Not only was he fantastic, as expected he would be, but the band was truly great as well. Got to meet all 4 of them after the show & they were all so down to earth. He sang all the Great songs we have come to love, although I would have liked to hear some from his Monkee days. Great all around!

Paul Wargelin said it best: "Sharing his "Movies of the Mind" with a very receptive and appreciative audience, Michael Nesmith and his band performed a twenty song set that took us on a journey through his fifty year career. Setting the mood with slice of life narratives before each song, Nez and company got things swinging with "Calico Girlfriend" and "Little Red Rider," delivered some touching poignant moments with "Propinquity (I've Just Begun to Care)," "Some of Shelley's Blues," and an especially heartbreaking "Different Drum," got everyone clapping and dancing along with "Cruisin' (Lucy and Ramona and Sunset Sam)," "Dance," and "Tonite," turned introspective and ethereal for "Yellow Butterfly," "Light," and "Rays" and ended with a rocking finale of "Grand Ennui," "Rising in Love," and "Listen to the Band." In both his Spring tour and this one, Nez and his band (bassist Joe Chemay, drummer Paul Leim, keyboardist Boh Cooper, and Chris Scruggs on guitar, mandolin, and pedal steel) play with a vitality and--for me--an emotional resonance that has made all of Nez's concerts the most unique shows I've ever experienced." I Concur!!! A truly great evening. And the Meet & Greet was warm and wonderful!

Michael Nesmith was in fine form. He performed for two hours with a solid backing band. At age 70 Mike looks as if he might be Pete Townshend\u2018s long lost wise and friendly brother. Nesmith surprised me by setting the scene for each song with a short story about the people who were the subject of each song and their situation at the time. The little vignettes were quite visual in nature as well as illuminating. He pretty much covered his entire career, beginning with a Monkees song ( Papa Gene s Blues from their first LP) and performing a song (or two or three) from most of his solo albums. He also played his first cover hit. It wasn t Mike covering someone else s song; it was a song Nesmith wrote that became Linda Ronstadt\u2018s first hit with The Stone Poneys: Different Drum . Michael Nesmith could still hit the sweet falsettos of Joanne . He came off as a truly sensitive artist, wise, gentle and funny, and a real gentleman. That show was the second show of his national tour, so if you get a chance, by all means see him.

I saw the 2nd night of Mike s 2013 solo tour at the Canyon club near L.A. Since I have seen Mike alone before, I thought I knew what to expect. However, this was totally different and very exciting. Mike had a tight & structured set list. But for each song, Nez has created a little vignette. He has written a small story to set up each song. It was a real unique way to see these tunes. For many songs, I have my own past memory to relate to. But Nez helped us along with his own creativity. He did many of his solo classics, with only one Monkees tune Papa Gene s blues . Mike was in great voice, and had no trouble with the falsetto on Joanne . He performed I ve just begun to care , Some of Shelly s blues , Silver Moon , Rio , Crusin and Laugh kills lonesome . He did the title song from Rays , and a three song medley from the Prison . Not a fan favorite, but it did show how his music has evolved over the years. As Mike said, this show features his songwriting for the last 50 years. He closed out the night with a cool tribute to Red Rhodes, featuring his original 1st National band recording. For me, the big difference between this tour and his last one 21 year ago was Nez. In 1982, he was very serious with his music. Now, there is such a joy that emanates from Nez. You can tell his love for performing again, and the love the audience provided. It s so great to see Nez happy & content. With no fanfare, Micky was in the VIP section. He cheered his partner all night long. Welcome back to the concert stage Mike!. We ve missed your humor and creative artistry

The Evening was Magic!!! Michael Nesmith is the epitome of a showman. Accompanied by a wonderful group of musicians, Papa Nez exhibited his varied musical gifts and styles throughout the years. Beginning with one MONKEES tune to warm up the crowd. He then created a vision for each song and drew the audience in by using very descriptive vignettes. This allowed the audience to take a peek into the mind of Michael Nesmith. What an amazing evening!!

Mr. Nesmith has not played a local solo gig since his one-nighter at the Wadsworth almost twenty years ago.... The Nez did not let us down. He came out on time, smiling and played a very very nice 16 song set..... An Anthology of his years in music. He also treated us to his visions of what each song meant to him in a way a movie might play out in ones mind..... Seeing Nez play, is sadly not very often, but it is worth every second of the wait, one of our most under-rated musicians, and very sadly, he and his former partners are not in the rock hall of fame is total rubbish..... I hope you agree. The only bad part of the evening was the way the meet and greet packages were handled.. I get it, Video Ranch handled the, but no one knew anything, and the location of the show, well, lets just say I prefer not to go back to that venue......

In writing this review I am wondering how many more times Michael Nesmith will be performing. The Birchmere was the last stop on this tour and his remarks at the end of the show seemed like a sincere good-bye to his fans. The show itself contained, it seemed, all of the significant songs that long-time fans have loved over the years. He introduced each song by describing a scene that set the stage for the song(s) to come. It was quite effective and gave a better understanding of him. His voice sounded great and his band was excellent, particularly the keyboard player and the multi-instrumentalist on the guitars & mandolin. While it is true that his songs were not chart-toppers in their day, his contributions to music and, particularly, music video were significant. It is too bad that most people don't know that he is so much more than a former Monkee. If it turns out that he goes back on tour, I highly recommend that you familiarize yourself with his work and, then, go to see him. His work is thoughtful & creative. It might be too subtle for some, but, for those who are willing to invest some thought of their own, the investment will be rewarded.

Mike Nesmith made a triumphant return to the stage with this long awaited solo tour. His energy, passion, and the heartfelt nature of the music shined through in his genuine performance. I was lucky enough to see him twice and to also obtain a meet and greet pass for the Somerville show. Meeting him was a great experience, same as watching him perform. When I was talking to him, he made me feel like the only person in the room. A must see!

Mike Nesmith was the #1 performer on my bucket list to see that I'd never seen previously. It goes without saying I was beside myself when I finally had the chance to see him perform as part of the Monkees this past December. This show was the first time I ever had seen him solo (Which means I now have seen all four Monkees solo!) . The audience was one of the best audiences I ever saw at a concert...you could hear a pin drop whenever Papa Nez was talking on stage. Show was much better than I'd have ever thought possible.

I wanted to see Michael Nesmith perform because he was in the Monkees once upon a time. Recently I have read his Facebook posts and have been impressed with his writing. This guy is an original thinker and he knows how to put these eccentric thoughts into words. He introduced each song by painting a picture of images to set the scene. He creates the visual, and then sings the song, and it is a unique approach. He played his solo country songs, most of which I had heard for the first time. This was the last stop on his first concert tour in 20 years, so you'll have to catch him next time around. Ex-Wonder Woman Lynda Carter doesn't have to wait; she was sitting a few tables away looking very beautiful.

Mike Nesmith could easily make lots of money and enjoy lots of adulation by trading more on his time with the Monkees. But that was just a small part of a long and distinguished career in music and movies, and keeping it all in perspective makes for a terrific show.

Michael Nesmith did not do a concert last night at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA. Instead he captivated the respectful and enthusiastic audience at the sold out venue with a brilliant musical narrative that cleverly wove together romantic stories with songs that spanned his 50 year career, all of which were compositions he wrote. Even though some of the material was quite vintage from the 1960s, every performance sounded fresh and contemporary thanks to the infinitely talented musicians (both living and dead) he assembled to accompany him on this 105 minute journey. Yes, one of the musicians passed away several years ago, but through today's digital magic and because of this guy's ingenious ability to play pedal steel guitar like no one else ever could, his spectacular performances were heard perfectly through the speakers on certain pivotal solos. O. J. Rhodes was given the acknowledgement he earned as being a part of this band. The living musicians were also incredibly skillful. The entire experience was transcendental laced with humor and emotional warmth. Michael's musical poetry is sheer genious. I salute his awesome aesthetic integrity

It was an unusual but wonderful concert. Michael Nesmith is far from a great singer and his songs (all of the songs he performed are ones he wrote) are generally good but not great (although Different Drum is great as recorded by Linda Ronstadt), but it doesn't really matter. He's a gentle soul who clearly loves telling people his stories and sharing the songs and a bit of his history. Part of what made it unusual was that he introduced every song with a "setting", e.g. this is the 50's, a couple is at a table at a Parisian cafe, they're both looking for different things from the relationship. With many other artists I would've been muttering OK, enough, just do the song. With Mr. Nesmith, it was a big part of his charm that he would take the time and effort to paint this mental picture of each song. Also, there was plenty of music. He has a great, supportive band, with particularly good contributions from the keyboardist and from Chris Scruggs on guitar, lap steel, and mandolin. The musical range was wide, from country rock, sort of soft jazz, rock, and one medley (which he explained was part of a soundtrack for a sci-fi short story he wrote) that sounded like James Taylor accompanied by the Moody Blues or Pink Floyd. Although I gave the show 4 stars, not everyone would love a show like this, and some could have wished for him to rock more, but if approached more as a theater show (for DC area locals, think Arena Stage), with music than a rock concert, you could love it.

The Michael Nesmith show at the Birchmere was exactly as promised, a reflection on his solo career. He did open with Papa Gene Blues stating that it was one of the first songs he ever wrote and that it made it into a couple of Monkees episodes. That was the first and only reference to the Monkees. The rest of the evening was spent examining his solo efforts and giving the back stories and setting behind his songs. He was in good spirits and shared the stage nicely with his band. A good show and pleasant experience.

It was a wonderful intimate show! Not only was the music fantastic, but Mike showed that at the age of 70, he still have a beautiful, smooth twang to his voice and can still hit those high notes. Mike also showcased his marvelous ability to tell an eloquent story before each song, which heightened the experience of the show. If you want to see a true singer/song writer in action, go see Michael Nesmith!!!!

Excellent sampling of Mike Nesmith's almost 50 years in music! From Monkees to his solo work performed letter perfect with an ace band backing him. This could teach quite a few musicians just what it's about. Great choice of songs and excellent sound. A perfect evening. Only downside was his partaking of the growing trend of "meet and greet". It cheapens the artist when fans are asked to pay an additional $50 above ticket price ($100) to spend 2 min. with artist, get autographs, and have a picture taken. This is why we don't go to conventions. There must be a better way!

What other Monkee could play a 20 song set with only one Monkees song tossed off at the outset (and substantially rearranged at that!)? Mike is a delightful presence, his band was great, and the way he placed each song in a narrative, cinematic "setting" really added flavor to the evening. Still, the show wasn't sold out and it bothered me to receive an offer for $25 seats the day before the event, when i had paid 3 times that amount for my seats.

I have been a big fan of Michael Nesmith for the past 3 decades. I have enjoyed his work with the Monkees and solo career. This performance was an excellent overview of his career in songwriter. He entertained the audience with stories and vignettes to provide contextualization for his songs. Michael's singing was in top-notch form, and the band was cooking. This was really one of the happiest moments of my life to see this show in the venue of Somerville theatre.

I have been a huge Michael Nesmith fan dating back to his Monkees days. I've been fortunate to see Papa Nez in solo concert on three different occasions and he has never disappointed. This latest show at the Somerville Theatre in Somerville, MA, was no exception. In his seemingly understated manner, Nesmith took the audience on a chronological tour of some of his greatest songs, painting an image for each song as a movie vignette. It was simply a brilliant evening of entertainment and I would gladly go see him again if the opportunity ever presents itself. The man is a musical genius. By all means, go to one of his shows. You will not be disappointed.

The concert started with a nice round of applause. He started out with the only Monkees song of the set. Although he played some songs that were tried out during his tenor as a Monkee. I was very glad to see he had a smoking hot back up band. Also a proper drummer instead of a percussionist like he had twenty years ago, when I saw him last. The small club was a beautiful old theatre of a long time ago. There was a nice atmoshere all around. The people at the club were nice and friendly. There was also some good food serviced(and yes, I something bad to eat, loved it). Mike had some nice little stories along with every song he sang. All in all, it was a great experience to have. This happened three days before my father passed away. I even had a cell phone photo that I will try and attach here. It was one the last images I showed to my father before he passed. I am glad I went. This concert was supposed to be held at the Palace of Fine Arts but it was moved here, and I am glad it did. One because it was tinny bit closer and two ,because it was a nicer venue. Go check his show out if you can.

A great concert! The band was top notch and what can be said about Michael Nesmith! A talented singer, songwriter and musician. He wound the songs together with story telling and sang a song from each of his albums. (Although I was disappointed that he didn't add a song from "Tantamount to Treason" in his set.) It was an hour and a half of great music by a great man.

My wife and I had seen the Monkees reunion tour last December and had an amazing time, but when we learned that Michael Nesmith was doing a small solo tour we just knew we had to be there. It was everything we'd hoped, and more. When he came out at the start of the evening, he was so pleased to see the packed room (which was the case throughout the tour), and seemed genuinely touched by the reception we gave him. Papa Gene's Blues was the only Monkees song he did; the rest were from his solo career. To make the evening more special, he explained that each song was like a mini-movie in his mind when he wrote them, so we were given a full cinematic-literary introduction to each, and that lent so much more to the meaning and intent behind each one. His voice can't reach some of those lovely high notes he used to hit, but he compensated for that by lowering the key on some songs. It was clear he was having a wonderful time, and with this being the last show of the tour I think he might've been giving it just a bit more. And at the "conversation reception" he was charming, attentive and seemed interested in what everyone had to say. The groundrules were that he would sign just one Monkees item per person, but unlimited solo stuff, whether CD, albums, books. So I brought Headquarters -- my original mono Colgems copy from 1967 -- which already had Micky's signature on it from a DragonCon a few years ago. Then I had three solo albums, one of which is a really hard to find live album called "Live at the Palais." He seemed very impressed when I told him I bought it new in NYC when it came out. Then he asked me if I had his other live recording, "Live at the Britt." When I said I had the DVD of that, he smiled. All in all, the guy is a gent, and it was just an absolute pleasure to spend a few minutes to talk to him. Great great night.

The Legendary MIKE NESMITH has written some of the greatest songs such as The Girl I Knew Somewhere. I saw him at the Birchmere. He had quite a talented band behind him and he is still great on guitar. Although he does put on a great show and we all love him, but his voice is not quite what it used to be. Another problem is his arrangement which includes his use of melody (or lack of). Perhaps he is working around the arrangements to keep him from singing as hard. When he played his best songs, it would take a minute to recognize them because he would work around the melody. But in anyones book, you go for the melody. As much of it as you can. A good example is Different Drum. There is no reason not to sing it like Linda did. That is about the best arrangement you can give the song, so why do it any other way? I do feel that MIKE can try harder. Always your fan MIKE.

Mike Nesmith gave more than one would expect. Voice soaring seeming effortlessly. His band was at the top of the top notch players. These guys were Good. Rarely are concerts so beautifully sounding. Nor are audiences so respectful and reverential to each word spoken setting the songs up. A Magic performance, even though he didn't play "Magic". Last time Nez blessed us was 1992 at NYC Lone Star. Concerts like this don't happen more than once or twice in a lifetime. I hope thrice once day.

As life-long fan of Michael Nesmith, my dream of seeing him perform live came true April 5, 2013 at St. Paul's Fitzgerald Theater. This was his first tour in 20 years. Best know for being a "Monkee" Mike started the show with "Papa Gene's Blues," the first song he ever wrote and one that was featured on the first Monkees album and on the show. From there, he played nothing but songs from his solo albums and those he made with The FIrst National Band (post Monkees). It was an utterly enthralling concert. He would set up each song with a little story chronicling the romantic trials and triumphs of a mythical "he" and "she" during different decades starting from the 1920s to the present. Each story explained the song that followed; many were melancholy stories about the pain of lost love, the futility of romance, the parting of ways. But some were heartening. I wish I could recreate here every story he told, but I can't. One line in particular I recall is: "It takes two. Two to tango. Two to divorce. But it only takes one word of love to save a family." This was before he launched into "Some of Shelly's Blues," a song about a woman who was looking out the window, then caught her reflection and decided that she was aging too fast, that her life was going nowhere, and that she wanted a divorce. Upon telling her husband, he surprised her not by begging or resisting, but by essentially telling her she is free to go because he wants nothing more than for her to be happy because he loves her so much. I've been listening to these songs for literally decades, but these little stories he told opened up a whole new level of understanding and connection for me. There were a few times that I forgot to clap after a song had ended because I was still pondering how deep and meaningful his words and lyrics were. The concert itself was laid back and intimate. He talked to the audience often and seemed genuinely appreciative of the applause--even a little embarrassed when he received two standing ovations. He did one encore and the show lasted about an hour and 45 minutes. It was an absolutely wonderful show and am glad to have had the opportunity to see it. The list of cities on his tour is very short, so it was nice that he chose St. Paul. I wish you could have been there to share the experience! The only down side (for lack of a better term) to the evening was the souvenir stand was essentially sold out of T-shirts well before the show even started. On a scale of one to five green wool hats, with five being the best. I give this a 5.

Fantastic Live show! Nez played songs I NEVER thought I would hear LIVE! From 'Nine Times Blue' to 'Joanne' and 'Some of Shelly's Blues' plus Wonderful stories to set up each set of songs. Unfortunately, Nez DIDN'T Deliver after the show ... unless you were one of the very select few able to get for a pass to the Recpetion Conversations. These days Nez doesn't seem to care about the fans who supported him over the years when the rest of the world wouldn't give him the TIME OF DAY. Apparently he's only interested the ones with CASH IN HAND!

A great show indeed. Had dinner with Nez next door to the show. He is such a nice guy. One of the best shows of the year at this theatre. Got to the area around 5pm and ran into the Nez out side near the front doors of the theatre. We then went into the restaurant. After , we then took our seat and for sure , this was the best Nez concert to date. He really is a great talent.....

Having been a fan of Nesmith for nearly a quarter of a century now, I never thought I would get the chance to see him perform live, especially given the rarity of his appearances (his last tour was in the early 1990s). That all changed on the night of Tuesday, November 12, 2013, when he stopped by bergenPAC in Englewood, New Jersey, halfway through his Movies of the Mind tour. Fresh off a late 2012 Monkees tour in the wake of band member and British heartthrob Davy Jones's death, as well as brief solo tours in the United Kingdom and America, Nesmith is on a roll. Nesmith was in top form and rocked much harder at age 70 (going on 71) than he did at age 49 on his last tour, based on the double CD I have of that tour as well as footage I've seen on the Internet. He played all of the familiar fan favorites, from Joanne from the early 1970s to Rays from his 2006 album of the same name, in between providing a nice range of country, folk, pop, and rock music. Nesmith played his signature twelve-string acoustic guitar, with long-time band mate Joe Chemay on bass, Boh Cooper on keyboards, and long-time band mate Paul Leim on drums. The band also featured Chris Scruggs, the grandson of bluegrass banjo legend Earl Scruggs, on pedal steel guitar, acoustic and electric guitars, and mandolin. Scruggs was the musical prodigy of the night, sometimes playing two or more instruments in the same song. All the musicians were excellent and did a standout job bringing Nesmith's songs to glorious and exuberant life. Nesmith also introduced each song or group of related/similar songs with narratives that set the scene for each musical tale, hence the tour moniker Movies of the Mind. This feature of the performance fostered intimate camaraderie between Nesmith and the audience and made it more of a personal experience, like hearing campfire tales from an old friend. I took my folks to the show (Center Orchestra Row N Seats 101-103), and they both enjoyed it immensely. They are both in Nesmith's age range (Nesmith is four months older than my dad). If you like Michael Nesmith or just want to see a living legend in the prime of his twilight, make it a priority to see him live.

Decent venue. It took a couple of songs to get the mix right, but after that, it was pretty special. Not too loud, which is kind of nice, for once. Mike pulled from all of his solo albums. He also set up each song or group of songs with a quick narrative that tried to put you where the songs was taking place...it was really nice. His band was pretty tight and Mikes voice was great and only got stronger as the night went on. If you were a Monkees fan looking for a few of the hits, you were disappointed. The only song that Mr. Nesmith played that was on any Monkees album was 'Listen to the Band', but it was the version from his "Loose Salute" album. It was a really good show; my first time seeing Mike.

Michael assembled an excellent band for his latest concert tours. After being away from the live scene for years he come outs and plays his song over the past 50 years. The night mostly went chronologically through his career, focussing on his solo work. Mike sounded great. He would give a little story to set the scene before each song or sets of songs, Movies of the Mind. The end set of songs rocked hard and sounded great. Don't hesitate to get tickets. It will be a fun night.

I have wanted to see Michael Nesmith live for years. I finally got the chance. I was pleased with my seats and the price I paid for them. The show was fantastic. The venue was very nice. I would see a show there again. Nesmith sounded great and I loved the narration that lead into each song, diptych, or medley. He played many of my favorite tunes. My only criticism was the merch. table. I would have liked to see more of a variety of t-shirts, CDs and vinyl options. Perhaps more from his VideoRanch site. In the end, I was there to hear him sing live and I did and it was fantastic. Overall, I give the show 4.5 out 5 stars.

Michael Nesmith was fantastic. His theme for the tour (movies in my mind) was obviously lost on some audience members who kept yelling out song titles demanding he play them. He gave a description prior to each song or set of songs to "set the mood," but it got ruined a few times by the jerk in the cheap seats. So disappointing, since seeing Nesmith outside of LA is relatively rare. Disappointing too, that The venue didn't do more to quiet the audience.

This was a fantastic evening. Mr. Nesmith is charming, wry, insightful and a talented musician and songwriter. He introduced his songs with the movie setting in his head that inspired them. An inspired idea, presentation, and evening. Plus his genuine appreciation of our applause was refreshing.

I saw Mike Nesmith last year in NYC, and he was great. This time around, he was AWESOME. I was fortunate to have 3rd row center seats, so I was literally in front of him. Him and his super talented band played for an hour and 45 minutes straight. With the conclusion of each song, like the true humble and gentlemanly Texan that he is, Mike would take a step back from the mic and graciously bow and give accolades to his band. He smiled the whole night and everyone was in such a great mood. Along with every song, there was a vignette. He played all of his non-Monkees hits, and his voice was in perfect form. He hit those high notes (Joanne) beautifully, as well as the lower notes and everything in between. It was a great night

Expected to hear atleast some of the Monkees classics. Instead, I was inundated with horrible country western music. A true disappointment!!!

Blessed amazing, heart moving stories in song that fill the senses and lighten the soul. If you thought that Michael was about his past, you've missed the boat...his solo music is a gift...filled with tales of love found, love lost, exotic locales, meaning, racing, meandering tales of wanderlust and coming home. Thanks...for the ride...

For anyone who appreciates his music, his intellect, and his individuality find a venue and go see him. Nesmith has not toured much in recent years, but you would never know it based on the quality of his performance. His band is exceptional, the arrangements first class, and his delivery was just a lot of fun. He told stories to set a context for his songs. He played the slower ballads early in the show, and as the show progressed he started to rock. He played them all - Cruisin', Grand Ennui, Joanne, Shelley's Blues - you get the picture. He seems to be enjoying himself. Hopefully, he will keep touring.

Actually the word boring isn't boring enough to describe the show. The 2 minute intros to each song put the nail in it. Had to leave after 30 minutes.

We greatly looked forward to this event and it did NOT disappoint. From beginning to end, Michael Nesmith treated the crowd not only to a musical event but a journey of the imagination, setting up each story with a "mind movie" describing the events leading to the song. As I looked around, the audience was transfixed and so quiet as they listened to each syllable in the story. It was poignant, funny, and musically, the band was wonderful! Mr. Nesmith's vocals were solid and the enjoyable nuances of his voice at age 70 are still present....so entertaining. He had a wonderful time with the audience and seemed quite touched at his response.

Excellent, excellent band he has now - saw Nez at VP years ago but this concert was simply the best. Hope for a new CD from him with this particular band. Red Rhodes would be proud, Chris Scruggs is a fine musician, as are they all. What a great singer-songwriter, poet, great businessman he is. Nesmith does only his own tunes, in a new exciting way. GO see him. So nice to have an older, well behaved audience!

While Michael's voice has lost a little of his upper register range, he still hit the falsetto notes in Joann pretty impressively. The set list was an excellent cross section of his solo (and First National Band) catalog, with most all of the expected "must haves" included. The assembled band was incredible. The updated arrangements and instrumentation were beautiful, and did not venture so far that they lost the original feel of the songs. Nesmith's narratives were just right - not so long as to detract from the pace of the show, and just enough to set the stage for the song-stories.

My son and I had SO much fun at this concert! Second row seats! Could not believe we were that close to Nesmith! He told little stories before every song. The audience was so excited and gave him several standing ovations (which he deserved-he was THAT good)!

I've seen the Nesmith-less Monkees in concert a few times and always wanted to see Mike Nesmith. I was a huge fan of Mike's work with the band as well as his "Elephant Parts"-era music. I knew I would enjoy myself, but I was surprised at how amazing the show was. Nesmith wove intricate stories as a lead-in for his music. They created a movie in my mind - the soundtrack was the Nez's wonderful songs. The backing band was superb and I loved the new arrangements of classic songs like "Different Drum" and the Monkees' classic "Listen to the Band".

What a treat to see Mike Nesmith and his crack band, playing songs he has written over his entire career (all except one from his career outside the Monkees). Before each number, Nesmith gives a brief introduction, describing the visual scene he had in mind when writing the song (or maybe what he imagines now when performing it). "Different Drum" is cast as a conversation between two lovers in a Paris cafe, and the arrangement for the song was a charming re-imaging as a chanson with accordion (via keyboard emulation) and mandolin (a real one played by a sideman). Several performances were medleys or groupings of two or three songs that were similar in style or theme. Most of the other songs stuck pretty close to their familiar arrangements, but the band gave everything an extra bite. "The Grand Ennui" was suitably ominous. "Cruisin" was great and a good deal heavier than the original recording. "Dance" is a surprisingly effective disco number, of all things, and sounded great. Best of all for me was a rave-up version of "Listen to the Band" (the only Monkees song) that closed the show. Nesmith's songs all reflect a high degree of intelligence and craft, and seem to get better with repeated listenings. Nesmith will be 71 in December but his performance doesn't concede much if anything to age. His plain-spoken vocalizing sounds about the same as it always has, and he actively strummed his 12 string acoustic guitar, but left any fancy solo work to a sideman. (I think I have read that he claimed his guitar skills had suffered due to lack of practice and/or problems with his hands, but he appeared to have no problems playing his 12 string, an instrument that can be a challenge to the most adept guitarists). Mike graciously gives up the spotlight when his bandmates are soloing and takes care to introduce and credit the band at the beginning and end of the show. Mike came out on stage in a sharp-looking medium gray suit, darker gray shirt, and white tie. The best part of his outfit was his shoes, which were covered with multicolored sequins - how fun! Mike's down-to-earth nature is reflected in his lack of pretension about his appearance -- he looks great but there is no mistaking that he is an older fellow. With a receding hairline (unbolstered by toupee, implants, combover, or hat) and a little more jowly than in his youth (no facelifts here), he still possesses clear bright eyes, a trim figure, a welcoming smile, and the same old wit and intelligence. I hope I am in as good shape when I am his age (not all that far away). Anyone with any interest in the Monkees (despite him not playing many Monkees' songs) or Nesmith's solo career should take the opportunity to see him in concert, you may not have another chance. One last note: I know Mike is doing fine financially, but I wonder if he's making any money on this tour! He had a huge tour bus, a four piece band, lots of instruments/gear, and several techies/roadies with him. Tickets were about $32, with a 500 seat house, so a total of $16,000 in ticket sales. By the time you take out the venue's cut, taxes, paying all of the others in the tour, expenses, etc., there might not be anything left. More reason to appreciate this very classy performer for putting on a first-class show. Thanks Mike.
