Joan Armatrading

JOAN ARMATRADING ON TOUR:More than four decades after her debut, British singer-songwriter Joan Armatrading remains one of the country's most beloved and respected musical figures. She's a veritable legend on the guitar, and whether she's picking out tunes on a six-string or a twelve-string, she never fails to impress with her nimble fingers and soulful playing. On the road in 2015 for the tour A Very Special Solo Evening with Joan Armatrading, the beloved singer offers fans a rare treat -- intimate, career-spanning solo performances featuring stripped-down renditions of classics like "Love and Affection" and "The Weakness in Me".

I became a big fan in the mid/late '70's & saw Joan for the first time in mid '80's, at The Tower in Philly. Seeing her perform at The Scottish Rite Auditorium the other night was beyond all of my expectations! Our seats were FAB! The acoustics of this intimate venue honored Joan's perfect voice, her guitars & keyboards. She covered a smorgasbord of songs spanning her 40+ years of composing melodies & lyrics, with apparent ease & comfort. Her sense of humor was in full bloom and her well-earned pride for all of her accomishments was displayed via a narrated slide show. I truly feel that I received a very special gift, having treated myself & my sister, to that Very Special Evening With the-one-and-ONLY... Joan Armatrading! Thank you, Joan!!! Please come back again, sooooooon! Thanks also for signing my poster! God Bless You!

I was very happy to be able to see Joan Armatrading on her first solo world tour. The song choice was perfect for my memories of her best performances. She blended various electric guitars with acoustic ones as well as playing keyboard. Her voice displayed all the qualities of a seasoned performer. I loved every song she performed. Some of the performances were enhanced by pre-recorded sounds. It was mostly strings which added harmonies & a special feeling for me. I saw her with a full band @ the Greek Theatre in L.A. back in early 80's. At first I missed the full band, but then I really enjoyed the completeness of her great guitar playing & strong vocals. A truly magical evening!

I saw Joanie at Longwood Gardens in 90 degrees and she is one of the few artists I would do that for. I have seen her many times since the late 70s and she never ceases to amaze me. Her range and versatility are what make listening to her NEVER BORING.

Joan is an amazing musician. Her band rocked! The only thing I would suggest is that she have some back up singers. (women) besides her band. Wow was the weather hot.

This was my first time seeing Joan Armatrading live and also my first time at Longwood Gardens as a concert venue. I really enjoyed both Shawn Colvin and Joan Armatrading, although it was a strange pairing. Joan did a nice mix of old and new material, and she has tremendous presence, kick ass guitar work, and that wonderful unique voice. Which is where the problem was... the sound system (or it's technician) did not do a good job of bring out her voice in the mix. When the full band was playing, she was overpowered and her vocals were lost. All I could hear was the bass. At least where I was sitting. This was a tremendous disappointment, especially for a concert that was expensive. As I was walking out (while they were playing the last number) I noticed that the sound balance was better OUTSIDE of the concert seating area. Anyway, a caveat to those planning to go to a concert at Longwood.

No complaints about the concert itself--wonderful. The gardens are a great venue for a summer concert. The rows of seats on the top tier were very close together, making it hard for people to get in and out. Since it was outdoors and a more relaxed setting, people were a bit less considerate--running in and out of seats numerous times, ushers seating during a song rather than waiting until it was finished, and loud talking by a man in the back row. Wondered why he spent $50 to see a concert, only to talk continuously thru it. Was hard to see from row GG--there's not much elevation up there to see over the row in front of you.

Voice amplification for Joan needed tobe turned up. She is an amazingly talented singer, songwriter and guitarist. Gave a truly satisfying concert. Longwood Gardens was a magical setting with seating for just the right number of guests. Yea, Joan. Glad she's still on the road.

I have seen Joan Armatrading many times over the years. I really enjoy her music and her spirit. She is who she is - and she rocks out completely. A friend who came with me expected a folky show and while she writes amazingly meaningful and true lyrics to her songs, that woman ROCKS. The single most poignant aspect of this show for me was the incredible clarity and range in her voice. She sounds EXACTLY as she did as a young woman. You would almost expect some of this to fall off over the years but not with Joan. Also, this woman plays a guitar like nobody's business. It was a great show. New songs comingled with the classics. Even as hot as it was in Philadelphia that night, Joan did not disappoint. The venue - Longwood Gardens - is a great place to see a show. Outdoor, intimate, easy to park, amazingly beautiful gardens. It can be buggy so bring the spray.

I have been a fan of Joan Armatrading from the first song I heard played on the radio station in 1972. I immediately went out and purchased the album. I have purchased every one since then, and always recommend her music to folks who might be interested in discovering the rare treasure trove of musical talents she shares with listeners. Last night's concert at Longwood Gardens, (the second venue on her new tour) proved once again, that Ms. Armatrading is spot on as an artist and performer. The set she played was as diverse as her obviously admiring fans came to hear. The non stop applause heard as she played updated arrangements of some of her earliest work was met with the cheers from her oldest fans as well as the obvious new generational fans. Her band was the perfect compliment to her performance with backup on keyboards, strings and drums. "Tight" only begins to express the talents of her band. One would expect no less of Joan. Ms. Armatrading played many tracks from her latest album, and treated all who had not ever seen her in concert to her audience participation piece, Best Dress On for which she suggested some serious hand clapping and shouting out the lyrics when cued to join in. I didn't see anyone in the audience not swept up by this joyous upbeat song. Had it not been a record breaking day regarding the temperature, she would have heated up the venue with love exchanged from artist to audience and back again. Ms. Armatrading, breaks records as a complex performer and one possessing musical talents far beyond the reach of many of her peers. Her contributions as an artist, a humanitarian with the addition of her unique vocals, vision and musical legend only added to the pleasure of seeing her vibrant performance in a concert under the stars.. Undaunted by the heat and humidity, Joan & her band, as always, made this a circular performance; she made the sold out audience forget the excessive temperatures and instead focus on the beat, the message and an electrifyingly energetic performance that I shall never forget. There is nothing subtle about this performer - between her ability to play every instrument (which she does on the newest album with the exception of drums) belt out tunes of her own devise in any musical genre imaginable, and rock the house with constant standing ovations and applause affirms my opinion that this gal never ceases to amaze and never disappoints with her constant flow of compositions. The concert goer seated next to me commented on the length of the performance, summing it up with, "She's one not-so-little energizer bunny", to which I concurred. A performer one third her age could not of held up under the heat, lights and length of performance with the same level of unfading grit, energy, entertainment and love of her craft. Truly a consummate performer, accomplished self-taught musician, singer-songwriter-academic-humanitarian-Grammy award winner and inspiration for millions around the planet, Joan Armitrading shows us, with the humility of her roots, that at 60, she is only getting better as she ages in the music industry. She is a unique and true treasure for fans old and new! I traveled almost two hours to get to Longwood Gardens, which I would have done anyway as a member of the gardens, but I wouldn't drive two hours each way to see just any performer. I couldn't wait to get there, and played her latest album full volume on the drive home. As in in the wee hours of the morning, this morning recollecting the degree of enjoyment this inimitable woman inspires left this fan, still singing along with Joan!

We thought that if we didn't see her this tour we might not ever get a chance again to see her perform live her in Philadelphia. We were so happy we did. The sound was great and everyone was enchanted. I didn't mind sitting outdoors in the 90 degree heat to hear her sing. Thanks Joan!

I loved Joan Armatrading's music in the 80s but never had a chance to see her. This concert was terrific. She started off with a classic, and worked her way, with an excellent backup band (keyboard, sax/drums, bass) and a constantly changing series of guitars, through a broad repertoire of old and new, including her new CD. She is awesome, funny, brilliant and her voice is indescribable. Highly recommended.

First of all it is one of the best venues I ever saw a show at. The seating was comfortable, the atmosphere and concessions offered were very well done. Joan was at the top of her game. Her music and demeanor speaks for itself. If possible, her guitar playing was even better than the last time I saw her. Her infusion of blues and jazz was great as was her talent on the guitar. Her setlist gave a ecclectic appeal from her vast catalog of music. The water fountains behind the stage provided a beautiful backdrop. A class act all the way!

Joan Armatrading continues to exemplify what a true "Real Deal" musical artist looks like. Her voice was clear and strong, her band tight, her guitar playing - well she is an under-rated virtuoso. The setting and size of the venue was tremendous. Longwood Gardens is an unforgettable place to see a concert. Go early, enjoy the gardens, have a glass of wine and enjoy the music. One bit of constructive feedback; sometimes you need some dancing space. It is almost torture to have dancing music playing with no where to dance or move.

I travelled from SF to see Joan Armatrading. Dinner was highly disappointing as it almost seemed precooked before the show. Service was excellent. Joan Armatrading seemed to simply be going through the motions to get through the show letting us know it was over her 200th performance on the road which seemed that way. I think we had higher expectations for a show that could have had a bit more thought put into it

What a wonderful evening. Joan still sounds amazing and is still such a guiding force for women and rock/jazz/blues. the Orpheum was on my bucket list and it did not disappoint, a flashback to years gone by, and can still hold a tune, so did Joan Armatrading at 64 years young her voice didn't waiver once, a solo intimate performance played out with humor and poignancy, covering all decades, I saw her in the 70's and 80's and seeing her in 2015 brought it full circle, go see her while you still can ...all the way from America.

I have been a loyal Joan fan since the 70's. I been to 7 previous concert's which were all great. This last one in lax on saturday night was Terrible. Bad song selection ( very few popular songs ) the sound mixing was terrible as was the sound quality. Some song's she played a prerecorded background that was sounded bad and out of sync. She had an annoying screen behind her playing video/slide show. She played less than 2 hours of which 15 minutes were taken up of here showing her with different celebrity's. Home movie's--Bad Taste. She desperately needed her band. Please Don't waste your time or money on this pathetic show. This will sadly be my last Joan concert.

I've been a huge fan of Joan Armatrading for about 35 years, so I was so excited to finally see her in concert this past Saturday night at the Orpheum Theater. The opening act was Casey Frazier singing solo with his guitar and he was very good, mellow and entertaining. We even bought his 2 CDs in the lobby afterward. Ms. Armatrading was wonderful. She was witty and such a professional singer and musician. She still rocks! Bluesy and commanding. Alone on stage, she still sings great as she either played guitar or piano organ. She also had a slide show behind her showing pictures of her through the years as she chatted with the audience or images that enhanced her songs, if that's possible.. My husband was with me and he was not really familiar with her music and I know he really enjoyed the evening a lot. Of course, I couldn't stop playing her CDs to the Orpheum and back home and for the next few days too. We'd never been to the Orpheum before and though it was old fashioned with the fringed curtains above the stage, there were plenty of stalls in the bathrooms, cup holders on the seats and nice ushers.

This concert exceeded all my expectations. Joan played solo without a back up band, and she certainly didn't need one. Her amazing voice is stronger than ever and her guitar and keyboard skills superb. Joan also gave a brief but entertaining and informative overview of her career. She narrated the media show with both humility humor and I'm glad she did. They are saying that this is Joan's last major world tour, and given her age this may be the case. Do yourself a favor and catch this show if you can. I'd go again in a second.

Even though this venue is quite large, Joan created an intimate evening as a solo act. She played three different guitars as well as keyboards and sang many of her greatest hits. The only improvement for the evening would have been to monitor down the sound level overall especially the instrumentation as they tended to drown out her vocals at various times. The volume also hurt the ears where both my husband and I used kleenex to damper the discomfort of that. Amazing how many sound engineers out there are absolutely deaf!

This made the second time I've had the priviledge of seeing Ms. Armatrading. Once in 1988 (or so) at the Wiltern Theater in Hollywood, California and now this show in Ft. Lauderdale. Unlike many artists who's voices deteriorate over time who must change melodies to avoid the 'high notes', Joan sounded just the same as I remember her from 27 or so years ago. I had forgotten what a master of the guitar she is! I was so happy to be able to take a young friend of mine with me (who wasn't even born yet when I first attended Ms. Armatrading's show in Hollywood) and expose him to a different type of artist than those he's familiar with (hip hop and rap, pop, etc). He had a great time and gained a new perspective on true artistry. I'm saddened to learn that this is advertised as Joan's final world tour. I would gladly go see her again and again and again. Thank you, Joan Armatrading, for sharing your amazing soul and talents with all of us!

Joan Armatrading in the US! Joan did a few numbers from her early years that were sung with guitar or keyboards- truly enjoyed. Later in her career she played a lot of rock with electric guitar and head banging riffs. The audience went wild. I did not as I was geared for a retrospective tour proportioned to the music I have always identified her with... Hearts and flowers, always, in your eyes, merchant of love, etc I love Joan's music from her early decades ... If you are looking for that, you might want to stay home and put on a CD. But, she is a incredible artist and woman of diversity and change... So for that, I was honored to see her live in concert.

Seeing Joan Armatrading was like reconnecting with a friend. My only regret is that, while she has been by my side, singing triumphs and failures for decades, I could not return the favor by telling her that she didn't have to sing "Willow" if it wasn't in her. Joan was amazing and funny...beautiful smile and such a wonderful collection of great songs. The backing track was a little unwelcome at times, though I understand her need to travel without a band...still, she showed amazing talent vocally and on guitar. On her final world tour, Joan Armatrading showed her unique ability as both a singer and musician in this solo performance. She sang a variety of songs from different albums. She was amazing on the acoustic six string, twelve string and electric guitar, and piano. She played some outstanding guitar solos. She showed a wry sense of humor and appreciation for her audience. Being a fan for 30 years I never had the opportunity to see Joan Armatrading perform. Sunday April 19 2015 at the Carolina Theatre in Durham NC was one of the highlights of my musical experiences. Her guitar work is hard to describe. Amazing comes close but it's so much more. It was such a pleasant surprise to watch her wicked lIcks. So much fun. My wife who was not a fan could not say enough about her performance on the drive home. If you the opportunity to see Joan live do not miss it!'

Joan sounded sincere but I'd be hard pressed 's to say I understood anything she sang or said all evening. For a two instrument solo show this venue sounded like 1970 at MSG with dreadful bouncing acoustics .

With piano and guitar and a bit of pre-recorded accompaniment, Joan performs a winning solo performance. Don't miss her. It tooks a while for the sound engineer to get the sound levels right.

I've seen Joan twice with full bands but it was a real treat to see her all on her own. I never realized she was such a good guitarist! I know it's her final major tour and it seemed very fitting.

Joan playing guitar and piano. No one else. The concert hall was a great venue for her to perform. See her while you can. I have been a fan for her entire career one of my favorites.

she is one of my musical favorites and great influences . i appreciate the way the engaged and shared with the audience . a very big negative was the incredibly poor (loud but muffled ) acoustics . i have been to other concerts there and thought the acoustics were great so was surprised and disappointed.

Was great to see and hear her in the flesh again. Did not enjoy the pre-recorded music. If this was 'solo' concert, I'd have preferred to hear only her. Her vocal mic was insufficient, guitar and piano drowned it out. Overall sound quality was distracting.

It is amazing to see Joan perform in such an intimate venue. It took awhile for her to warm to the audience but after a few standing O's and hooting and hollering, she was really into the show. This was especially true in her bold guitar work which stood out since she was without the usual backing of a band. She moves so smoothly from her haunting ballads to the blues to some great rock (I always remember her bouncing around in brightly colored sneakers). And it is always special to end with everyone joining in to sing "Willow". A special night indeed.

Excellent show. Looks of energy. Her voice is still as tremendous. A virtuoso on the guitar. Wish the show could go on longer, but I could never get enough of her.

Since the early 80's I have seen Joan Armatrading perform with a band at least 6 times. The shows were always great but this time, to see her solo was a real treat! Over the years I have come to expect very little interaction with the audience from Joan. I thought she was shy. Wow, was I surprised and thrilled that this time she was playful and teasing and very connected to her audience! She is an accomplished guitarist and to comment on the music seems secondary. Of course the music was great, that's why we were there, but to have that glimpse into her personality was my personal thrill. This is billed as her "Last Major World Tour", I'm very glad to have seen it!

I've been a fan of Joan Armatrading for more than 30 years, so finally seeing her live was a wonderful experience. I was happy that she played lots of her older songs, because they really mean a lot to me. She opened with "City Girl", which was unexpected and awesome. Since I am a guitarist I was particularly interested in her playing, and she did not disappoint. During the show, Joan used both 12 and 6 string acoustics, as well as an electric. She demonstrated her virtuosity accompanied only by a little bit of prerecorded music, apparently to add "colour" to what she was playing. There was a message on a screen at the beginning of the show letting us know that there would be a bit of prerecorded music. In a way, I wish she wouldn't have used it, but I understand why it was needed. I just felt like it perhaps interfered with the timing of the live music at times. That issue aside, I cannot overstate how wonderful it was to hear her play guitar. She is simply awesome. Joan also played piano, and she was great on that as well. Her vocals were just great, especially on "Kissin and Huggin". The vocals and guitar work were mesmerizing. I'd definitely see her again if I had the chance.

Joan Armatrading is an amazing singer and song writer. Her new tour has her providing history of her amazing career with witty stories and generous numbers of songs. The New York City venue had horrible accoustics which deprived this attendee of her magnificent voice while poor speakers amplified the instruments, too loud already.

Echoing the below sentiments expressed in the reviews, I have also been a huge fan of Joan Armatrading for over 30+ years. I was blown away at the concert in NYC! Joan got a standing ovation for the first few minutes that she appeared on stage and the applause was deafening. Standing ovations for many of her songs and she does not disappoint with the setlist either.(Didn't want to list the songs you'll hear but she plays so many of her greatest hits!) I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND going to see her during this tour if you are a fan. Her talents are off the charts - love her sense of humor too. Her voice continues to sound phenomenal after all these years - NYC <3 Joan Armatrading!

The concert was fantastic! Joan still has that magical voice and her songs will always resonate ! We all may have aged in the last 30 years but she jams on the guitar and sings those blues like she did in the 80s!

This Review is in no way a reflection of the Artist. Joan Armatrading was wonderful and an extremely talented musician. The acoustics were poor; unable to clearly hear & understand her singing. Where were the sound engineers?

Joan Armatrading and her band dished out some great, no nonsense, original, creative and refreshing music. This is the first concert I have attended where I liked the artist's new music as much as the older music I have played over and over for 20 years. Her new stuff blends hard rock, folk and jazz into a perfect storm of great sound. Her voice shifts between fragile to stone cold attack with mastery and meaning. I have been a fan of Joan since the early 80's I still enjoy her albums from back in the day but didn't know what to expect 20 years later. She was masterful with the old stuff and new stuff alike. In fact my favorite song of the concert was a new song I'd never heard before. Good stuff Joan! I'm so glad I didn't miss you.

I have seen her many times before. However, I have missed her last 2 tours. It was definitely time to check in. Was I ever amazed! Not only did she draw from her ample past catalogue, re-working some of her classics, such as "Tall In The Saddle", making them sound fresh and evolved into something greater than the original. She also played cuts from "Into The Blues". and "This Charming Life." Her guitar playing is amazing! She has really grown as a player, and can stand up to any guitar god out there! After 20 LP's she continues to amaze.

Joan Armatrading's concert was nothing short of spectacular. Her voice is as strong and vibrant as ever. Hearing her perform on stage was like listening to a CD. The authenticity of her voice and lyrics stands the test of time and consistently inlivens and delights the crowd. I'm a rare concert attendee. But, I wouldn't have missed this show for anything. She is a rare and truly gifted artist. Go and see her, you will not be disappointed!

Joan Armatrading took us on a "tour" of the years - with songs from her second recording up to her most recent "A Charmed Life". Joan's voice and guitar work is beautiful and some of the best music in the world. Yes I am biased - I Love Her! So old stuff was flawless - recent blues work was inspired and authentic and wow - great guitar! - songs off new cd are great - it has the feel of some of her best old stuff - but fresh. Terrace Theater was OK - but sound bounces off back wall and echo's - a little distracting!!!
