Really enjoyed the Marillion concert at the Royale Boston theater last Friday. They played a number of their past hits along with their new material from the FEAR album. The venue was fantastic because it allowed you to quite close to the band. Looking forward to seeing them again in the future.

This band needs more acculades and a better following in North America. They haven't been to Cleveland in over a decade, and they play a place that is tight with alloted time and tight with space to sit. Seats are just terrible. Cuffed makes the band modify set list and the opener to start ten minutes early. John Wesley is a talented guitarist, writer and singer out of Tampa Bay whose been part of the Marillion family since Holidays In Eden. I know individuals who had seats up close, but to the side, had terrible sight lines with the curtain.

Second night of a two-night stand at the House of Blues, Sunset Strip. It's been eight years since Marillion played this venue, or any date in the U.S. Wednesday night's show was a night of mutual appreciation between audience and band. Thursday night's show just built from that, with a completely different set-list (except for "Neverland", which was played both nights). An epic performance of "This Strange Engine" was a highlight, with lead singer Steve Hogarth (h) climbing on to the speaker stacks to lean out into the audience. It may have been a club show, but it had arena proportions. Towards the end of the evening h thanked the audience for such a warm welcome, becoming a bit overwhelmed with emotion. A sing-a-long "Three Minute Boy" ended the final encore, with the audience barely whispering the lyrics. What can I say, it was almost a religious experience.

If you remember this band from the 80's, you should really visit their website marillion.com to see what they've been up to for the last 20 years! They changed a lot when their original lead singer left. Frankly, I think of the current Marillion as a separate band - and a wonderful one at that. The songs speak of love, life, family, loss, sex, and a whole lot more. Hogarth's vocals give me chills and the band still rocks! Shows are perfect for couples and families too but fans of the original lineup won't be disappointed - lots of driving guitar, bass, and synth to move you. For US fans, this new tour is a long overdue revelation. The band holds conventions every year or two - always outside of the states. The shows will blow you away. They give so much to the fans! If you can watch a DVD of one of the conventions, you'll see what I mean. Don't miss a show in the states... You don't know when they might be back!

Excellent show! Even with the technical difficulties this was an incredible evening. I've been a fan of Marillion for just about 30 years now and they've never disappointed me. I only wish they were able to tour the U.S more often.

After 8 years they were finally back. Tuesday night was magical, Wednesday night was solid. Tuesday had for me the better set list and had some truly amazing moments. Wednesday night opened up great and then some of the song choices were not perhaps my favorites but you cannot have it all. It is crazy that these guys do not have a bigger following. Their material is as good or better than likes of Radiohead etc. Shame Jimmy Kimmel did not happen. Hope it does not take 8 years again for them to come back.

I saw these cats w.Fish long ago, 1987 Clutching At Straws tour. They sure have improved. A LOT. Better stage presentation, cool videos for the songs projected behind (and onto) the band, and better MUSIC. They used to have such an abrupt way of moving from section to section within the numbers, now sometimes one can't tell a change is coming until it's already happened. I was way up in the mezzanine looking straight down, third row from the back, dead center. The lights made patterns on the stage floor, I'd have missed that if I was down a level. They using LEDs? It's possible to achieve a synthesis of Pink Floyd and Radiohead, I saw and heard it happen. Sure am putting a lotta Marillion CDs into the player this past week. I need to make more of an effort to appreciate this band. After this gig, I like 'em a lot more. Fantastic place! Thanks Marillion!! for coming to see us. Mark Finzel, Haslett MI

This was my first time seeing Marillion live despite having been a fan since the late '80's. I'd heard lots of positives from others and they could't have been more right! Marillion straddle many genres. At one point they were clearly a neo-Progressive band and some would argue that they've moved on from that. However, their style really fits no single genre and isn't that what progressive music has always been about? No boundaries? Marillion chose a set list for this show that exemplified this approach. "El Dorado" and "The Leavers" from their current album F.E.A.R., were highlights of the show as the live performance of these pieces accentuated their emotional depth and dynamic range. If you weren't sure about these songs, you are now. Imagine Genesis's "Supper's Ready" and Pink Floyd's "Echoes" thrown in a blender and channeled through Marillion's inimitable style. They played their biggest hit single, "Kayleigh" and fan favorites, "The Invisible Man," and "Seasons End." Just like there's no other band quite like Rush, there's no band quite like Marillion. The one thing they do have in common, however is that they've always done what they wanted to do. They both earned their freedom by reaching a fan base that gets what they do and they've stuck with them over the years, embracing each new album with excitement and anticipation of the unknown. The band themselves played wonderfully and sounded great, it doesn't seem possible they are pushing 60. It wasn't hard to tell they were having a great time, lots of genuine smiles, and they were clearly surprised by the audience's chanting at the end of "The Leavers" that was inspired by the live version of "The Leavers: One Tonight" from the Living in F.E.A.R. EP. The audience was clearly "all in" as singer Steve Hogarth got quick responses calling for the fans to quiet down so they could continue on multiple occasions. It was nice to see that there was not a bad seat in the house. The Carolina Theater in Durham, NC is a lovely location with an old world atmosphere that lent to the timelessness of the occasion. I could've sat there for another two hours and let the band continue to mesmerize my senses and take me even further on the musical journey. And although they didn't go as far back in their catalog as some might've hoped, they did play "Kayleigh" from 1985's Misplaced Childhood. The final encore was "This Strange Engine" the title track and album from their 1997 release. It was a fitting conclusion, as Marillion is indeed a strange engine that keeps chugging along it's own musical path. I suggest you go if they come around again.

Their performance was wonderful. Pristine sound quality. The show was a bit short. My disappointment was that they didn t play much of the music I was hoping to hear (I have four albums). They seem a little disconnected with their American audience.

I suppose when someone is a huge fan of a band and is asked to write a review of a show they attended, there's bound to be some bias, right? YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT! I've been a fan since Misplaced Childhood. Over the years, their music has touched me like no other band ever has. I honestly never thought I'd get to see them live. Was it worth the three decade wait? YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT! I'd like to commend the staff of Carolina Theatre for their excellent service, convenient parking, and beautiful old theater atmosphere. The acoustics were wonderful. Marillion took us all away that night, and I'm pretty sure none of us really wanted to come back. Heartfelt, passionate music made by fantastic 'real' musicians, plenty of material mixed in from over the many years they've been together, a performance to remember for a lifetime. I sincerely hope that they'll come back to this venue!

We had the pleasure of watching and listening to Marilion on their current tour of the U.S. For us in the south is a rare occurance when this band comes to our "neck of the woods" to play for us. The location was about 4/5 full and the crowd was really pumped up for the band. The band came out to minimal lighting but a nice backdrop with videos that matched the theme of the songs. First out of the box was El Dorado suite from their latest CD F.E.A.R. They followed this up with "You're Gone, "Beyond You" , Seasons End", and "Kayleigh" and back into the later half of F.E.A.R. with The Leavers Suite. "The Great Escape" and "King" followed before they had their fist encore with "Invisible Man".Their second encore was "This Strange Engine". The band was excellent with special props to Steve Rothery who was spectacular on guitar. Steve Hogart's vocals were a little muddy at times but he was a wonderful showman. Ian Mosley did a good job on the drums and Pete Trawawas was an excellent bassist. I think Mark Kelley did a little to much sampling on the keyboards but he was adequate with very little in the way of solos. My only complaint was to much was played from F.E.A.R and too little of what many consider heir best songs. Missing was "Waiting to Happen", "No One Can", "Dryland", "Easter", and "Afraid of Sunlight". Oh well you can't have it all. it was a great eventing regardless and I will definitely go see them again when they return. If you get a chance go see them. It is worth the time and money.

I've seen Marillion 16 time's, (not an easy show to get to if you live in USA) This show was the best ever, The venue was perfect for them. One of the Only Unforgettable Things!!! Hogarth was Dead On! He sounded like he was 20 years younger. I only wish I didn't have to take a day off & jump on a plane to see my all-time favorite Band.....If anyone that can do something about it, PLEASE add a show in The NY area, PLEASE!!!!!!

I only have a couple of Marillion cds, but enough to want to check them out at a nice venue. I enjoy progressive rock. I was not disappointed, and not knowing all their music didn't matter. Every song was engaging. Their music and show while mostly dark and sometimes apocalyptic focused on song textures as a group with no real individual prowess involved which was very refreshing. The visuals added to the mood and overall feel and didn't overpower. The ensemble musicianship was stellar. My only "complaint" which is what got the 4 star instead of 5 star, is that they had 2 encores that ended up kind of forced. Not sure what they were going for as for the encores were more of the same (which was good, but...). It seemed out of character for the type of show they offered. Therefore I much more enjoyed the first 75% of the show before the "encores." But over all great performance.

And for anyone that knows me that is really something!! I have seen most if not all of the Marillion DVD/blu rays over the years. Always wanted to see them live and this show did not disappoint in the least. If I had a complaint it would be that the show was not long enough. If you are a fan of the band don't miss them you will NOT be disappointed. If you are a fan of prog rock in any form go see them! Hope they return to NC soon!

Marillion are my favourite band. They've never disappointed or failed to give an outstanding full performance. If you know their music you know to expect energy and above all emotion to come through. The crowd enlivened the concert (as they often do at Marillion shows) with affection, understanding and singing. The Royale was a good venue and the sound was (from where I was) excellent. I want to keep them to myself but truly I cannot recommend them enough.

Not a great match with John Wesley as opening act. Wesley is a great guitarist and his recorded music is exceptional. I've listened to his music regularly. Marillion is in a league of its own. Pink Floyd with personality, and absolutely one of the finest guitarists out there in Steve Rothery. "H" was on the mark with the vocals and I'm hoping Marillion offers the concert on CD via its website. The big screen behind the band complemented the music well and was a great addition. Face it, these guys are great, and after nearly 30 years together (post-Fish) are getting better. The only problem with this event was the curfew which shortened the band's set. The second encore of Sugar Mice, Easter and Three Minute Boy sent me home happy though. Get back soon . . .

You would think after over a decade of not being in the USA Marrilion would put on a show that no one would forget. The set list was obviously focused on their new album. I think the biggest disappointment was the atmosphere. I couldn't tell if I was at a Marillion concert or the opera? I have never been to a concert where the fans sat the whole time. The concert venue is horrible. Everyone was cramped in tiny seats and felt like sardines. Very disappointing.

The concert was great but I really like the band so I guess I'm a bit biased. Nonetheless, I think anyone who enjoys neo prog rock would have a great time. The only complaint was the opening artist. No really my cup of tea, besides he used loops rather than a real band. Danforth music hall has seen better days.

This band is noted for its live shows, and this one was one of the best. They played tight and clean. Impeccable musicianship and songs well above the typical toe-tapping pop tune made this concert just awesome. To top it off, Marillion's (and more specifically lead vocalist's Steve "h" Hogarth's) theatricality only added to it. Many songs were accompanied by interpretive animations in the background.

Ive followed Marillion since Fish was the lead singer. Steve H has only improved upon a great band that needed a new lead singer. Everything this band has done with music, fan involvement, fan financed projects, website, Marillion music festivals, management, etc, has not only worked perfectly, it has flourished. Like Steve said during the show...."With this band, its all about the music"...and it shows. Mesmerizing. If you have a chance to see them live, don't miss it.

I have been a fan for over 30 + years and am truly thankful for what this band gives back to their fans. Never dialed in or bored with what they are doing, they constantly give more than expected. They may be a band from the past but they certainly do not dwell in the past. They can be out up against anyone today and I guarantee that any viewer whether into progressive rock or not, will walk away a convert. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself. Marillion never really broke in the U.S. after they started in the Eighties, but I think only because prog rock was out and the market here was solely pop. However, they took storm in Europe because of some of the best song writing in this genre and a frontman named Fish who had a great voice and a lot of charisma. I loved the band then and longed to see them tour here, but that never happened. About ten years ago, I looked them up and was happy to see the band was still together and doing well with a new singer named Steve Hogarth and a modern style of prog. Their newer music is different but is fantastic. The songs aren't as catchy as they were under Fish but I do like Steve's voice a bit more. I finally got to see them at the Saban theater in Beverly Hills and revived my love for this band in a new era. They only perform a few shows in the United States each year so I feel lucky and honored to get to see them. The show was amazing. My only desire was that they play a few more songs from the Fish era. They did play one, and the reaction from the crowd made it clear that many of the audience have loved this band as long as I have. I plan on seeing them every time they come to LA. One short story: I visited family in Dallas in the late Eighties and accidentally left a cassette tape of Marillion's first album Script for a Jester's Tear in my cousin's tape player. He was the typical straight "A" high school student and was into pop stuff at the time. When I visited the next time a year or so later, his whole room was plastered with imported Marillion posters. He explained that he listened to this album and the others and became an addict of this band, much more than I ever was. His mom and dad vacationed in London after he became a fan and brought back Marillion merchandise at his request. This was prior to the Internet so I was stunned at his collection. Marillion really is one of the most amazing bands ever. I still do listen to their early stuff on occasion. After this concert, I am inspired to listen to their more recent music.

Been a fan since the near beginning. Last saw them live for the Marbles tour. It was excellent. This concert featured featureless more recent material with the same slow 4/4 beat, angst filled and melodramatic vocals. Seeing as we have some great musicians on stage, they had very little to do. No grand solos, or searing rills up and down frets or keyboards. The drummer had to do the same 4/4 beat with little flourish to add. Kelly on keyboards didn't have much to do either. They admitted they had complaints from the San Francisco show for not doing some oldies. So they did one. I was hoping for some energy, like Slainte Mhah, Freaks, Incommunicado to liven up the show. Nope, they chose "Sugar Mice", a beautiful tune but it features the same slow 4/4 beat with angst filled vocals. It's one of their best tunes and Rothery had some stuff to do for once, but it added only a bit of energy to the show. The next tune was more of the same, so I left. No need to hear two hours of this. I left after an hour.

I've seen Marillion in Los Angeles every time they have played here since 1987. They are one of the few bands touring and recording I am willing to see. That being said, I left this particular show somewhat disappointed. They rarely tour the U.S. anymore, and with 18 studio albums, they only performed music from six of them. Granted, any opportunity to see this band is a gift, but they played virtually the same songs they played in 2012 with the exception of material from the new album. So many great songs from the 90's and 2000s completely ignored. Oh well...they sounded great and Hogarth's voice was in top shape as usual. This band deserves much more recognition than they have received here in the U.S.

One of my 80's favorite rock band, Steve Rothery plays a mean guitar and Peter Trewavas carries the melody with his bass playing. Never get tired of leasing to Marillion, No old song from the Fish day though except for Sugar Mice with that Steve solo guitar solo that makes the night.

I've seen Marillion at weekend conventions in the UK and Canada, as well as 3 shows on their 2012 tour, so I have a high benchmark when it comes to rating an individual show. They delivered a great performance, with an excellent set list and h's voice on top form. The light show was understated compared to other events, with maybe too much concentration on the image projections

Marillion finished up their 2012 U.S. tour at the historic Fillmore. With probably the best set-list of the tour, the band was still riding a high from the two Los Angeles shows and brought a great deal of energy to San Francisco. Lead singer Hogarth (h) started the show by hanging over a balcony rail singing the opening bars of "Splintering Heart". That set the tone for an extremely enthusiastic performance that ran well over two hours, including three encores. The San Francisco crowd got pretty rowdy during the last half of the set, even yelling over some of the quieter lines, forcing h to completely abandon the last line of "Afraid of Sunlight". Now it's only nine months to go until Marillion Weekend 2013 in Montreal.

The music was incredible and the lead singer was awesome! I like the way they started the show with one by one of the musicians coming out and then the lead singer was on the balcony! So cool! I did not know their music but was soon in love with it. I especially loved the song called "Pleasant Places"!!! It was so beautiful that it brought tears to my eyes!! The only negative thing I can say about this show was the fact that it should have started earlier or eliminated the beginning band since we had to leave at 11:30 to catch the BART Train which runs until midnight! We did not want to leave early but we had to!! Bummers!! Plus there were no seats - we had to stand the whole time.

We just returned from L.A. and the two night House of Blues, Hollywood shows. I loved both nights in L.A. and had great seats with a great view. The sound was perfect. And now San Francisco would be another night to add to it. The Fillmore sound was also perfect on this night. I guess I would have to say it's the bands sound people who are to be thanked. I would not have missed it for the world! A different atmosphere but all the same great music. Few bands still make me feel this way. Very few bands would I travel the coast to see muliple shows. They are the music that my ears love to hear. They bring that something special to their live shows. Little known after all these years here in the States, I kind of like it that way, knowing if they come, I can get that special feeling, playing smaller venues and being more intimate. Wish I could see a "Marillion Weekend" but this was the next best thing. Amazing.

So happy to see Marillion back in the U.S. after eight long years away. Playing a two-night stand with a different set-list each night, the band pulled out all their best live material, including epic performances of "This Strange Engine", "Man of a Thousand Faces", "Neverland", and "Ocean Cloud". After a somewhat rocky start on the first East Coast dates, they had really hit their stride by the first night in L.A. There was a lot of reciprocation with the enthusiastic crowd, which pushed the band to an even higher emotional level of performance. Lead singer h was visibly overcome with appreciation towards the end of the second night's performance. Truly, a way of life.

Marillion's show at the Fillmore was wonderful! It was the final show for their US tour and I'm so glad that I was able to go to a show while they were in the states. They did an interesting mix of old and new songs - though it is impossible to please everyone when you have so many albums from which to choose. So much emotion - from the band and the audience! Everybody has their own "nirvana" and this band is mine. I have been waiting for years in the hopes they would make it back to California again and I was not going to miss it. It was everything. It was perfect. I'm 56 years old but this band makes me feel young again. My eyes filled with stars and my ears filled with the sounds of a generation. Within two days they played with perfection and humor playing songs that covered all the years this great band has been around. Drinking in the nights and the fans that attended. I felt they were enjoying themselves and the evenings. We felt special. After the show, we were invited up to the 3rd floor bar and had a chance to talk with the band. Great show, great band and great venue. All my expectations were filled. We flew out the next day to catch them in San Francisco the following night, a short drive from our home in San Jose. Few bands can still make me feel this way. Hope to see Marillion again soon!

Marillion has a diverse yet fanatical fanbase that energizes the band to perfection. This night was as perfect a setlist for me as there can be. Having been a fan since the early 1980s I have many favorite songs from their 16 studio albums and the band played most of them. Great night. Great energy. I also made a few new friends in line before the show.

Another excellent Marillion concert. 5 musicians on top of their game; they are getting better... Still prefer the old songs, but some of the new material is awesome too

I have been a Marillion fan for about 4 years and have waited for the chance to see them, they did not disappoint! Amazing stage presence! Premium guitaring and out of this world solos especially "Neverland" I still am trying to comprehend the complexity and awesomness of the night! A Must Go See concert,

I've seen a lot of Marillion shows, both in the US and in England, and this was very near the top of the list. Near-perfect set list and an inspired performance. Well done, boys!

On the last night of Marillion's 2012 North American tour Marillion gave a spectacular performance to the enthusiastic crowd at The Fillmore. Playing for almost two and a half hours, the band were on stellar form from opening numbers Splintering Heart and Cover My Eyes to the last notes of the third encore (Happiness Is The Road). This was my first time to attend a show at The Fillmore and I was impressed with the acoustics and the overall appeal of the venue. I would definitely recommend this place to my friends.

Marillion hasn't toured the US since 2004. Saw them at the Fillmore back then, but this time they just rocked!. I go to lots of concerts, but this was one of the best ones I've seen this year. Opening band quite impressive, espcially their copy version of Brain Damage from Pink Floyd. Marillion didn't take the stage until 10:15 so I knew it was going to be a late night. Started with Splintering Heart. I had my doubts with the next song, Cover My Eyes as H looked a bit stoned or drunk and seemed to flub some lyrics, but he kicked it into gear after this and they were on fire the rest of the night. Great sound ( as usual at the Fillmore). Played 2 encores and most people figured they were done, but alas, they came out for a 3rd encore, doing Happiness is the road with a great fadeout to end the show at 12:45. 2 1/2 hour performance. Only bummer was I had a 2 + hour drive back home.

If you would like to spend some time listening to a band that is total entertainment then I suggest that you take any opportunity that you can to go see Marillion. They are all accomplished musicians with a long, continuous history of producing very different music together. Each song has it's own story to tell and to see them live is truly UNFORGETTABLE! They produce a show that will top any that you have seen. I don't mean by special effects or anything of that nature but their performance of the music itself. The band gives 110% to their loyal fans. The Paradise Rock Club was ok. The venue was intimate and it was wonderful to be so close to the band but I wish that there was some seating. The audience was one big Marillion famiy! I was also fortunate enough to meet some of the band members after the show and that is a memory that I will not soon forget.

"and the crowd sang all the songs"... what an exciting night to remember. After following Marillion since the early 80's and collecting all of their albums and cd's my wife and I drove to Boston Mass from Florida to see my favorite band. We stood, cheered, sang and clapped for the entire 2 1/2 hr performance finally ending after 2 encores. The sound quality get better as the night wore on, keyboard volume never did get loud enough but the vocals and guitar work were great. Steve R. was excellent , Pete was energetic, Ian celebrated his birthday, and Steve H. was as strange as ever. what a great night.

The best band you never heard of is what I tell most who look at me with that glazed eye when they hear me say Marillion, definitely one of the best whether you've heard of them or not - they are heart & soul completely invested in their music, their craft & it is truly amazing, quite simply, really very good. The Opera House is a cool old building, but it kinda ends there for me, ... no seating, standing only, was a drag & I semi dreaded going there just for the foreknowledge of this, & only attending because otherwise, I was not going to see Marillion this time around, .... It's a small theatre, & it was nice, very cool to be close to the stage & interact with the band, though the air conditioning was completely not up the the task of a three quarter full house - it was hot in there, ... Uncomfortable!!!, The boys in the band were more than drenched in sweat, I'm not sure that this did not rob them of some of their spark, their magic, though they soldiered on through the extreme sauna like heat regardless- So, simply put, I would not be in a hurry to re-visit this venerable venue, ... ever, I would, however, travel on to the next or previous venue to see Marillion, Any Day, ... They are that good.

Marillion began in the 1980s as a "Genesis meets Pink Floyd" style prog rock band, and while they still have some proggy leanings, they have matured into a more soulful, mainstream rock band, steadily releasing great new material that, sadly, goes largely un-noticed in the U.S.. This can make their live shows a bit hit or miss, depending on which part of their catalog you favor. At Irving Plaza, they performed two solid shows that combined both styles well. The band was in great form and played a lot of great songs, including Kayleigh, their only arguable "hit" in the U.S.

A truly amazing show held unded the terrible conditions. The venue had no AC on a scorcher of a day, and several people up front fainted from the heat. However, the band powered through it to deliver an energetic and dynamic performance. You on the West Coast - GO SEE SEE THIS SHOW.
