I just love Ashford & Simpson! For the past 2 years, I've gone to see them where ever they were in the area -- the Birchmere once and the Carter Baron twice. They are an awesome duo. However, this time, their opening act could have stayed on longer and we could have called the show done. Al Johnson was a one man show -- an entertainer with carisma. Truly, he did not need the his side group "The Unifics" with him last night. He held the audience in the palm of his hand. Is band was hitting! They sounded like the band on Johnny Carson -- very sharp. Al Johnson is truly a balladeer! His voice is one that you could listen to all night! His imitations of our great singers who have passed away was more than a tribute to their names. We were on our feet dancing, clapping and singing more with Al Johnson than the headliners. That's a profound statement -- true and profound! The next time he's in town performing, get a ticket! You won't regret it.

I really enjoyed the show. I still can not believe that Nick and Val have not changed in all of the these years. They looked and sounded great. They are masters of the art. They tore down the house with" Is it still good to you"!! Val moved and still looked like a young girl. Al Johnson was in rare form. His voice was outstanding. My favorite part of his show was his hits with the Unifics. I wanted to hear more. It was a wonderful evening filled with great music.

After four decades of longevity, three in which hits, after hits after hits climbed the Rhthym and Blues, American, and International, Billboard Record Charts, the fabulous duo still has their powerful punch. From songs like "Ain't no mountain high enough", "You're all I need to get by", "The Boss", "I'm every woman", "Solid as a rock", "Is it still good to you?",... the swank husband and wife team, their big sound band, and soulful background singers dazzled & wowed the Capital City audience under the stars on a perfect summer night.

Very good show. Nick and Val still look and sound good. The band was on total point! I was really pleased to see Al Johnson still doing it! Hearing all those old t unes that were truly "Solid as a Rock" reminded me that good music never dies. Al johnson singing "Court of Love" and "Beginning of my End" took us all back to great memories, great house parties and gave us an opportuity to show our love and appreciation for home grown, DC native talent. Both acts gave it up for real music with superb lyrics that allowed us to feel what we expect from the music.

Just wanting a night out, opened my Ticketron notice to check the area. You can't beat the price of a Carter Barron ticket. Al Johnson opening for Ashford & Simpson was the line up. Another excellent evening under the stars. Al Johnson was lead singer for The Unifics and is a product of DC. He still has "it" and carries a full entertaining show on his own. Ashford & Simpson were a pleasant surprise. I'm not a big fan, but surprised to find Nick and Valerie looking and sounding great. The audience came for a good time and to support beloved entertainers. Another wonderful DC evening. Check the Carter Barron's schedule. This is a DC treasure and one of the best values in town.

The songs written by Ashford and Simpson were real good. They really brought back fond memories of "back in the day". It was a great evening. Al Johnson was surprisingly good. His covers of singers like Luther and Barry were very good. His cover of Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get in on" was the highlight of his set.

The last time I saw Ashford and Simpson had to be about 15-20 years ago in my hometown of Detroit. They were fantastic then and still got it now! The show was everything I thought it would be and more. The opening act of Al Johnson was also good. I must admit I had never heard him before, but was very pleased with his performance. Overall, I would recommend this concert to everyone.

I was just bowled over with the show! I was told almost at the end of Al Johnson's set that he was a member of the Unifics. He was thoroughly engaging and entertaining. I have some of the Unifics songs, so it was a pleasure to hear him. He did wonderful covers of other songs. Ashford & Simpson have long been a favorite of mine. I 've loved Valerie Simpson ever since "Silly"!!! Was the first time I'd seen them in concert. I had heard nothing but good word-of- mouth about them. They were absolutely GREAT! It was one the few times at the Carter Baron when I've seen the concert-goers so enthusiastic and "caught up" with the act. They had us in the palms of their hands from the first! I dont know about anybody else, but it was a wonderful place to be! The show was just wonderful, absolutely wonderful. We're talking quality entertainment for a steal!! Keep it up. Thanks Al Johnson and Ashford & Simpson. Thanks DC Parks & Rec. for a good time!!!!!!!

Valerie Simpson and Nick Ashton are exciting to watch because of the chemistry between them that you could feel all the way to the top seats at the Carter Barron last night. I love their music but I was looking for more excitement to get the audience standing on their feet.. Valerie was great but I thought that Nick was just going through a well rehearsed set with no emotion.

The Ashford and Simpson show at the Carter Baron in D.C. on Sat Jul 11 was great. Nick and Val were wonderful. Their performance reminded me of what I truly miss in music and concerts. It was great to hear the songs that helped me through my early marriage years, kids, etc. Nick and Val - you guys are still "solid as a rock"!! Al Johnson was wonderful as well. My husband and I truly enjoyed the entire evening and look forward to more from Al and the Unifics.

I have to say that Ashford and Simpson are two of the greatest entertainers ever. However, I think with all of the top hit songs that they have, they did not sing enough of them. Although I love Diana Ross singing the "Boss", and I love Ray Charles singing "Let's Go Get Stoned", I think that Ashford and Simpson have too many songs of their own that I would like to have heard. Instead of those two songs, why not sing, "So, So Satisfied", or "Somebody Told A Lie", two songs that I simply love. In talking to a few of my friends, they all seem to agree that they should have sang less of other peoples songs, although they did write them, and more of their own songs. Unfortunately, we were a little disappointed.

The concert on 7/11/09 was outstanding. I didn't really know Al Johnson, but when he sang songs from his earlier days with a group, I remembered the tunes. He had a lot of versatility in his singing. Totally enjoyable. Ashford and Simpson still maintain the showmanship of of the past, when artists were the ultimate professionals no matter the venue. Val's voices is as clear and strong as ever; however perhaps Nick was a little hoarse. I'd buy tickets any day for an Ashford and Simpson concert!!

The show was great, it started on time, the weather couldn't have been better. Al Johnson was at the top of his game. He brought the audience to their feet several times and his material was flawless. As for Ashford and Simpson, exceptional! The wardrobe, the bank and back-up singers were all stupendous. But as always the thing that impresses me most about them is their oneness. The symmetry they have is inspiring. It's beautiful. Their voices and act are still top notch after all these years and that is not an easy thing to do, although they make it seem easy. I love the Carter Baron and go often, it's a great venue. I would easily give them five SHOOTING stars.

Al Johnson still has the pipes to sing with anyone. Truly a great DC talent. Ashford and Simpson put on a fabulous show...and I repeat "show". They were great. What a charming and musically profound experience. I saw Ashford and Simpson's debut "group" performance in NYC in 1973. (I'm old.) This year's performance was as polished as their Lincoln Center performance and the music drew all of the audience in. It's a blessing that we have a venue in the area (Birchmere) that puts us so close to history and brilliance. The performance was SOLID AS A ROCK!! :)

What a great way to have spent a Saturday night. The show was everything I hoped for and a whole lot more. I could still see myself ,circa, late 60's - early 70's, with deeply cuffed bell bottom double knit pants, fly away collared colorful shirt and "down" Johnson & Murphy shoes .I thought myself so sharp only God could save me from myself!! A&S brought back so many good times ..what stunningly, ageless vibrant performers. Nick and Val always perform brilliantly every year. It was very refreshing that the concert was on a Saturday evening .... (previous years on Sunday's). Their voices mellow with age! I've always been "in love" with Nicholas.... his eyes are very mysteriously sensual. Val is such a lady and it is quite obvious that she loves the gift of singing. Ashford and Simpson ..... the husband and wife sensation that will always be my favorite duo! I must travel to New York and hang out with them at Sugar Bar....

Though the entire show was an exact repeat of 2009 show, Ashford and Simpson are still great entertainers and give it all they've got while on stage. Nick's voice cracked a bit and he sounded hoarse as if he may have been either just recovering from a cold or the flu, or was becoming ill. He didn't even take off his jacket this show claiming that he didn't have on anything "sexy" underneath!

A moving performance that brought back many memories. This was a very special performance sponsored by The Links, Inc. and a homecoming of sorts as it was near Nick's hometown, Willow Run. Nick and Valerie are a very special couple whose brilliant compositions come from the obvious synergy that they share with each other. Standing among Smokey, Holland-Dozier-Holland, Norman Whitfield, Stevie Wonder, etc. it is easy for some to overlook them as one of the creative powerhouses behind Motown's success but they are truly one of the greatest songwriting duos of all time and their songs will be remembered long after all of us are gone. Great job A&S!!
