Widespread Panic

Widespread Panic

Known for their amazing live shows and the frequency at which they tour, blues-inspired southern rock band Widespread Panic have been creating a dedicated following since forming in the early '80s. Based on the strength of their musicianship, songs like the Billboard charting "Can't Get High" and "Hope in a Hopeless World," and energetic live shows, they've managed to rank among the top 50 grossing touring acts for eight years straight without the aid of substantial radio play, television appearances, or retail store promotion. In December 2003, after playing annually for 18 years (adding up to over 100 dates!) and breaking sell-out records for Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Oak Mountain Amphitheatre, Philips Arena and UNO Lakefront Arena, the band decided to take a well-deserved break. But in 2005, fans nationwide were treated to Widespread Panic's highly anticipated return to the road.

The only band I really wanted to see was the Crows. They did not disappoint. They rocked for almost 2 hours and teased with songs from their upcoming album. I was surprised at what they did not play: Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution or Josephine. It was interesting to hear some of the not as known bands onthe 2 stages during the day. I paid for VIP tickets - wouldn't do that again. Not worth the $.

I thought the Forecastle festival was quit nice. The Gault House was a perfect accomodations to the festival outside the doors. The riverfront location was beautiful with sweet sunsets as Widespraed Panic was tuning up. Widespread tore the plcae down Sunday night playing a 3 hour set with no break, cranking out 24 songs in a row. You can count on seeing me again at the Forecastle Festival, espaecially is WSP will be there (or how about the Dead next summer?).

Best Widespread Panic show I've ever seen! Pretty Lights was AWESOME as usual, but we were kicked off the boat way too early. I know Pretty Lights is always up for an encore but everyone was kicked off exactly at 3.

This was a great weekend trip. If you live within a short drive, as Nashville, then it is a good fit. It was easy to find and there are plenty of hotels near. There was a good number of acts such as Widespread Panic, Black Crowes, Black Keys and Avett Brothers. Also, the sound was great as well. Will definitely check it out again if the acts are solid.

The Panic on the Belvedere was the best show I've attended in over 40 years of concerts. My friends and I have been long time fans of southern rock and jam bands, but only recently started listening to Widespread Panic with Jasckassolantern being our favorite CD. This was our first Panic concert and were blown away. The group has an amazing following and their fans are great. Part of the show was watching the fans sing every word to every song. For 3 hrs I felt 19 again Thanks Widespread Panic.

Well, the contact buzz was nice I guess. Lot's of stoners...I guess I shoulda expected that. Dead head clothing as far as the eye could see. Dead Confederate was kind of weak sound-wise. Seems like their amps weren't set up as well as the others. Blacks crows were cool...pretty much what you'd expect. Enjoyed that. But Widespread Panic just droned on and on till my crew got bored and left. But hey, it looked like there were tons of folks having a great time...it just wasn't for me. All in all, between the ticket price, the expensive beers, food, etc...I'd have to mark it down as overpriced myself.

Loved the focus on sustainable living and all the organic foods available! The music was great, sound was great, Yonder and Widespread were both great. Staff were present, but not overly so and friendly. The venue was clean, restrooms were kept up well. The vendors were a nice mix. Only complaint is the stupid buy tickets to buy food system. Had to wait through two lines to get a bottle of water!!!

Since the day that Jerry Garcia died, the Deadhead nation has been looking for a successor. A number of the Deadheads have become Spreadheads and WSP gave a great performance Saturday night. But the primary reason I traveled from Indy was to see the Black Crowes. Unfortunately, the Crowes only played for 1:15 but they rocked hard and admirably warmed the crowd for Widespread. The Crowes set list was solid, their mix was incredible and they are truly a band in their prime. Chris Robinson is a charismatic front man in all of his hippie glory, their rhythm section just smokes and the guitar work shared by Rich and Luther recalls the Allmans in their prime. Can they get the three hour set next year?

Had never seen UM before. Thought Metallica & Kansas had a baby maybe. I've seen WSP about a dozen times. Not a bad show, but I was expecting something special since they always say: "Never miss a Sunday show." I hope Todd Nance gets back to his drum kit soon. Duane Trucks was alright, but there's nothing like Todd's driving beat. All in all a fairly good show.......but nothing special. I suppose they were gearing up for their Red Rocks run later this week. It had been 7 years since my last Panic show. It maybe 7 more before I see them again.

If I had to choose just 1 word to encompass this group it would be STAMINA ! These guys have it in droves. They never cut a jam short, play every note with feeling and energy, and are still having fun every night; Their not simply "mailing it in"! Ask yourself, "How long has it been since you saw a dual drum solo long enough for the rest of the band to take a break?" Great light show, and the sound was spot on. I will be back, if they choose to play The Lou in the future!

Fantastic show! From beginning to end the boys just continued to bring the house down! After encoring the night before with 'Red Beans', I knew we were in for a treat Saturday night. They continued to break out old school tunes scattered with 4 or 5 from their new album 'Dirty Side Down'. The drums were off the hook - combined with the light show, you could tell Domingo was having a real good time! Have never seen Widespread Panic before but thought the show totally rocked!!! I know that the band is more associated with outdoor sorts of venues (festivals and such) but they really seemed to fit well in the Radio City Music Hall venue (I heard a similar observation from my friends who saw them at the Chicago Theatre). The band was tight and jammed often, the sound system was pretty damn good and the crowd started dancing from the first note and didn't stop until the house lights came up. There s a definite GratefulDead/Phish/Allman Brothers kind of feel to the crowd, but everybody was pretty cool and enjoying the vibe. I love when an audience knows the words to every song. Would definitely go see them again!

this night was the second best out of the three night run at the historic Chicago Theater. The venue needs to rethink the no re-entry policy in this day and age of no smoking indoors. The result is that people just light up their smokes in the theater and ruin the atmosphere for us non-smokers. all that aside, the set list was pretty good and there was some great playing in both of the sets.

Widespread is AMAZING anywhere you go. My friends and I stayed at the Wharf and you should definitely do that if you can because you can walk to the venue. Also, the Wharf is a pretty nice place to stay, but the stores and things need to be open a little later and such, but the condos were perfect. The shop owners don't really know what to make of it all, but you know it brings business to that little place. Great shows, the first night was very humid, but the second night it was very breezy and nice.

GIRL POWER SONGS all night! Greta, Sharon, Arlene, Red Hot Mama, Tie Your Shoes ("Wake up now or someone else just might come and love your girl"). Also, 1st timers are always nice. New Panic is great! When "Cotton was King" was played, I enjoyed that thoroughly. Opening the 2nd set with an instrumental is always nice, or any set for that matter, and this one was "HAPPY". No words needed, just be happy and smile and dance and jam and wait in wonder what in the world they might play next. Also, some of my oldest show buddies (11 yrs and counting- we're only 27-29 and seen over 150 each- not that that really matters, but....) So they just had a baby, Brayden, bright red hair like his dad, came out with a full head of red hair and he's got Cherie's eyes and Brian's "younger hands". So FAMILY POWER too. PAPA's Home, Red Hot MAMA, and Tall BOY! DAS quote: "Who wants it?" while holding up a GODZILLA doll. My other different friend, also named Brian, must've wanted it more than anyone, bc we took some pictures with it after the show in the hotel room. Godzilla was also holding 2 of the "official" band setlists in his claw. "I am happy to be alive, happy the Panic blood flows through my veins." We should all be Glad! Thank you JB, Dave, Todd, Sunny, JoJo, (MIKEY) and Jimmy for another great night of Panic! Keep playing forever, I'll be there until the day I die. That's a promise! Peace and Panic- Rachel PS - HEROES, fav song forever, opened up with it on my first show on my b-day 4-24-99, can't mind that :). Love me some Coconuts too!

Panic New Years Eve Eve (12/30/09) show was awesome! The boys paid tribute to Vic Chesnutt by playing some of his tunes and that was very well recieved by the crowd. The lights were incredible the whole show. Randall Bramblett and the horns always add excitement to a Panic show. John Keane on pedal steel and Mike Mills' (REM) suprise appearance were fantastic. The boys put on an unforgettable show and I am glad I was there.

Traveled to LA from FL for this weekend of Panic shows and it was well worth the trip. The boys sounded great from the center of the Orch floor on Fri night, and from the second row of the Mezz on the balcony on Sat night, and my ears are still ringing from the 3rd row of Orch on Sun night since we were right in front of the big stack of speakers! Loved every minute of it!! The first set on Fri night was sick and just look at the second set to see for yourself: Papa Johnny Road > Rebirtha > Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys > Tie Your Shoes > Drums > Flicker > Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys > Conrad Closing out Sun night with the first encore being Shape I'm In was awesome....crowd was into it all weekend but the place went nuts for a great finish to an amazing weekend!

For anyone who knows the music and performances of Widespread Panic, they realize that these little shows tucked in between the big runs can often be BARN BURNERS... and that is exactly what happened in Reno. From the first lick of B of D to the final notes of Give, the boys were clearly on fire and having a great time. I saw Widespread at this hotel 10 years ago when it was the Hilton and compared the room to the Starship Holodeck and there was limitless dancing area. I was a little skeptical when I saw all the tables and chairs (as Panic is a dancing kind of band), but it ended up being a fantastic venue with plenty of room, easy access to the bar and restrooms and the glorious re-entry. The sound was great, the vibe was rowdy and the traveling circus put their work clothes on and left their mark. Thank you Panic for playing Reno, and thank you Grand SIerra for having us. The after hours show with Izabella was great too!

Great show, Widespread brought their A game and the Allman's were a great show opener. Venue was chill and relaxed in the general admission area and the lines for beverages was short and sweet. Beautiful weather, beautiful night, beautiful music. Couldn't have asked for more.
