and on. Adored and can't wait to see it again. Acting was superb!! Thank you for all the actors who came out that night in the cold afterwards to thank us the patrons for being there and supporting. To those that didn't come out... a nice wave, a moment for us to take a photo and remember our experience (which costed quite a bit to get to NYC, stay in NCY and come to your show in NCY) would have made us a little more happier. You lost a follower is all I can say... those that did come out... THANK YOU again for talking, sharing, signing or taking photos. It was much appreciated and really shows the younger generation how to appreciate fans and to inspire them to be in this industry.

It was the second viewing of Waitress with Sara as the headliner and she was ... so pure and clean and BEAUTIFUL. Jason was quirky, his voice was perfect. Dawn and Becky cannot go unmentioned! Shout out to Okie and Old Joe- two very special characters- and two of my personal favorites. can t forget Carl, the comedic relief and Earl, the guy who becomes easy to hate (sorry earl). overall, AN AMAZING SHOW!! This show. This show was everything. I can t even explain how much it meant to me to fly to New York from Alabama and get to see this. The cast was perfect, the songs were on another level, it was hilarious and emotional at the same time and I am now a huge fan of Molly Jobe. I came to see Jason Mraz, and was not disappointed, but did not expect to fall so hard for the entire cast as well. Jason Mraz was an exceptional Dr. Pomatter. His beautiful voice gave the show that something extra. I am so thrilled with my experience and if I could, would have seen it 1000 times over.

The best part about Waitress was Christopher Fitzgerald. I was in tears. He added the laughs that Waitress needed. This show is not child friendly. It's adult subject matters and some inappropriate scenes. It was a good show. Some parts were a little slow and for sometimes it was hard to hear the lead, except when she was belting which was few and far between.

I d loved the movie with Nathan Fillion and Keri Russell and wondered how they would take such a dark comedy/drama and turn it into a musical. Figured it would be totally different. Shocker. The dialogue is almost 100% true to the movie yet the music, staging, pacing and of course the casting is a revelation! My 16-year old loves it as much if not more than me. Betsy Wolfe was beyond phenomenal! As really the entire cast was. The supporting actors actually brought a dimension to their roles lacking in movie. What a smart decision to give Ogie more to do. Christopher Fitzgerald was so loveable! Props to Caitlin and Maia too. John Cullum at 87 and playing Joe should be an inspiration to any age person. He sang the heck out of his numbers. So excited when I recognized him as the grumpy dad of Mike Heck! Ahhh. I just loved every minute of it.

I bought my tickets two months in advance and I'm happy I did. This musical was magical, especially with Sara as the lead role. Her voice is so pure and so perfect for the role. I couldn't even begin to imagine anyone else singing those lyrics. The supporting characters were equally as great. Becky (Charity Angel Dawson) is charismatic and sassy and her voice is incredibly powerful. Dawn is cute and nerdy with an infectious laugh. Ogle was DYNAMITE. His "Never Ever Getting Rid of Me" performance was definitely the highlight of my evening. And Sara is perfect for this role. Her voice alone brought tears to my eyes. It was just amazing. My first viewing of Waitress was on Tuesday, May 2, with the very talented understudy, Stephanie Torns, stepping in to give Sara Bareilles a break. It is such an all-round great play. The show was so much fun, and since I had traveled from Seattle and was going to be in NYC for week, I was determined to get another ticket, hoping to see Sara Bareilles perform the title role of Jenna. I am so glad I made a return trip to Joe s Diner on Friday, May 5! Sara's vocals were so touching and went straight to the heart. And she is a very talented musical, comedic, and dramatic actress! The supporting cast is outstanding as well. The extraordinary harmonies are still echoing in my head. Listening to the soaring vocals of Opening Up is my new anti-depressant. Sara gave the cast songs that fully expressed the characters and each cast member in turn performed the music to the highest possible level. My hope is that one day, Sara Bareilles gets the recognition she deserves for her musical and performance genius. IMO, Sara is long overdue for a major award. As I sat there last Friday night soaking in the wonderfulness of Sara's singing, I was incredulous to think that she wrote all of that beautiful music and lyrics AND she wrote the music and lyrics that all of the other characters were singing AND Sara and the Waitress Band created the orchestration. If you are in New York and want to see a funny, heart-warming and uplifting musical, then Waitress is your ticket!

The plot was largely predictable, but a heartwarming story and the performances by every person on stage are excellent!

Waitress is one of my favorite movies so I went in with high expectation and they were all blown away. This play is a phenomenal adaptation of the source material. I cannot speak highly enough of the cast. Christopher Fitzgerald and Kimiko Glenn will steal your hearts. The songs so lovingly written by Sara Bareilles will haunt you until you have to pre-purchase the cast soundtrack. By the closing scene you will be wiping away tears of joy claiming you just got a little dust in your eye. This is a must not miss play and while there do yourself a favor and pick up one of the mini pies.

The show was awesome! Amazing score by the incredible Sara Bareilles, excellent cast led by Jessie Mueller (but each performer is spot on), wonderful crew & set design that kept you engaged throughout, loved having the band on stage instead of in the pit, and the entire creative team brought all the parts & pieces together to make for a beautiful mixture of fun, melancholy, joyful, silly, deep, uplifting & heart-wrenching emotional roller coaster. Everything a perfect musical should be. Cannot recommend this show highly enough.

What's inside? A musical that's full of heart, lots of laughs and infectiously good music :) Universally enjoyable--I'd be really surprised if someone couldn't find at least one element to relate/connect to. My one critique is that the characters could use a little more depth and complexity so that the audience could be even more immersed and invested in their stories. Can't imagine that this is an easy thing to do, but it'd make the show just THAT much more wonderful, and I believe that this show will continue to evolve until it's absolutely perfect. It definitely has the heartbeat and the center of something AMAZING, but for me, it misses that mark slightly...and I wanted it to be there so bad. Some slower moments, deeper dialogue perhaps? Worth noting that Sara Bareilles is what brought me to this show <3

Jessie Mueller is the reason why I wanted to see this show. She's wonderful as Jenna. Christopher Fitzgerald as the nerdy Ogie is hilarious and almost runs away with the show! The supporting ensemble should be praised for their wonderful & memorable performances. I was most impressed with the colorful technical design of the production. I loved the cherry pie drop that acts as the main stage curtain and rotating pies on both sides of the stage proscenium. Set pieces and drops moved in-and-out briskly. Nicely done.

I had never been to New York prior to this trip, and my sole reason for going was to see this show. It was everything I was wanting and more! I'm a die hard Sara Bareilles fan, and was a little skeptic knowing I was going to hear others bring her music to life. Yet that's exactly what they did, and it was beautifully done. Jessie Meuller and the rest of the cast were incredible! I laughed, I cried, I ate pie from a jar! The show is a definite must-see!

Even though it has not been on Broadway very long, this show does not disappoint! I saw in Boston before they took it to NYC, and it was as energetic and fantastic with superb tweaks that make it the Tony nominated musical it is today. If you've seen the movie, the storyline is pretty true to the original, but it really translates well into a musical (great job Sara Bareilles!)

I took my mom to see this show on Mother's Day. I am so glad I did. Besides the fantastic cast and music by Sara Bareilles (who I adore), the storyline was just beautiful and demonstrated the strength of the bond between mother and daughter. I honestly couldn't have picked a better play to take my mother to.

Jesse Mueller knocked it out of the park, as did the entire cast. The set was beautiful, and fun. The actors sang their way through complex roles, juggling emotion, action and lyrics impressively. Casting was perfect - from lead to comedic support roles. Sara Bareilles's songs made this a very special production. And the cast delivered the songs so well that we enjoyed hearing them do them as much as we love hearing Sara sing them herself (which is an experience not to be missed).

I want to preface my review by saying that I was in the last row of the top level of the theater. Nonetheless, I still had a wonderful view of the musical from my seat. The theater feels cozy, but not like I was being suffocated by the number of people that were in the theater. The theater was well lit and I didn't have trouble reading the program or seeing the stage (as I previously mentioned). The musical itself was absolutely fabulous. Katherine McPhee is such a star and Erich Bergen is that cute, dorky doctor that we have all met. The music is so catchy and definitely sounds like Sara Bareilles, and because of that, I always seem to have one of the songs stuck in my head now. Highly recommend!

Went to see the show to see Katherine McPhee. Unfortunately her Dad passed away. The cast was amazing and the show was wonderful. Cast members from Scandal and Madame Secretary made the show extra special. I would not recommend the show for kids under 15.

We have followed Katharine since American Idol,Smash and more. We changed plans to squeeze in play while in NY and shelled out $400 just to see and hear her! So disappointed there was a fill in for her, however stand in sang her heart out. Story was funny and we were fully delighted with the play and all performers!
