Drive-By Truckers

Drive-By Truckers

Southern rockers Drive-By Truckers have a penchant for tradition, recording their studio albums in analog and insisting on releasing their records on vinyl. The band's traditional approach extends to their beloved live concerts, where craft and musicianship take center stage and marathon sets are the norm. The Truckers may orbit just under the mainstream's radar, but their devoted followers wouldn't have it any other way — as one of the best-kept secrets in music, the band has fans eagerly awaiting their intimate 2014 tour dates in support of English Oceans, their tenth studio album. BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:Formed in.

Patterson Hood was fighting the flu, but that didn't stop him and the DBT from playing for almost 2 hours and 15 minutes. "American Band" songs were prominent, but so were many fan favorites from past records.

This was my fourth truckers show, and it was once again, fantastic. Tift Merritt was a great opening act, and the Truckers definitely brought the rock. They always play well in Richmond.

DBT rocked, as usual, and I was not disappointed. Got there early enough to get my standard standing place right in front and from their opening number to their 6 song encore, they jammed. This is the 6th time I have seen DBT, with 3 of those six being at the National, what a venue, you can't beat it. Would love to see DBT at National or Norva with Sons of Bill as the opening act.

Great Rock Show....Not that I've ever been disappointed by a Truckers event but it was great to hear the cover of Warren Zevon's Play it All Night Long, a rockin' round of Lookout Mountain, and a personal favorite, Heathens. The closing tune (Angels and Fuselage) with each member leaving their sound on stage as they exited was so, so, so good. Great tribute to several great musicians and friends that have passed away recently.

Another great ROCK show by the Truckers. After playing some of their best songs early the band dipped into some rarities, that are comming out in Sept. that went over pretty well with the sold out Jackson crowd. All I can say is the band was as hot this night as the venue! Well worth the 3 1/2 hr. drive from TN.

Drive-by Truckers were great. I loved them! The sound was much better toward the center of the stage, to the left was the preferred seating area where I will not sit again, I was asked to be less loud by the concert police. I thought I was at a concert??? I moved into the general admission area and had a great time!

The only thing better than seeing this band for the first time was seeing them in such an intimate venue. They were such gentlemen, playing an hour and 45 minutes of good music on top of the opening act. With their new album coming soon, I hope to see them here again.

The sound quality was lousy during the opening act and I was hoping it would be fixed by the time DBT started playing. It wasn't and I couldn't enjoy the show because of it. I even considered leaving after an hour but stuck it out. I know all the lyrics and still couldn't understand most of what they were saying/singing. Extremely disappointed. Setlist was also sub-standard, whole middle of the show the audience was just sitting there and wondering why the hell they were playing the songs they were.

There's a reason why these guys are known for their live shows. The only negative was the absence of "Ronny and Neil" and, more shockingly, "Zip City" from the setlist. DBT not playing "Zip City" is like Springsteen not playing "Born to Run." Only other issue was it took the guy on the soundboard about half the show before he finally got Mike Cooley's mic mixed loud enough so that you could hear him.

I am not a fan of the Truckers, but don't hate them either. I went to this event with a friend. I found the venue to be not overly crowded and the temperature was kept down low even though it was a sweltering night outside. I always hate when you are sandwiched in front to back and the place is a sweat shop. The Norva was not that at all on this particular night. The sound was abysmal. The crash cymbals and the rhythm guitar were too high. The vocals were too low and everything was getting lost in the middle. The end result was what felt like a wave of sound coming at you at all times. There were no highs and lows, nor was there anything distinct, just noise. Everyone that we went with, about 5 of us, said the same thing. The sound was way off. It's a shame.

This was my first DBT concert, I met a couple for whom this one made 42 total! And I can sure understand why! The band was just awesome, they are truly rockers. I will definitely watch for their next show somewhere nearby, and would highly recommend becoming familiar with the songs beforehand, because the lyrics are so good it really adds to the experience to know the words to the songs. Every band member put a ton of energy into the show, must give extra credit to the awesome drummer! My advice: buy some DBT CDs, get to know them if you don't already, and look for the next concert, you won't be disappointed!

I've only seen the truckers one other time and it was electric in more than one use of the word. I wanted more of that, so I was a little disappointed when I found out the tickets I had bought was to be for an acoustic show. Man was I ever wrong! This two set show was absolutely amazing!, Even better then the electric show I had seen. All of these musicians are so talented and played so tightly together. The sound was so clean. It sounded like a studio recording session. And these guys have such amazing voices and such killer songwriting. I also like how they told stories in between songs about how the songs came to be, it added a personal touch. The show would make for a great unplugged video. f you ever get a chance to see them acoustic don't miss the opportunity! This was a seatedevent, so I was worried that the boys didn't feel like they were getting their respect they were due. But at the end of the show everyone went nuts!

If you like to know the exceedingly boring details of how a song came about then this group is for you. I guess they don't get it that "you had to be there". The original songs were hard to differentiate from each other (except for the lead-in story). The only song that the crowd seemed to "get into" was elton's Benny and the Jet.......otherwise, very quiet. The theater was surprisingly empty at show time and the 30 minute delay to the start was evidently in hope of more walk ups. The fundamental music concept is questionable.....mixing was off as a piercing organ drowned out everything else, guitar leads were lost in the noise, the bass went in and out. Both vocalists had interesting voices, too bad they are wasted on poor song writing.

They played really well and the crowd was both enthusiastic and full of energy, but I only recognized a couple of songs. I have 5 of the their albums. Nothing from The Big To Do, really? Maybe that is why the small theatre was only 1/2 full. The crowd was into it though. I guess I am just a casual fan of theirs.

Any performance at the State Theater is a good time. DBT is a gang of very talented musicians, and possibly some of the most prolific songwriters of this era. A blend that is sure to please. I don't know anything about Eric Church, but his crowds are experiencing DBT as the opening act as they ramble about performing solo shows in between their arena appearances. DBT is known to glorify (rightfully so) some of their southern rock heros, tonight they came on stage and mentioned all of our Michigan rock icons, tearing into a spectacular and well received version of Alice Cooper's "18" to start the show. Fresh and fun. Good time.

It was as good as a rock show gets. Each night it gained a little more momentum until they finally had to leave the stage at 1:55 Sunday morning because of the 2 am curfew. They'd have kept playing if they'd been allowed. That's the attitude of this band and that is why they are the best live show today (and have been for about the last 12 years).

A great band and a fun crowd. Our original seats were not the greatest and I moved up to the front where there was a whole section of empty seats until a very bitter and angry older woman (usher) gave me the boot. We then moved behind our assigned seats to another emptyish section. While dancing and enjoying the show from there, a gentleman and his wife came up to us and gave us tickets to seats up in the section (one row closer) that I had just been sitting in. The fans around us were awesome and a great time was had by all!!!

I love this band and have seen them before, but this concert was very disappointing. First of all the sound was terrible and for that I blame the venue (Electric Factory). It echoed all over the place where it was impossible at times to tell which song they were playing. I guess it got to them because the energy of past shows just wasn't there. They ended the show with Grand Canyon off the new album. It's a great song, but very mellow. Not what you'd expect a Rock and Roll band to finish with. Bummer

Going to a DBT concert is like going to an old-fashioned tent revival. It's loud, it's raucous and the DBT fans are fun to be around. Patterson draws the crowd in from the very beginning and never loses them. PH, Cooley and the rest of the DBT are great entertainers, but most of all they are great songwriters and musicians.

Dynamic as expected, rocking as expected. DBT was exactly as advertised. Pulling from a southern rock tradition that like the Allmans ventures away from Boogie British Blues based rock and just having a good time, they separate themselves from Southern Rock cliches by being more political and relying more heavily on the traditions of Southern Soul. This puts them in league with the Allman Bros. Band ( who drew on BeBop as an ancillary) and The Marshall Tucker Band ( which drew heavily on country swing, jazz and country.) They were tight and had a couple of extremely minor fluffs but it was hard to tell thanks to the venue. The Newport is a fun place to go but it has it's drawbacks which are basically architectural and these flaws can lead to a muddy sounding mix especially on the louder cuts.

I guess this was in support of the new album, The Big To-Do, although the DBT played all many old favorites as well. These included 72 (This Highway's Mean), Women Without Whiskey, Marry Me, Hell No I Ain't Happy. They closed with Shut Up And Get On The Plane, which just about blew the roof off the NorVa. Speaking of the closing, the encore lasted nearly as long as the main show! I think the band stood up there for maybe 7 or 8 songs, and Patterson Hood seemed like possessed. Highlights included all the great old songs mentioned above, but every song they played off the new one as well. I've had the CD for more than two weeks now - it's a great, great, great CD imo - but even so I was surprised how songs like The Fourth Night Of My Drinking and Drag The Lake Charlie were just brought to life last night. Great songs. DBT also ripped through This Fucking Job, which I knew was going to be fun and they surely did not disappoint. Mike Cooley's Get Downtown just absolutely rocked, what a great song. The only hint of downside to this show was this. Another great song on this CD is (It's Gonna Be) I Told You So, which I felt was rushed. That's a beautiful song and, imo, stands on its own two feet just fine if played straight up.

The band calls it the "rock show," and once again Drive-By Truckers left fans feeling as though they had just spent two hours themselves putting on a full-blown, high-energy rock concert. With most attendees singing along to every song, Saturday's show at The National in Richmond delivered all it had promised. Coming off back-to-back gigs in South Carolina and Georgia, Patterson Hood, Mike Cooley and gang showed no signs of being tired or worn-down. They hit the stage with a fury, after a much-inspired set by opening act Tift Merritt. Taking turns as usual, Hood and Cooley ripped through a setlist that included much of their recent album Brighter Than Creation's Dark, plus fan favorites from their extensive catalog. Merritt, showing an unexpected harder edge to her country-flavored setlist, joined the Truckers for a song midway throught the evening. Known for delivering one of the most exciting shows in rock and roll today, once again the Truckers left it all onstage.

Iv'e been seeing live DBT shows since 2008 including everytime they play the Showbox, Ft. Lauderdale, Tipitinas in NOLA, Denver, and now at the Moore, at least 12 times. Only one show at the SODO Showbox location was lacking in 2013. Hey, every band is entitled to a slow night! I love their stripped down, hard rockin Southern perspective and great story telling. These guys sing from their hearts and I agree with their political/social views. So cool that Patterson has relocated to the great NW in Portland. All of these guys are crack musicians and you know they are having fun on stage, especially the bass player with his incredible grin/smile throughout the show. Go see them!! As always The Truckers played like they meant it. This is ,after all, one of the most talented bands now touring. This made it even more unfortunate that the sound was murky, lacking clarity, and difficult to hear the lyrics of these fine songs. Also repeated strobe lights flashing directly at the audience was unnecessary and annoying. With music this good, the cheap theatrics were surprising to us.

Typical DBT show. They were fantastic. The sound on the other hand was lousy. dB's over fidelity. Vocals were buried and guitars levels were all over the place. Drums sounded great, but the bass was all mush. Checked out the FOH mixer occasionally, dude was sitting on his butt the whole night. Lazy sound guys make me crazy.

DBT were great, but I would recommend seeing them somewhere other than Newport Music Hall. The sound levels seemed off: too much bass, hard to hear vocals, but not unbearable. The musicians' performance made up for this, though.

I do have some love for this band. I am a little disappointed with them since Jason Isbell left, partly because they no longer play the songs he wrote. I've seen them several times with mixed reviews. Many of their indoor shows are poorly mixed. I am not happy with the sound at many of their indoor shows. The crowd was extremely drunken middle-aged men with flasks and no consideration for the other concertgoers. Security was lean. Setlist was soft. I left after 10 songs feeling let down.

Way too crowded in the house to truly enjoy these great bands.

I have been to dozens of Old 97's shows and they have never ceased to disappoint me. I am used to them playing 2+ hours so I was a bit disappointed that they were co-headliners and only had 75 minutes to play... I had never heard of Drive-By-Truckers before this event. I enjoyed them!

Another great night from 1 of America's finest and under appreciated bands. Go see them if you can.

The Old 97's were terrific. They played a wide variety of songs from all of their albums and they sounded great. The Drive By Truckers, however, left a little to be desired. At least two of them appeared drunk, so much so that I am amazed that they could play as well as they did. The Pageant is a great location.

This double bill lived up to expectations and then some. Old 97s opened with a 90 minute set of their best known songs and they rocked the house all the way. DBT played two hours and the crowd was mon their side from the start. Both bands seemed thrilled to be at the Pageant and delivered the goods. Pageant mstaff was great as usual and the sound was excellent even from the side of the stage. A great evening!

Music was too loud for the building. Great performances but dial it back a notch so you can understand it.

I purchased the ticket to see the opening act by Old 97's mainly. They were absolutely amazing. Although not too familiar with the Drive By Truckers music, I was happily surprised of the great sound they had as well. The State Theatre is such a perfect venue. I love going there every time and am looking forward to more great bands playing there.

The Drive By Truckers are a great band. I love their music and the concert was good. The issue is that the Paradise is too small for amplified music. I know it's a local institution and has character but the space is more suitable to jazz, folk and acoustic music. There's no clarity to the sound. Guitar solos don't stand out and you can't make out the lyrics. I could not hear the keyboards at all. The House of Blues is a much better venue. I know it's a corporate chain and tickets are expensive but it's worth it.

This was my first concert since John Neff left , and I was wondering how that would affect the band. They are better than ever. Jay Gonzales is an awesome guitar player, and a lot of the solos Neff played are being played by Cooley and Hood, which is great in my book. Also, it seemed to me the jammed more than they have recently, which is also great for me. The Boston show was awesome start to finish. It confirmed to me that you cannot see this band often enough. They are the best rock and roll band out there. Go see them!

the show was a lot of fun - as far as i can tell, among fans that knew all the words and those that were getting their first introduction

The opening act in Portland were the Old 97's - who did about 45 minutes of tunes from the last 20 years and absolutely killed it - best music I've seen live in several years. When the lead singer first hit the stage he looked around at all the props set up for DBT - mostly stylized red-eyed pterodactyls and joked - "I feel like I just stepped on the stage of Spinal Tap," he laughed. The Old 97's played an excellent set. The DBT's were just as cliche as their set though and set their volume on "11" midway through their first song. And while at least half the audience stuck it through to the end, we felt more like survivors than the fortunate few. If you're white, middle aged and like 80's country metal sound, you might like this band. I am, but I didn't. I would have paid four times the ticket price if someone had lowered a little Stonehenge or toy pterodactyl on a string through the fake fog during the last set (a la Spinal tap).

The Old 97's set was good, awesome really, however the sound guy was asleep I think. Way too booming muddy mix in the house. It was tolerable though, until the Drive By Truckers came on. Then the sound guy snorted some blow and put on ear muffs, cause it was painfully loud, and you couldn't hear the vocals at ALL. The only drum audible was the bass drum which probably rattled some fillings loose... the lead guitar was WAY up in the mix and everything else was lost. It was the famous "screaming guitar, bass drum, and muddled noise" mix. BOO

Old 97's and Drive-By Truckers came to frozen South Canada (Portland, Maine) on Saturday, March 9th at the gloriously unrefurbished State Theater. Both bands were terrific, offering up a selection of their "non-hit" crowd favorites. The Old 97's are a lot different than their CDs, which are more country and pop-oriented; watching the 97's at times I got a cowpunk vibe -- loud and fast. The Truckers were more nuanced; Patterson Hood's vocals were clean and crisp, and the songs they offered were -- well, I hate to use the word "erudite," but their songs made you think a lot more than the 97's did. I'd go see both bands in a heartbeat.

I thought Old 97s would be at the top of the ticket. Their act was great - did hits with real enthusiasm and stage presence. I hadn't heard much about DBT's. They were loud southern alt rock - good but kind of homogeneous, and I could not understand lyrics at all.

It was my third time seeing DBT and this was by far my least enjoyable show. I am not sure if it was the theater, because the opening act also had this issue, but I couldn't hear the vocals over the instruments. I was disappointed with the songs they chose, they were all very similar and a bit too mellow for my taste. I actually nodded off during the show. That didn't happen at the 2 previous events.

This is my second experience seeing a lively country rock show at the State Threater in Portland, Maine. I love the space and set up but even with acoustic ear-plugs the sound quality is distorted. Sound Is slightly better in the balcony than on the floor/ground level seating, but not much. If sound quality is not an issue for you then it's a great place to get up close to your favorites bands. As for me I will not return for this type of show at the state.

Both bands killed it, and are the kinds of bands meant to play live. The State Theater is one of the coolest venues in the country. Great view of the stage in every part of the room and the sound is big and clean. My favorite venue anywhere.
