M83

M83's "Midnight City" was one of the most anthemic songs of 2011, ending up at the top of Pitchfork's year-end list and propelling album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming to Top 40 chart positions around the world. The band's subsequent concert tour gave ticket buyers a close-up view of what makes them an international success — namely, a deep catalog of polished songs, a laser and light show that blows all audiences away and the infectious stage presence of founding member Anthony Gonzalez. If there's one word to describe M83's vibe, it's optimistic; and whether it's the band's exhilarating anthems or their danceable synth-based instrumentals, you'll definitely walk away feeling good. "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming" was their breakout, but seeing them live puts them over the top.

Saw them in Central Park, NYC several years ago and they were 5-STARS!!! Traveled all the way to FRISCO to see them again. Huge fan of their older music...not a fan at all of their newest stuff - including their latest album. Unfortunately it was their latest album they played at the Bill Graham... wished they had played the classics that made them famous. Still an overall good show - - will always love them and see them live when I can snag tickets!

Truly one of the best concerts I've ever attended. Almost brought me to tears it was so beautiful and so true to my experience listening to the music at home. But better!! One minute I was dancing, the next I was too awestruck to do anything but stare. I cannot wait to see M83 live again!

There are plenty of bands I would love to see, and MANY of them do not tour the U.S. very often, if ever. So when I heard M83 was playing the Glass House in Pomona, I jumped at the chance to go, especially considering it was at venue with ample parking and little in terms of freeway congestion. It's hard to find a decent venue when you live in between L.A. and San Diego, as most bands don't tour the areas between. The opening DJ (James Yuill), was a great showcase of an up and coming talent, as well as a stand alone show in itself. M83 was great as well, and performed hit songs that the crowd was expecting, unlike some more jaded talent *cough*radiohead*cough*....It was an awesome concert, now if only the Glass House's talent scout/scheduler could get more acts of their caliber.

I've enjoyed M83 on record since the release of shoegaze keyboard epic "Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts" in 2003, but this was my first opportunity to see the group live. Anthony Gonzalez is famous for crafting towering, surging songs filled with electronic textures and oversized emotion, all of which was realized live, as well as the pop/rock chops that he has honed with the release of his last album, 2008's "Saturdays = Youth." The show never dropped in energy, from the opening trio of laptop-based songs to the full band renderings of material from the two most recent albums. In fact, the only substantial complaint I would have about the show was the lack of any material from "Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts." However that complaint pales when all that was performed came to life with zeal and a truly musical sensitivity; for a band so skilled at building to heart-rending climaxes, Gonzalez sure does know how to add the smallest electronic flourish at just the right time. The show reached its peak during the encore performance of full-blown rave up track "Couleurs." Unfortunately, a confrontation between the Wexner Center stage crew and Gonzalez following a disagreement over fans climbing onto the stage did distract from the palpable, dancing energy of the finale, but I left the show feeling alive and energized over the heated atmosphere. For those 10 minutes (approximate), the energy and spontaneity of punk collided with the precision and animation of electro, and it was a very fine moment indeed.

Really enjoyed the opening performance as well as M83. Venue lacked the environment needed for the type of music being performed. Seeing M83 live gave me a different lsitening perspective than when I have listened at home or on iPod. Really felt the energy of the music and fully appreciated the dancability of the music. Definitely worth seeing live.

I thought the sound was poor. I could see the potential, but the levels were out of whack, particularly the percussion. The drummer was placed behind a sound wall, presumably for control, but the result was muffled percussions that completely took the edge out of most songs.

The show went very smoothly, and was very good until the ending. Gonzalez got into a confrontation with the Wexner center director, which made things rather tense for both the crowd and the staff. It seems that the staff should have told the band that the stage they were playing on could not hold the extra weight of crowd members before the show, but I also think Gonzalez should not have reacted as violently as he did.

The music was amazing, their sound definitely translates well to live performances. He really knows how to connect with the crowd, and after inviting people to dance on the stage with him, exchanged words and blows with the event security guy. Hilarious, entertaining, and definitely one of the best concerts I've been to, and I've seen alot.

Mezzanine is a cool spot. It's in a crap neighborhood with some sketchy people. But the club itself is top notch and intimate enough to really enjoy live music. The sound system has to be one of the best in SF.

I'd like to think that I go to many concerts, and I like to have a mental list of my top 5 best concerts I've ever attended in my head. M83 currently still takes the cake. I was very lucky to see them as the first artist to perform at the grand opening of the White Oak Music Hall in Houston. It was the perfect night. It was outdoors, cool weather, awesome lights, and great music. It was so surreal to hear all of M83's amazing songs live. I was dancing and jumping the whole night, and for the slower beautiful songs I couldn't help but just sway to the music in awe. If you ever get a chance to see M83, DO NOT miss it!

If you're into a lead singer that has has no stage presence, and takes zero liberties with the way it was recorded, then this show is for you. If you still choose to go after this review; keep your eyes stage right (left if you are looking at the stage). The bass/guitar player easily had the most stage energy and actually made it look like he was having fun. PS - what kind of an act has no opening act? (Saving money?). No way to warm up the crowd. The lead singer had to prompt the crowd to stand up 2/3 the way through the show. You know it must be boring if it requires the band to TELL the audience to stand.

From the combination of amazing lights in different colors and strobes, to the meaningful and upbeat lyrics, and to the emotion that poured from this once in a lifetime band, there was no between of either a cry fest or a giant dance party. Their music feels like they're creating a universe in front of you (or inside you?), and the light show reflected the energy of each song perfectly. The music is electronic-y, but there was a bare minimum (a complete absense?) of backing tracks, and the sound was huge and clear on every frequency. Every time you look they're wielding a different manner of future-instrument and rocking their faces off the whole time. They even nailed the Steve Vai guitar solo at the end of Go! Solid show. Recommend.

M83 is amazing, been a fan for a long time but the acoustics inside were bad for such a layered sounding band. The music overpowered the vocals. They should of had it outside. The band was great, though. They would have sounded perfect if not for the acoustics. I fear for the younger generation, the entire audience (besides the front middle) stood completely motionless/emotionless the entire concert. Bizarre.

M83 played with great energy. The instrumentals and vocals all sounded extremely crisp. I wasn't sure what to expect for a live performance based on their electronic style, but I was very VERY nicely surprised. Live sound was much better than their recorded stuff, which shows that they truly are a group of great musicians. Only reason I am not giving them a 5 star is because they only performed for about an hour and fifteen minutes.

Really loved seeing M83 at Civic Theatre. The opening act Yacht was great! Got to hear music from multiple albums including my favorite song by them, "Dystopia". Yacht was the perfect opener! Then when M83 came out, they were unbelievable! I heard EVERY SONG I WANTED TO HEAR, including my 2 faves Midnight City and Wait!!!! I was right up front so I got great pics!! The venue was smaller and more intimate. I really loved that! You can see the show easily from anywhere in the building! I went up to the balcony at the end, and the view was great even from the back by the bar. Such a great show! I purchased a vinyl by Yacht and the new M83 record. Yacht signed mine! M83 put on an awesome event! Their music was amazing, and, in my opinion, better in person than on the albums. Was thrilled to see M83 on the eve of Coachella in such an intimate and cool venue like The Fox Theater in Pomona. Couldn't beat the price of the ticket for two bands. Big Black Delta opened and they were good and set the vibe for the rest of the night. Then Anthony Gonzalez and crew came out and the air crackled with energy and major bud. The sound and light treatments were stunning and kept the senses stimulated and righteously entertained. He seemed as excited as the fans were and kept thanking us! That kind of excitement and humility is rare and engenders a bond between the band and audience that makes for such a memorable show. M83 killed it!

I have been a fan of M83 since their first albums and was looking forward to seeing them play live. The concert at Club Nokia was a mixed bag. It was our first time there and the venue itself is below average, lots of security, standing in lines, waiting around, walking up and down stairs before you even get to the main stage. I prefer "older" venues like the Wiltern, El Rey, Orpheum etc., much less fuss and generally cheaper too. The show itself started a bit late (doors opened at 8, it was 10 before M83 went on) and the sound was too loud to the point of distortion throughout. It was also a short show, clocking in at 1 1/2 hours w/encore. So while I enjoyed hearing the band play live, the venue and sound quality brings it down from 5 to 3 stars.

This is one of the best concerts I have ever been to. The light show was crazy awesome, and the band play their instruments and sing so well. They actually sound like their albums, which is sometimes rare at these types of concerts. I appreciated the saxophone solos too. I would recommend this to anyone who is a big fan. It was basically a dance party. The only reason I rated this concert 4/5 stars is because I thought the first opener band was terrible and the second performer, albeit very good, was way too long. It became kind of painful to have to wait 2 hours just to hear M83. The M83 concert itself was a lot shorter than I had anticipated. I wish it had been a little longer. M83 was filled with energy Saturday night, and it was contagious. When arriving, preshow had started and wasn't so bad. When M83 arrived on stage it started out nicely and then before you knew it 1.5hrs later it was over. I feel as though 1.5hrs for a show is not a show. Should've been longer and not worth the ticket price.

M83 was amazing. Bob Moses was also very good. However, concert did not start until over an hour after it was supposed to start (8:10 instead of 7)

Loved m83, so glad they played some of their older stuff. What an amazing show! However we couldn't wait till opening act bob Moses got off. Their "music" was the same throbbing bass beat over and over with the other guy wailing the same phrase over and over. No thank you

This was one of the best concerts I had ever been to. M83 put on a stadium quality show at a club sized venue. This was the first time I had been to Stage AE and I don't know if the sound quality is usually as good as it was this time, but the mixing and sound quality was top notch. The vocal and musical performance by M83 was stunning. I'm so glad I came.

M83 was incredible live. Their recorded sound doesn't compare to the electricity and size of their live sound! They are true musicians and performers who put everything into their performance. They played a balanced mix of old and new material. I can't wait to see them again in the future!

M83 was awesome. I didn't know they had a new album out so I got to enjoy a lot of new stuff. I have been listening to Do It, Try It on repeat since the show. I will see them every time they come around. Go buy Junk.

I had no idea what to expect when purchasing tickets for this show. My boyfriend and I had never before been to an "electronic" show, and we were keeping an open mind about how the night would play out. As it happens, the show was incredible. I was afraid that the band would just stand behind a DJ sort of setup and act as hype men the entire time. In actuality, M83 is a damn good musical group who happens to have electronic elements in their music. The lighting, venue and set list were all gorgeous, and the crowd's enthusiasm was through the roof. This was literally one of the best shows I have ever been to. My date and I didn't want the show to end!!!! We were so excited to have New Orleans be the first night of the tour, and we will definitely keep an eye out to visit this band and venue again.

M83's show was absolute magic, from start to finish, with video, lights, on top of the sounds of the philharmonic and the band. Plus the dual-colored dancer!!! Plus, Phantogram opened, so my god, the best concert I've ever been to.

Phantogram opened for them, and they were great!!! I was surprised that the concert started exactly at 7, I usually find myself waiting a couple of minutes. M83 was sooo amazing! I loved all of their songs, I had chills when they started playing intro. The lighting was great, everything was great! Like I said, BEST CONCERT I'VE BEEN TO!

What a fantastic show. Layers upon layers of awesomeness. The very adult crowd seemed to be more interested in watching the show than holding their cellphones in the air. Very refreshing.
