James Vincent McMorrow

James Vincent McMorrow

Genre-bending Irish musician James Vincent McMorrow is a master of stirring up emotion, combining haunting vocals and beautifully sparse arrangements to stunning effect on his swelling compositions. While his 2010 debut fit relatively comfortably in the realm of indie folk, 2014's Post Tropical is another story, combining elements of R&B, hip hop, and electronica on subtly layered productions that evade genre categorization. And then there's that voice — a falsetto that's certainly broken a few hearts, as flooring in live concert as it is on record. Already a revered live performer in Europe, Morrow has North American audiences eagerly.

This was James first show in Columbus Ohio and it seems that he may have justly won over a new city with his masterfully constructed songs and his mesmerizing vocals. He brought his whole band with him but played a few tracks solo. A simple light show was well synchronized and provided a wonderful visual aspect. Overall this was the best performance I have ever been to. Cheers to Mcmorrow and his band!

I was wonderfully surprised that JVM sounded so "big" in a large venue. I had heard some radio shows where he scaled down but much prefer his stage presence. His voice is beautiful, but I really love the 4-part harmony he creates with the rest of the band.

Keeps it moving right along, sounds just as good if not better live than studio versions, down to earth. Opener Aidan Knight was good but maybe a little too similar an act to JVM.

A fantastic show. James' voice is even more incredible live than it is on a cd, and the tiny venue created a very intimate space. The only complaint I had was the drunk people at the bar who kept shouting things out in the middle of songs and being a little rude, but that's probably unavoidable. All in all, the man is adorable and an incredible performer.

We thoroughly enjoyed the concert. He and the group were so ON. They were even better in person that we could have imagined. James' voice is superb and the band was so insync. Great vibes! Fun evening!!

If I had a boat I would sail to James Vincent Mcmorrow's every show, but I didn't have a boat. I had a car in which I drove 5 hours to see him and 5 hours back to make it for work and school the next day. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. The show was all I aspired it to be. He delivers that intimate show where you got to see him up close and personal as well as a loud flashy show with lasers and flashing beams. Never once has any man I've met been able to love as much as James loves his music. Genius man with a genius beard.

JVM is a legend in the making. The music blankets his melancholy lyrical genius. It is truly timeless. If you haven't seen him, do it now while he is emerging ... or regret it later.

without a doubt one of the best shows i've seen in years. the album, early in the morning, does him (and the band) no justice. james' voice is reminiscent of - and at its best goes beyond - jeff buckley and ray lamontagne. truly amazing. for anyone into singer/songwriters, james vincent mcmorrow's live shows are a MUST.

I've never posted a review before, but James Vincent McMorrow deserves far more praise than the world has given him thus far. In a word: INCREDIBLE. What an absolutely mind-blowing voice he has. The gig was opened by Lady Lamb the Beekeeper who started her set with a stunningly beautiful acapella song, and swiftly transitioned into intensely guitar-driven songs. Watching her, you wonder who it is she reminds you of, and it's hard to put your finger on it. Her voice has the perfect mixture of purity, grit, and intensity. Despite her young age, she looks as if she's been playing music to crowds all of her life; very self-assured and confident on stage. James Vincent McMorrow took the stage and was immediately met by the squeals of delighted fans. This is especially remarkable considering this was his first ever headline show in the US, and only his third show in New York City (the other two taking place just days before opening for Bell X1 at Bowery Ballroom). The Dublin native delighted the crowd with witty banter between songs, mostly in regards to America's inferno-like summer temperatures. The stage was subtly lit by soft red lights, giving a very intimate feel to the evening. The stand out song for me was "Down The Burning Ropes" (track 8 from his debut album, 'Early In The Morning') His voice is one of the most unique and beautifully pure voices in modern music. I think it's safe to say that all who were in attendance at this one-off headline show will not soon forget it. James Vincent McMorrow has an incredibly bright future ahead of him and I believe one day I will look back on this night and sigh, thinking, "I remember seeing him play before he was famous".

James Vincent McMorrow put on an amazing performance. Aside from his amazing voice, haunting melodic constructions and wonderful guitar work, he displayed sharp wit and humor when talking to the crowd between songs. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to see him in an intimate setting before he gets super big and less accessible.

JVM seemed so proud to be in front of sn electric band. They were too loud. You go to see him to revel in his voice. Not to hear the instruments.

James Vincent McMorrow has two, full albums. The older one leans more rock, folk and soul. (Think Ray LaMontagne). The more recent work is ambient, downtempo and airy (think James Blake). This concert not only had a mix of songs from the bands catalog, they were mixed. By that I mean, the old songs had the new twist and the new ones had the old flavor. And, ALL three backing musicians sang back up vocals, creating an incredible harmony. Just BRILLIANT! Well done.

The venue at the House of Blues is great - no question about that. I enjoy it every time I go there. The James McMorrow concert was not a highlight for me. I did not know the guy in the first place - maybe that was the problem. I recognized two or three of the songs but most of it was too similar for my taste. Also think he is overdoing it when it comes to the high notes - it's interesting a few times but not for 1.5 hours. Some of the pieces were really good, but the sound guy spoilt the experience. The whole concert came over like a big stir fry. So overall I enjoyed some moments of it but it was not convincing.

You know that moment when you feel like you are surrounded by greatness and witnessing a vital moment in an artists career? That's how I felt as I stood in awe before this incredibly talented man as he belted out each and every note. This was hands down one of the best performances I have had the priviledge of experiencing and his voice is utterly unbelievable. Part of me is sad because I would bet that next time he comes to NYC he won't be playing at such an intimate venue as he was this time. If you have the chance to see him live DO IT, you won't regret it!
