Merle Haggard

Merle Haggard

For over half a century Merle Haggard has been a champion of the misunderstood, the outcasts, and yes, even the outlaws. Forging a new path because the one Nashville had charted was too polished and removed from real life for his liking, Haggard and his Bakersfield brethren (including Buck Owens) were the forefathers of the alt country movement that took root in the '90s. In fact, fans inclined to buy tickets to Wilco or Ryan Adams would find themselves right at home alongside fans of more traditional country at a Merle Haggard concert, connecting with the man who once described himself as an "Okie from Muskogee" - an uncompromising truth teller who never turned his mind or heart away from the working class. While the last of the Country Music Hall of Famer's staggering 37 No.

This tribute concert was an amazing event. Starting with W. Earl Brown's emceeing job, through the opening number performed by Merle's son Ben right through the outpouring of artists signing what is Merle's best known number, the show was everything it was hyped to be and much much more.

I know that Merle has been ill, which is probably why he only performed for approximately 45 minutes, but 'Last of the Breed' was a much better performance. I was a bit disappointed after looking forward to it for so long. It will not deter me; however, from seeing him again in the future. I pray that his good health returns. I hope that next time, I am allowed to take pictures.

The show / concert in Little Rock was very comfortable. The venue was good, the sound was good, the crowd (big) was good. It was certainly worth seeing, and we will go again if the distance allows. Haggard can be quite funny, although he spends his time now playing the hits that he thinks everyone wants to hear. He is probably right. Haggard can do a lot of impressions of other artists.

The Merle Haggard was the best show I have seen in a long, long time. The seats were great and everyone seemed to enjoy the intire night. I love the Stafford Centre. Ticket Master made it real easy to buy my tickets (Thanks.) There is not a bad seat in the house. Nor, were there any traffic problems in or out of the parking lot.

For many longtime listeners of country music, today's country radio is considered bland, lacking the emotional vocal performances, traditional backing and meaningful songs that made country music a popular genre. On June 7, Merle Haggard turned back the clock and gave the Robinson Center Music Hall crowd exactly what is rarely heard while twisting the radio dial today. With jeans, a black hat and a black Western jacket, the 72-year-old music legend strolled on stage, opening his show with "I m a Lonesome Fugitive. Without interruption, he followed with "Silver Wings and Big City. From performing his classic ballad "Today I Started Loving You Again" to displaying his fiddle skills on "I Had a Little Gal to a rocking rendition of "Honky Tonk Night Time Man, Haggard was in good form throughout the evening. His comments and stage mannerisms indicated he was having a good time during his first Little Rock appearance in nearly two years. Haggard was born near Bakersfield, Calif., in a home that was built from an old railroad refrigerator car. His youth was plagued by multiple run-ins with the law. At age 20, he was arrested for robbery and spent three years in San Quentin prison. By 1962, his much publicized past was behind him and he was performing full-time as part of the local club scene in Bakersfield. Three years later, he signed with Capital Records and his remarkable recording career was off and running. In Little Rock, Haggard gave the audience a wide sampling of tunes, ranging from his days as country music s top performer to some of his more recent recordings. In all, the Country Music Hall of Fame member treated the crowd with such selections as "I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink," "Are the Good Times Really Over," "The Way I Am, Mama s Prayers, Back to Earth, Swinging Doors, Old Man from the Mountain, Sing Me Back Home and Mama Tried. Haggard is known for spontaneously performing songs in his shows as opposed to relying on a regular set list. If you followed him on tour, you would likely hear a somewhat different show on consecutive nights. Some fans might have left disappointed that he didn't perform "That s the Way Love Goes, while others might ve questioned his inclusion of a brand new song, Love Is Always Pretty When It s New. However, such tunes as "The Way I Am and Going Where the Lonely Go were pleasant surprises. The Strangers, Haggard's 10-piece band, were stellar. The group included his 16-year-old son, Ben, on lead guitar as well as harmony vocals from his wife Teresa. Also, one of Haggard s older children, Noel Lee, served as an opening act. Haggard closed his one-hour performance with his signature Okie from Muskogee. Judging by the loud applause and standing ovation, Haggard proved that age isn't everything and some veteran artists are more than capable of entertaining large audiences and headlining major concerts.

I love Merle Haggard. He is absolutely the best. I actually got down on one knee on the front row at this show and proposed to my girlfriend while Merle was singing " The Way I Am". She said yes. We got a big ovation. Merle didnt notice us. On the other hand. I could tell that Ol Merle was feeling real tired and didnt really feel like playing. He only played about 45 minutes. I have seen him several times and this wasn't a great show. I think he needs to rest up awhile before doing any more shows. I am not upset with him but I would have liked him to play at least an hour and a half. We paid a lot of money and deserved to get our moneys worth. If his health isnt up to snuff then he needs to heal on up before half assing a show. That being said. I still love Merle and I will still go see him every chance I get.

The Hag started out slow but finished with a nice flow with help with his friends. His young 16 year oldBen can pick a mean guitar and theTravelers kept up with the changing songs without a hitch. The Hag never missed a line or a note and transitioned between the fiddle and guitar with moves a younger man would envy. The Hag still has IT!

On July 8, in Sioux City, Iowa, we enjoyed the "best of the best." We knew Merle Haggard had fought the cancer battle; so we didn't know what to expect. He came on stage and the audience gave him a standing ovation before he sang one note! He sang old songs, new songs--many that he has written. His guitar playing was stellar! He appeared to gain energy as he performed and perform he did for a full 90 minutes--amazing!! His band of "Strangers" is made up of multi-talented musicians--including his 16-year-old son. Haggard and Company ended the concert with a rousing "I'll Fly Away", leaving the stage to another standing ovation.

Just saw Merle Haggard last nite at the Sioux City Orpheum. What a show! Merle's voice is still perfect and he put on a wonderful show. He sang many of his original hits, new songs as well as a Johnny Cash song. His band is a stellar assortment of musicians with a lot of talent. Merle's 16 year old son plays lead guitar...every time Ben took the stage to play you could see Merle just light up and see how proud he was of his ultra-talented son. Great show.

What a great evening! Was good to hear old songs so well done by the 'Hag' and his cohorts. Sure enjoyed watching the older fellas do their work and enjoying it so much. A comment about those who work at the Orpheum. We've always found them to be extremely pleasant and helpful. Last night, my knee(replaced twice) was really bothering me as I didn't have room to stretch it out. At the break, I asked a lady if we could move where I could do that. She said we could and we were able to sit in the chairs near the entrance on the Mez level. How I did appreciate it. Thanks again for bringing such quality entertainment to Sioux City over and over again.

At his age and with everything he has gone through in life, Merle Haggard's concert in Sioux City was the best of the best. I have seen many stars and concerts, and Merle's concert was an example of real American country music. He sounded great and looked like the icon that he is. His "beer hall" band consisted of first-class musicians with the maestro leading the way, the sound quality was excellent, and everything came together in an appealing manner. My hat is off and I am standing in respect of Merle Haggard.

First off, I give this concert a 5 star but TicketMaster keeps switching it to a 4 star.... I've been to many big name concerts and Merle Haggard is hands down the best concert I've ever been too! My husband and I listen to old concerts all the time wishing we grew up in the era of all the country legends. There was a good mix of generations. It's great to see people in their 20's like me who realize good country music still exists. Not many musicians can pull in a crowd with ages ranging from 20's to 80's+. Merle sounded the exact same as all the recordings and had the same energy! He's funny, entertaining and man what a musician! The crowd was really into and it was so fun. He didn't even play half his songs but when you're the Hag there is no way you can play all your hits in one night. I was amazed at his energy and how funny he was. Very mezmering and I'm always captured by his sincerity. We're already checking his tour for 2016 so we can take our parents! Absolutely amazing! They just don't make them Merle anymore. Also, of all the venues I've been too (bars, big arenas/stadiums, outdoors etc.) the sound quality and mix was the best in the Theatre.

I've seen Merle Haggard and the Strangers four times in various states. I used to think that he would put on a better show for the folks in the south, but this show was the best by far. He was very energetic and funny on top of playing his songs perfectly. The audience was enthusiastic which obviously fueled the band's energy. His new album with Willie Nelson debuted at #1 which had him smiling ear-to-ear. I still think his son Ben should sing when he does Pancho and Lefty. Scotty has a great voice, but it doesn't work well with Merle's gritty style. I may be a little biased, but the Hag is a legend and you shouldn't miss out when he comes to town next year. NJ loves you Merle!

Merle Haggard, Everyone knows him. He was late arriving, but most of us didn't care. One of his relatives got up there and performed as an opening act. He has his wife and youngest son are in the band. This is one of those concerts you don't want to miss, not to be crass, but at 77 years young, there is not a lot of touring left for this Icon in Country Music. I love the Florida Theatre and I loved the show. He came in with a ball cap and dark shades, not taking them off until the end, so for pictures (and fashion) notsogood, but he is Merle Haggard, so 'nuff said.

My wife is a huge Merle fan, so I took her and her friend. It was a really good show. Her friend's Dad is a huge fan too, but recently underwent treatment for a rare cancer. He had an album he was hoping Merle would autograph. We talked to his son, Noel, about it. At first, we thought it was going to be impossible, but a few minutes later, Noel ran out to us and took the album in. We had to wait until after the show to get it back. Her Dad was ecstatic that Merle accommodated his request. Not only was it an awesome performance, there are still genuinely good people that influence their fan base in a positive way!

Chris Janson was an amazing opening act, and what an energetic contrast to the monotonous sound of The Hag. Truth be told, apparently I haven't listened to Merle Haggard much, since most of his songs were not familiar to me, though the enthusiasm and sing-along of the sold-out audience, which was clearly made of Haggard fans, was uplifting. As with so many concerts, I had trouble hearing enunciation of words to songs, so the distinguishing points of Merle Haggard's songs were lost to me, and his melodies tend to be much the same from one to the next. Couldn't make out Janson's words either, but at least he provided variety in tunes, instrumentation, activity on stage and personal interaction with the audience.

Was a little worried that by now Merle voice may not be as good as he used to be. Some people need to retire as they get older. NOT MERLE! We were so happy to hear him at his best! Talked enough with the audience to feel intimate, but really connects when he sings his hits. I have missed seeing other legends, but am so glad I went to see Merle. I give this a 5 because it was an honor just to be able to see a legend like Merle. I would do it again in a heartbeat. A very satisfying selection of songs from his career. Pulling out Folsom Prison Blues was a great treat. Merle's voice didn't sound strong to me. Guess that is what happens when you are in your 70's and lose part of your lung. I felt like the band held back to not overpower him. The only person that didn't hold back was the sax player. Holy crap he came on strong every time, which was exciting to hear, but only highlighted how much the others were not going full out. Merle did still sound like his old self when he went into the lower register of his voice. Magic. Merle was funny and vulnerable and honest about getting older. I loved how he said, "most people my age are either here or under special supervision somewhere". It was bittersweet knowing that Merle probably doesn't have much more time to perform. It reminded me of watching the Johnny Cash video for 'Hurt' knowing that Johnny wasn't going to be with us long either. Merle's songs about relationships sounded more like reflections on his relationship with the audience as opposed to breaking up with a lover. Again, bittersweet but powerful. A great, rare treat.

Performance was awesome. I just have two complaints. First and foremost, When a perisn pays their hard earned money for a performance, they obviously like the artist and want to hear their most played and hit songs. Merle's performance was awesome except he didn't play most of his songs he is known for. Secondly and most important, he didn't actually play more than a little over an hour nor did he come back after he left the stage. When I pay approx. $150.00 for two tickets, I do expect more than an hour to hour and half show. Thirdly, his wife; who was introduced as his harmonizer, seemed nothing but a stand ornament to me. She sang just a bit of one song. Would I go back to see one of his shows?? The answer is no. I do understand that he is in his seventies. However; and I am a huge Merle fan, but in all honesty, if an artist is too old to perform more than a little over an hour, than he or she needs to give it up. Thank You

Obviously, at 76 and 77 these guys have lost a little bit, but it was great fun to hear all the old songs, some of which I had forgotten about until they started singing, and the words came right back to me. First time to attend an event at the Swiftel. Facility very impressive. Crowd moved at a steady pace....Local Lions club ushered concert attendees to their seats swiftly. After a short break between opening acts and featured, M. Haggard appeared and what can I say.....he was superb. We have seen and 'not seen-but should have' Merle for over 35 years and what we notice is his 'mellowing' with age. He still has the chords, vocal and guitar, he converses with crowd and puts on a show that lingers for hours on your mind.

Shooter Jennings opened the show;good set, but short. a mix of cover songs by dylan and others but some Shooter songs. Only 6 songs though. Then was an newly signed artist The Mathis Brothers to Hag Records, not bad... they played with the Strangers. They played cover songs by Cash and Marty Robbins etc (traditional country). Merle was amazing! Still a very Good guitarist and fiddle player. Vey funny as well, made some good jokes. I feel very lucky to be able to share the music of this legend with my kids, 11 and 12. Merle and his band "The Strangers", are the best Country folks to ever take the stage. I realize those are some pretty strong words, as there are a lot of the old timers that were excellent as well, but Merle is far above all the rest. My son and I saw Merle and his band at the Snoqualmie Casino last year, and nobody went away disappointed. God Bless you Merle, and thanks for sharing your extrodinarly talent though all the years. See you at the Emerald Queen on April 5th. This time I'm in the VIP section....yipeeeee!

Omg, he was hilarious, and sounds great!!! The only problem was the concert didn't last long enough. :( it was only an hour :( other than that, if you love country music and love or even like Merle Haggard, it's a must see event!!!

Tonight I saw a true legend, Merle Haggard. No lasers lights, no smoke, no dancers, no props, just some of the very best country music ever written and recorded. All played by the hands of a master. As far as I'm concerned, everyone in attendance got their money's worth, and then some.

My mom absolutely loves Merle Haggard and I grew up listening to his songs so I bought us tickets to go see him last month in Deadwood, SD...IT WAS AMAZING. She absolutely loved the entire show and so did I. We had amazing seats, two rows back from center stage, and just an all around awesome time. I loved that security kept fans from gathering below the stage so our view of the show was great. Gotta admit it was mildly entertaining to see the fans trying to beat the security guards to the stage to snap a quick pic then turn around and run before security could catch them. Good times, good times.

Most of the music was a review of the "best of" variety but how bad is that? My seat was in the balcony, but front row so visibility, although distant, was good. The sound was great and the band was on form. The lead guitarist was especially good. Major distraction for me was the hooting from the audience which has apparently become part of the concert scene. Go crazy after a song to show appreciation but not during a song and especially not as often as every verse. These guys are not getting any younger but they still can make some pretty noise of their own. Don't miss 'em.

I have been to alot of Mere Haggard's concerts over the years and he just keeps getting better and better. This concert was exceptional, the crowd was into every song that Merle sang and was singing with him, me included. If Merle Haggard was here in Ohio somewhere tomorrow, I would buy a ticket and go!! Awsome concert Merle hope to see you again in the near future!

If songwriting were an Olympic event, Merle and Kris have brought home the gold more times than Michael Phelps and Mark Spitz. Their music swims around in your head, lap after lap, and never tires. They carry the torch that lit the fire that made country cool.

Well I got the tixs for a Christmas gift for my husband, HUGE fan. I just wanted to see the legend myself didn't really expect much due to his age and all.......WOW what a total surprise. It was one of the best shows, he sounded amazing. Tommy said better than 10 yrs ago when he last saw him. The house was packed and what a rowdy crowd, too many standing O's to count and constant applause. Mixed age group too, old young and all ages in between. Lot full of Vettes Benz Harleys Trucks - I say HAG FOR PRESIDENT, RubyRed

Merle still has it. He kept the audience entertained. Kruis is still that raspy singer, but kept the audience happy. It was a great concert by both of them. Merle can still play guitar and the Strangers backed him as usual very well.

Took my 28 year old son to see Merle and Kris. His tastes in music are quite different, but he thoroughly enjoyed the show. Merle brought his full band this time (we also saw their last show in April 2009) which added more depth to the renditions of his early work. No encore, but hey, the guys are both pushing 75 and they played for an hour and three quarters. Kris was gracious enough to hang around his bus after the show and chat with fans. Audience was respectful and sound and sight lines were good. I would have enjoyed a bit more audience interaction from both, but set list was long and both did most of their best work from their early careers. No way I'm giving these two guys less than 5 stars.

Merle Haggard sang many of his hits and was great! His Band was wonderful! Even had Jeff Cook from Alabama playing guitar. Jamey Johnson was more responsive to the audience than when he was in Nashville with Willie. He had a large fan base in Huntsville where he performed for 1 1/2 hours with some good songs

Am a sideline musician for over 40 years. Understand the drummer was held back alot. However, for god sakes give him toms and a bass drum. Believe me, you can still hold back and yet give a full drum sound - it would dynamically add 80% to the all around sound. If anyone, Haggard should know this!

What an unbelievable honor to have listened to these two men sing and tell stories. Kris, I'm so sorry you're fighting a cold. No offense to The Hag, but it was Kris I had come to see the most. I grew up listening to the greats, Hank Sr, Johnny C, Merle H, Conway T, George J and the list continues, but Kris... I found you in my early teens in the early 70's and have loved you since my first 8 track of yours, "Silver Tongued Devil". I have all your records and would absolutely LOVE to shake your hand one day. The venue was fantastic. The concert was surreal. Again, it was an honor to be in both of your presence. Two of the GREATS!!!

I'm not even a Merle Haggard fan-I was only going because of the artists scheduled to appear, and I have to say I enjoyed it more than I expected. I didn't know most of the songs, but not many people can say they saw Willie Nelson and Keith Richards sing a duet! It was a nice tribute to an artist that influenced many people that I am a fan of. The venue needs to work on getting people into the venue efficiently and on time! This has been an issue ever since they added the metal detectors. I'm all for safety, but they need to look for solutions to make this work. Having hundreds of people trying to get into the venue and making them late for the start of the show is really unacceptable. Thank goodness I'm one of those people who get there early.
