Hugh Laurie

Hugh Laurie is nothing if not multitalented. Known for his acting work on the shows Blackadder, Jeeves and Wooster, and House, Hugh Laurie is also a skilled writer, director, comedian,  and musician. Laurie began studying piano at the age of six and later took up a range of instruments, including guitar, piano, drums, saxophone, and harmonica. He has shown off his musical abilities during his acting career, particularly on shows such as A Bit of Fry & Laurie and House, as well as during his hosting stint on Saturday Night Live in 2005.

What a well rounded ensemble. From Bertie/Gregory/Hugh tinkling the irories to a San Diego nature blowing the trombone (and how!), it was a fun, fun time. The whole Copper Bottom Band delivered a performance deserving of platinum or gold, much more so then copper. I might suggest renaming them to the Platinum Top Band, but that would of course cause confusion since they are almost entirely non-blond.

At the conclusion of a jazz-type ensemble's last minute sound check of instruments, Hugh greeted the crowd and immediately had people laughing. On top of his witty charm, he was smooth on vocals, grooving on the piano, and backed by fabulous musician's and female vocals. The stage setting was intimate, and though the theatre was crowded with standing room only, we were immediately inclined to tap our feet and dance right where we stood - it was a truly delightful evening!

Excellent show. Hugh Laurie is a very good entertainer. His voice fits the old blues style and he plays piano very well. The band was very good and they all seemed to mesh. Well worth the price of admission!

We knew Hugh Laurie was an excellent pianist but the band was awesome. Whoever heard of a female trombonist? She was a blast to hear! The vocalists, cello, guitar and reed musicians were outta sight! We especially liked the young vocalist (Gabe?) who has a set of vocals that could raise the roof off the theater. We were shocked to say the least. The concert was a "do not miss" event.

I have been impressed by Hugh Laurie as and actor, and have since come to love him in his musical album debut "Let Them Talk". This tour, which tends to mix some old and a lot of new tunes from the "Didn't it Rain" album was phenomenal. The humor intermixed with absolutely the best individual musicians made for a very entertaining evening. Trombone talent was STRONG! Drums were GREAT! String Base, Guitar and Reeds were Exceptional and the two female back-up vocalists were good enough to be on their own tour. However, there is something about Hugh Laurie that made this group come together as a finely oiled machine with obvious compassion and modisty for one another - a mutual respect that flourished all night long through the 2.5 hour long show!!!!!! I'd go again in a heartbeat!!!

What an excellent musical experience! I loved all aspects of the show. The stage set-up immediately felt warm and inviting. The musicianship was outstanding, the sound system clear and well-mixed, the lighting quite professional and appropriate. Mr. Laurie created a positive atmosphere that brought the audience into the whole experience. I really loved how he brought all the musicians together in a collaborative effort. We, the audience, were the winner in this ensemble approach. And, the song choices were outstanding. Each musician was a master of their instrument(s). It felt good to be invited to participate in the tunes on occasion. The positive energy of each member was electrifying. I felt their love. I was energized.

The music was good, but it wasn't as much fun as I thought it would be. Hugh Laurie overacted a few times and it seemed forced and inappropriate. Maybe stale. The backstory on some of the selections was interesting, though. For me, it was WAY too loud and the acoustic pressure on my ears was painful. I couldn't really hear the words and music very clearly unless I held my fingers in my ears. The musicians were great and the vocals were great, especially when Gaby Moreno was featured. I would recommend this performance for those who love the genre, but I don't think I would go a second time.

From the moment the band came on stage the house was rocking. There are so many talented musicians in that band, they could play without Hugh and draw in the crowds. However, the stories Hugh told and his antics on stage made the whole experience fabulous. Only draw back, there was a constant stream of people walking in and out of the theater. It was annoying; can't anyone sit still any more? Also, no video and cameras yet many people held up phones causing the ushers to again go down the aisle...ridiculous.

Hugh Laurie and the Copper Bottom Band are an amazing collection of musicians. The evening was filled with vocals and musicianship beyond compare. Mr. Laurie regaled the audience with tales of each song's genesis as well as his own feelings about the tune. His piano playing was extraordinary, showcased on St. James Infirmary. And his occasional dancing was a feast for the eyes. The Copper Bottom Band are three women & four men singing and playing like no one I have ever seen. Jazz & the Blues plus a bit of good old rock n' roll. I would see them again in a heartbeat.

Hugh Laurie and the CBB played in this small venue in Napa. It was a fantastic evening. The venue is small enough to feel intimate. The band was superb. Unbelievable musicians include Vincent Henry, Elizabeth Lea, David Piltch, Herman Matthews and Mark Goldenberg. The singers were Gaby Moreno and Sister Jean. I loved every minute of the show. Hugh Laurie is funny and the man can play. He's generous with his band of extremely talented singers and musicians. They all get multiple chances to shine. There isn't a weak link anywhere. They played for 1 1/2 hours, with no break for Laurie (the band got a break mid-way but he stayed on stage). They did 3 encores. The music is fun and audience participation is allowed (even encouraged at times).. It is a great evening's entertainment.

At 72 years old, I've been to hundreds of concerts in my life. This one, Hugh Laurie, stands out as probably one of the best ever. I know that he loves to tour, but if he ever signed on to a Las Vegas venue, it would be Standing Room Only EVERY night! And I would be driving 250 miles every couple of months to enjoy his music and Band again. The Copper Bottom Band is indeed one of the best. I've been to New Orleans, Chicago, NYC, Branson, Austin, Nashville, etc...and this Band/Singers is probably one of the best of them all. I would recommend the experience of being immersed in this musical phenomenon to ANYONE.

It was so much fun to see Hugh Laurie & the Copper Bottom Band live! Hugh has that great British sense of humor that I found hilarous as he talked in between songs and it went well with the show overall. From start to finish, Hugh was witty and talented, playing a mix of old (some seldom heard) standards and newer pieces. The band was tight, as were the harmonies, and the venue and set complemented their performance. My wife doesn't even care much for jazz and she LOVED this performance!!

I was somewhat skeptical about the quality of this event, but my daughter is a huge fan and the evening was a gift to her. I have to say I was quite pleasantly surprised. The music is a collection of classic jazz, most of it from the very early days from artists who have long since passed on. Laurie's main talent is the piano, which he plays quite well. While his voice is acceptable, his addition of African-American soul singer Jean McClain and the sweet and sultry voice of the Guatemalan beauty Gaby Moreno is what makes this performance an evening to remember. Moreno has a voice that reminds me of the UK artist Katie Melua as well as the late Eva Cassidy. Perfect for jazz and blues.

I know that Hugh Laurie has great stage presence, and I know he has a great love for old-school blues and jazz, and I liked both of his albums a lot, but that still didn't prepare me for how entertaining the concert was! Hugh and his excellent band had incredible energy and musical talent to spare. Don't let his grouchy 'House' persona scare you away - he was funny, humble, engaging, enthusiastic about music he clearly loves, and was bouncing all over the stage like a kid on a sugar high! If you get a chance to see him, DO IT!

Absolutely LOVED EVERY MOMENT :) This was our 36th anniversary evening celebration and we had wonderful seats in the balcony. I have loved Hugh Laurie since House began and even before on his children DVDs Stuart Little, etc. I did not get a chance to purchase a t-shirt or cup that evening and wish I had. I am scheduled for knee replacement surgery next week and if there is a website where I can purchase some of these items, please let me know. Thank you for scheduling this event. We sang and clapped with all the people seated in our area. The only thing I could have wished for was an autographed photo and a chance to meet him...in my dreams :) I even had my cane with me as I needed it to help me walk.

Hugh Laurie was downright joyous as he and the Copper Bottom Band played many old songs - blues, jazz and even a tango. The musicians were multi-talented and very gifted. It reminded me of being in a club in New Orleans listening to wonderful music. The two female singers were nuanced and shone brightly. Hugh Laurie's origins as a comedian are undoubtedly a great part of the show... I really enjoyed his performance in singing and playing piano and guitar. His voice is deep and suits blues in a great way, but his sense of humor and connection with the audience is even better. You will laugh out loud the whole show!! In addition, The Copper Bottom Band displays fine music knowledge and high performance. The highest note is Gaby Moreno's voice. We were anxious to hear Gaby Moreno in person and she did not disappoint. What a talent and what a voice. In fact, the three women rocked, Gaby, Sister and Elizabeth the fantastic trombonist. Hugh Laurie has gathered great talent and his arrangements are wonderful. He and the Copper Bottom Band obviously enjoyed what they were doing and put on a long enthusiastic and satisfying performance.

Beautiful music. The best. This was my first time at his live performance.Hard to sit still-felt like wanting to dance during the length of performance. Intimate feeling in theater-not to big. Mr Laurie is a complete professional and shows a kindly nature. His work is pure and amazing. Back up singers had incredible voices and their solos were excellent. Mr Laurie shared the stage with the whole team. I would highly recommend his show and would attend again.

Hugh Laurie and the Copper Bottom band were terrific. Everything I was expecting and more. The sound system or the sound person were not. It wasn't modulated for their music_so loud that we had a hard time hearing the lyrics. Then there was the audience (obviously big fans ) who behaved like yahoos. One demanding to know why they were not doing "Bottle Rock". Bottle Who? Another kept yelping throughout the show. Obviously the historic content and the sophistication of this presentation was lost on them.

If you're like me, you'll go to see Hugh Laurie, and you'll leave raving about the band. What a great, fun show! I'm not much of a blues/jazz fan and I was familiar with maybe three of the numbers that were played, but man I loved it. Hugh, as you would expect, is a genial and entertaining host in addition to his musical contributions, and the band is spectacular. It almost feels unfair to single out any of them, but Gaby Moreno and Sister Jean McClain are fabulous vocalists, and I've loved guitarist Mark Goldenberg going back to his days with the Cretones. If you have any interest in either Hugh or this style of music, you really should see the show. A very generous 2-1/2 hours with no intermission.

Wow ! What a different character Hugh Laurie was from his years as House. A very talented entertainer who has fun and connects with his audience. He performs well with the talented and versatile group of musicians in The Copper Bottom Band. They really got the crowd moving. Highly recommend this show.

I knew Hugh Laurie was a fine actor and comedian and he could play several instruments. I didn't know that he was so musically talented that he puts most others to shame. I also didn't know that he sang and sings well. Accompanied and backed by the Copper Bottom Band, who are all magnificently talented in their own right, it just doesn't get any better than this. I have never enjoyed 2-1/2 hours so much, clapped so hard, laughed out loud as much or been in such a beautiful audience before. The only other audience that was as great was the opening night audience in 1975 of "A Chorus Line".

This concert started right off as one of my top concerts of all time. I have been to dozens of concerts and this one by far blew all others out of the water. The live singing was incredible, all singers blew me away, they sounded better than their album, which hardly ever is the case nowadays. Awesome energy, fantastic groove and mood.

Most times you might say of an actor/musician that he is a good musician for an actor. I have to say that Hugh Laurie is a good actor for a musician! he played many of the old songs that today's music was built on and brought many little known works to a broader audience. The band was absolutely spot on and the singers were really voices that complemented the songs being played. Hugh was by turns funny, self-deprecating and serious about his love of the musci

Hugh Laurie was enchanting, as expected. The Copper Bottom Band was a pleasant surprise. They had everyone up and dancing by the end of the night and there was never a dull moment. Will definitely attend next time they're in town.

Hugh Laurie is an affront to every normal person. Nobody should be a successful screen icon, a talented musician and an engaging performer. On top of that, he is bloody hilarious.

Back up singers great. Mr Laurie did not know how to interact with the front row, who stood in line. For 3 hours prior to the show. No audience interaction at all. Boring.

We got there 20 minutes before the show was (supposed) to start. The theater looked like it was at 130% capacity, (general admission) with people stepping all over each other. The sound was so bad it sounded like transistor radio being played thru a wet sock. I was hoping for some blues, and maybe some delightful and funny repartee about Frye and Laurie, or House, but the sound and crowd were absolutely awful. Funny thing - we'd seen Justin Hayward and his mostly acoustic band at the same venue - Buckhead Theater - and the sound was crisp and beautiful, and we could hear Justin Heyward's commentary clearly. What a disaster - we left after 4 (not sure, the sound was that bad) songs. Who's to blame - HL for agreeing to gen admission, not having someone who knows what a "soundcheck" is, or the theater for not having crowd control? A fiasco, and $80 down the drain.

The band was tight and amazing. Hugh did a very good job as front man. Gaby Moreno has a world class voice, her harmonies with Sister Jean were just unreal. SUCH a good show, you will not be sorry if you are a fan of blues.

We were so impressed with not only Hugh Laurie, but also The Copper Bottom Band.. Each one is so talented! The music is nonstop and Mr. Laurie is funny, witty, endearing; everything you would want. He has so much energy and performed continually. He seems to really appreciate the band and should, because they are a huge part of the performance. The Fox Theater is beautiful and has a cozy feeling. We were disappointed in the local food options. The Mission end is nice but crowded and pricey.

Hugh Laurie and his Copper Bottom band (what a talented and energetic band!) were simply amazing! One of the best shows I've seen in a very long time. Who knew he was so gifted, don't know why he spent so many years acting, though he is a great actor. The brass players (Elizabeth--her energy!) were a real treat, but my goodness the voice on singer Gaby Moreno... What a fabulous voice and what a great ensemble they all make. Thanks for a fantastic time! Can't wait to catch them at next show.
