The best summary was my daughter who said she could have left during the second act. They seemed to forget about the plot in the story. They did a poor job of developing the characters. The performance was all about the dancing. If you are a big fan of dancing, you will love the show. It was just too much for us. I would not recommend this show. It is a great story, they just seemed to "dance around it all night".

An American in Paris is a wonderful production. I saw the original Broadway cast, and this cast was as good or even better in some roles. The dancing was spectacular and the staging is minimalist but effective. If you love ballet and lyrical dance, or if you love Gershwin, I expect you will love this show. Fantastic orchestra as well.

I've done backstage work and was the props manager for several Community Theater musicals. The whole experience of "An American in Paris" was astounding-the orchestra and sound, the actors in character, the dancing and costumes, the sets and the lighting. I was dazzled by the scene of "Stairway to Paradise." Thank you for giving me the opportunity to review this marvelous show.

Any show which features music by Gershwin attracts me. A few years ago I saw "Crazy for You", a vehicle for the music. It was excellent musically, although the book/story has little to praise. "An American in Paris" presents a completely different approach, Knowing little about it, except for its reputation, I expected a reworking of the film and was overwhelmed by the beauty of its presentation as a ballet! The cast of the production in Chicago held us entranced. The dancing of the leads could not be better, even though the male lead (an understudy) had a voice which was not as polished as that of the other principles. The dance scenes blended with the sets---a combination of projections and "hard" props---seamlessly. I was a bit disappointed that "Our Love Is Here to Stay" was not included, a small matter which did not distract from the quality of this brilliant show.

There have only been a few shows where the music, dance and story come together as well as in this show. West Side Story and Chorus Line are the two that most immediately come to mind, but the dancing in this show excelled even the best of the multiple productions I have seen of those two classics.. Solid cast, immensely likeable leads. The dance talent assembled for this particular production was amazing. For those who are fans of the movie, I llike the changes/additions to the story even better for this live production.

Had not totally expected the dancing. Took my girlfriend and her grandson. She had lived in Paris. He is 16 and thought he would be bored but he said he just loved it, one of his favorite things while visiting from Virginia. I am 73 and have learned to enjoy all the variety of entertainment but was set aback by the superb dance routeens.

The main male character appeared to be dancing with and for himself the entire performance even when he had a dance partner. The singing by both male and female leads was not the quality I expect from a production at this theater Their voices were weak. The choreography was redundant in its moves throughout.

We had never before seen this staged and had only the movie to compare, but this production is amazing. The dancing is superb: Gene Kelly would approve. The set and staging is what impressed me the most, and that's something I'm not usually aware of. The swirling screens and props glided across the stage and segued into the next scene with no seams. All this and Gershwin, played by a small orchestra up to the task of the music composed by arguably the best American composer in history.

I was rather disappointed in "An American in Paris" since I expected it to follow the story line of the movie, which it mostly did not. Another surprise was that the music was not all Gershwin. How can you improve on Gershwin? The actor who played Jerry was upstaged by the actor playing Henri since the latter's voice was much better and stronger. All in all, not the performance I was anticipating for my $160.

My husband and I just loved this production. We were not big fans of the movie and so did not know what to expect but this was so much better than the movie. In particular, the dancing was superb and simply mesmerizing. The ballerina was outstanding, so beautiful and graceful, and the ensemble dancers had so much variety and were such fun to watch. Kudos to the choreographer. Also, the scenery added so much to this production. The actual movie seemed way too long but this play was so great that you did not want it to end.

Was so looking forward to seeing one of my all time favorite musicals! What could be better than an evening of Gershwin and romance. The sets were interesting , the orchestra was terrific, the music sublime - but- the male and female leads had absolutely no chemistry. It was actually uncomfortable to watch. She looked like she was 12 years old and he looked very silly trying to fake attraction to a woman. I expected him to run off with one of the other male characters at the end. It was actually uncomfortable to watch. I've seen about 8 plays in New York and Chicago this year . This was by far the worst. Save your money.

I attended 2:00 PM Sat. and couldn't recommend it more. I came in hopes of seeing an outstanding musical. And it was. I would not have come to a show to see ballet; it was completely unexpected and, even more surprisingly, an amazing experience that left me awe-inspired and astounded with a new appreciation and respect for the unbelievable skill and talent involved. The male stars that played Jerri and Henri, (McGee Maddox & Nick Spangler) came through with their incredible singing voices and, though, I ignorantly thought male ballet was nothing more than support casting for the ballerina (wrong wrong wrong!), I was impressed by how affecting, strong, masculine, complex and mind-blowing male ballet could be. In my mind, much more difficult to pull off than the best-of-the-best tap dancing. Likewise, watching Sara Etsy dance was as calming and as fluid as observing the gentle rise and fall of waves breaking on the shores of lake Michigan. Yes. Beautiful. Mesmerizing. The cast deserves much more recognition than I can provide. Great singing and acting. The audience gave them a well deserved standing ovation. I highly recommend this show over any other you might even consider seeing in Chicago! Again, outstanding! (Why is the play only in Chicago for 3-weeks?)

I, age 80, love George Gershwin's music. My daughter and three grands, ages 10, 11 and 12 were enthralled with the dancing. It's not the film and it's not Gene Kelly, but it's pretty good. With music by Gershwin, how can it miss? I would have preferred to have seen the primary male lead, but we had the actor/dancer who performs the matinees. An excellent dancer, but somewhat bland. The lead actress was charming and a lovely dancer; I also liked the actor who played Henri. The highlight should be the "An American in Paris" ballet, but I was put off by the geometric designs of the costumes. I know it's impossible to recreate the film's ballet, but the costuming left me cold. What I especially liked was Henri's "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise" number - Art Deco set, gents in white tie, tails, and top hats, and showgirls in plumes and glittery costumes. Wow! In short, the play was a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.
