Snakehips

SNAKEHIPS IN CONCERT:Snakehips are left-field downtempo synthesists of several genres, including rap, electronic, and a little R&B. The U.K. producers, Oliver Lee and James Carter, gained gradual notice from 2012 to 2014 with remixes of tracks by Willie Hale ("Groove On"), Wild Belle ("It's Too Late"), Bondax ("Gold"), Banks ("Warm Water"), and the Weeknd ("Wanderlust").

The only memorable thing about this event is how bad it was. Openers were uninspiring and had poor energy. When Snakehips came on after an extended silence from the last opener, the set turned out to be just a sampling of pop hits with overwhelming bass added, interspersed with snippets of their own tracks. I tried to wait and see if things would get better, but once "Crank Dat" by Soulja Boy came on, I had to leave. Only after the event did I find that the other half of Snakehips was not there because he was recovering from surgery, although I'm doubtful his presence could turn my perspective around. In my opinion, if you don't have enough original material to create a full, live set, there's no need to tour, much less charge $40 for my time. This is the first event I've left because I was bored to tears.

By following these simple steps, you too can burn 500 calories with us: 1. See advertisement for Snakehips concert in your hometown of Honolulu, HI, where almost no other concerts are held. 2. Get your friends hyped about Snakehips concert because concerts are fun. 3. Purchase Snakehips concert tickets for $43.95 each. 4. Wait over three months to attend the concert. 5. Get to the venue before 9pm, when entrance to the concert was supposed to begin, according to our ticket details. 6. Stand outside the venue for over an hour in the drizzle and weed air. 7. Finally enter, only to wait behind a curtain for twenty minutes. 8. Walk in when the curtains open and watch an unnamed Asian man DJ for an hour, thinking he was the opening act. 9. Feet are in pain at this point, but then have to continue standing through Promnite's performance which lasted for an entire one and a half hours, twice the amount of time that Snakehips performed. 10. Listened to Promnite say "just a few more songs" at 30 minutes, then 45 minutes, then 60 minutes, then 75 minutes, before he finally finished his set. 11. Then we stood there for ten minutes in awkward silence because after two an a half hours, Snakehips were still not ready to perform. 12. Finally. Finally, a white man comes onto stage and shines a flashlight into our eyes and we blinked in confusion. 13. And then finally, Snakehips were on. For 45 minutes. Our entire experience lasted five hours and yet we only got to see Snakehips for less than an hour. 14. We also watched as Snakehips grew progressively drunker on stage with their beers and alcohols. Pretty sure they were already drunk before they even got on stage. 15. And don't even get me started on the encore. It wasn't even Snakehips. It was Promnite. The Asian man was more enjoyable. All in all, I want to thank the maintenance crew and security for their excellent service, pouring water directly into our mouths and blowing us with fans after our pain and trying to hype us up. They increased our rating from zero stars to one star.

I was standing for at least an hour and a half before the opening act even came onto stage! I paid to enjoy a performance from Snakehips, not to look at an empty stage. Honestly, in total, I stood for four hours for an hot performance. Totally bogus.

My friend and I were wicked excited to see them but they were just two guys playing other people's music. Save your money and just listen to the radio or Spotify.

The concert was okay when Snakehips finally came on. The concert started at 8 PM and Snakehips didn't come on until 10:45 PM. That is almost 3 hours. For those 3 hours, there were 2 opening acts that played for 1 hour each. By the time, Snakehips came on I was so ready to leave. I was not happy about the timing of it. Especially on a Wednesday night.

Pomo was one of the openers for Snakehips and played a great set from nu disco, house, downtempo, and generally just great songs. Met him after the show he was a great guy, no problem taking pics. Snakehips was astounding. They are now on my must see list everytime they come to NY or play a festival I am attending. They started with slower trap, hip hop. and R&B like tunes. They played all their popular hits while mixing in not so well known by killer tunes. The best part is they brought out Tory Lanez and played thier collab "Dimelo" live. Tory sang one more acapella and another track. They show was unbelievable. My only gripe was the venue itself. Bowery is smallish but for a small venue the sound was very lacking. We were in the front and the volume was maybe at 70%. I usually bring acoustic ear plugs to reduce the noise but I didnt need them and wish the volume was played louder. Not sure if this was an artist decision or venue decision. The top bar is cash only and the bottom bar takes cards but has a $20 minimum. One of the bartenders downstairs was actually very rude when I asked about the card policy. Otherwise all the staff was great.
