The Roots

Three-time Grammy Award winning hip hop legends The Roots have released ten albums and recorded with some of the biggest names in the music business. Their influence reaches far beyond the hip-hop world, though, as their recent collaborative tour with old-school post-punk rocker, Elvis Costello, proved. While their recordings continue to earn praise and awards, it’s in concert that The Roots really display their chops. Ticket holders to one of their shows are treated to a lesson in hip-hop that shows off the genre’s history and scope, with elements of jazz, rap, funk and even metal.

I brought a group of students to the opening of the new, Legacy Museum. I was fortunate to be able to also take them to the concert. The performers were all good; Dave Matthews and Stevie Wonder surprised us, Jon Batiste and Usher wowed us, but Kirk Franklin absolutely brought down the house! His energy was infectious! I hear he is a gospel singer, well then, I've just converted!

Best live show I have seen this year. The Roots have always been the premier live act to see. Excellent, thought provoking lyrics as well as top notch musicianship make this my favorite show of the year by far. Going to a Roots show is not just going to hear music, but it is more to feel like you are going to an event that is making history. This type of hip hop is too important to ignore. This band should always be supported by true fans everytime they tour because touring is where they make their living as album sales dont pay the bills anymore.

Overall I felt the show was great. The Roots played for about 2 hours and the energy was really great the entire time. The only complaints I might have is that the sound wasn't great and they didn't play enough older songs. It was hard to make out like the Sousaphone (who was fun to watch just the same) and also the emcee (Black Thought). And I've been a huge Roots fan since they dropped "Do You Want More?!?!??!?!?" (they're second joint) and they didn't play much songs off of either that album or the next one ("Illadelph Halflife"). But the Roots truely killed it and went through much of their last four or five albums and I had a great time. I would recomend a Roots show to just about any genere of music-head.

ive never been to a show quite like the roots, it was extremely original and alot of fun. i went in having no idea what to expect, and i left thinking that i will never see a hip hop show as good as that again. they played for two hours and played a ton of their own songs and 8 covers. each musician in the band also did their own solo which lasted about 5 to 10 minutes each and they were all incredible. each member of the band showed off how talented and origianal they all are. the show was very entertaining, but what really impressed me was how original the show was. every fan of hip hop should go see the roots play because it is an experiance like no other

The tubba player reminded me of halftime at football games at college. The roots always, alwys put on a show their ability to play convert classic hip hop into jazz, regga, swing and rock and roll is always impressive. Hip hop is always about expanding and the Roots truely expand when they create an album and bring their unique vibe and original style to the fans live it is alwys memorable.

1st Avenue was packed - and the Roots delivered for just under 2 hours. This was a more rock-oriented sound that previous Roots shows I have seen, with a bit more up-tempo renditions of some classics, but the crowd loved it. At this point Black Thought, ?estlove and the rest of the crew have and these sorts of shows down to a science.

The Roots really know how to put on a show. The music was great, and they kept things exciting, everything from individual jams to the occasional cover of a classic rock song. I've seen the Roots before, and have never been this upset by a show. I was super excited to see them, and ended up leaving super upset. If I wanted to go see a cover band I would have. Four of the bands set were cover songs such as Knight Rider, Jungle Boogie and Sweet Child O' Mine. The only great part of the night was the kick-ass drum solo between questlove and the percussionist.

The Roots are by far the best and most entertaining band to watch PERIOD. As for the show, I understand anticipation but they came on at 8pm and we were out there since 2pm. It was hotter than Africa outside. I was thankful the sun wasn't out most of the time. They are worth the wait but only after 2 songs, they brought on John Legend and he was good but more of a show closer. The ballads were killing me! I was tired enough as it was plus a lil' liquored up and I needed to jam! After came Wu-Tang but at that point it was 10pm and John had already sent me on my way. I missed the rest of the show. I couldn't hang anymore. I suggest next time they come on a bit earlier. All of the opening acts were pretty cool and I'm glad I was there for that but 8pm is way late. Maybe it would work better in a lawn setting where people aren't pushed up in front the stage and they can sit on blankets and what not. This was not that place. I would do it again no doubt but "sacrifice" the opeining acts and get there later.

I went to Fillmore on Friday night to see the roots. There was no opening act. And the show was supposed to start at 8. There was a DJ spinning and all his tracks sounded the same. No show of the roots at 9. Around 9:50, the DJ announces the roots and leaves the stage. Then he comes back a couple of minutes later and got booed. And he continued to spin till 10:30 which is when the roots finally decide to make an appearance. There was no apology. The energy was dead. If you must go on tour, please provide the fans with their $ worth or just stay home. So while the venue is a 2 stars, I will never again spend my $ on a roots concert again. It's a shame since I was a loyal fan all these years.

2nd worst concert experience for me ever......and I've seen my share of shows. I don't think I've ever wanted to leave a concert more than I did at this one after just a few songs. To be honest I didn't know much about The Roots. It didn't matter. I couldn't understand a word the guy was saying/singing/rapping. Every song sounded the same. I respect others that think they are great. I'm just surprised there were more than 100 people at the show. If they are great musicians (and I'm sure they are) their style of music is a complete waste of their talent.

This wasn't the Roots of my college years, but I guess they were okay. The venue was nice enough (the sunset and the bay were to the back of us), I LOVED the spotlight on each of the band members, but I didn't particularly care for the covers, which lasted probably an hour. At one point I thought BT was lip-synching, but maybe there was too much smoke in the air. I was there for the ROOTS, not for a cover band. That was a little disappointing.

First off, The Roots were phenomenal! Absolutely incredible show! We had no complaints about the sound or the show itself. We were very disappointed in how disorganized the venue itself was. We paid extra for parking that was at the entrance the signage was terrible and unclear as to where this parking space was. When we finally found it we were told it was full and were directed to a lot space 1/2 mile away. To top it off they didn t take our parking voucher and we had to pay again!

Common, The Roots, Usher, and others. Then a speech by Bryan Stevenson who is so inspiring. Then - more??? - yes, a whole set by the amazing STEVIE WONDER!! I had to sit way back on the wall under the trees - I could see the screens well and even the people on stage. But the SOUND - was the best. Common, Kirk Franklin, Dave Matthews, The Roots, Tosha Cobb, Jon Batiste, Brittany Howard, Valerie June, Usher, Greg Phillinganes, Robert Glasper, Alabama State University's choir, and six-eight year old performers (Mannish, from Atlanta), took the stage during the concert and rocked the house! I'll start by saying the crowd energy was kinda iffy the whole time, but it was the day after Xmas on what was probably a work night for most. The Roots themselves were... fine, but I at no point really felt like I was getting my money's worth. Very unclear why there were 11 musicians on the stage including two keyboardists and a 3rd very weird looking pale blonde dude awkwardly dancing around who would sometimes hit buttons on a couple of pad controllers. They actually gave him an extended "solo" where he screwed around on the pads on top of Prince's Purple Rain while most of the band took a breather. This was the extreme lowlight of the show. They mixed in some interesting covers with their own material, the latter consisting mostly of better known songs. The bassist handled vocal duties for any of Malik B's parts that came up (not many). I personally would have preferred maybe a little less filler, instrumental solos, and covers in order to hear more actual Roots songs, but there's something to be said for all the showmanship. The sound was probably the worst I've ever heard at HOB Boston. It was just a loud mess and was impossible to hear Dice Raw's lyrics half the time. The Roots aren't exactly a huge touring band these days given their day job, and I feel like the rust shows a bit in a concert performance. That's not to say these guys aren't pros and aren't good at what they do, but I think the asking price for a ticket is more indicative of their reputation than the quality of the show you're gonna get. Case in point is that it wasn't even sold out 45 minutes after doors opened...

I had a lot or fun! I went by myself, and I only went to see Jhene Aiko perform, and her performance was phenomenal! I also saw other artists perform, such as Rudimental, Janelle Monae, the Roots, and Snoop Dogg, who all had great performances as well. And for the most part, all the performances were on time!I ended up staying all day, even though I originally planned to leave after Jhene Aiko performed at 4:20. However, the food truck that I was waiting in line for over an hour (Samboni's or something like that) ran out of food! I was lucky to get one of the last cheese steaks that had left, but numerous people behind me were turned away. The drinks were way overpriced, but I got them anyway.Overall, I had fun, but I just wish the food and drink prices were cheaper, and that the food trucks provide enough food for everyone!!!! Other than that, I do feel like I got my money's worth!

My husband and I went to the concert as fans of the Roots, Snoop and Action Bronson. But, we left as fans of many more artists. We were downloading Roman GianArthur s album as he was performing and I was such a fan of the Bad Rabbits that I bought their t-shirt on the way out. Awesome line-up! The VIP experience was worth every single penny! The concierge service was impeccable. They worked hard running around for everyone all day and night - but they stayed friendly, helpful and personable from start to finish. The free BBQ at the end of the night was a delicious surprise. It was also great to have a more private viewing area. We cannot wait until next year!

A great experience of music across the genre that for me exploded once Janelle Monae took the stage. What a sight to catch her live performance and see firsthand an artist at work. The moves, the dance and band performance were all outstanding. The lead up acts singling out the War on Drugs was all magnificent climaxing with the quiet cool of the Roots featuring Snoop Dog. The venue from my understanding was enhanced from last year festival. An open field venue with a cool breeze coming off the water, overhead view of the skyline and bridges accented the atmosphere. The people were pleasant and the pricing not bad for food and goods. Overall a great time was had by all at least in my purview and well worth a second trip.

The line up featured a good variety of artists and music genres. The venue itself was nice, however it got dirty fast and was difficult to keep clean (there wasn't much of an attempt). Grimes, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were amazing. Getting the crowd involved, and keeping spirits high in the heat.

I hadn't heard of the concert before and am mad that I'm just learning of it. Even in the heat, this was one of the greatest concerts I've ever been to. The price can't be beaten and the acts were amazing. No matter what you like, this is a show for you. Energy, emotion, soul...this is one the best shows you can ever see. The crowd was manageable and well tamed, moving around the grounds wasn't too bad an getting to the venue was pretty easy. Get your tickets and get there next year!

This show was absolutely awesome and a wonderful way to ring in the New Year! Not only did the club provide New Years hats, beads, and horns but they also dropped balloons down on the crowd at midnight. IThe roots even came out and did an extra encore which was awesome! I was so pleased with everything at this show.

A 3 hour lyrically titillating musical journey... They had several guest appearances including the incomparable Bilal. Besides Charlie Wilson this summer, this was my best concert all year!

Great but Philadelphians can be a little rowdy. Many times, people were pushing & shoving to get closer to the front (although there was no room). The acts were amazing however, there were many long intermissions.

The Roots put on an awesome show at Patriots Place on 01/15/2011! I was a little disappointed the 12/30/2010 show was rescheduled for tonight's show but they defly made up for the inconvenience. They are dedicated not only to their craft but, the fans! I gotta say, every time I go to a show the band (especially Kamal-- keyboardist) goes above and beyond expectations. Coolest bunch of musicians you'd ever want to meet!

My boyfriend and I arrived at 12:30 pm and made sure to be in the front row in the middle of the stage. The concert started about 30 minutes late but luckily where we were standing was somewhat shady. I really have to say that ALL of the bands were fantastic. It was a long day but the experience I had was unforgetable. The Roots Picnic was hands down the best concert I have ever been to!!!!! I would highly recommend this venue if you are a hip hop fan and someone who appreciates music.

Another spectacular day of wonderful weather and great music on the waterfront in Illadelph. I wasn't too familiar with many of this years artists, but for the third year in a row there wasn't a moment of disappointment. The Roots proved once again that they are not only the hardest working band in show business but the most diverse. After playing a set of their own songs for at least an hour if not longer, they stayed on while John Legend came out to perform and backed him on every song. After John Legend you'd think The Roots would be done and exhausted from the heat. Nope, then Wu Massacre came out (Ghost, Rae, and Mr. Mef) and The Roots backed them on every song. Just goes to show you that even with working every night with Jimmy Fallon, they still find the time and effort to rehearse for this show and THEN learn to play all the songs in John Legend's set AND all the songs in Wu Massacre's set. Next years wishlist, BLACKSTAR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First and foremost, I was delighted that all of the artists came and did not back out. I haven't been to a concert in a very long time, but this one definitely topped the charts! I also bought a ticket for my daughter, for her birthday. She told me "mom, that was the best birthday present!" We had a blast!! I hope there will be future concerts and/or annual events. AWESOME!!!!
